મહાત્મા ગાંધીને બ્રિટિશ શાસનના વિરોધે ભારતીય રાષ્ટ્રીય આંદોલનનો નેતા અને રાષ્ટ્ર્પિતા ગણયું છે. એમનો પૂરો નામ મોહનદાસ કરમચંદ ગાંધી હતો. મહાત્મા ગાંધી નો જન્મ 2 ઓકટોબર 1869ને ગુજરાતના પોરબંદર નામના સ્થાને થયું હતું . એમના પિતાનો નામ કરમચંદ ગાંધી હતો. મોહનદાસની માતાનો નામ પુતલીબાઈ હતું જે કરમચંદ ગાંધીની ચોથી પત્ની હતી. મોહનદાસ પોતાના પિતાની ચોથી પત્નીની આખરે સંતાન હતી.
ગાંધીજીનો પરિવાર
ગાંધીની માં પુતલીબાઈ વધારે ધાર્મિક હતી. તેમની દિનચર્યા ઘર અને મંદિરમાં વહેંચલી હતી.તે નિયમિત રૂપથી ઉપવાસ રાખતી હતી અને પરિવારમાં કોઈ પણ બીમાર થતા પર તેમની ઘણી સેવા કરતી હતી. મોહનદાસનો પાલન વૈષ્ણવ મતમાં રમેલા પરિવારમાં થયું અને તેના પર કઠિન નીતિઓ વાળા જૈન ધર્મના ઉંડો અસર થયું.

જેના મુખ્ય સિદ્ધાંત અહિંસા અને વિશ્વની બધી વસ્તુઓને શાસ્વત માનવો છે. આ પ્રકારે તેમને સ્વાભાવિક રૂપથી અહિંસા ,શાકાહાર ,આત્મશુદ્ધિ માટે ઉપવાસ અને વિભિન્ન પંથોને માનતા વાળા વચ્ચે પરસ્પર સહિષુણતાને અપનાવ્યું.
ગાંધીજીને સત્ય ખૂબ પસંદ હતુ અને તેમને પોતાના જીવનમાં આનો પ્રયોગ પણ કર્યો. એટલુ જ નહી ગાંધીજી તેમને પોતાની આત્મકથામાં આ તમામ સત્યના પ્રયોગો વિશે જ્ણાવ્યુ છે. આજે તેમની 150મી જન્મજયંતિ પર અમે અહી તેમના તમામ પ્રસંગો તો નહી પણ તેમના જીવનના મહત્વપૂર્ણ પ્રયોગોને એટલે કે તેમની આત્મકથાના 2 મુખ્ય પ્રસંગોને અહી રજુ કરી રહ્યા છે.
સત્યના પ્રયોગો કે સત્યના પ્રયોગો અથવા આત્મકથા પુસ્તક ગાંધીજીએ પોતાના જીવનમાં કરેલા પ્રયોગો અને મેળવેલા અનુભવો વિશે લખેલી કથા છે. જેમાં તેમના બાળપણથી લઈને ૧૯૨૦ સુધીની એમની જિંદગીને પ્રયોગો સ્વરૂપે વર્ણવી લીધી છે. નવજીવન પ્રકાશન મંદિર, અમદાવાદ દ્વારા સૌ પ્રથમ ૧૯૨૭માં આ પુસ્તક પ્રકાશિત કરવામાં આવ્યું હતું. કેમકે ગાંધીજીએ પોતે પોતાના જીવનના પ્રસંગો વર્ણવ્યા છે, આ એક સામાન્ય પુસ્તક ન રહેતા તેમની આત્મકથા બની છે
ગાંધીજીએ એમની આત્મકથાનું નામ ‘સત્યના પ્રયોગો અથવા આત્મકથા’ એવું આપ્યું છે. ગાંધીજીએ જીવનભર સત્યના પ્રયોગો કર્યા અને સત્યના પ્રયોગો એમની આત્મકથા બની રહ્યા. જીવનમાં હંમેશાં સત્ય જ બોલવું, સત્યનું જ આચરણ કરવું એવો દુરાગ્રહ મેં રાખ્યો નથી. મારા જેવા સરેરાશ ભારતીય નાગરિકને એવો દુરાગ્રહ રાખવાનું પરવડે પણ નહીં. પરંતુ ક્યારેક મારામાં ગાંધીજી પ્રવેશી જાય છે ને હું એકદમ સત્યના પ્રયોગો કરવા માટે ઉશ્કેરાઈ જાઉં છું. મારા આવા સત્યના પ્રયોગો મારી આત્મકથા નહીં, મારી આત્મવ્યથા બની રહ્યા છે. આત્મવ્યથાનો આવો એક કિસ્સો આજે રજૂ કરું છું.
