દેવ દિવાળીનું મહાત્મ્ય અને તેની કથા
દેવ-દિવાળી તહેવારોનો રાજા છે. હિંદુ ધર્મની માન્યતા પ્રમાણે કાળીચૌદશના દિવસે શ્રીકૃષ્ણે નરકાસુર નામના રાક્ષસનો વધ કરી પ્રજાને તેના ત્રાસમાંથી છોડાવેલી તેની સ્મૃતિમાં દીપમાળાઓ પ્રગટાવીને દિવાળીનો તહેવાર ઉજવાય છે. ભગવાન મહાવીર દિવાળીના દિવસે નિર્વાણ પામ્યા હતા, તેથી જૈનધર્મીઓ માટે પણ દિવાળીનો તહેવાર ખૂબજ આધ્યાત્મિક મહત્વ ધરાવે છે.
ભારતભરના તમામ ધર્મોના લોકો આ તહેવાર ભારે ઉત્સાહથી અને ઉલ્લાસથી ઉજવે છે. કારતક સુદ પૂનમના રોજ ઉજવવામાં આવતી ‘દેવદિવાળી’ ના સંદર્ભમાં એક પૌરાણિક કથા પણ સંકળાયેલી અને પ્રચલિત છે.
દેવ-દિવાળીની પૌરાણિક કથા -
ત્રિપુર નામનો મહાદૈત્ય પ્રયાગક્ષેત્રમાં તપ કરતો હતો. તેણે ઉગ્ર તપશ્ચર્યા કરી. એના તપના તેજ અને પ્રભાવથી ત્રિભુવન પણ બળવા માંડયા એને સંમોહિત કરવા દેવોએ અનેક અપ્સરાઓ મોકલી અને વિવિધ ઉપાયો કર્યા, પરંતુ તપસ્વી દૈત્ય ચલિત થયો નહીં અને કામ, ક્રોધ કે લોભને પણ વશ થયો નહીં, અને તેણે બ્રહ્માજીને પ્રસન્ન કરી અમરત્વ માગ્યું. ત્યારે બ્રહ્માજી બોલ્યા, ‘હે વત્સ! મારું પણ મરણ થાય છે તો પછી અન્યની તો શી વાત કરવી? શરિર ધારીઓ માટે મરણ અનિવાર્ય છે એટલે મારી પાસેથી અન્ય વરદાન માગી લે.’
ત્રિપુર બોલ્યો: ‘હે પિતામહ! દેવથી, મનુષ્યથી, રાક્ષસથી, સ્ત્રીઓથી કે રોગથી મારું મૃત્યુ થાય નહીં એવું મને શ્રેષ્ઠ વરદાન આપો.’
‘તથાસ્તુ’ કહીને બ્રહ્મદેવ સત્યલોકમાં ગયા. ત્રિપુરાસુરને વરદાન પ્રાપ્ત થયું છે એ સમાચાર સાંભળી, અનેક દૈત્યો એની પાસે આવ્યા. ત્રિપુરાસુરે દૈત્યોને આદેશ આપ્યો કે, ‘આપણા વિરોધી દેવોને હણી નાખો. એમ ન થાય તો એમની પાસેની સર્વોત્તમ વસ્તુઓ છીનવી લો અને મને સમર્પિત કરો.’ દૈત્યરાજ ત્રિપુરની આજ્ઞા થતાં, સર્વ દૈત્યોએ સર્વ દેવોને, સર્પોને અને યક્ષોને બંદીવાન બનાવી ચોતરફ હાહાકાર મચાવી દીધો.
વિશેષમાં ત્રિપુરનાં વચનોને અનુસરતા વિશ્વકર્માએ ત્રિપુરની રચના કરી. જે તેજ ગતિથી ઉડનારાં ધાતુનાં વિમાન જેવાં ત્રણ પુર હતાં. ત્રિપુરાસુર એક પુરથી પાતાળમાં, એક પુરથી સ્વર્ગમાં અને એક પુરથી પૃથ્વી પર ઇરછાનુસાર વિચરતો અને વિનાશ સર્જતો. દેવો ત્રસ્ત અને લાચાર બન્યા. આગળની કથા અનુસાર ઇન્દ્ર, બ્રહ્મા અને વિષ્ણુ તેમજ નારદમુનિનું મિલન થયું સૌએ શિવજીને મળી ત્રિપુરાસુરના સંહાર માટે તેમનું શરણ સ્વીકાર્યું. દેવર્ષિ નારદજીની માયાથી પ્રેરિત ત્રિપુરાસુરે કૈલાસ પર આક્રમણ કર્યું. ત્રણ દિવસ સુધી સર્વ એકત્રિત દેવો સાથે ત્રિપુરાસુરે મહાયુદ્ધ કર્યુ અને કાર્તિક માસની શુકલ પક્ષની પૂર્ણિમાને દિવસે ભગવાન શિવજીએ એક જ બાણથી ત્રિપુરાસુરને મારી નાખ્યો, એટલે સર્વ દેવો પ્રસન્ન થયા હર્ષોલ્લાસથી તેઓએ સદાશિવને પ્રસન્ન કરવા દીપ સમર્પિત કર્યા અને દિવાળી જેવો ઉત્સવ પણ ઉજવ્યો. આથી આ દિવસને ‘દેવદિવાળી’ તરીકે ઓળખવામાં આવે છે.
