महाराष्ट्र के अहमदनगर जिले के कोपरगांव तालुका में शिर्डी के साईं बाबा (shirdi sai baba) का मंदिर है, जो विश्वभर में प्रसिद्ध तीर्थस्थल है। गोदावरी नदी पार करने के पश्चात मार्ग सीधा शिर्डी को जाता है। 8 मील चलने पर जब आप नीमगांव पहुंचेंगे तो वहां से शिर्डी दृष्टिगोचर होने लगती है। श्री सांईनाथ ने शिर्डी में अवतीर्ण होकर उसे पावन बनाया।
श्री साईं बाबा की जन्मतिथि, जन्म स्थान और माता-पिता का किसी को भी ज्ञान नहीं है। इस संबंध में बहुत छानबीन की गई। बाबा से तथा अन्य लोगों से भी इस विषय में पूछताछ की गई, परंतु कोई संतोषप्रद उत्तर अथवा सूत्र हाथ न लग सका। वैसे साईं बाबा को कबीर का अवतार भी माना जाता है।
बाबा की एकमात्र प्रामाणिक जीवन कथा 'श्री सांई सत्चरित' है जिसे श्री अन्ना साहेब दाभोलकर ने सन् 1914 में लिपिबद्ध किया। ऐसा विश्वास किया जाता है कि सन् 1835 में महाराष्ट्र के परभणी जिले के पाथरी गांव में साईं बाबा का जन्म भुसारी परिवार में हुआ था। (सत्य साईं बाबा ने बाबा का जन्म 27 सितंबर 1830 को पाथरी गांव में बताया है।)
इसके पश्चात 1854 में वे शिर्डी में ग्रामवासियों को एक नीम के पेड़ के नीचे बैठे दिखाई दिए। अनुमान है कि सन् 1835 से लेकर 1846 तक पूरे 12 वर्ष तक बाबा अपने पहले गुरु रोशनशाह फकीर के घर रहे। 1846 से 1854 तक बाबा बैंकुशा के आश्रम में रहे।
सन् 1854 में वे पहली बार नीम के वृक्ष के तले बैठे हुए दिखाई दिए। कुछ समय बाद बाबा शिर्डी छोड़कर किसी अज्ञात जगह पर चले गए और 4 वर्ष बाद 1858 में लौटकर चांद पाटिल के संबंधी की शादी में बारात के साथ फिर शिर्डी आए।

इस बार वे खंडोबा के मंदिर के सामने ठहरे थे। इसके बाद के 60 वर्षों 1858 से 1918 तक बाबा शिर्डी में अपनी लीलाओं को करते रहे और अंत तक यहीं रहे। महाराष्ट्र के अहमदनगर जिले में गोदावरी नदी के ऐसे तट बड़े ही भाग्यशाली हैं जिन पर अनेक संतों ने जन्म लिया और अनेक ने वहां आश्रय पाया।
आज 'साईं बाबा की शिर्डी' के नाम से दुनियाभर में इसे जाना जाता है। साईं बाबा पर यह विश्वास जाति-धर्म व राज्यों से परे देशों की सीमा लांघ चुका है। यही वजह है कि 'बाबा की शिर्डी' में भक्तों का मेला हमेशा लगा रहता है जिसकी तादाद प्रतिदिन जहां 30,000 के करीब होती है, वहीं गुरुवार व रविवार को यह संख्या दुगनी हो जाती है।
इसी तरह साईं बाबा के प्रति आस्था और विश्वास के चलते रामनवमी, गुरुपूर्णिमा और विजयादशमी पर जहां 2-3 लाख लोग दर्शन को आते हैं, वहीं सालभर में लगभग 1 करोड़ से अधिक भक्त यहां हाजिरी लगा जाते हैं।
लगभग 150 साल पहले एक युवा फकीर शिर्डी की खंडहरनुमा मस्जिद में डेरा डालकर 4 घरों की भिक्षा से गुजर-बसर करने लगा। लोगों ने उसे 'साईं बाबा' के नाम से पुकारा। उसकी दी जड़ी-बूटियों व अंगारे से लोग भले-चंगे होने लगे। इससे लोगों का विश्वास बाबा में बढ़ता गया और साईं बाबा का नाम आहिस्ता-आहिस्ता दुनियाभर में फैल गया, जो आज लोगों की श्रद्धा का केंद्र है।
बाबा के भक्तों में सभी जाति-धर्म-पंथ के लोग शामिल हैं। जहां हिन्दू बाबा के चरणों में हार-फूल चढ़ाते, समाधि पर दूब रख अभिषेक करते हैं, वहीं मुस्लिम बाबा की समाधि पर चादर चढ़ा सब्जा चढ़ाते हैं। कुल मिलाकर बाबा की शिर्डी सर्वधर्म समभाव के धार्मिक सह-अस्तित्व का महत्वपूर्ण स्थान है, लेकिन यहां आने वाले भक्त तो इन सबके परे केवल मन में उनके प्रति श्रद्धा और विश्वास के चलते खिंचे चले आते हैं।
साईं बाबा ने अपनी जिंदगी में समाज को दो अहम संदेश दिए हैं- 'सबका मालिक एक' और 'श्रद्धा और सबूरी'। साईं बाबा के इर्द-गिर्द के तमाम चमत्कारों से परे केवल उनके संदेशों पर ही गौर करें तो पाएंगे कि बाबा के कार्य और संदेश जनकल्याणकारी साबित हुए हैं।
