इरावन से किन्नर करते हैं विवाह, जिसने महाभारत में मचा दिया था कोहराम

वर्तमान में कुछ क्षेत्रों में किन्नरों द्वारा इरावन की पूजा की जाती है। वर्ष में एक दिन ऐसा भी आता जब किन्नर रंग-बिरंगी साड़ियां पहन कर और अपने जूड़े को चमेली के फूलों से सजाकर इरावन से शादी करती है। हालांकि यह विवाह मात्र एक दिन के लिए होता है। अगले दिन इरावन देवता की मौत के साथ ही उनका वैवाहिक जीवन खत्म हो जाता है। मान्यता है कि इसी दिन इरावन की महाभारत के युद्ध में मौत हो गई थी।

इसकी याद में हजारों किन्नर तमिलनाडु के कूवागम गांव में एकत्रित होते हैं। जहां वे अपनी जिंदगी के सबसे महत्वपूर्ण दिन वार्षिक ‘शादी’ समारोह में शिरकत करते हैं। पौराणिक मान्यता अनुसार भगवान कृष्ण ने औरत का रूप धारण कर नाग राजकुमार इरावन से शादी की थी। विल्लूपुरम जिले के इस गांव में इरावन की पूजा कूथांदवार के रूप में होती है। हजारों किन्नर इरावन की दुल्हन के रूप में शादी समारोह में शिरकत करती हैं और मंदिर के पुजारी ने उनकी गर्दन में कलावा बांधवाती हैं।

मान्यता अनुसार महाभारत युद्ध में एक समय ऐसा आता है जब पांडवों को अपनी जीत के लिए मां काली के चरणों में स्वेच्छिकरूप से किसी पुरुष की बलि हेतु एक राजकुमार की जरूरत पड़ती है। जब कोई भी राजकुमार आगे नहीं आता है तो इरावन खुद को इसके लिए प्रस्तुत कर देता है, लेकिन वह इसके साथ ही एक शर्त भी रख देता है कि वह अविवाहित नहीं मरेगा। इस शर्त के कारण यह संकट उत्पन्न हो जाता है कि यदि किसी राजा की बेटी या सामान्य स्त्री से उसका विवाह किया जाता है कि वह तुरंत ही विधवा हो जाएगा। ऐसे में कोई भी पिता इरावन से अपनी बेटी के विवाह के लिए तैयार नहीं होता है। तब भगवान कृष्ण स्वयं मोहिनी रूप में इरावन से विवाह करते हैं। इसके बाद इरावन अपने हाथों से अपना शीश मां काली के चरणों में अर्पित कर देता है। इरावन की मृत्यु के पश्चात कृष्ण उसी मोहिनी रूप में काफी देर तक उसकी मृत्यु का विलाप भी करते हैं। अब चुकी कृष्ण पुरुष होते हुए स्त्री रूप में इरावन से शादी रचाते हैं इसलिए किन्नर, जोकि स्त्री रूप में पुरुष माने जाते हैं, वह भी इरावन से एक रात की शादी रचाते हैं और उन्हें अपना आराध्य देव मानते हैं। लेकिन यह कथा कितनी सच है यह कोई नहीं जानता, क्योंकि महाभारत में तो इरावन की मौत के राज कुछ और ही है।

इरावन अर्जुन का पुत्र था। इसका जन्म विशेषकाल परिस्थिति में हुआ था। दरअसल, एक बार अर्जुन ने युधिष्ठिर और द्रौपदी को एकांत में देखकर वैवाहिक नियम भंग कर दिया था जिसके चलते उन्होंने स्वेच्छापूर्वक एक वर्ष के लिए तीर्थ भ्रमण स्वीकार कर इंद्रप्रस्थ छोड़ दिया। एक दिन वे हरिद्वार में स्नान कर रहे थे कि तभी नागराज कौरव्‍य की पुत्री नागकन्या उलूपी ने उन्हें देखा और वह उन पर मोहित हो गई। ऐसे में वह उन्हें खींचकर अपने नागलोक में ले गई और उसके अनुरोध करने पर अर्जुन को उससे विवाह करना पड़ा।

