નાગ પાચમની રોચક કથાઓ
શ્રાવણ માસની શુક્લ પંચમી નાગપંચમી તરીકે ઓળખાય છે. આ દિવસે નાગની પૂજા કરવામાં આવે છે. આ દિવસે નાગ દર્શનનું પણ વિશેષ મહત્વ હોય છે. આ દિવસે સાંપને મારવાની મનાઈ છે. આખા શ્રાવણ મહિનામાં અને ખાસ કરીને નાગપંચમીના દિવસે ધરતીને ખોદવાની મનાઈ છે. આ દિવસે સાંપને દૂધ પીવડાવવામાં આવે છે. કેટલીક જગ્યાએ ખાસ કરીને ગુજરાતમાં શ્રાવણ માસની કૃષ્ણ પંચમીએ પણ નાગપંચમી ઉજવવામાં આવે છે. આ દિવસે પૂજામાં સફેદ ફૂલ મૂકવામાં આવે છે.
આપણા દેશમાં વ્યાપેલી ધાર્મિક આસ્થાના આધાર પર લિંગ, સાંપ, અગ્નિ, સૂર્ય આદિનું ખૂબ મહત્વ છે. નાગપૂજાની પરંપરા પણ આજ સુધી ચાલી રહી છે અને ભારતીય સંસ્કૃતિમાં આનુ વિશેષ મહત્વ છે. આ દિવસે નાગના દર્શનને શુભ માનવામાં આવે છે. એવુ કહેવાય છે કે આપણી ધરતી શેષનાગના ફેણ પર ટકેલી છે અને જ્યારે ધરતી પર પાપ વધી જાય છે ત્યારે શેષનાગ પોતાની ફેણને સમેટી લે છે જેથી ધરતી હલે છે. આ જ વિચાર જન માણસ પર વધુ શ્રધ્ધાવત બનીને નાગની પૂજાને બાધ્ય કરે છે. આપણા દેશમાં દરેક સ્થાન પર કોઈને કોઈ રૂપે શંકર ભગવાનની પૂજા થાય છે, અને એમના ગળામાં, જટાઓમાં અને બાજુઓમાં નાગની માળા સ્પષ્ટ દેખાય છે આથી પણ લોકો નાગની પૂજા કરવામાં વધુ શ્રધ્ધા રાખે છે.
-નાગદેવના નિવાસસ્થાન ની પૂજા કરવી જોઈએ.
-નાગદેવતાને દૂધ પણ પીવડાવવું જોઈએ.
-નાગદેવની સુગંધિત ફૂલ તેમજ ચંદનથી જ પૂજા કરવી જોઈએ, કારણકે નાગદેવ સુગંધ પ્રિય છે.

જુદા જુદા ક્ષેત્રો મુજબ નાગપંચમીની કથાઓ અમે અહીં રજૂ કરી છે. આ કથાઓ સુખ સૌભાગ્ય આપનારી અને બધા દુ:ખ દુર કરનારી છે કોઈપણ કથાને પૂરી શ્રધ્ધાથી કહેવાથી કે સાંભળવાથી જ મનગમતું ફળ મળે છે.
નાગપંચમી કથા - 1
કોઈ એક રાજ્યમાં એક ખેડૂત રહેતો હતો. ખેડૂતને બે છોકરા અને એક છોકરી હતી. એક દિવસે હળ ચલાવતાં સમયે હળથી ત્રણ સાંપના બચ્ચાં કચડાઈને મરી ગયા. નાગણ પહેલાં તો સંતાપ કરતી રહી પછી તેણે પોતાના બાળકોના હત્યારા જોડે બદલો લેવાનું નક્કી કર્યુ. રાત્રિના અંધકારમાં નાગણે ખેડૂત, તેની પત્ની બે બાળકોને કરડી લીધુ. બીજા દિવસે સવારે ખેડૂતની પુત્રીને કરડવાના ઈરાદે નાગણ ફરી ચાલી નીકળી તો ખેડૂત પુત્રીએ તેની સામે દૂધથી ભરેલો વાડકો મુકી દીધો અને હાથ જોડીને ક્ષમા માંગી લીધી. નાગિન પ્રસન્ન થઈ ગઈ અને તેના માતા પિતા અને ભાઈઓને ફરી જીવીત કરી દીધા. તે દિવસે શ્રાવણ શુક્લ પંચમી હતી. ત્યારથી અત્યાર સુધી નાગના ગુસ્સાથી બચવા માટે આ દિવસે નાગની પૂજા કરવામાં આવે છે.
