એક ગરીબ બ્રાહ્મણ પરિવાર હતું. એ પરિવારમાં પતિ-પત્નીના સિવાય એક પુત્રી પણ હતી.એ પુત્રી ધીમે-ધીમે મોટી થવા લાગી. એ પુત્રીમાં સમય અને વધતી ઉમ્ર સાથે બધા સ્ત્રીઓના ગુણોના વિકાસ થઈ રહ્યું હતું. એ છોકરી સુંદર સંસ્કારવાન અને ગુણવાન હતી. પણ ગરીબ હોવાના કારણે એમનું લગ્ન નહી થઈ રહ્યું હતું. એક દિવસ બ્રાહ્મણના ઘરે કે સાધુ મહારાજ આવ્યા. તે એ કન્યાના સેવાભાવથી ખૂબ પ્રભાવિત થયા. કન્યાને લાંબી ઉમ્રના આશીર્વાદ આપતા સાધું એ કહ્યું કે આ કન્યાના હથેલીમાં લગ્ન માટે કોઈ રેખા નથી .
ત્યારે એ દંપતીએ સાધું થી ઉપાય પૂછ્યું , કે કન્યા એવુ શું કરે કે એમના હાથમાં લગ્ન યોગ બની જાય.સાધુ થોડી વાર વિચાર કર્યા પછી અંતદ્ર્ષ્ટિથી ધ્યાન કરીને જણાવ્યા કે થોડી દૂર એક ગામમાં એક સોના નામની ધોબણ જાતિની એક મહિલા એમના દીકરા અને વહુ સાથે રહે છે , જે ખૂબ જ આચાર-વિચાર અને સંસ્કાર સંપન્ન અને પતિવ્રતા છે.

જો એ કન્યા એમની સેવા કરે અને એ મહીલ એમને એમના માથાના સિંદૂર લગાવી દે , એ પછી એ કન્યાના લગ્ન થાય તો એ કન્યાના વૈધ્વ્ય યોગ મટી શકે છે. સાધુએ પણ જણાવ્યું કે મહિલા ક્યાં પણ આવતી-જતી નથી.
આ વાત સાંભળી બ્રાહ્મણએ એમની દીકરીથી ધોબણની સેવા કરવાની વાત કહી. બીજા દિવસે કન્યા સવારે ઉઠીને સોના ધોબણના ઘરે જઈને ,સાફ - સફાઈ અને બીજા બધા કામ કરીને ઘરે આઈ જતી. એક દિવસ સોના ધોબણ એમની વહુ થી પૂછે કે તમે તો સવારે ઉઠીને બધા કામ કરી લો છો અને ખબર પણ નહી લાગતી. વહુએ કહ્યું -મેં વિચાર્યું કે તમે સવારે જલ્દી ઉઠીને બધા કામ પોતે કરી લો છો અને હું મોડે ઉઠું છું . આ પર બન્ને સાસ-વહુ નજર રાખવા લાગી કે કોણ છે જે સવારે જલ્દી આવીને બધા કામ કરીને ચાલ્યું જાય છે.
ઘણા દિવસો પછી ધોબણએ જોયું કે એક કન્યા અંધેરામાં ઘરે આવે છે અને બધા કામ કર્યા પછી ચાલી જાય છે. જ્યારે એ જવા લાગી તો સોના ધોબણ એમના પગે પર પડી ગઈ , અને પૂછવા લાગી કે તમે કોણ છો જો આ રીતે છુપીને આવી મારા ઘરની ચાકરી કરો છો ?

ત્યારે કન્યા એ સાધું એ કહેલી બધી વાત કહી. સોના ધોબણ પરિવ્રતા હતી , એમાં તેજ હતું. સોના ધોબણના પતિ અસ્વસ્થ હતા. એમને એમની વહુને એમના પરત આવવા સુધી ઘર જ રહેવાનું કહ્યું.
સોના ધોબણે જેમજ એમની માંગનું સિંદૂર કન્યાની માંગમાં લાગાવ્યું એમનો પતિ મરી ગયું. એ વાતથી એમને ખબર પડી કે એ ઘરથી જળ આપ્યા વગર ચાલી હતી. આ સોચીને જ રસ્તામાં જ્યાં પીપળનું પેડ મળશે તો એને ભંવરી આપીને એમની પરિક્રમા કરીને જળ ગ્રહણ કરશે.
એ દિવસે સોમવતી અમાવસ્યા હતી. બ્રાહ્મણ ના ઘરે પકવાનની જગ્યા એણે ઈંટના ટુકડાથી 108 વાર પરિક્રમા આપી. 108 વાર પીપળના ઝાડની પરિક્રમાની અને એને જળ ગ્રહણ કર્યા. એવું કરતા જ એમનું મરણ પતિ જીવતો થઈ ગયું. આથી સોમવતી અમાવસ્યાના દિવસથી શરૂ કરીને જે માણસ દરેક અમાવસ્યા પર પરિક્રમા આપે છે , એમને સુખ અને સૌભાગ્યમાં વૃદ્ધિ થાય છે. પીપળના ઝાડમાં બધા દેવી દેવતાઓના વાસ હોય છે આથી જે માણસ દરેક અમાવસ્યા ને ન કરી શકે એ દર સોમવારે પડતી અમાવસ્યાને દિવસે 108 વસ્તુઓથી પરિક્રમા આપી સોના ધોબણ અને ગૌરી ગણેશના પૂજન કરે છે , એને અખંડ સૌભાગ્ય મળે છે.

એ પ્રચલિત પરંપરા છે કે પહેલી સોમવતી અમાવસ્યાના દિવસે ધાન , પાન ,હળદર, સિંદૂર અને સોપારીની પરિક્રમા અપાય છે. એ પછી સોમવતી અમાવસ્યાને તમારા સામર્થય મુજબ ફળ, મિઠાઈ, સુહાનની,સામગ્રી , વગેરે થી પણ પરિક્રમા આપી શકાય છે અને પરિક્રમા પર ચઢાવેલ સામાન કોઈ બ બ્રાહ્મણ નનદ કે ભાણેજને આપી શકાય છે.
