શ્રાવણ સોમવારની કથા મુજબ અમરપુર નગરમાં એક શ્રીમંત વેપારી રહેતો. દૂર-દૂર સુધી એમનો વ્યાપાર ફેલાયેલો હતો. નગરમાં એ વેપારીનુંં બધા લોકો માન-સન્માન કરતા હતા.આટલું બધુ હોવા છતા પણ વ્યાપારી અંતરમનથી ખૂબ દુ:ખી હતો. કારણ કે એ વેપારીનો કોઈ પુત્ર નહોતો.
દિવસ-રાત એને એક જ ચિંતા સતાવી રહી હતી.એના મૃત્યુ પછી તેનો આટલો મોટો વેપાર અને ધન-સંપત્તિ કોણ સંભાળશે.

પુત્ર મેળવવાની ઈચ્છાથી એ વ્યાપારી દર સોમવારે ભગવાન શિવની વ્રત-પૂજા કરતો હતો. સાંજે વેપારી શિવમંદિરમાં જઈને ભગવાન શિવ સામે ઘીનો દીપક પ્રગટાવતો હતો.
એ વ્યાપારીની ભક્તિ જોઈને એક દિવસ પાર્વતીજીએ ભગવાન શિવને કહ્યું - હે પ્રાણનાથ, એ વ્યાપારી તમારો સાચો ભક્ત છે. કેટલા દિવસોથી એ સોમવારનું વ્રત અને પૂજા નિયમિત રીતે કરી રહ્યો છે. ભગવાન તમે આ વ્યાપારીની મનોકામના જરૂર પૂર્ણ કરો .
ભગવાન શિવે મલકાતાં કહ્યું - હે પાર્વતી ! આ સંસારમાં બધા એમના કર્મ મુજબ ફળની પ્રાપ્તિ કરે છે. પ્રાણી જેવા કર્મ કરે છે, એમને એવાજ ફળ પ્રાપ્ત થાય છે.
આમ છતા પાર્વતીજી રાજી ન થયા. એમને આગ્રહ કરતા કહ્યું- નહી પ્રાણનાથ તમારે આ વ્યાપારીની ઈચ્છા પૂરી કરવી જ પડશે. એ તમારો અનન્ય ભક્ત છે. દરેક સોમવારે તમારું વિધિપૂર્વક વ્રત રાખે છે અને પૂજા અર્ચના પછી તમને ભોગ લગાવીને એક સમય ભોજન ગ્રહણ કરે છે. તમારે તેને પુત્ર પ્રાપ્તિનું વરદાન આપવું જ પડશે.
એ જ રાતે ભગવાન શિવે સ્વપ્નમાં એ વ્યાપારીને દર્શન આપી એને પુત્ર પ્રાપ્તિનું વરદાન આપ્યું અને તેનો પુત્રના 16 વર્ષ સુધી જીવતો રહેવાની વાત પણ કહી.
ભગવાનના વરદાનથી વેપારીને ખુશી તો થઈ પણ પુત્રના અલ્પઆયુની ચિંતાએ ખુશીને નષ્ટ કરી દીધી. વ્યાપારી પહેલાની જેમ જ સોમવારનું વિધિવત વ્રત કરતો રહ્યો. થોડા મહીના પછી એમના ઘરે ખૂબ સુંદર પુત્રનો જન્મ થયો. પુત્ર જન્મથી વ્યાપારીના ઘરમાં ખુશીઓ ભરી ગઈ. ખૂબ ધૂમધામથી પુત્ર જન્મના સમારોહ ઉજવ્યો. .
વ્યાપારીને પુત્ર-જન્મની વધુ ખુશી નહોતી થઈ. કારણકે એ પુત્રના અલ્પ આયુનું રહસ્ય જાણતો હતો આ રહસ્ય ઘરમાં કોઈને ખબર નહોતી. વિદ્ધાન બ્રાહ્મણોને આ પુત્રનું નામ અમર રાખ્યું.