પ્રસંગ - 1 ટ્રેનની મુસાફરી
એક વાર રાતની ટ્રેનમાં મારે મારા વતન સાવરકુંડલા જવાનું હતું. મારે ત્યાં આવેલા બે મહેમાનો પણ મારી સાથે આવવાના હતા, આમાંના એક સ્નેહી રિઝર્વેશન કરાવવા સ્ટેશને ગયા. રિઝર્વેશનના ફોર્મમાં નામ, જાતિ અને ઉંમર દર્શાવવાનાં હોય છે. મારા નામ કે મારી જાતિ અંગે મૂંઝવણ અનુભવવાનું સ્નેહી માટે કશું કારણ નહોતું, પરંતુ મારી ઉંમર અંગે એમને ખરે જ મૂંઝવણ થઈ. રિઝર્વેશન કરાવવા માટે એ નીકળ્યા ત્યારે હું એમને મારી ઉંમર કહેતાં ભૂલી ગયો અને એ પૂછતાં ભૂલી ગયા. અનુમાનને આધારે એમને મારી ઉંમર લખવાની થઈ. એ ખરે જ મૂંઝાયા. રિક્ષામાં ઘેર પૂછવા આવે તો એક રિઝર્વેશન જેટલો ખર્ચ વધુ થાય ને બસમાં આવે તો રિઝર્વેશનની બારી બંધ થઈ જાય. પ્રોફેસર ન હોવા છતાં એમને ટેલિફોન કરવાનું સૂઝ્યું નહીં. અનુમાનને આધારે એમણે મારી ઉંમર લખવાનો નિર્ણય કર્યો. હું નાનો હતો ત્યારથી મોટો દેખાઉં છું ને મોટો થયા પછી વધુ મોટો દેખાઉં છું. મારા આ દેખાવે એમને ગેરમાર્ગે દોર્યા. વળી કમરનો દુખાવો, ઢીંચણનો દુખાવો, હાર્ટની તકલીફ, જતા રહેલા માથાના વાળ – આ બધા સાંયોગિક પુરાવાઓની એમણે મદદ લીધી. મારી ઉંમરમાં એમણે દસકો ઉમેરી દીધો. સાઠને બદલે એમણે મારી ઉંમર સિત્તેર વર્ષ દર્શાવી. હું સ્ત્રી નથી એટલે મારી ઉંમર છે એના કરતાં કોઈ વધુ કહે કે માને એ સામે હું ક્યારેય વાંધો નથી લેતો. પણ આ ભૂલને કારણે કેવી આફતનો સામનો કરવાનો આવવાનો છે એની એમને કે આ આફત ઊભી થઈ ત્યાં સુધી મને સહેજે કલ્પના નહોતી.
રાત્રે ટ્રેન આવી ત્યારે ડબાનો નંબર જોવા મેં ટિકિટ જોઈ અને હું ચમક્યો. મારા સીટ નંબર સામે 70 વર્ષ દર્શાવેલાં હતાં. સિનિયર સિટીઝન તરીકે કન્સેશનનો લાભ આપવામાં આવ્યો હતો. મેં સ્નેહીનું ધ્યાન દોર્યું. સ્નેહીએ કહ્યું, ‘ખોટું કન્સેશન લેવાનો આપણો ઈરાદો નહોતો, પરંતુ ભગવાન તમને કન્સેશનનો લાભ અપાવવા ઈચ્છતા હશે એટલે એમણે મારી પાસે ભૂલ કરાવી. હવે ભગવાનની ઈચ્છાને માન આપો. કન્ડકટરને કશો વહેમ જશે નહીં. એ તમને સહેલાઈથી સિત્તેરના માની લેશે.’
