"आपको पता है ना आज वैलेंटाइंस डे है? प्यार का दिन...मेरा मतलब प्यार सेलिब्रेट करने का दिन…?" मैंने थोड़ा झिझकते और थोड़ा डरते हुए दुबली-पतली सी दिखने वाली एक महिला से पूछा।

मोढ़ेनुमा पत्थर पर थकी-हारी सी बैठी उस महिला की उनींदी आंखों के नीचे काले घेरे थे और आंखें जैसे चेहरे के अंदर धंसी जा रही थीं। वो शायद कुछ चबा रही थीं, सवाल सुनकर एक कोने में थूककर बोलीं, "हां, पता है। वैलेंटाइंस डे है..तो?"

"क्या आपको किसी से प्यार है? आपकी ज़िंदगी में कोई है जो आपसे प्यार…?"

अभी मेरे सवाल पूरे नहीं हुए थे कि वो बीच में ही बोल पड़ीं, "कोठेवाली से कौन प्यार करता है मैडम? कोई प्यार करेगा तो हम यहां बैठे रहेंगे क्या?"

इतना कहकर उन्होंने मुझे बैठने का इशारा किया और मैं उनके बगल में ज़मीन पर ही बैठकर बातें करने लगी। सड़क के किनारे एक संकरी सी जगह में कई औरतें थोड़ी-थोड़ी दूरी पर बैठी हुई थीं। गली और मेन रोड के बीच जो थोड़ी सी जगह बची थी वहां पैदल चलने वाले आ-जा रहे थे। मैं दिल्ली की जीबी रोड पर बसे उस इलाके में थी जहां औरतें सेक्स बेचकर दो वक़्त के खाने का जुगाड़ करती हैं।

'मुझे जिस्म बेचने में कोई शर्म नहीं'

यहां आने से पहले मुझे 'ज़रा संभलकर' और 'सतर्क' होकर बातचीत करने की सलाहें मिली थीं। मैं भी अपनी तरफ़ से पूरी सतर्कता बरत रही थी। मैं जानना चाहती थी कि जिन औरतों के पास लोग सिर्फ सेक्स के लिए आते हैं, उनकी ज़िंदगी में प्यार जैसा कोई एहसास है भी या नहीं। वैलेंटाइंस डे का ज़िक्र उनके आंखों में हल्की सी चमक लाता है या नहीं?

यही सवाल मुझे इन गलियों तक खींच ले आए। मैंने सोचा था कि किसी ऐसी जगह पर जा रही हूं जहां रंग-बिरंगी झालरें और बत्तियां होंगी, जैसा कि हिंदी फ़िल्मों में दिखाया जाता है। लेकिन वहां ऐसा कुछ भी नहीं दिखा।

वो एक भीड़भाड़ वाला इलाका था जहां नज़र दौड़ाने पर एक छोटा सा पुलिस थाना, हनुमान मंदिर और कुछ दुकानें दिखीं। पूछताछ करने पर एक शख़्स ने गली की तरफ़ इशारा किया जहां एक हट्टी-कट्टी औरत कमर पर हाथ रखे खड़ी थीं। मैं जितना ज़्यादा मुस्कुरा सकती था उतना मुस्कुराकर उनसे मिली और ऐसे बर्ताव किया जैसे उन्हें पहले से जानती हूं। थोड़ी बातचीत के बाद वो मुझे बाकी औरतों से मिलाने को राज़ी हो गईं।

'जब तक है बोटी, मिलती रहेगी रोटी'

इस तरह मेरी मुलाकात उस दुबली-पतली औरत से हुई जिनका ज़िक्र मैंने ऊपर किया है। कर्नाटक की इस महिला का कहना था कि उन्होंने प्यार-व्यार की बातों को रद्दी के टोकरे में डाल दिया है। उन्होंने अपने चेहरे की ओर इशारा किया और बोलीं, "जब तक है बोटी, मिलती रहेगी रोटी। हमारे पास सब एकाध घंटे के लिए रुकते हैं, एंजॉय करने के लिए। बस, किस्सा ख़त्म।"

कोलकाता की निशा पिछले 12 साल से इस पेशे में हैं। उन्होंने कहा, "वैसे तो मर्द बड़ी-बड़ी बातें करते हैं लेकिन किसी की इतनी औकात नहीं है कि हमसे प्यार करने की हिम्मत करें। किसी में इतना दम नहीं कि हमें यहां से हटाकर अपने घर ले जाएं।"

क्या 12 साल में उन्होंने यहां किसी को प्यार होते नहीं देखा? इसके जवाब में उन्होंने कहा, "देखा है ना! लोग आते हैं, प्यार में कसमें-वादे करते हैं। शादी करते हैं, बच्चे भी होते हैं और कुछ साल के बाद छोड़कर चले जाते हैं।"

'प्यार भी किया, शादी भी की...'