अर्जुन ने नागराज के घर में ही वह रात्रि व्‍यतीत की। फिर सूर्योदय होने पर उलूपी के साथ अर्जुन नागलोक से ऊपर को उठे और फिर से हरिद्वार (गंगाद्वार) में गंगा के तट पर आ पहुंचे। उलूपी उन्‍हे वहां छोड़कर पुन: अपने घर को लौट गई। जाते समय उसने अर्जुन को यह वर दिया कि आप जल में सर्वत्र अजेय होंगे और सभी जलचर आपके वश में रहेंगे। 

अर्जुन और नागकन्या उलूपी के मिलन से अर्जुन को एक वीरवार पुत्र मिला जिसका नाम इरावान रखा गया। भीष्म पर्व के 90वें अध्याय में संजय धृतराष्ट्र को इरावान का परिचय देते हुए बताते हैं कि इरावान नागराज कौरव्य की पुत्री उलूपी के गर्भ से अर्जुन द्वारा उत्पन्न किया गया था। नागराज की वह पुत्री उलूपी संतानहीन थी। उसके मनोनीत पति को गरूड़ ने मार डाला था, जिससे वह अत्यंत दीन एवं दयनीय हो रही थी। ऐरावतवंशी कौरव्य नाग ने उसे अर्जुन को अर्पित किया और अर्जुन ने उस नागकन्या को भार्या रूप में ग्रहण किया था। इस प्रकार अर्जुन पुत्र उत्पन्न हुआ था। 

इरावान सदा मातृकुल में रहा। वह नागलोक में ही माता उलूपी द्वारा पाल-पोसकर बड़ा किया गया और सब प्रकार से वहीं उसकी रक्षा की गयी थी। इरावान भी अपने पिता अर्जुन की भांति रूपवान, बलवान, गुणवान और सत्य पराक्रमी था।

महाभारत के वन पर्व के अध्याय 36 के अनुसार 12 वर्षीय वनवास के समय युधिष्ठिर के पास वेदव्यासजी आए और उन्होंने युधिष्ठिर को इंद्र से मिलाने वाली प्रतिस्मृति नामक योगविद्या प्रदान की। उन्होंने युधिष्ठिर से अपने अनुज अर्जुन को यह विद्या देने और अर्जुन को दिव्यास्त्रों की प्राप्ति के लिए देवलोक भेजने को कहा।

अर्जुन ने युधिष्ठिर से यह विद्या प्राप्त कर हिमालय और गंधमादन पर्वत को लांघकर हिमालय के पृष्ठभाग में स्थित इंद्रकील पर्वत पर पहुँचकर इंद्र के दर्शन किए। इसी अवधि में अर्जुन ने भगवान् शंकर का तप कर उनसे पाशुपातास्त्र प्राप्त किया। तदनंतर दिक्पाल वरुण, कुबेर, यम और इंद्र वहाँ पधारे। वरुण, कुबेर और यम ने अर्जुन को अपने दिव्यास्त्र प्रदान किए। तदनंतर अर्जुन इंद्रलोक गए।

भीष्म पर्व के 90वें अध्याय के अनुसार इरावान ने जब सुना कि मेरे पिता अर्जुन इस समय इंद्रलोक गए हुए है, तब वह भी शीघ्र ही इंद्रलोक जा पहुंचा। उस वीर ने अपने पिता के पास पहुंचकर उन्हें प्रणाम किया और विनयपूर्वक हाथ जोड़ महामना अर्जुन के समक्ष अपना परिचय देते हुए बोला- 'प्रभो! मैं आपका ही पुत्र इरावान हूं।' 

यह जानकर अर्जुन ने प्रेमपूर्वक अपने पुत्र को अपना सब कार्य बताते हुए कहा- 'शक्तिशाली पुत्र! युद्ध के अवसर पर तुम हम लोगों को सहायता देना।' तब बहुत अच्छा कहकर इरावान चला गया और महाभारत का युद्ध आरंभ होने पर अपने पिता अर्जुन के पास आ गया।

