આજે ગુજરાતના ભાવનગરે 296માં વર્ષમાં મંગળ પ્રવેશ કર્યો છે. ભારતની આઝાદી પછી દેશના 562 રજવાડામાંથી કોઈએ પણ દેશના એકીકારણમાં પ્રથમ પોતાનું રાજ્ય સોપ્યું નહીં, ત્યારે પ્રથમ પોતાનું રાજ્ય ભાવનગરના સ્વ. મહારાજા કૃષ્ણકુમારસીહજીએ સોપ્યું અને ગોહિલવાડની દિલદારી દેખાડી હતી. ત્યારે આ ભાવનગરનો આજે 296મો જન્મદિવસ છે. ભાવનગરની સ્થાપના 1723 અને સવંત 1779માં વૈશાખ સુદ અને અખાત્રીજના દિવસે થઈ હતી. ત્યારે ભાવનગરના જન્મદિવસ નિમિત્તે વેબદુનિયા ગુજરાતી શુભકામના પાઠવે છે. ભાવનગરની સ્થાપના પહેલાનો ઇતિહાસ ઘણો જ રસપ્રદ રહ્યો છે.

ભાવનગરની સ્થાપના ભાવસિંહથી રતનસિંહજુ ગોહિલે કરી હતી. ગોહિલો મારવાડના ખેરગઢથી ગુજરાતના સૌરાષ્ટ્રના સુરેન્દ્રનગર જિલ્લામાં આવ્યા અને બાદમાં ઉમરાળા, ઘોઘાના પીરમબેટ અને ફરિ ઉમરાળા આવી સિહોર થઈને વડવા ગામ આવ્યા હતા. અને ભાવનગરની સ્થાપના કરી હતી. ભારતના ગણતંત્રમાં ભળ્યું તે પહેલા સુધી આ એક રજવાડુ હતું.સુર્યવંશી ગોહીલ રાજપુતોને મારવાડમાં તીવ્ર સ્પર્ધાનો સામનો કરવો પડતો હતો. ઇ.સ. 1260માં તેઓએ ગુજરાતની હદમાં સાગરકાંઠા તરફ આવીને સેજકપુર, ઉમરાળા અને સિહોર એમ ત્રણ રાજધાની બનાવી. 1722- 1723માં કંથાજી કડાણી અને પીપળાજી ગાયકવાડની સરદારી નીચે ગોહીલોની તે સમયની રાજધાની પર આક્રમણ કર્યુ. અને હારનો સામનો કરવો પડ્યો એટલે હારનું કારણ સિહોરનું ભૌગોલીક સ્થાન છે એમ માનીને 1723માં સિહોરથી 30 કિલોમિટર દૂર વડવા ગામ પાસે દરીયાકિનારે સંવત 1779ની વૈશાખ સુદ 3-અખાત્રીજના રોજ મહારાજા ભાવસિંહજી ગોહીલે નવી રાજધાની વસાવી અને એને ભાવનગર તરીકે ઓળખાવ્યું. દરિયાઇ વ્યાપારની સાનુકુળતા અને વ્યૂહાત્મક અગત્યતાને ધ્યાનમાં રાખીને આ સ્થળ પસંદ કરવામાં આવ્યુ હતું. સ્વાભાવિક રીતે જ ભાવનગર શહેર ભાવનગર રજવાડાની રાજધાની બન્યું. જૂના ભાવનગરની નગર રચના સૌરાષ્ટ્રના બીજા અગત્યના શહેરો તરફ ખૂલતા દરવાજાવાળા કિલ્લા ધરાવતી હતી. બે દાયકા સુધી એ આફ્રિકા, ઝાંજીબાર, મોઝામ્બિક, સિંગાપુર અને આરબ દેશો સાથે વ્યાપારી સંબંધ ધરાવતું અગત્યનું બંદર બની રહ્યુ.હાલમાં રાજવી કુટુંબના સભ્યોમાં મહારાજા વિજયરાજસિંહ ગોહિલ, મહારાણી સંયુક્તાકુમારી, યુવરાજ જયવીરરાજસિંહ ગોહિલ અને રાજકુમારી બ્રિજેશ્વરીકુમારી છે. ભાવનગરનો મહેલ નિલમબાગ ખાતે આવેલો છે. દેશી રાજ્યોના વિલીનીકરણ સમયે સરદાર વલ્લભભાઈ પટેલ સાથે સૌ પ્રથમ સહમત થનાર અને પોતાનું રાજ્ય ધરનારા ભાવનગરના મહારાજા કૃષ્ણકુમારસિંહજી હતા. ભાવનગર પાસે આવેલું અલંગ વિશ્વનું સૌથી મોટું શિપબ્રેકીંગ યાર્ડ છે
