ખય્યામ : 'ઉમરાવ જાન'માં પ્રાણ પૂરનારા સંગીતકાર 'શર્માજી'ની વિદાય
"કભી કિસી કો મુકમ્મલ જહાં નહીં મિલતા
કહીં ઝમી તો કહીં આસમાં નહીં મિલતા
જિસે ભી દેખિયે વો અનપે આપ મેં ગુમ હૈ
ઝુબાં મિલી હૈ મગર હમઝુબાં નહીં મિલતા"
જો તમને પૂછવામાં આવે કે 1981માં આવેલા આ ફિલ્મીગીતના સંગીતકાર કોણ છે તો તમારો જવાબ હશે કે પ્રખ્યાત સંગીતકાર ખય્યામ.
એ જ સંગીતકાર ખય્યામ જેમણે 1947માં શરૂ થયેલી પોતાની ફિલ્મી કારકિર્દીનાં પ્રથમ પાંચ વર્ષ 'શર્માજી'ના નામે સંગીત પીરસ્યું હતું
ભારતીય સિનેમાના દિગ્ગજ સંગીતકાર મોહમ્મદ ઝહુર ખય્યામ હાશ્મીનું સોમવાર રાતે સાડા નવ વાગ્યે 93 વર્ષની ઉંમરે નિધન થઈ ગયું.
છેલ્લા કેટલાક સમયથી તેમને શ્વાસ લેવામાં તકલીફ પડી રહી હતી અને મુંબઈના જુહૂમાં તેમની સારવાર ચાલી રહી હતી.
વડા પ્રધાન નરેન્દ્ર મોદી સહિત ફિલ્મ, કળા, રાજકારણ અને અન્ય ક્ષેત્રો સાથે સંકળાયેલા લોકોએ ખય્યામ સાહેબના નિધન પર શોક વ્યક્ત કર્યો છે અને શ્રદ્ધાંજલિ પાઠવી છે.
શર્માજી અને વર્માજી
વર્માજી એટલે કે રહેમાન પાકિસ્તાન ચાલ્યા ગતો તો પાછળ રહી ગયા શર્માજી.
વાત 1952ની છે. શર્માજી કેટલીય ફિલ્મોમાં સંગીત આપી ચૂક્યા હતા અને તેમણે ઝિયા સરહદીની ફિલ્મ 'ફૂટપાથ' પર સંગીત આપવાની તક મળી.
દિલીપ કુમાર પર ગીત ફિલ્માવાયું હતું. "શામ-એ-ગમ કી કસમ આજ ગમગી હૈં હમ, આ ભી જા, આ ભી જા આજ મેરે સનમ..."
દૂરદર્શનના એક જૂના ઇન્ટરવ્યૂમાં ખય્યામ કહે છે,
"એક દિવસ વાતોનો સિલસિલો ચાલ્યો તો ઝિયા સરહદીએ પૂછ્યું કે તમારું આખું નામ શું છે? મેં કહ્યું મોહમ્મદ ઝહુર ખય્યામ. તો તેમણે કહ્યું કે અરે તમે ખય્યામ નામ કેમ નથી રાખી લેતા?
બસ એ જ દિવસથી હું ખય્યામ બની ગયો."
આ જ ખય્યામે 'કભી-કભી', 'બાઝાર', 'ઉમરાવજાન', 'રઝીયા સુલતાન' જેવી ફિલ્મોમાં ઉત્તમોત્તમ સંગીત આપ્યું.
અભિનેતા બનવાની ચાહ
18 ફેબ્રુઆરી 1927માં જન્મેલા ખય્યામના પરિવારને ફિલ્મો સાથે દૂરદૂર સુધી કોઈ સંબંધ નહોતો. તેમના પરિવારમાં કોઈ ઇમામ હતું તો કોઈ મુજાવર.
જોકે, એ વખતના કેટલાય યુવકોની જેમ ખય્યામ પર પણ કે.એલ. સહેગલનો નશો હતો. તેઓ એમની માફક ગાયક અને ઍક્ટર બનવા માગતા હતા.
બસ, એટલે જ તેઓ નાની ઉંમરે ઘરેથી ભાગીને દિલ્હીમાં કાકા પાસે પહોંચી ગયા.
ઘરે તો ભારે વાંધો ઊઠ્યો પણ બાદમાં પ્રખ્યાત સંગીતકાર પંડિત હુશનલાલ-ભગતરામ પાસેથી તેમણે સંગીત શીખવું એવું નક્કી કરાયું.