महाभारत के भीष्म पर्व के 83वें अध्‍याय के अनुसार महाभारत के युद्ध के सातवें दिन इरावान का अवंती के राजकुमार विंद और अनुविंद से अत्यंत भयंकर युद्ध हुआ। इरावान ने दोनों भाइयों से एक साथ युद्ध करते हुए अपने पराक्रम से दोनों को पराजित कर दिया और फिर कौरव सेना का संहार आरंभ कर दिया।

भीष्म पर्व के 91वें अध्याय के अनुसार आठवें दिन जब सुबलपुत्र शकुनि और कृतवर्मा ने पांडवों की सेना पर आक्रमण किया, तब अनेक सुंदर घोड़े और बहुत बड़ी सेना द्वारा सब ओर से घिरे हुए शत्रुओं को संताप देने वाले अर्जुन के बलवान पुत्र इरावान ने हर्ष में भरकर रणभूमि में कौरवों की सेना पर आक्रमण कर प्रत्युत्तर दिया। 

इरावान द्वारा किए गए इस अत्यंत भयानक युद्ध में कौरवों की घुड़सवार सेना नष्ट हो गयी।

तब शकुनि के छहों पुत्रों ने इरावान को चारों ओर घेर लिया। इरावान ने अकेले ही लंबे समय तक इन छहों से वीरतापूर्वक युद्ध कर उन सबका वध कर डाला। यह देख दुर्योधन भयभीत हो उठा और वह भागा हुआ राक्षस ऋष्यश्रृंग के पुत्र अलम्बुष के पास गया, जो पूर्वकाल में किए गए बकासुर वध के कारण भीमसेन का शत्रु बन बैठा था। ऐसे में अल्बुष ने इरावस से युद्ध किया।

इरावान और अलम्बुष का अनेक प्रकार से माया-युद्ध हुआ। अलम्बुष राक्षस का जो जो अंग कटता, वह पुनः नए सिरे से उत्पन्न हो जाता था। युद्धस्थल में अपने शत्रु को प्रबल हुआ देख उस राक्षस ने अत्यंत भयंकर एवं विशाल रूप धारण करके अर्जुन के वीर एवं यशस्वी पुत्र इरावान को बंदी बनाने का प्रयत्न आरंभ किया। उस दुरात्मा राक्षस की माया देखकर क्रोध में भरे हुए इरावान ने भी माया का प्रयोग आरंभ किया।

उसी समय नागकन्या पुत्र इरावान के मातृकुल के नागों का समूह उसकी सहायता के लिए वहां आ पहुंचा। रणभूमि में बहुतेरे नागों से घिरे हुए इरावान ने विशाल शरीर वाले शेषनाग की भांति बहुत बड़ा रूप धारण कर लिया। तब उसने बहुत से नागों द्वारा राक्षस को आच्छादित कर दिया। तब उस राक्षसराज अलम्बुष ने कुछ सोच-विचार कर गरूड़ का रूप धारण कर लिया और समस्त नागों को भक्षण करना आरंभ किया। जब उस राक्षस ने इरावान के मातृकुल के सब नागों को भक्षण कर लिया, तब मोहित हुए इरावान को तलवार से मार डाला। इरावान के कमल और चंद्रमा के समान कांतिमान तथा कुंडल एवं मुकुट से मंडित मस्तक को काटकर राक्षस ने धरती पर गिरा दिया।

इरावान को युद्धभूमि में मारा गया देख भीमसेन का पुत्र राक्षस घटोत्कच बड़े जोर से सिंहनाद करने लगा। उसने भीषण रूप धारण कर प्रज्वलित त्रिशूल हाथ में लेकर भांति-भांति के अस्त्र-शस्त्रों से संपन्न बड़े-बड़े राक्षसों के साथ आकर कौरव सेना का संहार आरंभ कर दिया। उसने दुर्योधन और द्रोणाचार्य से भीषण युद्ध किया। घटोत्कच और भीमसेन ने भयानक युद्ध किया और क्रुद्ध भीमसेन ने उसी दिन धृतराष्ट्र के नौ पुत्रों का वध कर इरावान की मृत्यु का प्रतिशोध ले लिया।
