જ્યારે બાપુએ મુજરો કરાવી તવાયફનું દિલ તોડ્યું...
વર્ષ 1890ના સમયગાળામાં ભારતમાં પારંપરિક દેવદાસીઓ, તવાયફો અને નર્તકીઓના વિષયમાં નૈતિક્તાના સવાલ ઉઠવા લાગ્યા હતા.
વર્ષ 1893માં મદ્રાસના ગવર્નરને એક અરજી આપવામાં આવી કે 'નાચ-ગાનનો ગંદો ધંધો' બંધ કરાવવામાં આવે.
ત્યારબાદ વર્ષ 1909માં મૈસુરના મહારાજાએ દેવદાસી પરંપરાને ગેરકાયદેસર જાહેર કરી દીધી. પંજાબની પ્યોરિટી એસોસિએશન અને મુંબઈની સોશિયલ સર્વિસ લીગ જેવી સંસ્થાઓએ પણ વાંધો ઉઠાવ્યો હતો.
કલકત્તાનાં પ્રખ્યાત તવાયફ ગૌહર જાન તે સમયે દેશનાં પ્રખ્યાત ગાયિકા હતાં અને તેઓ બદલાતી હવાને પારખી રહ્યાં હતાં.

તેમણે શાસ્ત્રીય-ઉપશાસ્ત્રીય સંગીતને કોઠામાંથી બહાર કાઢી ગ્રામોફોન રેકર્ડ ઉદ્યોગ સાથે લાવીને જોડ્યું.
આ તરફ બીજી ગાયિકાઓએ પણ કાશીમાં 1921માં 'તવાયફ સંઘ' બનાવીને અસહયોગ આંદોલન સાથે પોતાની જમાતને જોડી લીધી.
આ રીતે 1920 આસપાસ આ હુન્નર ધરાવતી પણ ઉપેક્ષિત મહિલાઓ મહાત્મા ગાંધીના આદર્શવાદ પ્રત્યે ઝૂકવા લાગી હતી.
જોકે તત્કાલીન વિલાયતી વિચાર ધરાવતા સંકીર્ણ લોકો તેમના પર વેશ્યાનો થપ્પો લગાવીને કોઠા બંધ કરાવવા માટે ઉતાવળા હતા.
અંગ્રેજીમાં ભણેલા ગણેલા ઘણા ધનવાન લોકો તેમને જોઈને મોઢાં બગાડતા હતા.
ગાંધીજી ખરેખર દીનબંધુ હતા અને તેમની દૃષ્ટિએ 'ગાયિકાઓ' પણ ભારતની જનતાનું જ એક આત્મીય અંગ હતી.
સ્વરાજ આંદોલનની જનસભાઓમાં સંગીતનાં આકર્ષણનું મહત્ત્વ પણ તેઓ સમજતા હતા.

વર્ષ 1920માં જ્યારે ગાંધીજી કલકત્તામાં સ્વરાજ ફંડ માટે ફાળો એકત્રિત કરી રહ્યા હતા. તેમણે ગૌહર જાનને બોલાવીને તેમને તેમનાં હુન્નરથી આંદોલન માટે ફાળો એકઠો કરવા અપીલ કરી.
ગૌહર જાન આ પ્રસ્તાવથી ચકિત અને ખુશ થયાં. જોકે, તે દુનિયા જોઈ ચૂક્યાં હતાં અને જાણતાં હતાં કે સમાજમાં ગાયિકાઓ માટે કેવા વિચાર છે.
તેમનાં એક વિશ્વસ્ત ત્રિલોકીનાથ અગ્રવાલે 1988માં 'ધર્મયુગ'માં તેનો ઉલ્લેખ કરતા કહ્યું હતું કે, ‘ગૌહર જાને બાપુના પ્રસ્તાવને માન આપ્યું.
પરંતુ તેમણે કંઈક એવું પણ કહ્યું કે બાપુએ તેમને કરેલી મદદની અપીલ, હજામ પાસે ડૉક્ટરનું કામ કરાવવા સમાન હતી.’
એટલે ગૌહર જાને બાપુ પાસેથી પહેલેથી જ આશ્વાસન લીધું કે તેઓ એક ખાસ મુજરો કરશે જેની બધી જ કમાણી તેઓ સ્વરાજ ફંડને દાન કરી દેશે. પરંતુ તેમની એક શરત પણ હતી, કે બાપુ તેમને સાંભળવા માટે એ મુજરાની મહેફિલમાં આવે.
કહેવાય છે કે બાપુ તૈયાર પણ થઈ ગયા હતા. પરંતુ પછી કાર્યક્રમના દિવસે જ કોઈ મોટું રાજકીય કામ સામે આવી ગયું, અને તે તેમના વાયદા પ્રમાણે મહેફિલનો ભાગ બની શક્યા નહીં.
