परंपरा के अनुसार हर वर्ष 25 दिसंबर को ईसा मसीह के जन्मदिवस को क्रिसमस के रूप में मनाया जाता है। कहते हैं कि जीसस का जन्म 6 ईसा पूर्व हुआ था। ईसाई धर्म में क्रिसमस को सबसे बड़ा पर्व माना जाता है। क्रिसमस से जुड़े कई रस्मों रिवाज भी हैं, जो दुनियाभर में सदियों से मनाए जाते हैं आओ जानते हैं क्रिसमस से जुड़े ऐसे ही 10 खास रिवाजों के बारे में।
1. गोशाला : क्रिसमस के दिन चर्च में ईसा के जन्म की झांकी बनाई जाती है जिसमें गौशाला बनाकर उसमें बालक येशु को मदर मैरी के साथ दर्शाया जाता है। ऐसी मान्यता है कि ईसा मसीह का जन्म बेथलहेम की एक गौशाला में हुआ था। हालांकि कुछ लोगों का मानना था कि वो घोड़ो या भेड़ का अस्तबल था और कुछ मानते हैं कि वो एक गुफा थी।
2. क्रिसमस ट्री : क्रिसमय पर क्रिसमय ट्री बानाने का भी बहुत महत्व है। एक जर्मन किंवदंती भी प्रचलित है कि यीशु का जन्म हुआ तो वहां चर रहे पशुओं ने उन्हें प्रणाम किया और देखते ही देखते जंगल के सारे वृक्ष सदाबहार हरी पत्तियों से लद गए। बस, तभी से क्रिसमस ट्री को ईसाई धर्म का परंपरागत प्रतीक माना जाने लगा। सदाबहार क्रिसमस वृक्ष डगलस, बालसम या फर का पौधा होता है जिस पर क्रिसमस के दिन बहुत सजावट की जाती है। इसे देवदार का वृक्ष भी बाना जाता है। जो भी हो इस ट्री को बिजली की लड़ियों से सजाकर सुंदर सा बनाया जाता है। यह भी कहा जाता है कि प्रचलित मान्यता अनुसार एक बार संत बोनिफेस जर्मनी में यात्राएं करते हुए वे एक ओक वृक्ष के नीचे विश्राम कर रहे थे, जहां गैर ईसाई अपने देवताओं की संतुष्टि के लिए लोगों की बलि देते थे। संत बोनिफेस ने वह वृक्ष काट डाला और उसके स्थान पर फर का वृक्ष लगाया। तभी से अपने धार्मिक संदेशों के लिए संत बोनिफेस फर के प्रतीक का प्रयोग करने लगे थे। रशिया (रूस) के लोग 7 जनवरी को क्रिसमय मनाते हैं। इस दौरान वे देवदार के लंबे-लंबे वृक्षों को सजाते हैं।
आधुनिक युग में क्रिसमस ट्री की शुरुआत पश्चिम जर्मनी में हुई। मध्यकाल में एक लोकप्रिय नाटक के मंचन के दौरान ईडन गार्डन को दिखाने के लिए फर के पौधों का प्रयोग किया गया जिस पर सेब लटकाए गए। इस पेड़ को स्वर्ग वृक्ष का प्रतीक दिखाया गया था। ज्यादातर लोग इस मौके पर ऐसे पेड़ खरीदते हैं जो सदाबहार हों और ऐसे पेड़ों को ही क्रिसमस ट्री में बदला जाता है।

3. सैंटा क्लॉज : मान्यता अनुसार सैंटा क्रिसमस के दिन सीधा स्वर्ग से धरती पर आते हैं और वे बच्चों के लिए टॉफियां, चॉकलेट, फल, खिलौने व अन्य उपहार बांटकर वापस स्वर्ग में चले जाते हैं। कई लोग सैंटा क्लॉज को एक कल्पित पात्र मानते हैं और कई लोगों का मानना है कि सैंटा क्लॉज चौथी शताब्दी में मायरा के निकट एक शहर में जन्मे थे। उनका नाम निकोलस था। चूंकि कैथोलिक चर्च ने उन्हें 'संत' का ओहदा दिया था, इसलिए उन्हें 'सैंटा क्लॉज' कहा जाने लगा। जो आज 'सैंटा क्लॉज' के नाम से मशहूर है। संत निकोलस की याद में कुछ जगहों पर हर साल 6 दिसंबर को 'संत निकोलस दिवस' भी मनाया जाता है। कई पश्चिमी ईसाई देशों में यह मान्यता है कि सांता क्रिसमस की पूर्व संध्या, यानि 24 दिसम्बर की शाम या देर रात के समय के दौरान अच्छे बच्चों के घरों में आकर उन्हें उपहार देता है। सान्ता क्लोज खासतौर से क्रिसमस पर बच्चों को खिलौने और तोहफे बांटने ही वे उत्तरी ध्रुव पर आते हैं बाकि का समय वे लेप लैन्ड, फीनलैन्ड में रहते हैं। परंपरा से अब सिर्फ सांता ही उपहार नहीं देते हैं बल्कि क्रिसमय पर लोग एक दूसरे को उपहार देते हैं।