36 साल की रीमा की कहानी कुछ ऐसी ही है। वो कहती हैं, "आपने पूछा तो बता रही हूं। मुझे प्यार हुआ था। अपने ही एक कस्टमर से। हमने शादी कर ली और हमारे तीन बच्चे भी हुए।"

रीमा को लगा था कि शादी के बाद उनकी ज़िंदगी सुधर जाएगी लेकिन वो बदतर हो गई। वो याद करती हैं, "वो दिर-रात शराब और ड्रग्स के नशे में धुत्त रहता था। मुझे मारता-पीटता था। ये सब तो मैंने बर्दाश्त किया लेकिन फिर उसने बच्चों पर हाथ उठाना शुरू कर दिया।"

आखिर रीमा ने तंग आकर उससे अलग होने का फ़ैसला किया और वापस उसी कोठे पर आ गईं, जहां से उन्हें हमेशा से निकालने का वादा किया गया था। हमारी बातचीत अभी चल ही रही थी कि एक औरत ने मुझे वहां बने ऊपर के कमरों में जाने को कहा।

उसने कहा, "मैडम, आप ऊपर कमरे में चले जाइए। बहुत सी लड़कियां मिल जाएंगी आपको वहां। आपको देखकर लोग यहां इकट्ठे हो रहे हैं, ये ठीक नहीं है।"

बंद, अंधेरे कमरों में

एक पल को सोचने के बाद मैं ऊपर के बने कमरों में जाने के लिए ऊंची-ऊंची सीढ़ियां चढ़ने लगी। दूसरी मंजिल पर पहुंचते ही अचानक अंधेरा हो गया। मैं डरकर चिल्लाई- यहां तो बिल्कुल अंधेरा है! किसी ने नीचे से जवाब दिया, "मोबाइल की लाइट जलाकर चले जाइए।"

हिम्मत करके मैंने मोबाइल की टॉर्च ऑन की और चौथे माले पर पहुंच गई। वहां पहुंचकर मैंने ख़ुद को तकरीबन 10-12 लड़कियों के बीच पाया। कुछ ने जींस टीशर्ट पहन रखा थी, कुछ ने साड़ी और कुछ सिर्फ स्पेगेटी और तौलिये में थीं ।

"आप फ़ोन में कुछ रिकॉर्ड तो नहीं कर रहीं? आपने कहीं कैमरा तो नहीं छुपाया है? फ़ोटो तो नहीं खींची कोई?" एकसाथ कई सवाल मेरी तरफ़ उछाल दिए गए। मैंने ना में सिर हिलाया और माहौल को भांपने की क़ोशिश की। वहां छोटे-छोटे कई कमरे थे जिनमें कुछ में मर्द भी थे। एक आदमी लक्ष्मी और गणेश की तस्वीरों को अगरबत्ती दिखा रहा था और एक कप में चाय उड़ेल रहा था।

वेश्यालय में भारत

वहां कोई लड़की राजस्थान से थी तो कोई पश्चिम बंगाल से। कोई मध्य प्रदेश से थी और कोई कर्नाटक से। मुझे उन छोटे कमरों में एक छोटा सा भारत नज़र आया। वो सारी लड़कियां भी मुझे अपने जैसी ही लग रही थीं। यही सब सोचते-सोचते मैंने अंगीठी ताप रही एक लड़की से पूछा कि क्या वो किसी से प्यार करती हैं? क्या उनकी ज़िंदगी में भी कोई 'स्पेशल' है?

वो हंसकर बोलीं, "अब तो कोई प्यार की बात कहेगा तो भी भरोसा नहीं करूंगी। पैसे दो, थोड़ी देर साथ रहो और जाओ लेकिन हमें प्यार के झूठे सपने मत दिखाओ।" वो लगातार बोलती गईं, "एक था जो मुझसे प्यार की बातें करता था और फिर प्यार के बहाने पैसे ऐंठने लगा। ऐसे कोई प्यार करता है क्या?"

पास खड़ी एक दूसरी लड़की ने कहा, "मेरा एक बेटा है, मैं उसी से प्यार करती हूं। वैसे तो मैं सलमान ख़ान से भी प्यार करती हूं। उसकी कोई फ़िल्म आ रही है क्या...?"

'आपका सवाल ही ग़लत है'

इतना कहते-कहते वो अचानक ज़ोर से चिल्लाई, "ऊपर! ऊपर!! ऊपर!!!" मैंने घबराकर इधर-उधर देखा। वो हंस पड़ी और बोली, "अरे कुछ नहीं मैडम, शायद कोई कस्टमर था। उसे ऊपर बुला रही थी। यही है हमारी ज़िंदगी। आपने हमसे सवाल ही ग़लत पूछा है…"

अब मैं कोने में खड़ी एक दूसरी लड़की से बात करना चाहती थी जो चुपचाप हमारी बातें सुन रही थी। मैं उसकी ओर बढ़ी ही थी कि वो पीछे हट गई और बोली, "बाथरूम खाली हो गया है। मैं नहाने जा रही हूं। शिवरात्रि का व्रत है मेरा।" इतना कहकर वो चली गई।

बातें करते-करते वक़्त काफी हो गया था। मैं भारी मन से अंधेरी सीढ़ियां उतरने लगी, इतनी औरतों में से कोई ऐसी नहीं मिली जिसकी ज़िंदगी में प्यार हो। इन्हीं ख़यालों में डूबी मैं भीड़भाड़ वाली सड़क पर वापस आ गई। पास की किसी दुकान में गाना बज रहा था- बन जा तू मेरी रानी, तैनूं महल दवा दूंगा...