નાગપંચમી કથા -2
કોઈ રાજ્યમાં રાજા-રાણી રહેતા હતા. રાણી ગર્ભવતી હતી. તેણે જંગલી કારેલા ખાવાની ઈચ્છા રજૂ કરી. રાજાને જંગલમાં કારેલા દેખાયા. તેણે તે તોડીને થેલીમાં ભરી લીધી. તેટલામાં નાગદેવતા ત્યાં આવી પહોચ્યાં અને બોલ્યા કે મને પૂછ્યા વગર કેમ તોડી લીધા ? તો રાજાએ હાથ જોડીને કહ્યુ કે મારી પત્ની ગર્ભવતી છે અને તેને આ ખાવી હતી. મને અહીં દેખાયા તો મેં તોડી લીધા. મને ખબર હોત કે આ તમારા છે તો હું જરુર પૂછી લેત. હવે મને ક્ષમા કરો.
નાગદેવતા બોલ્યા - હું તમારી વાતો માં નહી આવુ. આ કારેલાને અહીં મુકી દો અથવા તો તમારી પહેલી સંતાન મને આપી દેજો. રાજા કારેલા ઘરે લઈ આવ્યો અને પોતાની પ્રથમ સંતાન આપવાની વાત પણ કરી આવ્યો. રાણીને તેણે બધી વાત કરી છતાં રાણીએ કારેલા ખાવાની ઈચ્છા ન છોડી.
થોડા સમય પછી એક રાણીએ એક પુત્રી અને પુત્રને જન્મ આપ્યો. નાગને ખબર પડી તો તે પહેલી સંતાન માંગવા લાગ્યો. રાજા કદી કહેતાં મુંડન પછી તો કદી કહેતા કાન છેદયા પછી લઈ જજો. છેવટે રાજાએ કહ્યું કે લગ્ન પછી લઈ જજો. નાગ પહેલા તો રાજાની વાતો માનતો રહ્યો, પણ જ્યારે રાજાએ લગ્ન પછી લઈ જવાની વાત કરી તો નાગે વિચાર કર્યો કે લગ્ન પછી તો કન્યા પર પિતાનો અધિકાર રહેતો નથી. તેથી કોઈ બીજું બહાનું બનાવીને છોકરીને લગ્ન પહેલાં જ લઈ જવી પડશે.
એક દિવસે રાજા પોતાની પુત્રીને તળાવ પર નહાવા માટે લઈ ગયો. તળાવના કિનારે એક સુંદર કમળનું ફુલ હતુ. રાજાની પુત્રી ફૂલ તોડવા આગળ વધી તો કમળનું ફૂલ પણ આગળ વધ્યું ફૂલની સાથે-સાથે છોકરી પણ આગળ વધતી ગઈ. જ્યારે રાજાની પુત્રી ઉંડાણમાં ડૂબી ગઈ ત્યારે નાગે રાજાને કહ્યું કે હુ તમારી છોકરીને લઈ જઉં છું આ સાંભળી રાજા મૂર્છિત થઈ ગયો. જ્યારે તેને હોશ આવ્યો ત્યારે તે માથું પછાડી-પછાડીને મરી ગયો.
રાજાના મૃત્યુના સમાચાર અને પુત્રીને નાગ લઈ ગયો છે તેવી ખબર પડતાં રાણી પણ તેમના વિયોગમાં મરી ગઈ. છોકરો એકલો છે જોઈને સગાં-સંબંધીઓએ રાજપાટ છીનવી લીધું અને તેને ભિખારી બનાવી દીધો.
તે ઘેર-ઘેર ફરીને ભીખ માંગતો, અને પોતાનું દુ:ખ સૌને કહેતો, એક દિવસે જ્યારે તે નાગદેવતાની ઘેર ભીખ માંગવા ગયો તો બહેનને તેનો અવાજ સંભળાયો. તેને અવાજ જાણીતો લાગ્યો. તેણે બહાર આવીને જોયું અને પોતાના ભાઈને ઓળખી લીધો. પ્રેમથી તેને અંદર બોલાવી લીધો. બંને પ્રેમથી ત્યાં રહેવા લાગ્યા.
નાગપંચમી કથા -3
એક રાજાને સાત પુત્ર હતા. બધાના લગ્ન થઈ ગયા હતા. બધાને બાળકો પણ થઈ ગયા હતા. સૌથી નાના પુત્રને કોઈ બાળક હજુ સુધી કોઈ બાળક નહોતું. તેની પત્નીને જેઠાણીઓ વાંઝણ કહીને બોલાવતી.