જ્યારે અમર 12 વર્ષનો થયો તો અભ્યાસ માટે એને વારાણસી મોકલવાનું નક્કી થયું. વ્યાપારીએ અમરના મામા દીપચંદને બોલાવ્યો અને કહ્યું કે અમરને શિક્ષા મેળવવા માટે વારાણસી મૂકી આવો. અમર એના મામા સાથે શિક્ષા મેળવવા માટે નીકળી પડ્યો. રસ્તામાં જ્યાં પણ અમર અને દીપચંદ રાત્રે વિશ્રામ માટે રોકાતા, ત્યાં યજ્ઞ કરતા અને બ્રાહ્મણોને ભોજન કરાવતા હતા. લાંબી યાત્રા પછી અમર અને દીપચંદ એક નગરમાં પહૉંચ્યા. એ નગરમાં રાજાની કન્યાના લગ્નની ખુશીમાં આખું નગર શણગાર્યું હતું. નક્કી સમય પર વરઘોડો આવી ગયો. પણ વરના પિતા એના દીકરો એક આંખથી કાણો હોવાને કારણ બહુ ચિંતિંત હતો. એને આ વાતનો ભય હતો કે રાજાને આ વાતની ખબર પડશે તો એ લગ્નની ના ન પાડી દે. આવુ થશે તેમની બદનામી થશે.

વરના પિતાએ અમરને જોયો તો એમના મગજમાં એક વિચાર આવ્યું. એમને વિચાર્યું કે આ છોકરાને વર(દૂલ્હા) બનાવી રાજકુમારી સાથે લગ્ન કરાવી દઉં ? વરના પિતા એ આ વિષયમાં અમર અને દીપચંદ સાથે વાત કરી. દીપચંદે ધન મેળવવાના લોભમાં વરના પિતાની વાત સ્વીકાર કરી. અમરે વરના વસ્ત્ર પહેરીને રાજકુમારી ચંદ્રિકા સાથે લગ્ન કરી લીધા. રાજાએ બહુ ધન આપી રાજકુમારીને વિદાય કરી. અમર જ્યારે પરત આવી રહ્યા હતા તો તે સત્ય છુપાવી ન શક્યો. તેણે રાજકુમારીની ઓઢણી પર લખી દીધું- "રાજકુમારી ચંદ્રિકા , તમારુ લગ્નતો મારી સાથે થયું છે, હું તો વારાણસીમાં શિક્ષા મેળવવા જઈ રહ્યો છું હવે તમને જે નવયુવકની પત્ની બનવું પડશે, એ કાણો માણસ છે.
જ્યારે રાજકુમારીએ એમની ઓઢણી પર લખેલું વાંચ્યું તો એને છોકરાની સાથે જવાની ના પાડી નાખી. રાજાએ બધી વાત જાણી રાજકુમારીને મહેલમાં રાખી લીધી. બીજી બાજુ અમર તેના મામા સાથે વારાણસી પહોંચી ગયો. અમરે ગુરૂકુળમાંં ભણવુ શરૂ કરી દીધું.
જ્યારે અમરની આયુ 16 વર્ષની થઈ તો તેણે એક યજ્ઞ કર્યો. યજ્ઞની સમાપ્તિ પર બ્રાહ્મણોને ભોજન કરાવ્યું અને ખૂબ વસ્ત્ર દાન કર્યા. રાત્રે અમર તેના શયનકક્ષમાં સૂઈ ગયો.. શિવના વરદાન મુજબ શયનાવસ્થામાં જ અમરના પ્રાણ-પખેરું ઉડી ગયા. સૂર્યોદય પર મામા અમરને મૃત જોઈ વિલાપ કરવા લાગ્યા. બધા લોકો એકત્ર થઈ ગયા.
મામાના રડતા-અને વિલાપ કરતા પાસેથી પસાર થતા શિવ-પાર્વતીએ પણ સાંભળ્યા. પર્વતીજીએ ભગવાનને કહ્યુ - 'પ્રાણનાથ !મારાથી આ રડવાના સ્વર સહન નથી થઈ રહ્યા. તમે આ માણસના કષ્ટને જરૂર દૂર કરો.