કાર્તિક પૂર્ણિમા, ‘દેવદિવાળી’ ના દિવસે જે કોઇ વ્યકિત પરમાત્માનું સ્મરણ કરી સાતસોવીસ દીવા કરે એ સર્વ પાપોમાંથી મુકત થાય છે. આ દીપ પ્રાગટય અને તેનાં દર્શન થકી તેને સુખ-શાંતિ, સમૃદ્ધિ અને અભ્યુદય તથા ઐશ્વર્યની પ્રાપ્તિ અવશ્ય થાય છે એવું પૌરાણિક ગ્રંથમાં કહેવાયું છે. ‘દેવદિવાળી’ની સમાપ્તિ સાથે જ દીપાવલીનો મહોત્સવ પૂર્ણવિરામ પામે છે અને તે સાથે જ શરૂ થાય છે... ‘શુભ લગ્નોની સિઝન’એટલે કે ‘લગ્નોત્સવ’ લગ્નોત્સુક યુવક-યુવતીઓના પરિવારોમાં શુભ મુહૂર્ત-દિને તોરણો બંધાય છે, મંગળગીતો ગવાય છે, ઢોલ ઢબૂકે છે અને વરકન્યા પ્રભુતામાં પદાર્પણ કરે છે. લગ્ન મુહૂર્તોનો વિચાર કરીએ તો તેમાં દરેક વાર લઇ શકાય છે. તિથિઓમાં શુકલપક્ષની એકમ, કૃષ્ણપક્ષની તેરસ, ચૌદસ, અમાસ અને ક્ષય તેમજ વૃદ્ધિતિથિનો ત્યાગ કરી બાકીની લઇ શકાય છે. અશ્વિની, રોહિણી, મૃગશીર્ષ, મધા, ઉ.ફા, હસ્ત, ચિત્રા, સ્વાતિ, અનુરાધા, મૂળ, ઉ.ષા. શ્રવણ, ધનિષ્ઠા, ઉ.ભા.અને રેવતી એ પંદર નક્ષત્રો લગ્ન માટે સામાન્ય રીતે લેવામાં આવે છે. વિશેષમાં, જે નક્ષત્રોમાં શનિ, રાહુ અથવા કેતુ હોય એ નક્ષત્રો તેમજ જે નક્ષત્રોના છ માસ દરમિયાન ગ્રહણ થયેલું હોય તે પણ ત્યાજય ગણાય છે.
દિવાળી એ સ્વરછતા, પ્રકાશ, આનંદ અને ઉત્સાહનું મહાપર્વ છે, અને તેના અંતિમ ચરણમાં ‘દેવદિવાળી’ એ જાણે આ મહાપર્વના સમાપન રૂપે ઉજવાય છે!

ભારતભરના તમામ ધર્મોના લોકો આ તહેવાર ભારે ઉત્સાહથી અને ઉલ્લાસથી ઉજવે છે. કારતક સુદ પૂનમના રોજ ઉજવવામાં આવતી ‘દેવદિવાળી’ ના સંદર્ભમાં એક પૌરાણિક કથા પણ સંકળાયેલી અને પ્રચલિત છે.
દેવ-દિવાળીની પૌરાણિક કથા -
ત્રિપુર નામનો મહાદૈત્ય પ્રયાગક્ષેત્રમાં તપ કરતો હતો. તેણે ઉગ્ર તપશ્ચર્યા કરી. એના તપના તેજ અને પ્રભાવથી ત્રિભુવન પણ બળવા માંડયા એને સંમોહિત કરવા દેવોએ અનેક અપ્સરાઓ મોકલી અને વિવિધ ઉપાયો કર્યા, પરંતુ તપસ્વી દૈત્ય ચલિત થયો નહીં અને કામ, ક્રોધ કે લોભને પણ વશ થયો નહીં, અને તેણે બ્રહ્માજીને પ્રસન્ન કરી અમરત્વ માગ્યું. ત્યારે બ્રહ્માજી બોલ્યા, ‘હે વત્સ! મારું પણ મરણ થાય છે તો પછી અન્યની તો શી વાત કરવી? શરિર ધારીઓ માટે મરણ અનિવાર્ય છે એટલે મારી પાસેથી અન્ય વરદાન માગી લે.’