એક તો સંતાન ન હોવાનું દુ:ખ અને ઉપરથી મહેણાં તેને વધુ દુ:ખી કરવા માંડ્યા. જ્યારે તે દુ:ખી થઈને રડતી તો તેનો પતિ તેને સમજાવતો કે 'સંતાન થવા ન થવા એ તો ભાગ્યનો ખેલ છે તો પછી તુ કેમ દુ:ખી થાય છે ? તે કહેતી - "સાંભળતા નથી બધાં મને વાંઝણ કહીને બોલાવે છે. પતિ બોલ્યો - 'દુનિયા બકે છે તો બકવા દે. હું તો કશું નથી કહેતો ને ? તુ ફક્ત મારા તરફ ધ્યાન આપ. અને દુ:ખને છોડીને ખુશ રહે. પતિની વાત સાંભળી તેને થોડી વાર માટે સાંત્વના મળતી પણ ફરી કોઈને કોઈ મહેણાં મારતું અને તે રડવા બેસી જતી.
આ રીતે એક દિવસે નાગપાંચમ આવી ગઈ. ચોથની રાત્રે તેને એક રાતે સપનામાં પાંચ નાગ દેખાયા. તેમાંથી એક બોલ્યો - અરે દીકરી, કાલે નાગપાંચમ છે, જો તુ અમારી પૂજા કરીશ તો તને પુત્ર રત્નની પ્રાપ્તિ થશે. આ સાંભળી તે ઉઠીને બેસી ગઈ અને પતિને જગાવીને સપના વિશે વાત કરી. પતિએ કહ્યું - કે એમાં શું છે, પાંચ નાગ દેખાયા છે તો પાંચ નાગની આકૃતિ બનાવીને તેમની પૂજા કરી લેજે. નાગ ઠંડુ દૂધ જ પસંદ કરે છે તેથી તેમને કાચા દૂધથી જ પ્રસન્ન કરજે. બીજા દિવસે તેણે તે પ્રમાણે જ કર્યુ અને નાગની પૂજા કરવાથી તેને નવ મહિના પછી સુંદર પુત્ર રત્નની પ્રાપ્તિ થઈ.

પહેલાંના સમયની વાત છે. એક શેઠાણીને સાત પુત્રો હતા. સૌથી નાના પુત્રની પત્ની શ્રેષ્ઠ ચરિત્રની વિદૂષી અને સુશીલ હતી. પરંતુ તેને ભાઈ નહોતો. એક દિવસે મોટી વહુએ ઘર લીંપવા માટે પીળી માટી લાવવા માટે બધી વહુઓને પોતાની સાથે ચાલવાનું કહ્યું. બધી વહુઓ પાવડો અને કોદાળી લઈને માટી ખોદવા લાગી. ત્યાં જ એકદમ એક સાંપ નીકળ્યો જેને મોટી વહું મારવા માંડી. નાની વહુ ઝડપથી તેની પાસે આવીને બોલી - તેને ન મારતાં તે તો નિર્દોષ છે. આથી મોટી વહુ એ તેને ન માર્યો. નાગ પણ બાજુ પર ખસી ગયો. નાની વહુએ સાંપને કહ્યુ કે ' અમે હમાણાં જ પાછા ફરી રહ્યા છે, તમે અહીંથી જશો નહી.' આટલું કહીને તે બધા સાથે ચાલી નીકળી. અને પછી તો તે ઘરના કામકાજમાં સાંપને આપેલું વચન પણ ભૂલી ગઈ.
તેને જ્યારે બીજા દિવસે વાત યાદ આવી તો તે બધાને લઈને ત્યાં પહોંચી. અને સાંપને ત્યાં જ બેસેલો જોઈને બોલી - સાંપ ભાઈ પ્રણામ.સાંપ બોલ્યો ' તે મને ભાઈ કહ્યુ છે તેથી જવા દઉ છુ નહી તો ખોટી વાત કરવા માટે હું તને હમાણાં જ ડંખ મારી દેતો. તે બોલી - ભાઈ મારી ભૂલ થઈ ગઈ, મને માફ કરી દો. ત્યારે સાંપ બોલ્યો - સારું આજથી તુ મારી બહેન છે, અને હુ તારો ભાઈ છુ, તને જે માંગવું હોય તે માંગી લે. તે બોલી ભાઈ મારુ કોઈ નથી, સારું થયુ કે તમે મારા ભાઈ બની ગયા.