ભગવાન શિવ પાર્વતીજી સાથે અદ્રશ્ય થઈ ગયા પાસે. જઈને જોયું તો પાર્વતીને બોલ્યા- - 'પાર્વતી! આ તો એ વ્યાપારીનો જ પુત્ર છે. મે એને 16 વર્ષની આયુનું જ વરદાન આપ્યું હતું. એની આયુ પૂરી થઈ ગઈ છે.
પાર્વતીજીએ પછી ભગવાન શિવથી નિવેદન કર્યુ 'હે પ્રાણનાથ ! તમે આ છોકરાને જીવતો કરો. નહી તો એના માતા-પિતા પુત્રના મૃત્યું ના કારણે રડ્તા-રડ્તા પોતાના પ્રાણ ત્યજી દેશે. આ છોકરાના પિતા તો તમારા પરમ ભક્ત છે. વર્ષોથી સોમવારના વ્રત કરીને તમને ભોગ લગાવી રહ્યા છે.
પાર્વતીજીના નિવેદન પર ભગવાન શિવે એ છોકરાને જીવતો થવાનું વરદાન આપ્યું અને થોડી વાર પછી જ એ જીવતો થઈ ઉભા થઈ ગયો.

શિક્ષા સમાપ્ત કરીને અમર મામા સાથે પોતાના નગરની તરફ ચાલી નીકળ્યો. બન્ને ચાલતા ચાલતા એ નગરમાં પહોંચ્યા,જ્યાં અમરના લગ્ન થયા હતા. એ નગરમાં પણ અમરે યજ્ઞનું આયોજન કરાવ્યું. પાસેથી પસાર થતા રાજાએ યજ્ઞના આયોજન જોયું.
રાજાએ અમરને તરતજ ઓળખી લીધો.. યજ્ઞ સમાપ્ત થયા પછી રાજા અમર અને એના મામાને મહેલમાં લઈ ગયા અને થોડા દિવસ મહેલમાં રાખી પુષ્કળ ધન-વસ્ત્ર આપી રાજકુમારી સાથે વિદાય આપી.
રસ્તામાં એની સુરક્ષા માટે રાજાએ બહુ સૈનિકો સાથે મોકલ્યા. દીપચંદ નગરમાં પહોંચતા જ એક દૂતને મોકલીને એમના આવવાની સૂચના આપી. એના દીકરા અમરના જીવીત પરત ફરવાની સૂચનાથી વ્યાપારી ખૂબ પ્રસન્ન થયો.
વ્યાપારીએ ખુદને પોતાની પત્ની સાથે ખુદને એક રૂમમા બંધ કરી રાખ્યો હતો. ભૂખા તરસ્યા રહી વ્યાપારી પોતાના દીકરાની પ્રતીક્ષા કરી રહ્યો હતો. એને પ્રતિજ્ઞા કરી રાખી હતી કે જો એના દીકરાના મૃત્યુના સમાચાર મળતા જ એ બન્ને જ પોતાના પ્રાણ ત્યજી દેશે.
વ્યાપારી એમની પત્ની સાથે નગરના દ્વાર પર પહોંચ્યા. એમના દીકરાના લગ્નના સમાચાર સાંભળી પુત્રવધુ રાજકુમારી ચંદ્રિકાને જોઈ એમની ખુશીનો ઠેકાણો ન રહ્યો. એ જ રાત્રે ભગવાન શિવ વ્યાપારીની સ્વપ્નમાં આવીને કહ્યું - હે શ્રેષ્ઠી હું તમારા સોમવારના વ્રત કરવાથી અને વ્રતકથા સાંભળવાથી પ્રસન્ન થઈને તમારા પુત્રને લાંબી આયુષ્ય આપ્યુ છે. વ્યાપારી ખૂબ ખુશ થયો. સોમવારનું વ્રત કરવાથી વ્યાપારીના ઘરમાં ખુશીઓ આવી ગઈ. શાસ્ત્રોમાં લખ્યું છે કે જે સ્ત્રી-પુરૂષ સોમવારનું વ્રત વિધિથી કરતા અને વ્રતકથા સાંભળે છે એની દરેક ઈચ્છા પૂરી થાય છે.
