ભવિષ્ય પુરાણમાં જણાવ્યા છે કે આ વ્રતને દિવસે જે ભક્ત સૂર્ય દેવની પૂજા કરે છે અને સપ્તમીના ઉદયગામી સૂર્યને અર્ધ્ય અર્પિત કરે છે એને ઘણા જન્મોના પાપ કપાઈ જાય છે અને મૃત્યૂ પછી સૂર્ય લોકમાં વર્ષો સુધી સુખ અને ભોગની પ્રાપ્તિ થાય છે.

પુરાણમાં જણાવ્યા છેકે સૂર્યને અર્ધ્ય આપ્યા પછી ઘણા નિયમ છે. પુણ્ય લાભ માટે આ નિયમોના પાલન કરતા અર્ધ્ય આપવા જોઈએ. ભવિષ્ય પુરાણ કહે છે કે માણદ ભગવાન સૂર્યને ફલથી યુક્ત અર્ધ્ય આપે છે ત્યાં બધા લોકોમાં પૂજિત થાય છે એને માન સમ્માનની પ્રાપ્તિ થાય છે. યશના લાભ મળે છે.

સૂર્ય દેવને અષ્ટાંગ અર્ધ્ય અત્યંત પ્રિય છે. જે આ રીતે અર્ધ્ય આપે છે . એને હજાર વર્ષ સૂર્ય લોકમાં સ્થાન મળે છે.અષ્ટાંગમાં જળ દૂધ, કુશાના અગ્ર ભાગ, ઘી ,દહી, મધ, લાલ કનેરના ફૂલ અને લાલ ચંદન અર્ધ્ય આપે છે.

સૂર્ય દેવને અર્ધ્ય આપવા માટે માટીના વાસણ અને બાંસના ડાલેના પ્રયોગ કરે છે. એનાથી અર્ધ્ય આપતા પર સામાન્ય અર્ધ્યથી સૌ ગણુ પુણ્ય પ્રાપ્ત થાય છે.

માટી અને બાંસના સૌ ગણું વધારે ફળ તાંબા પાત્રથી અર્ધ્ય આપતા મળે છે. તાંબાના સ્થાને કમળ અને પલાશના પાનના પણ પ્રયોગ કરાય છે.

તાંબાના લાખ ગણું ચાંદીના પાત્રથી અર્ધ્ય આપતા પુણ્ય મળે છે. આ રીતે સોનાના વાસણથી અર્ધ્ય આપતા કરોડ ગણા પુણ્યની પ્રાપ્તિ થાય છે. ભવિષ્ય પુરાણમાં કહ્યું છે કે જે માણસ સૂર્ય દેવને તાલપ અત્રના પંખા સમર્પિત કરે છે એ દસ હજાર વર્ષ સૂર્ય લોકમાં રહેવાના અધિકારી બની જાય છે.

છઠ પર્વ પ્રત્યે લોકોની આસ્થા અને વિશ્વાસના નજારો તમે આખી દુનિયામાં જોઈ શકો છો . આસ-પાસ નદી કે તાલાબ નહી હોતા લોકો ઘરના ધાબા પર ટબ નાખી કે આંગણામાં ખાડો ખોદી પાણી ભરે છે અને સૂર્યને અર્ધ્ય આપે છે . આ પર્વના પ્રયે એવી આસ્થા આમ જ નહી .

છઠ પર્વના વિશે માન્યતા છે કે આ પર્વ સંતાન સુખ આપે છે. આ પર્વની એક કથા મુજબ સૂર્યની બહેન ષ્ષ્ઠી દેવી નવજાત બાળકોની રક્ષા કરે છે આથી માતાઓ આ પર્વને એમની સંતાનની લાંબી ઉમ્ર અને ઉન્નતિ માટે વ્રત રાખે છે.

છ્ઠ પર્વના સંબંધ સૂર્યથી પણ છે. સૂર્યને પ્રાણના કારક અને બ્રહ્માણમાં પ્રત્યક્ષ દેવતા ગણાય છે . એમની ઉર્જાથી મૌસમ ચક્ર ચાલે છે અને ફસલો પૈદા થાય છે આથી એમની પ્રસન્નતા સૃષ્ટિને બનાવી રાખવા માટે જરૂરી છે આથી છ્ઠ પર્વ પર સૂર્યની પૂજા હોય છે.

છ્ઠ પર્વને લઈને એવી માન્યતા છે કે આ પર્વમાં સૂર્ય ષષ્ઠી માતાથી જે પણ માંગો એ વર્ષ ભરમાં પૂરી થાય છે આથી શ્રદ્ધાળુ નિયમ નિષ્ઠાથી આ વ્રત રાખે છે.

એવી માન્યતા છે કે અંગરાજ કર્ણ જે સૂર્યના પુત્ર અને ભક્ત હતા એણે સૂર્યપાસના અને છ્ઠ વ્રતથી રાજ્ય અને વૈભવ મેળવ્યા એણે છ્ઠ વ્રતની પરંપરા શરૂ કરી એવી માન્યતા છે કે આ વ્રત થી પુરૂષોને બળ અને વૈભવની પ્રાપ્તિ થાય છે આથી પુરૂષ પણ અ અ વ્રત રાખે છે.