થોડાક દિવસો વિત્યા પછી સાંપ માણસનું રૂપ લઈને આવી ગયો અને બોલ્યો કે - મારી બહેનને મોકલી આપો. બધાએ કહ્યું કે ' આનો તો કોઈ ભાઈ નથી. તો તે બોલ્યો - હું તેનો દૂરનો ભાઈ છુ. બાળપણથી જ હું બહાર જતો રહ્યો હતો. તેની વાત પર ભરોસો કરી ઘરના લોકોએ તેને મોકલી આપી. તેણે રસ્તામાં કહ્યુ કે હું તે જ સાંપ છું, એટલે તુ ગભરાઈશ નહી. જ્યાં તને ચાલવામાં મુશ્કેલી પડે ત્યાં મારી પૂંછડી પકડી લેજે. તેઁણે સાંપના કહ્યા પ્રમાણે કર્યુ અને થોડીવારમાં જ તેઓ સાંપના ઘરે પહોંચી ગયા. ત્યાંનું ધન-ઐશ્વર્ય જોઈને તે ચકિત થઈ ગઈ.
એક દિવસે સાંપની માતાએ તેને કહ્યુ - હું એક કામથી બહાર જઈ રહી છું, તુ તારા ભાઈને ઠંડુ દૂધ પીવડાવી દેજે. તેને આ વાતનો ખ્યાલ ન રહ્યો અને તેણે ગરમ દૂધ પીવડાવી દીધુ. જેનાથી સાંપનું મોં બળી ગયું. સાંપની માતાને ગુસ્સો આવ્યો. પણ સાંપે તેમણે ચૂપ રહેવાનું કહ્યુ. પછી તેને બહું બધું સોનુ, ચાંદી, હીરા- ઝવેરાત આપીને સાસરિયે વળાવવામાં આવી.
આટલું ધન જોઈને મોટી વહુંને ઈર્ષા આવી તે બોલી - ભાઈ તો ખૂબ ધનવાન છે, તારે તો બીજુ વધુ ધન લેવું જોઈએ. સાંપે આ સાંભળ્યું તો તેને વધુ ધન લાવી આપ્યું. આ જોઈને તે ફરી બોલી આ કચરો કાઢવાની સાવરણી પણ સોનાની હોવી જોઈએ. ત્યારે સાંપે સાવરણી પણ સોનાની લાવી આપી.
સાંપે નાની વહુને હીરા-મોતીનો અદ્ભૂત હાર આપ્યો હતો. તે હારની પ્રશંસા તે દેશની રાણીએ સાંભળી અને તે રાજાને બોલી - શેઠની નાની વહુનો હાર અહીં આવી જવો જોઈએ. રાજાએ મંત્રીને હુકમ કર્યો કે શેઠની ઘેરથી હાર લાવીને જલદી હાજર થાવ. મંત્રીએ શેઠને કહ્યુ કે મહારાણી નાની વહુનો હાર પહેરશે, તેથી તમે તે હાર લઈને મને આપો. શેઠજીએ ગભરાઈને તે હાર નાની વહુ પાસેથી લઈને આપી દીધો. નાની વહુને આ સારુ ન લાગ્યું. તેને પોતાના ભાઈને યાદ કર્યો અને તે સાંપ તરત જ આવી ગયો. નાની વહુ એ પ્રાર્થના કરી કે - ભાઈ રાણીએ મારો હાર છીનવી લીધો છે, તમે કાંઈ એવું કરો કે જ્યારે રાણી ગળામાં તે હાર પહેરે ત્યારે તે સાંપ બની જાય અને જ્યારે હું પહેરું ત્યારે તે પાછો હીરાનો હાર બની જાય. સાંપે તેવુ જ કર્યુ. જેવો રાણીએ હાર પહેર્યો કે તરતજ તે સાપ બની ગયો. આ જોઈને રાણીએ ચીસ પાડી અને રડવા માંડી.
રાજાએ શેઠાણી પાસે સમાચાર મોકલ્યા કે નાની વહુને તરત જ મોકલો. શેઠજી ગભરાઈ ગયા. કે રાજા ન જાણે શુ કરશે ? તે પોતે નાની વહુને લઈને રાજા સામે હાજર થયા. રાજાએ નાની વહુ ને પૂછ્યું - તે શુ જાદુ કર્યો છે , હું તને દંડ આપીશ. નાની વહુ બોલી - રાજાજી ધૃષ્ટતા માફ કરજો, આ હાર એવો છે કે મારા ગળામાં રહે ત્યાં સુધી હીરા-મોતીનો રહે છે અને બીજાના ગળામાં જાય ત્યારે સાંપ બની જાય છે. આ સાંભળી રાજાએ તેને તે સાંપ બનેલો હાર આપ્યો અને કહ્યુ કે - હમણાં જ પહેરી બતાવ. જેવો નાની વહુએ હારને ગળામાં નાખ્યો કે તરત જ તે સાંપમાંથી પાછો હીરા-મોતીનો હાર બની ગયો.
