રેહાન ફઝલ
3 જુલાઈ, 1999ના રોજ ટાઇગર હિલ પર બરફ પડી રહ્યો હતો. રાત્રે સાડા નવ વાગ્યે ઑપ્સ રૂમમાં ફોનની ઘંટી વાગી. ઑપરેટરે કહ્યું કે કોર કમાન્ડર જનરલ કિશન પાલ મેજર જનરલ મોહિન્દર પુરી સાથે તાત્કાલિક વાત કરવા માગે છે.
બંને વચ્ચે કેટલીક મિનિટો સુધી વાતચીત ચાલી અને ત્યાર બાદ પુરીએ 56 માઉન્ટેન બ્રિગેડના ડેપ્યુટી કમાન્ડર એસવીઈ ડેવિડે કહ્યું, 'તપાસ કરો કે ટીવી રિપોર્ટર બરખા દત્ત આસપાસમાં છે કે કેમ? શું તેઓ ટાઇગર હિલ પર થઈ રહેલા ગોળીબારનું લાઇવ રિપોર્ટિંગ કરી રહ્યાં છે?'
લેફ્ટનન્ટ જનરલ મોહિન્દર પુરી યાદ કરતા કહે છે, 'મને ખબર પડી કે ટાઇગર હિલ પરના આપણા હુમલાની લાઇવ કૉમેન્ટરી તેઓ આપી રહ્યાં છે."
"અમે તરત જઈને કહ્યું કે આ બંધ કરી દો. અમે નહોતા ઇચ્છતા કે પાકિસ્તાનીઓને આ વાતની જાણ થાય."
જનરલ પુરીએ કહ્યું, "મેં આ હુમલાની માહિતી માત્ર અમારા કોર કમાન્ડરને આપી હતી."
"તેમણે આ વિશે સેનાના વડાને પણ જણાવ્યું નહોતું. એટલે મને નવાઈ લાગેલી કે આવા સંવેદનશીલ ઑપરેશનની લાઇવ કૉમેન્ટરી કેવી રીતે તેઓ કરી રહ્યાં છે?"
ચોથી જુલાઈએ સંરક્ષણ પ્રધાન જ્યોર્જ ફર્નાન્ડિઝે જ્યારે જાહેરાત કરી કે ટાઇગર હિલ પર ભારતે કબજો કરી લીધો છે, ત્યારે હકીકતમાં હજી ભારતીય સૈનિકોએ સંપૂર્ણપણે કબજો નહોતો કર્યો.
ટાઇગર હિલની ટોચે હજી પણ પાકિસ્તાનીઓ બેઠા હતા. તે વખતે ભારતીય સેનાના બે બહાદુર યુવા અફસરો લેફ્ટનન્ટ બલવાન સિંહ અને કૅપ્ટન સચીન નિમ્બાલકર શિખર પરથી પાકિસ્તાનીઓને ખદેડવા માટે પૂરી તાકાતથી લડી રહ્યા હતા.
તેઓ શિખરથી હજી 50 મીટર નીચે હતા ત્યારે બ્રિગેડના મુખ્ય મથકે સંદેશ પહોંચ્યો હતો કે, 'ધે આર શૉર્ટ ઑફ ધ ટૉપ.' (શિખરથી થોડે દૂર છે.)
શ્રીનગરથી ઉધમપુર થઈને આ સંદેશ દિલ્હી પહોંચ્યો ત્યાં સુધીમાં તેની વાક્યરચનામાં ફેરફાર થઈ ગયો હતો.
સંદેશ એવો પહોંચ્યો કે 'ધે આર ઑન ધ ટાઇગર ટૉપ.' (શિખરની ઉપર છે.) આવો ફેરફાર સાથેનો સંદેશ સંરક્ષણ પ્રધાન સુધી પહોંચ્યો ત્યારે પંજાબમાં તેઓ એક જાહેરસભાને સંબોધી રહ્યા હતા.