થોડા સમય સુધી સંગીત શીખ્યું પણ બાદમાં તેઓ જુવાનીના નશામાં પોતાના નસીબને અજમાવવા મુંબઈ દોડી ગયા. જોકે, અહીં તેમને અહેસાસ થયો કે તેમણે હજુ ઘણું શીખવાનું બાકી છે.
સંગીત શીખવાની ચાહત તેમને દિલ્હીથી લાહોરમાં બાબા ચિશ્તી(સંગીતકાર ગુલામ અહેમદ ચિશ્તી) પાસે લઈ ગઈ, જેમના ફિલ્મી વર્તુળમાં બહુ સંબંધો હતા. લાહોર એ વખતે ફિલ્મનો ગઢ ગણાતો હતું.
બાબા ચિશ્તીના ઘરે ખય્યામ એક ટ્રેઇનીની માફક રહેવા લાગ્યા અને સંગીત શીખવા લાગ્યા.
દૂરદર્શન સહિત પોતાના કેટલાય ઇન્ટરવ્યૂમાં ખય્યામ એક કિસ્સો ચોક્કસથી સંભળાવતા હતા,
"એક વખત બી.આર. ચોપરા બાબા ચિશ્તીના ઘર પર હતા અને ચિશ્તીસાહેબ સૌને પગાર આપી રહ્યા હતા. પણ મને પૈસા ન મળ્યા એ બી.આર ચોપરાએ જોયું અને તેનું કારણ પૂછ્યું."
"એટલે બાબા ચિશ્તીએ જણાવ્યું કે આ યુવાન સાથે નક્કી થયું છે કે તે સંગીત શીખશે અને મારા ઘરે રહેશે પણ એને પૈસા નહીં મળે."
"એટલે ચોપરાએ કહ્યું કે મેં જોયું છે કે સૌથી વધુ કામ તો આ જ કરે છે. બસ બી.આર. ચોપરાએ એ જ વખતે મને રૂપિયા 120નો પગાર આપી દીધો અને આવી રીતે મારો ચોપરા પરિવાર સાથે સંબંધ બંધાઈ ગયો."

ખય્યામે અન્ય સંગીતકારોની તુલનામાં ઓછું કામ કર્યું છે પરંતુ જે પણ કામ કર્યું છે તે અદ
ભૂત માનવામાં આવે છે.
એક સંગીતપ્રેમી તરીકે હું જ્યારે પણ તેમનાં ગીતો સાંભળું છું ત્યારે ગજબની શાંતિ અનુભવાય છે.
ફિલ્મ 'બાજાર'નું ગીત- 'દેખ લો આજ હમકો જી ભરકે' કે પછી 'ઉમરાવ જાન'નું ગીત 'જિંદગી જબ ભી તેરી વઝ્મ મેં લાતી હૈ મુઝે, યે જમીં ચાંદ સી બેહતર નજર આતી હૈ હમે...'
આ માટે ખય્યામ ખૂબ મહેનત કરતા હતા. ઉદાહરણ તરીકે 1982ની ફિલ્મ 'ઉમરાવ જાન' લઈ લો.
આ ફિલ્મ એક ઉપન્યાસ 'ઉમરાવ જાન અદા' પર આધારિત હતી જેમાં 19 સદીની એક તવાયફની કહાણી દર્શાવવામાં આવી છે.
ખય્યામે આ ફિલ્મના સંગીત માટે તે ઉપન્યાસ વાચ્યો એટલું જ નહીં તે સમયની દરેક બારીકીઓને પણ જાણી.
તે સમયે રાગ-રાગણી શું હતી, પહેરવશ અને ભાષાની પણ જાણકારી મેળવી.
એસવાઈ કુરૈશીને આપેલા એક ઇન્ટરવ્યૂમાં ખય્યામ કહે છે, "ખૂબ અભ્યાસ કર્યા બાદ મેં અને જગજીતજી (તેમનાં પત્ની)એ નક્કી કર્યું કે ઉમરાવ જાનનો અવાજ કેવો હશે."
"મેં મારા અવાજમાં આશા ભોસલેને ગીત રૅકર્ડ કરીને આપ્યું હતું. પરંતુ રિહર્સલ દરમિયાન ગીત ગાતી વખતે આશાજી પરેશાન દેખાયાં અને કહ્યું કે આ તમારો અવાજ નથી."
"મેં તમને ખૂબ જ સમજાવવાનો પ્રયાસ કર્યો કે મારે ઉમરાવ જાનનો અવાજ જોઈએ છે. તેમનો જવાબ હતો કે તમારી ઉમરાવ જાન તો ગાઈ શકતી જ નથી."
