ज़हीरुद्दीन बाबर को अच्छी तरह एहसास था कि उसकी फ़ौज दुश्मन के मुक़ाबले पर आठ गुणा कम है। इसलिए उसने एक ऐसी चाल चली जो इब्राहिम लोदी के वहम और गुमान में भी नहीं थी। उसने पानीपत के मैदान में ऑटोमन तुर्कों की युद्ध रणनीति इस्तेमाल करते हुए चमड़े के रस्सों से सात सौ बैलगाड़ियां एक साथ बांध दी। उनके पीछे उसके तोपची और बंदूकबरदार आड़ लिए हुए थे।
उस ज़माने में तोपों का निशाना कुछ ज्यादा अच्छा नहीं हुआ करता था लेकिन जब उन्होंने अंधाधुंध गोलाबारी शुरू की तो कान फाड़ देने वाले धमाकों और बदबूदार धुएं ने इब्राहिम लोदी की फौज को के होशोहवाश उड़ा दिए और इससे घरबराकर जिसको जिधर मौका मिला, उधर सेना भाग गई।
बारूद का इस्तेमाल
ये पानीपत की पहली लड़ाई थी और उस दौरान हिंदुस्तान में पहली बार किसी जंग में बारूद का इस्तेमाल किया गया था। 50 हज़ार सिपाहियों के अलावा इब्राहिम लोदी के पास एक हज़ार जंगी हाथी भी थे लेकिन सिपाहियों की तरह उन्होंने भी कभी तोपों के धमाके नहीं सुने थे।
इसलिए पोरस के हाथियों की तारीख दोहराते हुए वो जंग में हिस्सा लेने के बजाय यूं भाग खड़े हुए कि उलटा लोदी की सेना ही उसकी जद में आ गई। बाबर के 12 हज़ार प्रशिक्षित घुड़सवार इसी पल का इंतजार कर रहे थे। उन्होंने बिजली की रफ्तार से आगे बढ़ते हुए लोदी की सेना को चारों तरफ से घेर लिया और कुछ ही देर बाद बाबर की जीत निश्चित हो गई।
तुर्कों से रिश्ता
इतिहासकार पॉल के डेविस ने अपनी किताब 'हंड्रेड डिसाइसिव बैटल्स' में इस जंग को तारीख की सबसे निर्णायक युद्धों में एक करार दिया है। ये मुगल सल्तनत की शुरुआत थी। ऑटोमन युद्ध रणनीति के अलावा इस जीत में दो तुर्क तोपचियों उस्ताद अली और मुस्तफा ने भी अहम भूमिका निभाई थी। उन्हें ऑटोमन साम्राज्य के पहले सुल्तान सलीम प्रथम ने बाबर को तोहफे के तौर पर दिया था।
बाबर के बेटे और उत्तराधिकारी हुमायूं को ऑटोमन तुर्कों का ये एहसान याद था। वो सलीम प्रथम के बेटे सलमान द ग्रेट को एक खत लिखकर शुक्रिया अदा किया। हुमायूं के बेटे अकबर ने ऑटोमन तुर्कों के साथ किसी तरह का संबंध कायम करने की कोशिश नहीं की।
तुर्कों का भारत पर असर
उसका एक कारण ये हो सकता है कि ऑटोमन तुर्क ईरान के सफ़वी राजवंश से लगातार युद्ध की हालत में थे और अकबर सफ़वियों को नाराज़ नहीं करना चाहते थे। अलबत्ता उनके उत्तराधिकारियों शाहजहां और औरंगज़ेब ने तुर्कों के साथ अच्छे संबंध बनाए रखे थे। मुग़ल ऑटोमन तुर्कों को दुनिया के तमाम मुसलमानों का खलीफा मानते थे। सिर्फ मुगल ही नहीं बल्कि हिंदुस्तान के दूसरे मुस्लिम रियासतें भी तुर्कों को अपना खलीफा समझते थे।
सत्ता पर बैठते ही ये सुल्तान तुर्कों को अपनी स्वीकृति के लिए संदेशा भेजते थे। टिपू सुल्तान ने मैसूर की गद्दी पर बैठने के बाद एक विशेष दल कुस्तुनतुनिया (तुर्कों की राजधानी) भेजा था ताकि उस वक्त के खलीफा सलीम तृतीय से अपनी सल्तनत के लिए स्वीकृति ले लें।
प्रथम विश्व युद्ध
सलीम तृतीय ने टिपू को अपने नाम का सिक्का ढालने और जुमे के खुतबे (जुमे की नमाज से पहले इमाम का भाषण) में अपना नाम पढ़वाने की इजाजत दे दी थी। ये अलग बात है कि उन्होंने टिपू की तरफ से अंग्रेजों के ख़िलाफ़ लड़ने के लिए सैन्य मदद की अपील ठुकरा दी थी क्योंकि उस वक्त वो खुद रूसियों से लड़ रहे थे और इस हालत में शक्तिशाली अंग्रेजों की दुश्मनी नहीं मोल लेना चाहते थे।

कभी यूरोप से लेकर एशिया तक अपनी ताकत का सिक्का जमाने वाले ऑटोमन तुर्कों की धार वक्त के साथ-साथ कुंद पड़ने लगी। इतिहासकार मानते हैं कि 18वीं और 19वीं सदी में साइंस और टेक्नॉलॉजी में यूरोप ने तेजी से प्रगति लेकिन तुर्क ऐसा नहीं कर सके। प्रथम विश्व युद्ध में तुर्कों ने जर्मनी का साथ दिया था और जंग के खत्म होते-होते तुर्कों का साम्राज्य हाशिये पर चला गया।
तुर्कों के खलीफा
हिंदुस्तान के मुसलमानों को इसका बड़ा दुख हुआ क्योंकि वो तुर्की के खलीफाओं को अपना धार्मिक गुरु मानते थे। उन्होंने 1919 में मौलाना मोहम्मद अली और मौलाना शौकत अली के नेतृत्व में खिलाफत आंदोलन की शुरुआत की। हिंदुस्तानी मुसलमानों ने अंग्रेजी साम्राज्य को धमकी दी की कि अगर उन्होंने तत्कालीन तुर्क खलीफा अब्दुल हमीद को तख्ता से हटाने की कोशिश की तो हिंदुस्तानी मुसलमान अंग्रेजों के ख़िलाफ़ बगावत कर देंगे।
साल 1920 में कांग्रेस भी इस आंदोलन से जुड़ गई। महात्मा गांधी के असहयोग आंदोलन की शुरुआत खिलाफत के मुहिम से ही हुई थी।
सियासत और मजहब
दिलचस्प बात ये है कि जिन्ना ने इसका साथ नहीं दिया था क्योंकि उनका मानना था कि ये राजनीति को धर्म से जोड़ने की कोशिश है जो उनकी नज़र में सही नहीं था। लेकिन 1922 में ही मुस्तफा कमाल पाशा ने ऑटोमन ख़लीफ़ाओं की जगह सत्ता संभाल ली और अब्दुल हमीद को सत्ता से बेदख़ल कर ख़िलाफ़त व्यवस्था को ही ख़त्म कर दिया था। इस तरह से 623 साल तक चलने वाली खिलाफत व्यवस्था खत्म हो गई।
