प्रेमी जोड़ों के लिए संत वैलेंटाइन एक ईश्वर की तरह थे। इसीलिए 14 फरवरी का दिन यानी जिस दिन उनकी मौत हुई थी, उसे कई देशों में उनकी याद में वैलेंटाइन डे के रूप में मनाया जाता है। अब प्राचीन रोम के ईसाई संत वैलेंटाइन को आख़िर एक चेहरा दिया जा सकता है।
विशेषज्ञों ने इसके लिए संत वैलेंटाइन के अवशेषों का अध्ययन किया और कंप्यूटर ग्राफिक्स की मदद ली। संत के ये अवशेष इटली के पादुवा प्रांत के मोन्सेलीचे में सैन जॉर्ज गिरजाघर में रखे हुए हैं।
विशेषज्ञों की राय है कि संत वैलेंटाइन का जन्म तीसरी सदी में हुआ था। विशेषज्ञों ने उन्हें जो चेहरा दिया है इसके अनुसार वो कम उम्र के एक देहाती व्यक्ति की तरह दिखते थे। संत वैलेंटाइन की ये तस्वीर आम तौर पर देखे जाने वाली उन तस्वीरों से अलग है जिसमें वो थोड़ी बड़ी उम्र के व्यक्ति लगते हैं।
चर्च की निगरानी में शोध
अवशेषों के आधार पर संत वैलेंटाइन के चेहरे को दोबारा बनाने के कोशिश साल 2017 में शुरु हुई। इसके लिए पादुवा विश्वविद्यालय के विशेषज्ञ एक साथ आए। इनमें हिस्टोरिकल, ज्योग्राफिकल एंड एन्टिक्विटी साइंस विभाग के फ्रांसेस्को वेरोनीज़, म्यूम्ज़ियम ऑफ़ पैथोलॉजी एनाटोमी के एलबेर्टो ज़ेनाटा और म्यूज़ियम ऑफ़ एंथ्रोपोलॉजी के निकोला कार्रारा ने एक टीम के रूप में काम किया। पुरातात्विक विज्ञान पर शोध करने वाली आर्क टीम के एक दल ने उनकी मदद की।
इस दल के इटली के सदस्य लूक बेज़ी ने संत की खोपड़ी के हिस्से की डिजिटल तस्वीरें लेने का काम किया जिसके बाद इसे आकार देने का काम शुरु किया गया। ये पूरा अभियान आधिकारिक तौर पर कैथलिक चर्च की निगरानी में किया गया। थ्री-डी फेशियल रेकग्निशन तकनीक में विशेषज्ञ ब्राज़ील के सिसेरो मोरेस ने इन डिजिटल तस्वीरों को आधार बना कर संत वैलेंटाइन की शक्ल बनाने का काम शुरु किया। इस पूरे शोध कार्य के नतीजों को बीते सप्ताह ही सार्वजनिक किया गया है।
एक नहीं तीन संत
माना जाता है कि संत वैलेंटाइन नाम के कोई एक व्यक्ति नहीं बल्कि कम से कम तीन लोग थे। सिसेरो मोरेस कहते हैं, "इस बारे में कैथलिक चर्च के पास उपलब्ध जानकारी कन्फ्यूज़ करने वाली है। इन तीनों की मौत 14 फरवरी को ही हुई थी।"
"मैंने इनमें से एक के चेहरे पर बीते साल काम किया था और तीसरे संत के चेहरे पर भी मैं काम करना चाहता हूं लेकिन वो अफ्रीका में किसी मिशन के दौरान मारे गए थे और उन्हें कहां दफ़नाया गया है इसकी कोई जानकारी उपलब्ध नहीं है।"
कैथलिक चर्च की वेबसाइट के अनुसार पहले संत वैलेंटाइन रोम से थे और एक पादरी और डॉक्टर के तौर पर काम करते थे। गॉथ सम्राट क्लाउडियस द्वितीय के दौरान वो लोगों की मदद करते थे। उन्हें गिरफ्तार कर फरवरी 14 को मौत की सज़ा दे दी गई। उन्हें फ्लेमिनियन वे में दफनाया गया था। बाद में उनके अवशेषों को संत प्राक्सेदेस के चर्च के नज़दीक बोसिलिका ऑफ़ सेंट मैरी मेजर ले जाया गया।
प्रेमियों के संत
दूसरे संत वैलेंटाइन रोम से करीब 60 मील दूर इंटराम्ना में पादरी थे। उन्हें भी सम्राट क्लाउडियस द्वितीय के दौरान गिरफ्तार कर यातनाएं दी गईं और बाद में सिर काट कर मार दिया गया।
