જ્યાં મૅચ રમાવાની છે તે લંડનની 120 કિલોમિટર દૂર આવેલું સાઉથૅમ્ટન અનેક રીતે ખાસ શહેર છે. સ્થાનિક લોકોનું માનવું છે કે દક્ષિણ-પૂર્વ ઇંગ્લૅન્ડના સૌથી મોટા શહેર સાઉથૅમ્પટનનો વિકાસ ખૂબ મોડો થયો છે. આની સામે ઉત્તર ઇંગ્લૅન્ડ ઉદ્યોગો અને રોજગાર માટે બહેતર ગણાય છે. દક્ષિણ ઇંગ્લૅન્ડમાં હવે લાંબા સમય પછી વિકાસ જોવા મળી રહ્યો છે અને તેનો લાભ સાઉથૅમ્પટનને મળ્યો છે.
ઍન્ડ્રૂ સાઉથૅમ્પટનની એક રેસ્ટરૉમાં કામ કરે છે. તેઓ કહે છે કે આ શહેર લંડનની સાવ અલગ છે. "અહીં જીવન સાધારણ અને ખુશખુશાલ છે. હું અહીં છ વર્ષ અગાઉ લંડનથી આવ્યો હતો. મને અહીં શાંતિ લાગે છે. જોકે, તમે ખૂબ મોટી પાર્ટી કરનારા વ્યકિત હો તો આ શહેર તમને ન ગમે."
ઍન્ડ્રૂ સાચું કહે છે. અહીં રાતે 10 પછી ખુલ્લાં હોય એવા વધારે રેસ્ટરૉ કે પબ્સ નથી. રસ્તાઓ તો સાંજે જ ખાલી થઈ જાય છે. સિટી સેન્ટ્રલ પાસે થોડી ભીડ જોવા મળે છે. ગરમીમાં સડક પર ખૂબ ઓછા લોકો દેખાય છે ત્યારે શિયાળામાં તો શું માહોલ હશે એની તો કલ્પના જ કરવી રહી. આ શહેરના જે મેદાનમાં ભારત અને દક્ષિણ આફ્રિકા આજે ટકરાશે તે 'ધ ઍજિસ બૉવ્લ' મેદાન છે.

આ મેદાનનો વિસ્તાર એવો શાંત છે કે લાગતું જ નથી કે અહીં આટલી મોટી મૅચ રમાવાની છે. સ્ટેડિયમ પાસે થોડાં બેનર્સ લાગેલાં છે જેમાં મૅચની વાત છે. આ મેદાનનો એક ઈતિહાસ પણ છે.
2003માં અહીં પ્રથમ મૅચ દક્ષિણ આફ્રિકા અને ઝિમ્બાબ્વૅ વચ્ચે રમાઈ હતી. અત્યાર સુધી અહીં 23 મૅચ રમાઈ ચૂકી છે અને જેમાં જે ટીમે પ્રથમ બૅટિંગ પસંદ કરી તે ટીમ 12 મૅચ જીતી ચૂકી છે. 10 મૅચ બૉલિંગ પસંદ કરનાર ટીમ જીતી છે. જાણકારો માને છે તે જે ટીમ ટૉસ જીતીને બૅટિંગનો નિર્ણય કરશે તે ટીમ જીતશે. ભારત તેની પ્રથમ મૅચ જીતી ધમાકેદાર શરૂઆત કરવા માગે છે પણ ઇતિહાસ કંઈક અલગ જ કહે છે.
2015ના વિશ્વ કપ સિવાયની વાત કરીએ તો ભારતની શરૂઆત ક્યારેય સારી નથી રહી. વર્ષ 2003માં ભારત ફાઇનલમાં પહોંચ્યું હતું પરંતુ તેની શરૂઆત સારી નહોતી. દક્ષિણ આફ્રિકા ભલે તેની બે મૅચ હારી ચૂક્યું હોય પરંતુ આ મેદાન પર એમનો દેખાવ ભારત કરતાં સારો રહ્યો છે. આ મેદાનમાં દક્ષિણ આફ્રિકા અને ભારત ત્રણ-ત્રણ મૅચ રમ્યાં છે અને દક્ષિણ આફ્રિકાએ એમાંથી બે મૅચ જીતેલી છે.
એક મૅચ દક્ષિણ આફ્રિકા ઇંગ્લૅન્ડ સામે બે રનથી હારી ગયું હતું. ભારતની વાત કરીએ તો ભારત બે મૅચ ઇંગ્લૅન્ડ સામે ખરાબ રીતે હારેલું છે અને એક મૅચ કૅન્યા સામે જીત્યું હતું.