હું શુદ્ધ-અણિશુદ્ધ-પરિશુદ્ધ પ્રામાણિક છું એવો દાવો મારાથી થઈ શકે તેમ નથી પણ ક્યારેક ક્યારેક અકાળે અસ્થાને મને ગાંધી-ઍટેક આવી જાય છે. આજે પણ એવું જ થયું. લગભગ ટ્રેન ઊપડવાના સમયે કંડકટર આવ્યા. ટિકિટ એમના હાથમાં આપતાં પહેલાં મેં એમને કહ્યું : ‘સાહેબ, આ ટિકિટ લેવામાં ભૂલ થઈ છે. મારી ઉંમર સાઠને બદલે સિત્તેર લખાવી છે. પરિણામે મને કન્સેશનનો ખોટો લાભ મળ્યો છે. આપ એટલી રકમ મારી પાસેથી લઈ લો.’ કંડકટર દિગ્મૂઢ બનીને મારી સામે જોઈ રહ્યા. પાગલખાનામાંથી છૂટીને સીધો આ ટ્રેનમાં બેઠો હોઉં એવી શંકા એમને પડી હોય એવું લાગ્યું. એમણે કહ્યું : ‘તમે સાચું બોલ્યા એટલે દંડ તો નહીં કરું, પણ આ ટિકિટ હવે નકામી કહેવાય. રેલવેના કાયદા પ્રમાણે તમે અત્યારે ટિકિટ વગરના કહેવાવ. એટલે તમે જઈને નવી ટિકિટ લઈ આવો. હું તમને નવું રિઝર્વેશન આપું.’ હવે દિગ્મૂઢ થવાનો વારો મારો હતો. ટિકિટ મારા હાથમાં હતી અને છતાં રેલવેના કાયદા પ્રમાણે હું ટિકિટ વગરનો હતો ! ખરેખર તો હું બુદ્ધિ વગરનો હતો એવું મને લાગવા માંડ્યું, એટલામાં બાજુવાળા એક પેસેન્જરે કહ્યું, ‘સાહેબ ! આવી બધી બબાલ કરવા કરતાં પચાસ રૂપિયા લઈને જવા દો ને !’ આ સાંભળી કંડકટર બોલ્યા, ‘આ વાત જો આમણે કરી હોત તો મેં દંડ ફટકાર્યો જ હોત. આટલી નોકરીમાં મેં ક્યારેય હરામની પાઈ લીધી નથી.’ સરકારી ખાતામાં ખાતા ન હોય એવાં માણસો એવી સાંકડી લઘુમતીમાં છે કે આવો કોઈ માણસ મળે ત્યારે આપણને સાશ્ચર્યાનંદ થાય છે.
એક વાર ‘નો પાર્કિંગ’ના બોર્ડના થાંભલાને અડાડીને જ મેં સ્કૂટર પાર્ક કર્યું હતું. ગુનો કરવાનો મારો કોઈ ઈરાદો નહોતો, પણ ધૂનમાં ને ધૂનમાં મેં બોર્ડ વાંચ્યું જ નહોતું. કામ પત્યા પછી હું પાછો ફર્યો ત્યારે ટ્રાફિક પોલીસ મારી રાહ જોઈને જ ઊભી હતી. કોઈ આપણી રાહ જોતું હોય એ આપણને ગમે જ, પણ એ વખતની સ્થિતિ અવશ્ય અણગમતી હતી. આવું થાય ત્યારે દસ-વીસ રૂપિયા પકડાવી દેવાના (આ વીસ વર્ષ પહેલાંનો ભાવ છે). નામ લખે ને કોર્ટમાં જવું પડે તો દંડ તો આટલો જ થાય, પણ હેરાનગતિ કેટલી બધી થાય ! આવી સલાહ મેં સ્કૂટર લીધું ત્યારથી જ વ્યવહારદક્ષ મિત્રો આપતા રહ્યા છે. મિત્રોની સલાહ યાદ આવતાં મેં ખિસ્સામાં હાથ નાખ્યો. ટ્રાફિક પોલીસે કડક અવાજે કહ્યું : ‘ખિસ્સામાંથી હાથ બહાર કાઢી લો. હું લાંચ લેતો નથી.’ એ વખતે પણ મને આવો જ આનંદ થયેલો. મેં કન્ડકટરને કહ્યું, ‘સાહેબ, હું આપને શરણે છું. આપ કહેશો તેમ કરીશ, પણ મને કમરનો દુખાવો છે. ઢીંચણનો વા છે, હાર્ટની તકલીફ છે. દસ પ્લૅટફૉર્મ ઓળંગી ટિકિટ લેવા જવાનું અઘરું છે અને ટ્રેન ઊપડવાનો સમય પણ થયો છે.’ મેં આટલું કહ્યું ત્યાં ટ્રેનની વ્હિસલ વાગી. કન્ડકટરે કહ્યું : ‘તમે સાચું બોલ્યા એટલે તમને મુશ્કેલીમાં મૂકતાં મને દુઃખ થાય છે, પણ રેલવેના કાયદાનું પાલન કરવાની મારી ફરજ છે. એમ કરો, હું તમને ગાંધીગ્રામ સ્ટેશન સુધી મફત લઈ જાઉં. આમ જોકે ખોટું છે, પણ ભવિષ્યમાં તમે સાચું બોલતાં બંધ ન થઈ જાવ એ વાસ્તે હું એટલું કરીશ. ગાંધીગ્રામ સ્ટેશને ઊતરી તમે ટિકિટ લઈ આવો.’
