પૌરાણિક કથા મુજબ લોકો પ્રહલાદ નામના એ વિષ્ણુ ભક્તની યાદમાં હોલિકોત્સવ ઉજવે છે જેને આગ સળગાવી શકતી નથી પણ આદિવાસી બહુલ બસ્તર સંભાગના દંતેવાડામાં એવી રાજકુમારીની યાદમાં હોળી રમાય છે જેને પોતાની અસ્મિતા માટે આગની લપેટમાં કુદીને જૌહર કરી લીધુ હતુ. અહી હોળી બસ્તરમાં સળગનારી પ્રથમ હોળી માનવામાં આવે છે. અહી લોકો રંગ ગુલાલથી નહી પણ માટીથી હોળી રમે છે.
રાજકુમારીના નામ પર સતીશિલા
દંતેશ્વરી મંદિરના પુજારી હરિહર નાથ જણાવે છે કે રાજકુમારીનુ નામ તો કોઈને ખબર નથી પણ દક્ષિણ બસ્તરમાં લોક કથા પ્રચલિત છે કે હજારો વર્ષ પહેલા બસ્તરની એક રાજકુમારીને કોઈ આક્રમણકારીએ અપહરણ કરવાની કોશિશ કરી હતી. આ વાતની માહિતી મળતા જ રાજકુમારીએ મંદિરની સામે આગ પ્રજ્વલ્લિત કરાવી અને માં દંતેશ્વરીનો જયકારો લગાવતા સમાય ગઈ.
આ ઘટનાને ચિર સ્થાયી બનાવવા માટે તત્કાલીન રાજાઓએ રાજકુમારીની યાદમાં એક પ્રતિમા સ્થાપિત કરાવી જેને લોકો સતીશિલા કહે છે. પુરાતત્વ વિભાગના મુજબ દંતેવાડાના હોલીભાઠામાં સ્થાપિત પ્રતિમા બારમી શતાબ્દીની છે. આ પ્રતિમા સાથે એક પુરૂષની પણ પ્રતિમા છે. લોક માન્યતા છે કે આ એ રાજકુમારની મૂર્તિ છે જેની સાથે રાજકુમારીના લગ્ન થવાના હતા.
ગુપ્ત હોય છે પૂજા
દંતેવાડામાં દર વર્ષે ફાગણ મંડઈના નવમા દિવસે રાત્રે હોળી દહન માટે સજાવેલ લાકડીઓની વચ્ચે દંતેશ્વરી મંદિરના પુજારી રાજકુમારીના પ્રતીકના રૂપમાં કેળાનો છોડ રોપીને ગુપ્ત પૂજા કરે છે. હોળીમાં આગ પ્રજવલ્લિત કરતા પહેલા સાત પરિક્રમા કરવામાં આવે છે. રાજકુમારીની યાદમાં હોળી પ્રગટાવવા માટે તાડ, પલાશ, સાલ, બેર, ચંદન, બાંસ અને કનિયારી નામની સાત પ્રકારના ઝાડની લાકડીઓનો ઉપયોગ કરવામાં આવે છે. તેમા તાડના પાનનુ વિશેષ મહત્વ છે. હોલિકા દહનથી આઠ દિવસ પહેલા તાડના પાનને દંતેશ્વરી તળાવમાં ઘોઈને મંદિર પ્રાંગણમાં ભૈરવ મંદિરમાં મુકવામાં આવે છે. આ રિવાજને તાડ પલંગા ધોની કહેવામાં આવે છે.

માટીથી રમે છે હોળી
સામાન્ય રીતે લોકો રંગ-ગુલાલથી હોળી રમે છે પણ દંતેવાડા ક્ષેત્રના ગ્રામીણ રાજકુમારીની યાદમાં પ્રગટાવેલ હોળીની રાખ અને દંતેશ્વરી મંદિરની માટીથી રંગોત્સવ ઉજવતા માટીની અસ્મિતા માટે જોહર કરનારી રાજકુમારીની યાદ કરે છે. બીજી બાજુ એક વ્યક્તિને ફૂલોથી સજાવી હોલીભાંઠા પહોંચાડવામાં આવે છે. તેને લાલા કહે છે. બીજી બાજુ રાજકુમારીના અપહરણની યોજના બનાવનારા આક્રમણકારીને યાદ કરી પરંપરામુજબ ગાળો આપવામાં આવે છે.