તેમણે લાંબું વિચાર્યા વિના સભામાં જ જાહેરાત કરી દીધી કે ટાઇગર હિલ પર ભારતનો કબજો થઈ ગયો છે.

પાકિસ્તાનનો વળતો હુમલો
જનરલ મોહિન્દર પુરી જણાવે છે કે તેમણે આ વાત કોર કમાન્ડર જનરલ કિશન પાલને જણાવી ત્યારે તેમનું પહેલું વાક્ય એવું જ હતું કે 'જાઓ ત્યારે શૅમ્પેનમાં સ્નાન કરી લો.'
તેમણે સેનાના વડા જનરલ મલિકને પણ ખબર પહોંચાડી અને તેમણે પણ મને ફોન કરીને આ સફળતા માટે અભિનંદન આપ્યાં.
પરંતુ વાત હજી પૂરી થઈ નહોતી. ટાઇગર હિલનું શિખર એટલું નાનું છે કે ત્યાં બહુ થોડા જવાનો જ રહી શકે.
પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકોએ અચાનક ઊંચાઈ પરથી ઢાળ પરના ભારતીય જવાનો પર વળતો ગોળીબાર શરૂ કરી દીધો હતો.
તે વખતે શિખર પર વાદળો છવાઈ ગયાં હતાં એટલે ભારતીય જવાનો ત્યાં રહેલા પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકોને જોઈ શકતા નહોતા. એ આક્રમણમાં ટોચ સુધી પહોંચી ગયેલા સાત ભારતીય જવાનો માર્યા ગયા હતા.
90 ડિગ્રીનું સીધું ચઢાણ
વિસ્તારની બરાબર તપાસ કર્યા બાદ ભારતીય સૈનિકોએ પૂર્વ તરફથી ઉપર જવાનું નક્કી કર્યું હતું. અહીં 90 ડિગ્રીનું એકદમ સીધું અને બહુ મુશ્કેલ ચઢાણ હતું.
પરંતુ એક આ જ માર્ગ હતો કે ઉપર સુધી પહોંચીને પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકોને ખદેડી શકાય.
સૈનિકો રાત્રે 8 વાગ્યે પોતાના બેઝ કૅમ્પમાંથી નીકળ્યા અને સતત ઉપર ચઢતા રહ્યા. બીજા દિવસે સવારે 11 વાગ્યે તેઓ ટાઇગર હિલની ટોચની બહુ નજીક પહોંચી ગયા હતા.
ઘણી જગ્યાએ તેમણે ઉપર ચઢવા માટે દોરડા બાંધવા પડ્યા. તેમની પીઠ પર બંદૂકો બાંધી રાખવામાં આવી હતી.
વરિષ્ઠ પત્રકાર હરિન્દર બાવેજાએ પોતાના પુસ્તક 'અ સોલ્જર્સ ડાયરી - કારગિલ ધ ઇનસાઇટ સ્ટોરી'માં લખ્યું છે, "એક તબક્કો એવો આવ્યો કે પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકોની નજરમાંથી તેઓ હવે બચી શકે તેમ નહોતા."
5 જુલાઈએ 18 ગ્રેનેડિયર્સના 25 સૈનિકોએ ફરી તે તરફ આગેકૂચ કરી. પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકોએ તેમના પર પણ ભારે ગોળીબાર કર્યો. પાંચ કલાક સુધી સતત ગોળીબાર ચાલતો રહ્યો હતો.18 ભારતીય સૈનિકોએ પીછેહઠ કરવી પડી હતી. હવે પાછળ સાત ભારતીય સૈનિકો જ રહ્યા હતા.

'ધ બ્રેવ' પુસ્કતના લેખિકા રચના બિષ્ટ રાવત કહે છે, "સાડા અગિયાર વાગ્યે 10 પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકો નીચે જોવા માટે આવ્યા હતા કે ભારતીય સૈનિકોમાંથી કોઈ બચ્યું છે ખરું. તે વખતે દરેક ભારતીય સૈનિક પાસે માત્ર 45 રાઉન્ડ ગોળીઓ બચી હતી."