‘ગાંધીગ્રામ તો ગાડી બે-ત્રણ મિનિટ જ ઊભી રહે છે. હું નાનો હતો ત્યારે દોડવામાં ઈનામો પણ મળતાં હતાં. એ ઈનામો સાચવી રાખ્યાં છે. પણ હવે દોડવામાં….’
‘તમે ચિંતા ન કરો. તમે ટિકિટ લઈને પાછા આવો ત્યાં સુધી ગાડી ન ઊપડે એવું કરીશ.’ કન્ડકટરસાહેબે મને ધીરજ બંધાવી. જૂના જમાનામાં કોઈ રાજાને ટ્રેનમાં જવાનું થતું ત્યારે રાજા સ્ટેશને ન આવે ત્યાં સુધી ટ્રેન ઊપડતી નહીં. આજે એક પ્રજાજનને આ બહુમાન આપવામાં આવી રહ્યું હતું, પણ આ બહુમાન માણી શકું એવી મારી માનસિક સ્થિતિ નહોતી.
કાલુપુરથી ઊપડેલી ટ્રેન ગાંધીગ્રામ સ્ટેશને આવીને ઊભી રહી. જે સ્નેહીએ ઉંમર લખાવવામાં ગોટાળો કર્યો હતો એ પ્રાયશ્ચિત કરવા એમના ખર્ચે ટિકિટ લઈ આવવા તૈયાર થયા, પણ હવે કશું જોખમ લેવાની મારી તૈયારી નહોતી. ટ્રેનમાંથી ઊતરી હું સીધો ટિકિટબારીએ ગયો અને બોલ્યો, ‘સાવરકુંડલાની એક ટિકિટ આપો.’ બુકિંગ કલાર્ક ઘડી ભર મારી સામે જોઈ રહ્યા પછી બોલ્યા, ‘આજે જ જવાનું છે ?’
‘હા.’ મેં કહ્યું, ‘આજે જ જવાનું છે. અત્યારે જ જવાનું છે. આ ટ્રેનમાં જ જવાનું છે.’ કોર્ટમાં એફિડેવિટ કરતો હોઉં એમ હું એકીશ્વાસે બોલી ગયો.
‘ટ્રેન આવે એ પહેલાં આવવું જોઈએ ને ?’ આ સાંભળી હું ગભરાયો. ટ્રેન આવી જાય પછી ટિકિટ ન આપવાનો કાયદો હશે કે શું ?
મેં કહ્યું : ‘સાહેબ, આ ટ્રેન આવે એ પહેલાં આવવાનું મારા માટે શક્ય જ નહોતું.’
‘કેમ ?’
‘હું આ ટ્રેનમાં જ આવ્યો.’
‘હેં ?’ મારી વાત સાંભળી બુકિંગ કલાર્કના આશ્ચર્યની અવધિ ન રહી. એમની આટલાં વરસની નોકરીમાં આવો કિસ્સો પહેલો જ હશે એવું એમના ચહેરા પર વ્યાપેલા આશ્ચર્ય પરથી લાગતું હતું.