આ જોઈને રાજા ધણા ખુશ થયા તેમને તે હાર તેને પાછો આપી દીધો, ઉપરાંત ધણી સોનોમહોરો પણ આપી. તે બધુ લઈને નાની વહુ ઘરે આવી. મોટી વહુએ ઈર્ષામાં આવીને નાની વહુના પતિના કાન ભંભેર્યા - આને પૂછો કે આ આટલું ધન ક્યાંથી લાવે છે. પતિએ નાની વહુને કહ્યું - સાચુ બોલ કે તને આ ધન કોણ આપે છે ?નાની વહુએ તરતજ સાંપને યાદ કર્યો. સાંપ તરત જ પ્રગટ થયો અને ગુસ્સામાં બોલ્યો - જે મારી ધર્મ બહેનના ચરિત્ર પર શંકા કરશે તેને હું ખાઈ જઈશ.
નાની વહુનો પતિ ખુશ થઈ ગયો, તેને સાંપ ભાઈનો સત્કાર કર્યો. તે દિવસથી નાગપંચમીનો તહેવાર મનાવવામાં આવે છે અને સ્ત્રીઓ સાંપને પોતાનો ભાઈ માનીને તેની પૂજા કરે છે.
આપણા દેશમાં વ્યાપેલી ધાર્મિક આસ્થાના આધાર પર લિંગ, સાંપ, અગ્નિ, સૂર્ય આદિનું ખૂબ મહત્વ છે. નાગપૂજાની પરંપરા પણ આજ સુધી ચાલી રહી છે અને ભારતીય સંસ્કૃતિમાં આનુ વિશેષ મહત્વ છે. આ દિવસે નાગના દર્શનને શુભ માનવામાં આવે છે. એવુ કહેવાય છે કે આપણી ધરતી શેષનાગના ફેણ પર ટકેલી છે અને જ્યારે ધરતી પર પાપ વધી જાય છે ત્યારે શેષનાગ પોતાની ફેણને સમેટી લે છે જેથી ધરતી હલે છે. આ જ વિચાર જન માણસ પર વધુ શ્રધ્ધાવત બનીને નાગની પૂજાને બાધ્ય કરે છે. આપણા દેશમાં દરેક સ્થાન પર કોઈને કોઈ રૂપે શંકર ભગવાનની પૂજા થાય છે, અને એમના ગળામાં, જટાઓમાં અને બાજુઓમાં નાગની માળા સ્પષ્ટ દેખાય છે આથી પણ લોકો નાગની પૂજા કરવામાં વધુ શ્રધ્ધા રાખે છે.
નાગપંચમીના દિવસે શું કરશો ?
-આ દિવસે નાગદેવનું દર્શન અવશ્ય કરવું જોઈએ. -નાગદેવના નિવાસસ્થાન ની પૂજા કરવી જોઈએ.
-નાગદેવતાને દૂધ પણ પીવડાવવું જોઈએ.
-નાગદેવની સુગંધિત ફૂલ તેમજ ચંદનથી જ પૂજા કરવી જોઈએ, કારણકે નાગદેવ સુગંધ પ્રિય છે.

જુદા જુદા ક્ષેત્રો મુજબ નાગપંચમીની કથાઓ અમે અહીં રજૂ કરી છે. આ કથાઓ સુખ સૌભાગ્ય આપનારી અને બધા દુ:ખ દુર કરનારી છે કોઈપણ કથાને પૂરી શ્રધ્ધાથી કહેવાથી કે સાંભળવાથી જ મનગમતું ફળ મળે છે.
નાગપંચમી કથા - 1
કોઈ એક રાજ્યમાં એક ખેડૂત રહેતો હતો. ખેડૂતને બે છોકરા અને એક છોકરી હતી. એક દિવસે હળ ચલાવતાં સમયે હળથી ત્રણ સાંપના બચ્ચાં કચડાઈને મરી ગયા. નાગણ પહેલાં તો સંતાપ કરતી રહી પછી તેણે પોતાના બાળકોના હત્યારા જોડે બદલો લેવાનું નક્કી કર્યુ. રાત્રિના અંધકારમાં નાગણે ખેડૂત, તેની પત્ની બે બાળકોને કરડી લીધુ. બીજા દિવસે સવારે ખેડૂતની પુત્રીને કરડવાના ઈરાદે નાગણ ફરી ચાલી નીકળી તો ખેડૂત પુત્રીએ તેની સામે દૂધથી ભરેલો વાડકો મુકી દીધો અને હાથ જોડીને ક્ષમા માંગી લીધી. નાગિન પ્રસન્ન થઈ ગઈ અને તેના માતા પિતા અને ભાઈઓને ફરી જીવીત કરી દીધા. તે દિવસે શ્રાવણ શુક્લ પંચમી હતી. ત્યારથી અત્યાર સુધી નાગના ગુસ્સાથી બચવા માટે આ દિવસે નાગની પૂજા કરવામાં આવે છે.