"ત્યારબાદ અમારી વચ્ચે એક સમજૂતી થઈ. મેં કહ્યું કે આપણે બે તરફથી ગીત રૅકર્ડ કરીએ. આશાએ મને સોગન આપ્યાં કે હું તેમના અવાજમાં પણ ગીત રૅકર્ડ કરીશ અને તેઓ હું જે ઇચ્છું છું તે અવાજમાં ગીત ગાશે."
"આશાએ ઉમરાવના અવાજમાં ગીત ગાયું અને તે એટલી ખોવાઈ ગઈ કે ખુદ હેરાન હતી અને બસ કામ થઈ ગયું."
ઉમરાવ જાન ફિલ્મ માટે ખય્યામ અને આશા ભોસલેને રાષ્ટ્રીય પુરષ્કાર મળ્યો.
88મા જન્મદિવસ પર ખય્યામે બીબીસીને આપેલા ઇન્ટરવ્યૂમાં કહ્યું હતું કે 'ઉમરાવ જાન'નું સંગીત આપતા પહેલાં તેઓ ખૂબ ડરી ગયા હતા.
કારણ કે તેના થોડા સમય પહેલાં ફિલ્મ 'પાકિઝા' આવી હતી અને તેનું સંગીત બેન્ચમાર્ક બની ગયું હતું.
સંગીતને લઈને સાથી કલાકારો સાથે ખય્યામના કિસ્સા પણ યાદગાર છે. માન-સન્માનથી તેઓ ગાયકોને મનાવી લેતા હતા પરંતુ તેઓ તેમની ધૂનના પાક્કા હતા.
ખય્યામની ફિલ્મી સફર વર્ષ 'હીર-રાંજા'થી શરૂ થઈ હતી. તેમણે 'રોમિયો-જુલીયેટ' ફિલ્મમાં સંગીત પણ આપ્યું.
1950માં આવેલી ફિલ્મ 'બીવી'નું ગીત 'અકેલે મેં વો ઘબરાતે તો હોંગે'થી તેઓ ચર્ચામાં આવ્યા હતા. આ ગીત રફીએ ગાયું હતું.
1953માં આવેલી ફિલ્મ 'ફૂટપાથ'થી તેમને ઓળખ મળી અને ત્યારબાદથી તો આ સિલસિલો ક્યારેય રોકાયો નહીં.
1958માં આવેલી ફિલ્મ 'ફિર સુબહ હોગી'માં મુકેશ સાથે તેમણે 'વો સુબહ કભી તો આયેગી' બનાવ્યું. 1961માં ફિલ્મ 'શોલા ઔર શબનમ'માં રફી સાથે 'જાને ક્યા ઢૂંઢતી રહતી હૈ યે આંખે મુજમે' રચ્યું.
વર્ષ 1966ની ફિલ્મ 'આખરી ખત'માં લતા સાથે 'બહારો મેરા જીવન ભી સવારો' લઈને આવ્યા.
રસપ્રદ વાત એ છે કે રાજ કપૂર સાથે તેમને 'ફિર સુબહ હોગી'માં કામ કરવાની તક મળવાનું કારણ એ હતું કે તેઓ જ એકમાત્ર સંગીત નિર્દેશક હતા જેમણે ઉપન્યાસ 'ક્રાઇમ ઍન્ડ પનિશમૅન્ટ' વાચી હતી જેના પર ફિલ્મ બની રહી હતી.
ખય્યામે 70 અને 80ના દાયકામાં 'કભી-કભી', 'ત્રિશૂલ', 'ખાનદાન', 'નૂરી', 'થોડી સી બેવફાઈ', 'દર્દ', 'આહિસ્તા આહિસ્તા', 'દિલ-એ-નાદાન', 'બાઝાર', 'રઝિયા સુલતાન' જેવી ફિલ્મમોમાં એક કરતાં એક ચડિયાતાં ગીતો આપ્યાં.
કદાચ આ તેમની કારકિર્દીનો સૂવર્ણયુગ હતો.
પ્રેમકહાણી
ખય્યામના જીવનમાં તેમનાં પત્ની જગજીત કૌરનું બહુ મોટું યોગદાન રહ્યું છે, જેમનો ઉલ્લેખ કરવાનું તેઓ કોઈ પણ મંચ પર નહોતા ભૂલ્યા.
જગજીત કૌર પોતે પણ બહુ ઉમદા ગાયિકા હતાં.