‘તમે આ ટ્રેનમાં આવ્યા ? વિધાઉટ ટિકિટ ?’ ‘વિધાઉટ ટિકિટ’ની વાત સાંભળી મારા મોતિયા મરી ગયા. ફરી દંડની કાર્યવાહી તોળાઈ રહી હોય એવી મને બીક લાગી, પણ ત્યાં તો કંડકટરસાહેબ આવી પહોંચ્યા. એમણે મને ટિકિટ ઈશ્યૂ કરવાનું બુકિંગ કલાર્કને કહ્યું. બુકિંગ કલાર્કે મને ટિકિટ આપી. આ ટિકિટ પર કંડકટરસાહેબે મને બીજા 60 રૂપિયા લઈ નવું રિઝર્વેશન આપ્યું. ખાધું, પીધું ને રાજ કર્યું…
પ્રસંગ 2 - બ્રહ્મચર્ય
હવે બ્રહ્મચર્ય વિષે વિચાર કરવાનો સમય આવ્યો છે. એકપત્નીવ્રતને તો વિવાહ થતાં જ મારા હ્રદયમાં સ્થાન હતું. પત્ની પ્રત્યેની વફાદારી મારા સત્યવ્રતનું અંગ હતું. પણ સ્વસ્ત્રી પ્રત્યે પણ બ્રહ્મચર્યનું પાલન કરવું એ મને દક્ષિણ આફ્રિકામાં જ સ્પષ્ટ સમજાયું. કયા પ્રસંગથી અથવા કયા પુસ્તકના પ્રભાવથી એ વિચાર મને ઉદ્ભવ્યો, એ અત્યારે મને ચોખ્ખું નથી યાદ આવતું. એટલું સ્મરણ છે કે, એમાં રાયચંદભાઈની અસરનું પ્રાધાન્ય હતું.
તેમની સાથેનો એક સંવાદ મને યાદ છે. એક વેળા હું મિસિસ ગ્લૅડસ્ટનના ગ્લૅડસ્ટન પ્રત્યેના પ્રેમની સ્તુતિ કરતો હતો. આમની સભામાં પણ મિસિસ ગ્લૅડસ્ટન પોતાના પતિને ચા બનાવીને પાતાં; આ વસ્તુનું પાલન આ નિયમબદ્ધ દંપતીના જીવનનો એક નિયમ થઈ પડ્યો હતો, એ મેં ક્યાંક વાંચેલું. તે મેં કવિને વાંચી સંભળાવ્યું, ને તેને અંગે મેં દપતીપ્રેમની સ્તુતિ કરી. રાયચંદભાઈ બોલ્યા, 'એમાં તમને મહત્ત્વનું શું લાગે છે? મિસિસ ગ્લૅડસ્ટનનું પત્નીપણું, કે તેનો સેવાભાવ? જો તે બાઈ ગ્લૅડસ્ટનનાં બહેન હોત તો? અથવા, તેની વફાદાર નોકર હોત ને તેટલા જ પ્રેમથી ચા આપત તો? એવી બહેનો, એવી નોકરનાં દૃષ્ટાંતો આપણને આજે નહીં મળે? અને નારીજાતિને બદલે એવો પ્રેમ નરજાતિમાં જોયો હોત તો તમને સાનંદાશ્ચર્ય ન થાત? હું કહું છું તે વિચારજો.'
રાયચંદભાઈ પોતે વિવાહિત હતા. એ વેળા તો મને તેમનું વચન કઠોર લાગેલું એવું સ્મરણ છે. પણ તે વચને મને લોહચુંબકની જેમ પકડ્યો. પુરુષ ચાકરની એવી વફાદારીની કિંમત પત્નીની વફાદારીની કિંમત કરતાં તો હજાર ગણી ચડે. પતિપત્ની વચ્ચે ઐક્ય હોય, એટલે તેમની વચ્ચે પ્રેમ હોય એમાં આશ્ચર્ય નથી. નોકરશેઠ વચ્ચે તેવો પ્રેમ કેળવવો પડે. દિવસે દિવસે કવિના વચનનું બળ મારી આગળ વધતું જણાયું.