‘તથાસ્તુ’ કહીને બ્રહ્મદેવ સત્યલોકમાં ગયા. ત્રિપુરાસુરને વરદાન પ્રાપ્ત થયું છે એ સમાચાર સાંભળી, અનેક દૈત્યો એની પાસે આવ્યા. ત્રિપુરાસુરે દૈત્યોને આદેશ આપ્યો કે, ‘આપણા વિરોધી દેવોને હણી નાખો. એમ ન થાય તો એમની પાસેની સર્વોત્તમ વસ્તુઓ છીનવી લો અને મને સમર્પિત કરો.’ દૈત્યરાજ ત્રિપુરની આજ્ઞા થતાં, સર્વ દૈત્યોએ સર્વ દેવોને, સર્પોને અને યક્ષોને બંદીવાન બનાવી ચોતરફ હાહાકાર મચાવી દીધો.
વિશેષમાં ત્રિપુરનાં વચનોને અનુસરતા વિશ્વકર્માએ ત્રિપુરની રચના કરી. જે તેજ ગતિથી ઉડનારાં ધાતુનાં વિમાન જેવાં ત્રણ પુર હતાં. ત્રિપુરાસુર એક પુરથી પાતાળમાં, એક પુરથી સ્વર્ગમાં અને એક પુરથી પૃથ્વી પર ઇરછાનુસાર વિચરતો અને વિનાશ સર્જતો. દેવો ત્રસ્ત અને લાચાર બન્યા. આગળની કથા અનુસાર ઇન્દ્ર, બ્રહ્મા અને વિષ્ણુ તેમજ નારદમુનિનું મિલન થયું સૌએ શિવજીને મળી ત્રિપુરાસુરના સંહાર માટે તેમનું શરણ સ્વીકાર્યું. દેવર્ષિ નારદજીની માયાથી પ્રેરિત ત્રિપુરાસુરે કૈલાસ પર આક્રમણ કર્યું. ત્રણ દિવસ સુધી સર્વ એકત્રિત દેવો સાથે ત્રિપુરાસુરે મહાયુદ્ધ કર્યુ અને કાર્તિક માસની શુકલ પક્ષની પૂર્ણિમાને દિવસે ભગવાન શિવજીએ એક જ બાણથી ત્રિપુરાસુરને મારી નાખ્યો, એટલે સર્વ દેવો પ્રસન્ન થયા હર્ષોલ્લાસથી તેઓએ સદાશિવને પ્રસન્ન કરવા દીપ સમર્પિત કર્યા અને દિવાળી જેવો ઉત્સવ પણ ઉજવ્યો. આથી આ દિવસને ‘દેવદિવાળી’ તરીકે ઓળખવામાં આવે છે.
કાર્તિક પૂર્ણિમા, ‘દેવદિવાળી’ ના દિવસે જે કોઇ વ્યકિત પરમાત્માનું સ્મરણ કરી સાતસોવીસ દીવા કરે એ સર્વ પાપોમાંથી મુકત થાય છે. આ દીપ પ્રાગટય અને તેનાં દર્શન થકી તેને સુખ-શાંતિ, સમૃદ્ધિ અને અભ્યુદય તથા ઐશ્વર્યની પ્રાપ્તિ અવશ્ય થાય છે એવું પૌરાણિક ગ્રંથમાં કહેવાયું છે. ‘દેવદિવાળી’ની સમાપ્તિ સાથે જ દીપાવલીનો મહોત્સવ પૂર્ણવિરામ પામે છે અને તે સાથે જ શરૂ થાય છે... ‘શુભ લગ્નોની સિઝન’એટલે કે ‘લગ્નોત્સવ’ લગ્નોત્સુક યુવક-યુવતીઓના પરિવારોમાં શુભ મુહૂર્ત-દિને તોરણો બંધાય છે, મંગળગીતો ગવાય છે, ઢોલ ઢબૂકે છે અને વરકન્યા પ્રભુતામાં પદાર્પણ કરે છે. લગ્ન મુહૂર્તોનો વિચાર કરીએ તો તેમાં દરેક વાર લઇ શકાય છે. તિથિઓમાં શુકલપક્ષની એકમ, કૃષ્ણપક્ષની તેરસ, ચૌદસ, અમાસ અને ક્ષય તેમજ વૃદ્ધિતિથિનો ત્યાગ કરી બાકીની લઇ શકાય છે. અશ્વિની, રોહિણી, મૃગશીર્ષ, મધા, ઉ.ફા, હસ્ત, ચિત્રા, સ્વાતિ, અનુરાધા, મૂળ, ઉ.ષા. શ્રવણ, ધનિષ્ઠા, ઉ.ભા.અને રેવતી એ પંદર નક્ષત્રો લગ્ન માટે સામાન્ય રીતે લેવામાં આવે છે. વિશેષમાં, જે નક્ષત્રોમાં શનિ, રાહુ અથવા કેતુ હોય એ નક્ષત્રો તેમજ જે નક્ષત્રોના છ માસ દરમિયાન ગ્રહણ થયેલું હોય તે પણ ત્યાજય ગણાય છે.
દિવાળી એ સ્વરછતા, પ્રકાશ, આનંદ અને ઉત્સાહનું મહાપર્વ છે, અને તેના અંતિમ ચરણમાં ‘દેવદિવાળી’ એ જાણે આ મહાપર્વના સમાપન રૂપે ઉજવાય છે!
