દિવાળીના બે દિવસ પહેલા એટલે કે ધનતેરસના દિવસથી જ દીપ પ્રજવ્વલિત કરવાની પ્રથા છે.
કાર્તિક કૃષ્ણ પક્ષની ત્રયોદશી તિથિના દિવસે જ ભગવાન ધન્વંતરીનો જન્મ થયો હતો. આથી આ તિથિને ધન ત્રયોદશી કે ધનતેરસના રૂપમાં ઓળખાય છે.
ભગવાન ધનવંતરી જયારે પ્રગટ થયાં હતા તેમના હાથમાં અમૃતથી ભરેલો કળશ હતો. ભગવાન ધનવંતરી કળશ લઈને પ્રગટ ટ થયા હતા. તેથી આ દિવસે વાસણ ખરીદવાની પરંપરા છે.
લોકમતાનુસાર કહેવાય છે કે આ દિવસે વાસણ કે ચાંદીની વસ્તુ વગેરે ખરીદવાથી તેમાં તેર ગણો વધારો થાય છે. આ અવસરે ધાણાના બીજ ખરીદી ઘરમાં મુકવામાં આવે છે. .
દિવાળી પછી આ બીજને લોકો પોતાના ખેતરમાં વાવે છે. કેટલાક લોકો કયારિયોમાં વાવે ધાણા સ્વાસ્થય માટે ઉત્તમ હોય છે,અને એ સ્વાદને પણ વધારે છે .
ધનતેરસના દિવસે ચાંદીના વાસણ કે ઝવેરાત ખરીદવાની પ્રથા છે . એવી માન્યતા છે કે આ ચન્દ્રમાનું પ્રતીક છે, જે શીતળતા પ્રદાન કરે છે અને આ દિવસ ચન્દ્ર હસ્ત નક્ષત્ર પણ છે.
ભગવાન ઘન્વંતરિ દેવતાઓના વૈદ્ય અને ચિકિત્સાના દેવતા માનવામાં આવે છે. તેથી ચિકિત્સકો માટે ધનતેરસનો દિવસ ખૂબ જ ખાસ હોય છે