4. जिंगल बेल : जिंगल बेल के गाने को ईसाई धर्म में क्रिसमस से जोड़ दिया गया है, लेकिन कुछ लोग यह मानते हैं कि यह क्रिसमस सॉग्न है ही नहीं। यह थैंक्सगिविंग सॉग्न है जिसे 1850 में जेम्स पियरपॉन्ट ने 'वन हॉर्स ओपन स्लेई' शीर्षक से लिखा था। जेम्स पियरपॉन्ट ने यह गीत ऑर्डवे के संगीत ग्रुप के लिए लिखा गया था और सन 1857 में इसे पहली बार आम दर्शकों के सामने गाया गया था। पियरपॉन्ट जार्जिया के सवाना में म्यूजिक डायरेक्टर थे। पियरपॉन्ट की मौत से 3 साल पहले यानी 1890 तक यह क्रिसमस का हिट गीत बन गया था। रिलीज के दो साल बाद इसका शीर्षक बदल कर 'जिंगल बेल्स' कर दिया गया। जो भी हो जिंगल बेल के बगैर क्रिसमस अधूरा है। आजकल हर चर्च, गली मोहल्ले या शॉपिंग मॉल में आपको क्रिसमस पर जिंगल बेल जिंगल बेल सांग सुनाई देगा।
5. क्रिसमस कार्ड : कहते हैं कि सर्वप्रथम क्रिसमस कार्ड विलियम एंगले द्वारा सन् 1842 में अपने दोस्तों को भेजा था। कहते हैं कि इस कार्ड में एक शाही परिवार की तस्वीर थी, लोग अपने मित्रों के स्वास्थ्य के लिए शुभकामनाएं देते हुए दिखाए गए थे और उस पर लिखा था 'विलियम एंगले के दोस्तों का क्रिसमस शुभ हो।' उस जमाने में चूंकि यह नई बात थी, इसलिए यह कार्ड महारानी विक्टोरिया को दिखाया गया। इससे खुश होकर उन्होंने अपने चित्रकार डोबसन को बुलाकर शाही क्रिसमस कार्ड बनवाने के लिए कहा और तब से क्रिसमस कार्ड की शुरुआत हो गई।
5. स्वादिष्ट पकवान : वैसे तो हर देश में अलग तरह के पकवान बनाए जाते हैं। कई पश्चिम देशों में स्मोक्ड टर्की, फ्रुअ केक, विगिल्ला, जेली पुडिंग, टुररॉन आदि को बनाना पसंद किया जाता है। भारत में भी कई तरह के स्वादिष्ट पकवान बनाए जाते हैं। क्रिसमस पर हर देश में अलग परम्परागत भोजन भी बनता है। कुछ लोग दूध और कुकीज के रुप में सैंटा के लिये भोजन रखते हैं।
6. रिंगिंग बेल्स : क्रिसमस के दिन घंटी को बजाने का भी रिवाज है जिसे रिंगिंग बेल कते हैं। यह बेल सदियों में सूर्य के लिए भी बजाई जाती है और खुशियों के लिए भी।
7. प्रार्थना : इस दिन चर्च में विशेष तौर पर सामूहिक प्रार्थना भी की जाती है। इस दिन लोग चर्च जाते हैं और क्रिसमस कैरोल (धार्मिक गीत) गाते हैं।
8. मोजे लटकाना : क्रिसमस के त्योहार में खिड़कियों में मोजा लटकाने की परंपरा का पालन आजकल कम ही किया जाता है। संत निकोलस के काल में बच्चे मौजे लटका देते थे ताकि सैंटा उसमें टॉफियां या तोहफे रख सके। हलांकि आज भी कई जगहों पर यह किया जाता है ताकि सैंटा क्लॉज़ आ सकें और उनमें अपने उपहार डाल सकें।
9. नए वस्त्र : इस दिन लाल और हरे रंग का अत्यधिक उपयोग होता है क्योंकि लाल रंग जामुन का होता है और यह ईसा मसीह के खून का प्रतीक भी है। इसमें हरा रंग सदाबहार परंपरा का प्रतीक है।
10. पिकनिक : क्रिसमय के लिए कई जगहों पर कम से कम 10 दिन की छुट्टियां मिलती है। इस दौरान लोग या तो अपने पैत्रक घर, नाना नानी या दादा दादी के घर जाकर क्रिसमय मनाते हैं। कुछ लोग समुद्र के तट पर जाकर क्रिसमस का आनंद लेते हैं। पूरी दुनिया में क्रिसमस के रूप में बड़ी धूम-धाम से मनाया जाता है।