નાગપંચમી કથા -2
કોઈ રાજ્યમાં રાજા-રાણી રહેતા હતા. રાણી ગર્ભવતી હતી. તેણે જંગલી કારેલા ખાવાની ઈચ્છા રજૂ કરી. રાજાને જંગલમાં કારેલા દેખાયા. તેણે તે તોડીને થેલીમાં ભરી લીધી. તેટલામાં નાગદેવતા ત્યાં આવી પહોચ્યાં અને બોલ્યા કે મને પૂછ્યા વગર કેમ તોડી લીધા ? તો રાજાએ હાથ જોડીને કહ્યુ કે મારી પત્ની ગર્ભવતી છે અને તેને આ ખાવી હતી. મને અહીં દેખાયા તો મેં તોડી લીધા. મને ખબર હોત કે આ તમારા છે તો હું જરુર પૂછી લેત. હવે મને ક્ષમા કરો.
નાગદેવતા બોલ્યા - હું તમારી વાતો માં નહી આવુ. આ કારેલાને અહીં મુકી દો અથવા તો તમારી પહેલી સંતાન મને આપી દેજો. રાજા કારેલા ઘરે લઈ આવ્યો અને પોતાની પ્રથમ સંતાન આપવાની વાત પણ કરી આવ્યો. રાણીને તેણે બધી વાત કરી છતાં રાણીએ કારેલા ખાવાની ઈચ્છા ન છોડી.
થોડા સમય પછી એક રાણીએ એક પુત્રી અને પુત્રને જન્મ આપ્યો. નાગને ખબર પડી તો તે પહેલી સંતાન માંગવા લાગ્યો. રાજા કદી કહેતાં મુંડન પછી તો કદી કહેતા કાન છેદયા પછી લઈ જજો. છેવટે રાજાએ કહ્યું કે લગ્ન પછી લઈ જજો. નાગ પહેલા તો રાજાની વાતો માનતો રહ્યો, પણ જ્યારે રાજાએ લગ્ન પછી લઈ જવાની વાત કરી તો નાગે વિચાર કર્યો કે લગ્ન પછી તો કન્યા પર પિતાનો અધિકાર રહેતો નથી. તેથી કોઈ બીજું બહાનું બનાવીને છોકરીને લગ્ન પહેલાં જ લઈ જવી પડશે.
એક દિવસે રાજા પોતાની પુત્રીને તળાવ પર નહાવા માટે લઈ ગયો. તળાવના કિનારે એક સુંદર કમળનું ફુલ હતુ. રાજાની પુત્રી ફૂલ તોડવા આગળ વધી તો કમળનું ફૂલ પણ આગળ વધ્યું ફૂલની સાથે-સાથે છોકરી પણ આગળ વધતી ગઈ. જ્યારે રાજાની પુત્રી ઉંડાણમાં ડૂબી ગઈ ત્યારે નાગે રાજાને કહ્યું કે હુ તમારી છોકરીને લઈ જઉં છું આ સાંભળી રાજા મૂર્છિત થઈ ગયો. જ્યારે તેને હોશ આવ્યો ત્યારે તે માથું પછાડી-પછાડીને મરી ગયો.
રાજાના મૃત્યુના સમાચાર અને પુત્રીને નાગ લઈ ગયો છે તેવી ખબર પડતાં રાણી પણ તેમના વિયોગમાં મરી ગઈ. છોકરો એકલો છે જોઈને સગાં-સંબંધીઓએ રાજપાટ છીનવી લીધું અને તેને ભિખારી બનાવી દીધો.
તે ઘેર-ઘેર ફરીને ભીખ માંગતો, અને પોતાનું દુ:ખ સૌને કહેતો, એક દિવસે જ્યારે તે નાગદેવતાની ઘેર ભીખ માંગવા ગયો તો બહેનને તેનો અવાજ સંભળાયો. તેને અવાજ જાણીતો લાગ્યો. તેણે બહાર આવીને જોયું અને પોતાના ભાઈને ઓળખી લીધો. પ્રેમથી તેને અંદર બોલાવી લીધો. બંને પ્રેમથી ત્યાં રહેવા લાગ્યા.
એક રાજાને સાત પુત્ર હતા. બધાના લગ્ન થઈ ગયા હતા. બધાને બાળકો પણ થઈ ગયા હતા. સૌથી નાના પુત્રને કોઈ બાળક હજુ સુધી કોઈ બાળક નહોતું. તેની પત્નીને જેઠાણીઓ વાંઝણ કહીને બોલાવતી.