"તેમણે પાકિસ્તાનીઓને નજીક આવવા દીધા. તે લોકોએ ક્રીમ કલરના પઠાણી સૂટ પહેરેલા હતા. તેઓ નજીક પહોંચ્યા કે તરત જ સાતેય ભારતીય સૈનિકોએ ગોળીબાર શરૂ કરી દીધો".
તેમાં એક હતા બુલંદશહરના રહેવાસી માત્ર 19 વર્ષના જુવાનજોધ ગ્રેનેડિયર યોગેન્દ્રસિંહ યાદવ.
તેઓ યાદ કરતા કહે છે, "અમે બહુ નજીકથી પાકિસ્તાનીઓ પર ગોળીઓ ચલાવી. તેમાંથી આઠને અમે પાડી દીધા, પણ બે જણ ભાગી જવામાં સફળ રહ્યા. તેમણે ઉપર જઈને જાણ કરી કે નીચે અમે ફક્ત સાત જણ જ છીએ."
લાશ પર પણ ગોળીબાર
યોગેન્દ્ર આગળ વાત કરતા કહે છે, "થોડી વારમાં 35 પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકોએ અમને ચારે બાજુથી ઘેરી લઈને હુમલો કર્યો. મારા છએ છ સાથી જવાનો માર્યા ગયા."
"હું ભારતીય અને પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકોની લાશો વચ્ચે પડ્યો હતો. પાકિસ્તાનીઓ બધાને જ ખતમ કરી દેવા માગતા હતા એટલે તેઓ લાશો પર પણ ગોળીબાર કરી રહ્યા હતા."
"હું મારી આંખ બંધ કરીને મોતનો ઇંતઝાર કરતો રહ્યો. મારા પગમાં, હાથમાં અને શરીરના જુદા જુદા ભાગોમાં 15 ગોળીઓ વાગી હતી, પણ મારો જીવ હજી ગયો નહોતો."
તે પછી જે કંઈ બન્યું તે કોઈ ફિલ્મની નાટકીય ઘટનાથી ઓછું નહોતું.
યોગેન્દ્ર કહે છે, "પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકોએ અમારાં બધાં હથિયારો કબજામાં લઈ લીધાં. જોકે મારા ખિસ્સામાં રાખેલો ગ્રેનેડ શોધી ન શક્યા. મેં પૂરી તાકાત એકઠી કરીને ગ્રેનેડ કાઢ્યો, તેની પિન હટાવી અને આગળ જઈ રહેલા પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકો પર ફેંકી દીધો."
"ગ્રેનેડ એક પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકની હેલમેટ પર પડ્યો અને તેના ત્યાંને ત્યાં ચીંથરાં થઈ ગયાં. મેં એક પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકની લાશ પાસે પડેલી પીકા રાઇફલ ઉઠાવી અને ધડાધડ ગોળીબાર શરૂ કરી દીધો. મારા ફાયરિંગમાં પાંચ સૈનિકો માર્યા ગયા."
નાળામાં કૂદકો
તે વખતે જ યોગેન્દ્રને પાકિસ્તાની વાયરલેસનો અવાજ સંભળાયો. તેમાં સંદેશ આપવામાં આવી રહ્યો હતો કે અહીંથી પાછા હટી જાવ અને 500 મીટર નીચે ભારતના એમએમજી બેઝ પર હુમલો કરો.
ત્યાં સુધીમાં યોગેન્દ્રના શરીરમાંથી બહુ લોહી વહી ગયું હતું. ગમે તે ઘડીએ બેહોશ થઈ જવાય તેવી સ્થિતિ હતી.
ત્યાં એક પાણીનું નાળું હતું અને તેમાં પાણી વહી રહ્યું. તેઓ નાળામાં કૂદી પડ્યા અને તેમાં તણાતા-તણાતા પાંચ મિનિટમાં 400 મીટર નીચે સુધી પહોંચી ગયા.
