यति...आम बात है- इसी तरह यति या हिममानव और मानव की मुलाकातों के कई किस्से हिमालय पर्वतों के अनुभवी बूढ़े सुनाया करते हैं। भूटान में कुछ बुजुर्ग ऐसे हैं, जिनके लिए हिममानव कोई आश्चर्य की बात नहीं है। उनके मुताबित, उनके जमाने में हिममानव दिखना सामान्य बात थी। 77 साल के सोनम दोरजी का कहना है कि यति का इतिहास सदियों पुराना है और वे आज भी मौजूद हैं।

यति मानव : ऋग्वेद के दो परिच्छेदों में बतलाया गया है कि यदि का संबंध भृगुओं से है। अर्थात वे भृगु कुल से संबंध रखते हैं। पुराणों अनुसार यह एक प्राचीन कुल का नाम है। यजुर्वेद की संहिता अनुसार यति नाम की एक मानव जाती है। यति का उल्लेख भृगु के साथ सामवेद में भी मिलता है। भोजपुरी और अवधी भाषा में हनुमानजी को जति कहा जाता है जो कि यति का ही बिगड़ा रूप जान पड़ता है।

रामायण से जुड़ी कहानी अनुसार नेपाल में यति को राक्षस भी कहा जाता है। कुछ गंथों के मुताबिक कुछ नेपाली और हिमालय की तराई के इलाकों में राम और सीता के बारे में प्रचलित लोक कविताओं और गीतों में भी कई जगह यति का उल्लेख किया गया है। यति का अर्थ संयम, नियंत्रण और मार्गदर्शन होता है।
माना जाता है कि यह हमेशा घने जंगलों और पहाड़ों में रहता है। जितने लोगों ने भी इसे देखा है वह इसे सामान्य आदमी से लंबा, पूरा शरीर बालों से भरा हुआ, ताकतवर और अजीब सी गंध लिए, बड़े पैर और चीखने वाला बताते हैं। येति या हिममानव बंदर की तरह एक प्राणी होता है।

पहली बार चर्चा में - हिममानव या यति का सबसे पहला उल्लेख एक पर्वतारोही बी.एच. होजसन ने किया था। अपने हिमालय अभियान के अनुभवों में उन्होंने लिखा था कि सन् 1832 में उत्तरी नेपाल के पहाड़ी इलाके में उनके गाइड ने लंबे बालों वाले एक विशालकाय प्राणी को देखने की बात कही। होजसन ने साफ लिखा है कि उन्होंने कुछ नहीं देखा, लेकिन इस घटना का जिक्र करते हुए उन्होंने अनजान प्राणी को यति नाम दिया। इसके बाद यति के देखे जाने और पदचिह्नों की पहचान किए जाने का लंबा इतिहास रहा है। कई पर्वतारोहियों ने अपनी किताबों में इसका उल्लेख किया है। हिमालय क्षेत्र ही नहीं, दुनिया के बाकी हिस्सों से भी ऐसी खबरें आती रहीं। हालांकि कोई भी अपनी बात साबित करने के लिए पुख्ता सबूत नहीं दे सका है।

कैसा है हिममानव? : सन् 1925 में पेशेवर फोटोग्राफर तथा रायल जिओग्राफिकल सोसायटी के सदस्य एम.ए. टोमबाजी ने लिखा कि उन्होंने जेमू ग्लेशियर (कंगचनजंघा पर्वत माला) के पास 15,000 फुट की ऊँचाई पर बालों से ढ़का एक विशालकाय प्राणी देखा है। टोमबाजी ने स्पष्ट रूप लिखा है कि उन्होंने उसे लगभग 200 मीटर दूरी से देखा। वे एक मिनट तक उसे निहारते रहे। उसकी शारीरिक बनावट पूरी तरह से इंसानी थी, लेकिन शरीर पर बहुत अधिक मात्रा में बाल थे। उसके तन पर कपड़े जैसी कोई चीज नहीं थी।
दिसंबर 2007 में अमेरिका के एक टीवी शो प्रस्तुतकर्ता जोशुआ गेट्स और उनकी टीम ने भी यति के स्पष्ट पदचिह्न देखने का दावा किया। उन्होंने बताया कि प्रत्येक पदचिह्न की लंबाई 33 से.मी. थी।
बालों की जाँच- 19 मार्च 1954 को अंग्रेजी अखबार ‘डेली मेल’ में एक लेख प्रकाशित हुआ, जिसमें इस मसले पर वैज्ञानिक नजरिए से प्रकाश डाला गया था। असल में वहाँ के प्रोफेसर फ्रेडरिक वुड जोन्स ने यति के बालों के माइक्रोफोटोग्राफ का परीक्षण किया था। उनकी तुलना भालू और दूसरे पहाड़ी जानवरों के बालों से की गई, लेकिन इस निष्कर्ष पर नहीं पहुँचा जा सका कि आखिर ये बाल किसके हैं।
बहरहाल यह तो तय है कि आज तकनीक जितनी भी विकसित हो जाए पर प्रकृति के कुछ रहस्यों से पर्दा उठना अभी बाकी है। अभी तक दर्जनों लोगों ने यति देखने के दावे किए हैं, लेकिन कोई भी पुख्ता सबूत पेश नहीं कर पाया है और विज्ञान ऐसे किसी सबूत के बिना यति के अस्तित्व पर मुहर नहीं लगा सकता है। इसको लेकर वैज्ञानिकों में भी मतभेद है। कुछ कह रहे हैं कि प्रमाण इतने नहीं हैं कि यति का होना घोषित कर दिया जाए। फिर भी विज्ञान के जानकारों का एक वर्ग ऐसा है, जो कह रहा है कि कुछ तो है।
अमेरिका के पोकाटेलो में इदाहो विश्वविद्यालय में प्रोफेसर जेफ मेलड्रम का कहना है कि मैंने इस संबंध में मौजूदा सभी वैज्ञानिक प्रमाणों का अध्ययन किया है और इस नतीजे पर पहुँचा हूँ कि इस सृष्टि में कोई प्राणी ऐसा जरूर है, जिसकी पहचान होना बाकी है।
अबूझ पहेली बनी सृष्टि की इस रचना पर कई किताबें लिखी गई हैं, वीडियो तथा फिल्में बनाई जा चुकी हैं। इसे आमतौर पर एक घृणित शोमैन के रूप में दिखाया गया है। ‘द एबोमिनेबल शोमैन’, ‘डाक्टर हू’, ‘बग्स बनी कार्टून’, ‘देट्स शो घोस्ट’, ‘द माइटी बुश’, ‘काल आफ ए यति’ जैसे टीवी शो में यति को एक शैतान के रूप दिखाया गया है। बालीवुड फिल्म ‘अजूबा कुदरत का’ में भी यति को दिखाया गया है। यह ऐसी लड़की की कहानी है, जो यति को दिल दे बैठती है। विदेशों में भी कई फिल्में बन चुकी हैं।
इनके अस्तित्व को लेकर जारी बहस के बीच वैज्ञानिक दृष्टिकोण से भी हकीकत का पता लगाने के प्रयास किए जा रहे हैं। जुटाए गए सबूतों की फोरेंसिक जाँच की जा रही है। इस बीच जाने-अनजाने यह अनजान ‘प्रजाति’ आज मशहूर हो गई है। इन्हें किताबों, फिल्मों, बच्चों की कामिक्स में तो स्थान मिल ही गया है, इस पर वीडियो गेम्स भी बनाए जा रहे हैं।