એક તો સંતાન ન હોવાનું દુ:ખ અને ઉપરથી મહેણાં તેને વધુ દુ:ખી કરવા માંડ્યા. જ્યારે તે દુ:ખી થઈને રડતી તો તેનો પતિ તેને સમજાવતો કે 'સંતાન થવા ન થવા એ તો ભાગ્યનો ખેલ છે તો પછી તુ કેમ દુ:ખી થાય છે ? તે કહેતી - "સાંભળતા નથી બધાં મને વાંઝણ કહીને બોલાવે છે. પતિ બોલ્યો - 'દુનિયા બકે છે તો બકવા દે. હું તો કશું નથી કહેતો ને ? તુ ફક્ત મારા તરફ ધ્યાન આપ. અને દુ:ખને છોડીને ખુશ રહે. પતિની વાત સાંભળી તેને થોડી વાર માટે સાંત્વના મળતી પણ ફરી કોઈને કોઈ મહેણાં મારતું અને તે રડવા બેસી જતી.
આ રીતે એક દિવસે નાગપાંચમ આવી ગઈ. ચોથની રાત્રે તેને એક રાતે સપનામાં પાંચ નાગ દેખાયા. તેમાંથી એક બોલ્યો - અરે દીકરી, કાલે નાગપાંચમ છે, જો તુ અમારી પૂજા કરીશ તો તને પુત્ર રત્નની પ્રાપ્તિ થશે. આ સાંભળી તે ઉઠીને બેસી ગઈ અને પતિને જગાવીને સપના વિશે વાત કરી. પતિએ કહ્યું - કે એમાં શું છે, પાંચ નાગ દેખાયા છે તો પાંચ નાગની આકૃતિ બનાવીને તેમની પૂજા કરી લેજે. નાગ ઠંડુ દૂધ જ પસંદ કરે છે તેથી તેમને કાચા દૂધથી જ પ્રસન્ન કરજે. બીજા દિવસે તેણે તે પ્રમાણે જ કર્યુ અને નાગની પૂજા કરવાથી તેને નવ મહિના પછી સુંદર પુત્ર રત્નની પ્રાપ્તિ થઈ.

પહેલાંના સમયની વાત છે. એક શેઠાણીને સાત પુત્રો હતા. સૌથી નાના પુત્રની પત્ની શ્રેષ્ઠ ચરિત્રની વિદૂષી અને સુશીલ હતી. પરંતુ તેને ભાઈ નહોતો. એક દિવસે મોટી વહુએ ઘર લીંપવા માટે પીળી માટી લાવવા માટે બધી વહુઓને પોતાની સાથે ચાલવાનું કહ્યું. બધી વહુઓ પાવડો અને કોદાળી લઈને માટી ખોદવા લાગી. ત્યાં જ એકદમ એક સાંપ નીકળ્યો જેને મોટી વહું મારવા માંડી. નાની વહુ ઝડપથી તેની પાસે આવીને બોલી - તેને ન મારતાં તે તો નિર્દોષ છે. આથી મોટી વહુ એ તેને ન માર્યો. નાગ પણ બાજુ પર ખસી ગયો. નાની વહુએ સાંપને કહ્યુ કે ' અમે હમાણાં જ પાછા ફરી રહ્યા છે, તમે અહીંથી જશો નહી.' આટલું કહીને તે બધા સાથે ચાલી નીકળી. અને પછી તો તે ઘરના કામકાજમાં સાંપને આપેલું વચન પણ ભૂલી ગઈ.
તેને જ્યારે બીજા દિવસે વાત યાદ આવી તો તે બધાને લઈને ત્યાં પહોંચી. અને સાંપને ત્યાં જ બેસેલો જોઈને બોલી - સાંપ ભાઈ પ્રણામ.સાંપ બોલ્યો ' તે મને ભાઈ કહ્યુ છે તેથી જવા દઉ છુ નહી તો ખોટી વાત કરવા માટે હું તને હમાણાં જ ડંખ મારી દેતો. તે બોલી - ભાઈ મારી ભૂલ થઈ ગઈ, મને માફ કરી દો. ત્યારે સાંપ બોલ્યો - સારું આજથી તુ મારી બહેન છે, અને હુ તારો ભાઈ છુ, તને જે માંગવું હોય તે માંગી લે. તે બોલી ભાઈ મારુ કોઈ નથી, સારું થયુ કે તમે મારા ભાઈ બની ગયા.
