હિન્દૂ ધર્મમાં માન્યતા છે કે શરીર નાશ પામ્યા પછી પણ આત્મા અજર-અમર રહે છે. તે પોતાના કાર્યોના ભોગ ભોગવવા માટે નાની યોનિયોમાં વિચરણ કરે /> સામાન્ય રીતે જીવનમાં પાપ અને પુણ્ય બંને હોય છે. હિન્દૂ માન્યતા મુજબ પુણ્યનુ ફળ સ્વર્ગ અને પાપનુ ફળ નર્ક હોય છે. નર્કમાં જીવાત્માને ખૂબ યાતનાઓ ભોગવવી પડે છે. પુણ્યાત્મા મનુષ્ય યોનિ અને દેવયોનિને પ્રાપ્ત કરે છે. આ યોનિયો વચ્ચે એક યોનિ હોય છે એ છે પ્રેત યોનિઅ. વાયુ રૂપમાં તે જીવાત્મા મનુષ્યનુ મન શરીર છે. જે પોતાના મોહ કે દ્રેષને કારણે આ પૃથ્વી પર રહે છે. પિતૃ યોનિ પ્રેત યોનિથી ઉપર છે અને પિતૃલોકમાં રહે છે.

ભાદ્રપદની પૂર્ણિમાથી અશ્વિન કૃષ્ણ અમાસ સુધી સોળ દિવસ સુધીનો સમય સોળ શ્રાદ્ધ કે શ્રાદ્ધ પક્ષ કહેવાય છે. શાસ્ત્રોમાં દેવકાર્યોથી પૂર્વ પિતૃ કાર્ય કરવાની સલાહ આપવામાં આવી છે. શ્રાદ્ધમાં ફક્ત પિતૃ જ નહી પરંતુ સમસ્ત દેવોથી લઈને વનસ્પતિઓ પણ તૃપ્ત થાય છે. શ્રાદ્ધ કરનારનુ સાંસારિક જીવન સુખમય બને છે અને મોક્ષની પ્રાપ્તિ થાય છે. એવી માન્યતા છે કે શ્રાદ્ધ ન કરવાથી પિતૃક્ષુધાથી ત્રસ્ત થઈને પોતાના સગા સંબંધિઓને કષ્ટ અને શાપ આપે છે. પોતાના કર્મો મુજબ જીવ જુદી જુદી યોનિયોમાં ભોગ ભોગવે છે. જ્યા મંત્રો દ્વારા સંકલ્પિત હવ્ય-કવ્યને પિતર પ્રાપ્ત કરી લે છે.