ત્યાં રહેલા ભારતીય સૈનિકોએ તેમને નાળામાંથી બહાર કાઢ્યા. લોહી બહુ વહી ગયું હોવાથી હવે યોગેન્દ્ર યાદવની આંખો કશું સ્પષ્ટ જોઈ પણ શકતી નહોતી.
સીઓ ખુશહાલસિંહ ચૌહાણે તેમને પૂછ્યું કે તમે મને ઓળખી શકો છો ખરા? યાદવે ત્રૂટક શબ્દોમાં કહ્યું કે, 'સાહેબ હું તમારા અવાજને ઓળખું છું, જય હિંદ સાહેબ.'
યોગેન્દ્ર યાદવે તેમને માહિતી આપી કે પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકોએ ટાઇગર હિલ ખાલી કરી દીધું છે. તે લોકો હવે આપણા એમએમજી બેઝ પર હુમલો કરવાના છે. આટલું કહ્યું પછી યાદવ બેહોશ થઈ ગયા હતા.
તેમની માહિતી પ્રમાણે જ થોડી વાર પછી પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકોએ ત્યાં હુમલો કર્યો હતો પણ ત્યાં સુધીમાં ભારતીય જવાનોએ તૈયારીઓ કરી લીધી હતી.
બાદમાં યોગેન્દ્રસિંહ યાદવને તેમની અસાધારણ બહાદુરી બદલ સર્વોચ્ચ વીરતા પદક પરમવીર ચક્રથી સન્માનિત કરવામાં આવ્યા હતા.

ભારતીય સેનાની આબરૂનો સવાલ
આ બાજુ રેડિયો પર સંદેશ પર સંદેશ આવી રહ્યા હતા. તેનું કારણ એ કે ટાઇગર હિલ પર કબજાની જાહેરાત કરી દેવાઈ હતી અને તેની ખબર બ્રિગેડ મુખ્ય કાર્યાલય સુધી પહોંચી ગઈ હતી.
બ્રિગેડના ઉચ્ચ અફસરો ઝડપથી ટાઇગર હિલ પર પહોંચીને ત્યાં ભારતીય ધ્વજ લહેરાવવા માગતા હતા. કોઈ પણ ભોગે તેઓ આવું કરવા માગતા હતા.
ભારતીય સેના માટે હવે આબરૂનો સવાલ થઈ ગયો હતો. દુનિયાને જાણ કરી દેવાઈ હતી કે ટાઇગર હિલ અમારા કબજામાં છે ત્યારે આમ કરવું જરૂરી બન્યું હતું.
આ દરમિયાન 18 ગ્રેનેડિયર્સની એક કંપની કૉલર શિખર પર પહોંચી ગઈ હતી. તેના કારણે પાકિસ્તાનીઓએ હવે પોતાના વિસ્તારનું રક્ષણ કરવું પડે તેમ હતું. તેમનાં દળો અલગઅલગ હિસ્સામાં વહેંચી દેવાં પડ્યાં હતાં.
હરિન્દર બાવેજાએ પોતાના પુસ્તકમાં લખ્યું છે, "ભારતીય સેના આ જ તકની રાહ જોઈ રહી હતી. આ વખતે 23 વર્ષના કેપ્ટન સચિન નિમ્બાલકરની આગેવાનીમાં ભારતીય સૈનિકોએ ત્રીજી વાર આક્રમણ કર્યું."
"આટલી ઝડપથી હુમલો થશે તેવી અપેક્ષા પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકોને નહોતી. નિમ્બાલકર હવે આ પહાડીઓને સારી રીતે ઓળખતા હતા, કેમ કે તેઓ બે વાર ઉપર-નીચે જઈ આવ્યા હતા."