तीसरे संत वैलेंटाइन की मौत अफ्रीका में हुई जहां उनके साथ उनके कई साथियों की भी मौत हो गई थी। उनके बारे में अधिक जानकारी उपलब्ध नहीं है। कैथलिक चर्च इन तीनों संतों को चर्च के प्रति वफादार और ईश्वर प्रेमी मानता है।

संत वैलेंटाइन को प्रेमियों को मिलाने वाले गुरू की तरह देखे जाने का कैथलिक चर्च के साथ कोई नाता नहीं है बल्कि इसका नाता ईसाई धर्म के आने से पहले की रोमन कहानियों से है।
प्राचीन रोम में उस वक्त हर साल 15 फरवरी को लुपरिकौल त्योहार मनाया जाता था। ये फुआनो भगवान को खुश करने के लिए किया जाता था। माना जाता था कि वो जानवरों और खेतों की रक्षा करते हैं और प्रजनन का आशीर्वाद देते हैं।
साल 494 में पोप ग्लेसियस प्रथम ने कैथोलिकों के इस त्योहार में हिस्सा लेने पर रोक लगा दी। इसके बदले चर्च ने तय किया कि त्योहार मनाने के लिए एक दिन निश्चित किया जाएगा और इसके बाद से ही शादी और पवित्र संबंधों के लिए संत वैलेंटाइन प्रेमियों के तारणहार की तरह देखे जाने लगे।
संत वैलेंटाइन से जुड़ी कहानियां
संत वैलेंटाइन से जुड़ी कम से कम दो किंवदंतियां हैं जिन्हें इसका श्रेय दिया गया है। पहला उदाहरण रोज़ ऑफ़ रिकन्सिलिएशन यानी सुलह के गुलाब की कहानी है। एक बार पादरी बगीचे से गुज़र रहे थे जहां उन्होंने एक प्रेमी जोड़े को आपस में झगड़ते देखा। संत वैलेंटाइन ने उन्हें एक लाल गुलाब दिया और कहा कि वो लोग आपस में शांति और प्रेम से रहें।
कुछ समय बाद इस प्रेमी जोड़े ने पादरी से शादी में आशीर्वाद देने के लिए पूछा तो पादरी ने उनकी शादी करा दी। एक कहानी एक ईसाई युवती की भी है जो बुतपरस्ती मानने वाले एक उम्रदराज़ व्यक्ति से प्रेम करती थीं। दोनों के परिवारों ने उनके प्रेम का विरोध किया। जब तक दोनों पारिवारिक विरोधों को पार कर पाए ये महिला क्षय रोग यानी टीबी की शिकार हो गईं।
तब संत वैलेंटाइन उस जगह गए जहां वो लड़की थी। वहां उसके पास में उसका प्रेमी भी था। आने वाली मौत की ख़बर के बावजूद दोनों साथ रहना चाहते थे। संत ने दोनों को गले लगाया जिसके बाद दोनों गहरी नींद में सो गए और हमेशा के लिए एक हो गए।
थ्री-डी तकनीक के सहारे बनाया चेहरा
ब्राज़ील के सांता कैटरीना में पैदा हुए और थ्री-डी विशेषज्ञ सिसेरो मोरेस संतों को खोज कर ये जानने की कोशिश कर रहे हैं कि अपने वक्त में वो कैसे दिखते होंगे। संत वैलेंटाइन के साथ, मोरेस ने अब तक नौ संतों और दो अन्य कैथलिकों समेत 11 धार्मिक शख्सियतों के चेहरों को दोबारा बनाया है।
वो कहते हैं, "ये काम करने का मौका मुझे अचानक ही मिला। एक बार मुझे पादुवा में म्यूज़ियम ऑफ़ द युनिवर्सिटी स्टडीज के 28 चेहरों को दोबारा बनाने के शोध में शामिल होने की पेशकश की। इस शोध के नतीजे एक साल बाद सार्वजनिक किए जाने थे।"
वो कहते हैं, "इन चेहरों में से एक था पादुवा के संत एंटोनी का और दूसरा लुका बेलुडी का। इसके बाद मुझे जोस लीरा ने कैथलिक चर्च से जुड़े संतों के चेहरों पर काम करने का न्योता मिला।"
मोरेस बताते हैं कि कुछ मामलों में उन्हें अन्य टीमों के साथ मिल कर काम करना पड़ा। जैसे कि संत वैलेंटाइन का चेहरा बनाने वली टीम में उन्हें डिजिटल तस्वीरें टीम के सदस्यों ने मुहैया करवाईं। फिर तस्वीरों में बारीकियों का अध्ययन करने के बाद उन्होंने उसको जीवंत रूप देना शुरू किया।