'બાઝાર મેં દેખ લો હમકો જી ભરકે' કે 'કાહે બયાહે બિદેસ' જેવાં પણ ગણીગાંઠી હિંદી ફિલ્મોમાં તેમણે ઉત્તમ ગીતો ગાયાં છે
સારા એવા પૈસાદાર શીખ પરિવારમાંથી આવતાં જગજીત કૌરે ખય્યામ સાથે એ વખત લગ્ન કર્યાં કે જ્યારે તેઓ પોતાનું નામ બનાવવા સંઘર્ષ કરી રહ્યા હતા.
પૈસો કે ધર્મ એ બન્ને પ્રેમીઓ વચ્ચે ક્યારેય દીવાલ ન બની શક્યા.
બન્નેની મુલાકાત તો સંગીતની દુનિયામાં થઈ જ ચૂકી હતી પણ જ્યારે મુંબઈમાં એક સંગીતસ્પર્ધા દરમિયાન જગજીત કૌરની પસંદગી થઈ તો તેમને ખય્યામ સાથે કામ કરવાની તક મળી અને બન્ને વચ્ચે પ્રેમ પાંગર્યો.
જગજીત કૌર ભલે ફિલ્મોથી દૂર રહ્યાં પણ ખય્યામની ફિલ્મોમાં જગજીત કૌર તેમની સાથે મળીને સંગીત પર કામ કરતાં હતાં.
બન્ને માટે એ બહુ જ મુશ્કેલ સમય હતો જ્યારે વર્ષ 2013માં પુત્ર પ્રદીપનું મૃત્યુ થયું પણ દરેક મુશ્કેલીમાં જગજીત કૌરે ખય્યામનો સાથ આપ્યો.
બન્નેની પ્રેમકહાણી જોઈને એવું લાગે છે કે જગજીત કૌરે ખય્યામ માટે જ એમના નિર્દેશનમાં આ ગીત ગાયુ હશે,
"તુમ અપના રંજ-ઓ-ગમ, અપની પરેશાની મુજે દે દો
તુમ્હે ગમ કી કસમ, ઇસ દિલ કી વીરાની મુજે દે દો
મૈં દેખૂં તો સહી દુનિયા તુમ્હેં કૈસે સતાતી હૈં
કોઈ દિન કે લિયે અપની નિગહબાની મુજે દે દો"
અહીં વર્ષ 1976માં આવેલી ફિલ્મ 'કભી-કભી'ના ઉલ્લેખ વગર ખય્યામ પર વાત અધૂરી ગણાશે.
બીબીસીને આપેલા એક ઇન્ટરવ્યૂમાં ખય્યામે જણાવ્યું હતું, "યશ ચોપરા પોતાની એક ફિલ્મ માટે મારી પાસે સંગીત તૈયાર કરાવવા માગતા હતા. પણ સૌ તેમને મારી સાથે કામ ન કરવાનું કહી રહ્યા હતા."
"તેમણે મને કહ્યું પણ હતું કે ઇન્ડસ્ટ્રીમાં કેટલાય લોકો એવું કહે છે કે ખય્યામ બહુ કમનસીબ છે. તેમનું સંગીત હિટ તો થાય છે પણ જ્યુબિલી નથી ઉજવી શકતું. પણ મેં યશ ચોપરાની ફિલ્મમાં સંગીત આપ્યું અને ફિલ્મે ડબલ જ્યુબિલી કરીને સૌની બોલતી બંધ કરી દીધી."
ખરેખર સાહિર લુધિયાનવીની શાયરીમાં ડૂબેલાં અને ખય્યામના સંગીતથી નિખારેલાં 'કભી-કભી'ના તમામ ગીતો લાજવાબ છે.
અહીં યાદ આવે છે એ ગીત -
"મૈં પલ દો પલ કા શાયર હૂં... "કલ ઔર આયેંગે નગમો કી ખિલતી કલિયાં ચુનને વાલેમુજસે બેહતર કહને વાલે તુમસે બેહતર સુનને વાલે કલ કોઈ મુજકો યાદ કરે, ક્યોં કોઈ મુજકો યાદ કરેમસરુફ ઝમાના મેરે લિયે, ક્યૂં વક્ત અપના બર્બાદ કરેમૈં પલ દો પલ કા શાયર હૂં..."
ખય્યામ ભલે સંગીતપ્રેમીઓથી અલગ થઈ ગયા હોય પણ કેટલાય સંગીતપ્રેમીઓ માટે તેમનાથી 'બેહતર કહને વાલા' કોઈ નહીં હોય.
હિંદી ફિલ્મસંગીતમાં જેને સૂવર્ણયુગ કહેવાય છે એ યુગના અંતિમ તાંતણા સાથે જાડાયેલો વધુ એક તાર ખય્યામના જવાથી તૂટી ગયો છે.