"તેમના જવાનો જરા પણ અવાજ કર્યા વિના ટાઇગર હિલના શિખરની એકદમ નજીક પહોંચી ગયા. થોડી જ વારમાં પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકોએ બનાવેલાં આઠ બંકરમાંથી એકનો કબજો કરી લીધો."
હવે પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકો માટે આમનેસામનેની લડાઈ હતી. તે લોકો ઉપર હોય અને ફાયદો ઉઠાવે તેવું હવે રહ્યું નહોતું.
રાત્રે દોઢ વાગ્યે ટાઇગર હિલના શિખર પર ભારતીય જવાનોએ કબજો કરી લીધો હતો. જોકે પહાડની બીજી બાજુના હિસ્સામાં હજી પણ પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકો અડ્ડો જમાવીને બેઠા હતા.
જીત માટે ચૂકવવી પડી ભારે કિંમત
તળેટીમાં રહેલા સાથીઓ ખુશીની બૂમો પાડી રહ્યા હતા તે ટોચ પર રહેલા ભારતીય સૈનિકોને સંભળાઈ. કદાચ તેમને પણ સંદેશ મળી ગયો હતો કે શિખર પર હવે આપણો કબજો છે.
હવે એ ચિંતા પણ ટળી ગઈ હતી કે દુનિયા સામે ભારતીય સંરક્ષણ પ્રધાનનું નીચાજોણું થાય.
જોકે, ભારતીય સૈનિકો થાકી ગયા હતા. લેફ્ટનન્ટ બલવાન બહુ આઘાતમાં હતા, કેમ કે આક્રમણ કર્યું ત્યારે તેમની સાથે 20 જવાનો હતા, હવે માત્ર બે જણ જીવતા બચ્યા હતા.
બાકીના મોટા ભાગના માર્યા ગયા હતા અથવા બહુ ગંભીર રીતે ઘાયલ થયા હતા. નાસી ગયેલા પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકો પાછળ કેવા હથિયારો છોડી ગયા છે તેની તપાસ પણ શરૂ કરી દેવાઈ.
પાછળ જે જથ્થો મળ્યો તે જોઈને ભયની કંપારી છૂટી ગઈ. એટલો બધો સામાન ત્યાં હતો કે અઠવાડિયાઓ સુધી તેઓ લડી શકે તેમ હતા. આટલા વજનદાર શસ્ત્રો અને 1,000 કિલોની 'લાઇટ ઇન્ફૅન્ટ્રી ગન' હેલિકૉપ્ટર વિના આટલી ઊંચાઈએ લાવી શકાય નહીં.
પાકિસ્તાની યુદ્ધકેદીઓ
બ્રિગેડિયર એમપીએસ બાજવા
ટાઇગર હિલ પર હુમલો થયો તેના બે દિવસ પહેલાં ભારતીય સૈનિકોએ એક પાકિસ્તાનીને જીવતો પકડી લીધો હતો. તેનું નામ મોહમ્મદ અશરફ હતું. તે બહુ ગંભીર રીતે ઘવાયો હતો.
બ્રિગેડિયર એમપીએસ બાજવા યાદ કરતા કહે છે, "મેં આપણા જવાનોને કહ્યું હતું કે તેને મારી પાસે નીચે લઈ આવો."
"હું તેની સાથે વાત કરવા માગતો હતો. તેને મારી પાસે લાવવામાં આવ્યો ત્યારે હું મારા બ્રિગેડિયરના યુનિફોર્મમાં હતો."
"મારી પાસે લાવીને તેની આંખો પરથી પટ્ટી હટાવવામાં આવી ત્યારે તે રડવા લાગ્યો."
"હું આ જોઈને નવાઈ પામી ગયો અને તેને પંજાબીમાં પૂછ્યું કે 'ક્યો રો રેયા તૂ?'
"તેમણે જવાબ આપ્યો, 'મેં જિંદગીમાં ક્યારેય કમાન્ડરને જોયો નહોતો. પાકિસ્તાનમાં તે લોકો (અફસરો) ક્યારેય અમને મળતા નથી."