થોડાક દિવસો વિત્યા પછી સાંપ માણસનું રૂપ લઈને આવી ગયો અને બોલ્યો કે - મારી બહેનને મોકલી આપો. બધાએ કહ્યું કે ' આનો તો કોઈ ભાઈ નથી. તો તે બોલ્યો - હું તેનો દૂરનો ભાઈ છુ. બાળપણથી જ હું બહાર જતો રહ્યો હતો. તેની વાત પર ભરોસો કરી ઘરના લોકોએ તેને મોકલી આપી. તેણે રસ્તામાં કહ્યુ કે હું તે જ સાંપ છું, એટલે તુ ગભરાઈશ નહી. જ્યાં તને ચાલવામાં મુશ્કેલી પડે ત્યાં મારી પૂંછડી પકડી લેજે. તેઁણે સાંપના કહ્યા પ્રમાણે કર્યુ અને થોડીવારમાં જ તેઓ સાંપના ઘરે પહોંચી ગયા. ત્યાંનું ધન-ઐશ્વર્ય જોઈને તે ચકિત થઈ ગઈ.
એક દિવસે સાંપની માતાએ તેને કહ્યુ - હું એક કામથી બહાર જઈ રહી છું, તુ તારા ભાઈને ઠંડુ દૂધ પીવડાવી દેજે. તેને આ વાતનો ખ્યાલ ન રહ્યો અને તેણે ગરમ દૂધ પીવડાવી દીધુ. જેનાથી સાંપનું મોં બળી ગયું. સાંપની માતાને ગુસ્સો આવ્યો. પણ સાંપે તેમણે ચૂપ રહેવાનું કહ્યુ. પછી તેને બહું બધું સોનુ, ચાંદી, હીરા- ઝવેરાત આપીને સાસરિયે વળાવવામાં આવી.
આટલું ધન જોઈને મોટી વહુંને ઈર્ષા આવી તે બોલી - ભાઈ તો ખૂબ ધનવાન છે, તારે તો બીજુ વધુ ધન લેવું જોઈએ. સાંપે આ સાંભળ્યું તો તેને વધુ ધન લાવી આપ્યું. આ જોઈને તે ફરી બોલી આ કચરો કાઢવાની સાવરણી પણ સોનાની હોવી જોઈએ. ત્યારે સાંપે સાવરણી પણ સોનાની લાવી આપી.
સાંપે નાની વહુને હીરા-મોતીનો અદ્ભૂત હાર આપ્યો હતો. તે હારની પ્રશંસા તે દેશની રાણીએ સાંભળી અને તે રાજાને બોલી - શેઠની નાની વહુનો હાર અહીં આવી જવો જોઈએ. રાજાએ મંત્રીને હુકમ કર્યો કે શેઠની ઘેરથી હાર લાવીને જલદી હાજર થાવ. મંત્રીએ શેઠને કહ્યુ કે મહારાણી નાની વહુનો હાર પહેરશે, તેથી તમે તે હાર લઈને મને આપો. શેઠજીએ ગભરાઈને તે હાર નાની વહુ પાસેથી લઈને આપી દીધો. નાની વહુને આ સારુ ન લાગ્યું. તેને પોતાના ભાઈને યાદ કર્યો અને તે સાંપ તરત જ આવી ગયો. નાની વહુ એ પ્રાર્થના કરી કે - ભાઈ રાણીએ મારો હાર છીનવી લીધો છે, તમે કાંઈ એવું કરો કે જ્યારે રાણી ગળામાં તે હાર પહેરે ત્યારે તે સાંપ બની જાય અને જ્યારે હું પહેરું ત્યારે તે પાછો હીરાનો હાર બની જાય. સાંપે તેવુ જ કર્યુ. જેવો રાણીએ હાર પહેર્યો કે તરતજ તે સાપ બની ગયો. આ જોઈને રાણીએ ચીસ પાડી અને રડવા માંડી.
રાજાએ શેઠાણી પાસે સમાચાર મોકલ્યા કે નાની વહુને તરત જ મોકલો. શેઠજી ગભરાઈ ગયા. કે રાજા ન જાણે શુ કરશે ? તે પોતે નાની વહુને લઈને રાજા સામે હાજર થયા. રાજાએ નાની વહુ ને પૂછ્યું - તે શુ જાદુ કર્યો છે , હું તને દંડ આપીશ. નાની વહુ બોલી - રાજાજી ધૃષ્ટતા માફ કરજો, આ હાર એવો છે કે મારા ગળામાં રહે ત્યાં સુધી હીરા-મોતીનો રહે છે અને બીજાના ગળામાં જાય ત્યારે સાંપ બની જાય છે. આ સાંભળી રાજાએ તેને તે સાંપ બનેલો હાર આપ્યો અને કહ્યુ કે - હમણાં જ પહેરી બતાવ. જેવો નાની વહુએ હારને ગળામાં નાખ્યો કે તરત જ તે સાંપમાંથી પાછો હીરા-મોતીનો હાર બની ગયો.