ગૌહરની નજરો ઘણા સમય સુધી બાપુ માટે રાહ જોતી રહી હતી, પરંતુ તે ન આવ્યા.
જોકે, લોકોથી ખીચોખીચ ભરેલા હૉલમાં મુજરો થયો અને તેમની કુલ કમાણી 24 હજાર રૂપિયા થઈ, જે એ સમયે ખૂબ મોટી રકમ હતી.
બીજા દિવસે બાપુએ મૌલાના શૌકત અલીને ગૌહર જાનના ઘરે ફાળો લેવા માટે મોકલ્યા.
પરંતુ ગુસ્સે ભરાયેલાં ગૌહરે કુલ કમાણીનો અડધો ભાગ એટલે કે 12 હજાર રૂપિયા જ તેમને આપ્યા અને રૂપિયા આપતી વખતે મૌલાનાને મહેણું મારતા એમ કહેવાનું ન ચૂક્યાં કે, ‘તમારા બાપુજી ઈમાન અને સન્માનની વાતો તો ખૂબ કરે છે પરંતુ એક તવાયફને કરેલો વાયદો પણ તે નિભાવી ન શક્યા.’
વાયદા પ્રમાણે તેઓ પોતે ન આવ્યા એટલે તેઓ ફાળાની અડધી રકમના જ હકદાર છે.
ગૌહર જાનનું જીવન
ગૌહર જાન પૂર્વ ભારતનાં એક અનન્ય પ્રતિભા હતાં જેમના પર પહેલાં બનારસ અને પછી કલકત્તાના શ્રીમંતો ન્યોચ્છાવર થતા રહ્યા. નસીબજોગે ગૌહર જાનનાં જીવનકાળમાં રેકર્ડ ઉદ્યોગનો ભારતમાં પ્રવેશ થઈ ગયો હતો.
આર્મેનિયન પિતા અને વ્યવસાયે ગાયિકા માતાનાં દીકરી ગૌહરનું જીવન તે સમયના રાજવી સમાજના માહોલ અને આત્મનિર્ભર તવાયફોનાં શોષણની દુઃખભરી દાસ્તાન છે.
એ મુસ્લિમ જે હતો ‘ઇતિહાસનો સૌથી અમીર માણસ’
તે સમયનો ધનવાન સમાજ આ ગાયિકાઓ પર રૂપિયા તો ખૂબ લૂંટાવતા હતા, પરંતુ મોટામાં મોટી ગાયિકાને રાજ સમાજમાં ન તો પરિણીતાનો દરજ્જો મળતો હતો અને ન સન્માનિત પુરુષ કલાકારો જેવો વ્યવહાર મળતો.
પ્રતિભાની સાથે ગૌહરમાં એક દુર્લભ વ્યાવહારિકતા પણ હતી. તેના કારણે ગીત તથા રેકોર્ડિંગ ઉદ્યોગના પ્રારંભિક દિવસોમાં જ તેઓ એક જાણીતા કરોડપતિ મહિલા બન્યાં, જે અંગ્રેજ ઑફિસર્સને પણ ઠસ્સા સાથે મળતાં અને તેમનો પહેરવેશ તેમજ ઘરેણાં તત્કાલીન રાણીઓને માત આપતાં હતાં.
તેમણે પોતાની પૂંજીનું રોકાણ પ્રોપર્ટી ખરીદવામાં કર્યું. ગૌહરનાં અનેક કોઠા કલકત્તામાં હતા.
પ્રૌઢાવસ્થામાં તેઓ પોતાની ઉંમરથી અડધી ઉંમરના એક પઠાણના પ્રેમમાં પડ્યાં હતાં, પરંતુ વૈવાહિક સુખ તેમના નસીબમાં ન હતું. પતિ સાથે કડવાશ વધતાં બન્ને અલગ થઈ ગયાં.
પતિની નજર તેમની મિલકત પર હતી જે તેમણે પોતાના નામે કરાવી લીધી હતી.
ગૌહર જાન કચેરી સુધી ગયાં અને ગૌહરની વિરાસત તેમજ મિલકત કેસ દરમિયાન વકીલોની ભેટ ચઢી ગઈ.
પોતાના અંતિમ દિવસો દરમિયાન એકલાં પડી ચૂકેલાં આ મહાન ગાયિકા લગભગ અચર્ચિત પરિસ્થિતિમાં દક્ષિણ ભારત જવા મજબૂર થયાં અને ત્યાં જ તેઓ દિવંગત થઈ ગયાં.