"મારા માટે એ બહુ મોટી વાત છે કે તમે આટલા મોટા અફસર હોવા છતાં મારી સાથે મારી ભાષામાં વાત કરો છો."
"તમે જે રીતે મારી સારવાર કરાવી અને મને ખાવાનું આપ્યું તે પણ મારા માટે નવાઈની વાત છે."

સન્માન સાથે પરત કરાયા મૃતદેહો
ટાઇગર હિલ પર કબજો કરવાના અભિયાનમાં ભાગ લેનારા સૈનિકો સાથે સેના અધ્યક્ષ જનરલ વેદ પ્રકાશ મલિક (ડાબેથી) અને મેજર જનરલ મોહિંદર પુરી (ડાબેથી બીજા)
પહાડોમાં લડાઈ થાય ત્યારે વધુ સૈનિકોનો ભોગ લેવાતો હોય છે. એક કારણ એ કે ઘાયલ થયેલા સૈનિકને નીચે લાવવામાં સમય લાગતો હોય છે. ત્યાં સુધીમાં બહુ લોહી વહી જાય અને જીવ બચાવવો મુશ્કેલ બની જાય.
પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકો પણ મોટી સંખ્યામાં માર્યા ગયા હતા. જનરલ મોહિન્દર પુરી કહે છે, "ઘણા બધા પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકોની દફનવિધિ ભારતીય મૌલવીઓની હાજરીમાં ઇસ્લામી ઢબે કરવામાં આવી હતી."
શરૂઆતમાં આ લોકો પાકિસ્તાની સૈનિકો છે જ નહીં એમ કહીને મૃતદેહો સ્વીકારવા માટે પણ તૈયાર નહોતા. બાદમાં તેઓ મૃતદેહો સ્વીકારવા તૈયાર થયા હતા.
બ્રિગેડિયર બાજવા એક કિસ્સો સંભળાવે છે, "ટાઇગર હિલ પર જીત પછી થોડા દિવસો બાદ પાકિસ્તાન તરફથી મને એક રેડિયો સંદેશ મળ્યો હતો."
"રેડિયો પર સામેથી અવાજ આવ્યો કે 'હું સીઓ 188 એફએફ બોલું છું. હું ઇચ્છું છું કે તમે માર્યા ગયેલા અમારા સાથીઓના મૃતદેહો સોંપી દો".
બ્રિગેડિયર બાજવાએ પૂછ્યું કે બદલામાં તમે શું કરશો? તેમણે કહ્યું કે અમે પાછા જતા રહીશું અને અમને હટાવવા માટે તમારે હુમલો નહીં કરવો પડે.
બાજવા યાદ કરતા કહે છે, "લડાઈ ચાલી રહી હતી તેની વચ્ચે જ અમે તેમના સૈનિકોના મૃતદેહોને પાકિસ્તાની ઝંડામાં સન્માન સાથે લપેટ્યા હતા."
"મેં શરત રાખી હતી કે તમારે સ્ટ્રેચર સાથે લઈને આવવાનું રહેશે. તે લોકો સ્ટ્રેચર લઈને આવ્યા અને અમે પૂરી વિધિ સાથે તેમને મૃતદેહો સોંપી દીધા હતા. આ સમગ્ર કાર્યવાહીની અમે ફિલ્મ બનાવી હતી, જે આજે પણ યૂ-ટ્યૂબ પર જોઈ શકાય છે".
"તે લોકોએ અચાનક ગોળીબાર શરૂ કરી દીધો અને ભારતીય જવાનોને પીછેહઠ કરવા મજબૂર થવું પડ્યું. બે ભારતીય જવાનો ગંભીર રીતે ઘવાયા હતા. પીછેહઠ કરી રહેલા ભારતીય જવાનો પર પાકિસ્તાનીઓએ ઉપરથી મોટા પથ્થરોથી પણ હુમલો શરૂ કરી દીધો હતો."