મારે પત્નીની સાથે કેવો સંબંધ રાખવો? પત્નીને વિષયભોગનું વાહન બનાવવી એમાં પત્ની પ્રત્યે ક્યાં વફાદારી આવે છે? હું જ્યાં લગી વિષયવાસનાને આધીન રહું ત્યાં લગી મારી વફાદારીની પ્રાકૃત કિંમત જ ગણાય. મારે અહીં કહેવું જોઈએ કે, અમારી વચ્ચેના સંબંધમાં કોઈ દિવસ મને પત્ની તરફથી આક્રમણ થયું જ નથી. એ દૃષ્ટિએ હું જ્યારે ઈચ્છું ત્યારે મારે સારુ બ્રહ્મચર્યનું પાલન સુલભ હતું. મારી અશક્તિ અથવા આસક્તિ જ મને રોકી રહી હતી.
હું જાગ્રત થયા પછી પણ બે વખત તો નિષ્ફળ જ ગયો. પ્રયત્ન કરું પણ પડું. પ્રયત્નમાં મુખ્ય હેતુ ઊંચો નહોતો. મુખ્ય હેતુ પ્રજોત્પત્તિ અટકાવવાનો હતો. તેના બાહ્યોપચારો વિષે કંઈક મેં વિલાયતમાં વાંચ્યું હતું. દાક્તર ઍલિન્સનના એ ઉપાયોના પ્રચારનો ઉલ્લેખ હું અન્નાહારવાળા પ્રકરણમાં કરી ચૂક્યો છું. તેની કંઈક અને ક્ષણિક અસર મારા ઉપર થયેલી. પણ મિ. હિલ્સનના તેના વિરોધની અને આંતરસાધનના — સંયમના સમર્થનની અસર ઘણી વધારે નીવડી અને અનુભવે ચિરસ્થાયી બની. તેથી પ્રજોત્પત્તિની અનાવશ્યકતા સમજાતાં સંયમપાલનનો પ્રયત્ન આદર્યો.
સંયમપાલનની મુશ્કેલીઓનો પાર નહોતો. નોખા ખાટલા રાખ્યા. રાત્રે થાકીને જ સૂવાનો પ્રયત્ન કર્યો. આ બધા પ્રયત્નનું બહુ પરિણામ તુરત ન જોઈ શક્યો. પણ આજે ભૂતકાળની ઉપર આંખ ફેરવતાં જોઉં છું કે એ બધા પ્રયત્નોએ મને છેવટનું બળ આપ્યું.
અંતિમ નિશ્ચય તો છેક ૧૯૦૬ની સાલમાં જ કરી શક્યો. તે વખતે સત્યાગ્રહનો આરંભ નહોતો થયો. તેનું મને સ્વપ્ન સરખુંયે નહોતું. બોઅર યુદ્ધ પછી નાતાલમાં ઝૂલુ 'બળવો' થયો. એ વેળા હું જોહાનિસબર્ગમાં વકીલાત કરતો હતો. પણ મને લાગ્યું કે મારે તે 'બળવા'ને અંગે પણ મારી સેવા નાતાલ સરકારને અર્પવી જોઈએ. મેં તે આપી. તે કબૂલ થઈ. તેનું વર્ણન હવે પછી આવશે. પણ આ સેવાને અંગે મને તીવ્ર વિચારો ઉત્પન્ન થયા. મારા સ્વભાવ પ્રમાણે, મારા સાથીઓ જોડે મેં તેની ચર્ચા કરી. મને લાગ્યું કે પ્રજોત્પત્તિ અને પ્રજાઉછેર જાહેરસેવાનાં વિરોધી છે. આ 'બળવા'માં દાખલ થવા સારુ મારે મારું જોહાનિસબર્ગનું ઘર વીંખવું પડ્યું હતું. ટાપટીપથી વસાવેલા ઘરનો અને રાચરચીલાનો, તે વસાવ્યાં માંડ મહિનો થયો હશે તેટલામા, મેં ત્યાગ કર્યો. પત્નીને અને બાળકોને ફિનિક્સમાં રાખ્યાં, ને હું ભોઈની ટુકડી લઈને નીકળી પડ્યો. કઠણ કૂચો કરતાં મેં જોયું કે, જો મારે લોકસેવામાં જ તન્મય થઈ જવું હોય તો પુત્રૈષણા તેમ જ વિત્તૈષણાનો ત્યાગ કરવો જોઈએ. અને વાનપ્રસ્થધર્મનું પાલન કરવું જોઈએ.
