દિવાળીના એક દિવસ પહેલા મતલબ કાર્તિક કૃષ્ણ ચતુર્દશી તિથિના રોજ નાની દિવાળીના નામથી ઓળખાય છે. આ તિથિને શાસ્ત્રોમાં નરક ચતુર્દશી બતાવાઈ છે. આ દિવસે સવારે સ્નાન કરીને યમ તર્પણ અને સાંજના સમયે દીપ દાનનું ખૂબ મહત્વ છે. એવુ કહેવાય છે કે આનાથી મૃત્યુ પછી યમનો ભય નથી રહેતો.
પુરાણોમાં નરક ચતુર્દશીને લઈને કે ખૂબ જ રોચક કથા છે. નરકાસુર નામના એક અસુરે 16 હજાર કન્યાઓને બંદી બનાવીને રાખી હતી. ભગવાન શ્રી કૃષ્ણએ નરકાસુરનો વધ કરીને આ કન્યાઓને બંધનમાંથી મુક્ત બનાવી.

નરકાસુરના બંદીગૃહમાંથી મુક્ત થય પછી આ કન્યાઓએ શ્રી કૃષ્ણને કહ્યુ કે સમાજ તેમનો સ્વીકાર નહી કરે. તેથી તમે જ કોઈ ઉપાય કરો જેનાથી સમાજમાં અમારુ સન્માન કાયમ રહે. સમાજમાં આ કન્યાઓને સન્માન અપાવવા માટે સત્યાભામાની મદદથી શ્રી કૃષ્ણએ બધી કન્યાઓ સાથે લગ્ન કરી લીધા.
નરકાસુરનો વધ અને 16 હજાર કન્યાઓને બંધનમાંથી મુક્ત થવાના ઉપલક્ષ્યમાં નરક ચતુર્દશીના દિવસે દિપદાનની પરંપરા શરૂ થઈ.