તમિલનાડુથી યૂકે આવેલા બાલાજી કહે છે, "આ આંકડાંઓ ખોટા સાબિત થવાના છે. ભારત આ મૅચ જીતી જશે અને હિટમૅન રોહિત શર્મા મૅન ઑફ ધ મૅચ બનશે. રોહિત શર્મા આ વખતે જોરદાર ફૉર્મમાં હશે. ભારત આ વખતે ફાઇનલમાં પહોંચે છે. આવનારા દિવસોમાં અનેક ભારતીયો અહીં સ્ટેડિયમમાં જોવા મળશે."
બાલાજી કહે છે, "મેં એક વર્ષ સુધી આ ટૂર્નામૅન્ટ માટે પૈસાની બચત કરી છે અને આજે હું અહીં છું."
બાલાજી એકલા નથી. દિલ્હીના સુનિલ કાલરા પણ અહીં ટીમનો ઉત્સાહ વધારવા આવી ગયા છે.
સુનિલ કહે છે, "મારા માટે આ પહેલી વાર નથી. હું છેલ્લાં 20 વર્ષથી દરેક વિશ્વ કપ જોતો આવ્યો છું. ભારતની ટીમને રમતી જોવી અને તેમનો ઉત્સાહ વધારવો એનાથી વધારે એક ફૅનને શું જોઈએ?"
તેઓ કહે છે, "હું મારી ટીમનો ઉત્સાહ વધારવા ધરતીના કોઈ પણ છેડે જઈ શકું છું. મેં મારી આખી જિંદગી અને કમાણી ક્રિકેટને નામે કરી દીધી છે. હું કલાકોના કલાકો સુધી ક્રિકેટ પર વાત કરી શકું છું. બીજે દિવસે પણ ફરી એ જ તાજગી સાથે ક્રિકેટ પર વાત કરી શકું છું."
પરંતુ દરેક સુનિલ કાલરાની જેમ તકદીરવાળા નથી હોતા. કેરલના જિથિન સાઉથૅમ્પટનની પાસે એક હૉસ્પિટલમાં કામ કરે છે પરંતુ એમની પાસે એટલાં પૈસા નથી કે તેઓ ટિકિટ ખરીદીને મૅચ જોઈ શકે.
તેઓ કહે છે, "દરરોજ હું હૉસ્પિટલ આવું છું અને જ્યાં ખેલાડીઓ રોકાયા છે એ હોટેલનાં ચક્કર લગાવું છું. વિરાટ કોહલની એક ઝલક જોઈ લઉ એટલી ઇચ્છા છે. અહીં સુરક્ષા માટે ખૂબ કડક વ્યવસ્થા છે પણ તે છતાં મને આશા છે કે ટીમ ઑવલ જવા રવાના થઈ જાય તે અગાઉ હું એમને જોઈ શકીશ."
ક્રિકેટ ભારતીયોને એક કરી દે છે
તેમણે જણાવ્યું, "બ્રિટનમાં ભૂતકાળમાં યોજાયેલા ICC વર્લ્ડ કપની સરખામણીએ જે રીતે સ્થાનિક ટીમ રમી રહી છે, તે હિસાબે આ સૌથી રોમાંચક ટૂર્નામેન્ટ હશે."
"આ વખતે અમે કોઈને ઍવૉર્ડ આપવા જઈ રહ્યા નથી, બસ વર્લ્ડ કપ લેવા જઈ રહ્યા છીએ."
ક્રિકેટ અને પોતાના મનપસંદ સ્ટાર વિશે વાત કરતા ઘણા એશિયાઈ લોકો મળી જશે.
બ્રિટિશ માને છે કે આ ટૂર્નામેન્ટ તેમની ટીમ માટે સૌથી સારી ટૂર્નામેન્ટ હશે. 1992 બાદ ઇંગ્લૅન્ડ સેમી ફાઇનલમાં પણ પહોંચી શક્યું નથી.
તેઓ કહે છે, "ભારત દ્વારા હજુ પહેલી મૅચ રમાવાની બાકી છે. તમે જાતે જોઈ શકો છો કે ભારતીય ટીમની મૅચ બાદ કેટલું પરિવર્તન આવે છે. અને ભારત- પાકિસ્તાનની રમત માન્ચેસ્ટરમાં છે."
"તેનાથી કોઈ ફેર પડતો નથી કે કોણ જીતે છે પરંતુ હું તમને જણાવી રહી છું કે ટૂર્નામેન્ટની આ મૅચ કેવી મૅચ હશે."
આ વાતને આગળ જોડતા તેમના એક મિત્ર કહે છે, "લંડનના કેટલાંક પૉકેટમાં ઘણા ભારતીય સમુદાયો રહે છે. તમે સાઉથહૉલમાં આવી શકે છો, તે ખરેખર એક નાનું પંજાબ છે."
"ટૂટિંગમાં ઘણા તમિલ લોકો રહે છે. વૅમ્બલી અને બીજી ઘણી જગ્યાએ અડધા ગુજરાતી મળી જશે. પરંતુ ક્રિકેટ તેમને એક રાખે છે. ક્રિકેટ મૅચવાળા દિવસે તમે જાતે જ જોઈ શકો છો."
