ईसा मसीह के जन्मदिन 25 दिसंबर को क्रिसमस कहा जाता है। इस पर्व पर सांता क्लॉज़ नामक एक वृद्ध बच्चों के लिए उपहार टॉफियां आदि बहुतसी वस्तुएं लाते हैं। आओ जानते हैं सैंटा क्लॉज के बारे में 25 दिलचस्प जानकारियां।
1. सैंटा क्लॉज का स्वरूप सफेद लंबी दाढ़ी, सफेद बार्डर वाले लाल रंग के कपड़े और सफेद बार्डर वाली सिर पर लंबी टोपी पहने बूढ़े बाबा जैसा है।
2. मान्यता अनुसार सैंटा क्रिसमस के दिन सीधा स्वर्ग से धरती पर आते हैं और वे बच्चों के लिए टॉफियां, चॉकलेट, फल, खिलौने व अन्य उपहार बांटकर वापस स्वर्ग में चले जाते हैं।
3. परंपरा से बच्चे सैंटा को 'क्रिसमस फादर' भी कहते हैं। ईसाई समुदाय के बच्चे में यह धारणा फैल गई है कि सैंटा एक देवदूत हैं और सच में ही उनका अस्तित्व है।
4. कई लोग सैंटा क्लॉज को एक कल्पित पात्र मानते हैं। उनका मानना है कि इस पात्र को सबसे पहले कोको काला कंपनी ने गढ़ा क्योंकि उनकी बोतल के रंग के कपड़े सैंटा क्लॉज पहनते हैं। मतलब यह कि सैंटा क्लॉज को उपभोक्तावाद ने लोकप्रिय बनाया। इससे पहले इन्हें कोई नहीं जानता था। आज के आधुनिक युग के सांता का अस्तित्व 1930 में आया। हैडन संडब्लोम नामक एक कलाकार कोका कोला की एड में सांता के रूप में दिखाई दिया।
5. कई देशों में सैंटा क्लॉज तो ईसा मसीह से भी ज्यादा प्रसिद्ध हो चले हैं। क्रिसमय पर अब ईसाई घरों में ईसा मसीह की कम परंतु सैंटा क्लॉज और क्रिसमय ट्री की चर्चा ज्यादा होती है।
6.वक्त के साथ हर धर्म के पर्व या त्योहार का रूप भी बदलता रहा है। उसमें नई नई बातें जोड़ी जाती रही है। इसी तरह अब क्रिसमय पर कई लोग सैंटा क्लॉज का भेष धारण करके बच्चों को टॉफियां बांटते हैं और अब सैंटा क्लॉज बच्चों को पत्र भी लिखते हैं।
7.जानकारों का मानना है कि योरप के ओडिन पात्र ही सैंटा क्लॉज है। ईसाई धर्म के पहले यूल नामक त्योहार पर एक आंख और दाड़ी वाला बूढ़ा ओडिन अपने आठ पैरों वाले घोड़े पर सवार होकर शिकारियों के साथ जाता था। संभवत: वहीं ओडिन अब सैंटा क्लॉज में बदल गए हैं।
8. सैंटा क्लॉज एक बर्फिले इलाके में रहते हैं और वे एक बगैर पहियों वाली स्लेस में बैठते हैं जिनके आगे दो बारहसिंघा जुते रहते हैं जो उस स्लेज को खिंचकर एक घर से दूसरे घर ले जाते हैं औ सैंटा बच्चों को तोहफे देते हैं। जबकि ईसा मसीह का जन्म वहां हुआ था जहां बर्फ का नामोनिशान तक नहीं था। बस रेगिस्तान ही रेगिस्तान।
9.ओडिन के अलावा सैंटा क्लॉज को बायजनटाइन साम्राज्य के संत निकोलस से भी जोड़कर देखा जाता है। सैंटा क्लॉज चौथी शताब्दी में मायरा के निकट एक शहर में जन्मे थे। उनका नाम निकोलस था। निकोलस को बच्चों से खास लगाव रहा। किसी भी त्योहर पर वह अपनी दौलत में से बच्चों के लिए वह खूब सारे खिलौने खरीदते और खिड़कियों से उनके घरों में फेंक देते। उनके इस कार्य के चलते उन्हें बिशप बना दिया गया था। बिशप के रूप में निकोलस की जिम्मेदारियां और बढ़ गईं। धीरे धीरे उनकी प्रसिद्धि उत्तरी योरप में भी फैलने लगी। लोग उन्हें सम्मान देने के लिए 'क्लॉज' कहना शुरू कर दिया। चूंकि कैथोलिक चर्च ने उन्हें 'संत' का ओहदा दिया था, इसलिए उन्हें 'सैंटा क्लॉज' कहा जाने लगा। जो आज 'सैंटा क्लॉज' के नाम से मशहूर है।
10. क्रिसमस के दिन कुछ ईसाई परिवारों के बच्चे रात में घरों के बाहर अपनी जुराबें सुखाते हैं। इसके पीछे मान्यता है कि सैंटा क्लॉज रात में आकर उनकी जुराबों में उनके मनपसंद उपहार भर जाएंगे।
11. संत निकोलस की याद में कुछ जगहों पर हर साल 6 दिसंबर को 'संत निकोलस दिवस' भी मनाया जाता है। हालांकि एक धारणा यह भी है कि संत निकोलस की लोकप्रियता से नाराज लोगों ने 6 दिसंबर के दिन ही उनकी हत्या करवा दी।
12. इसके अलावा कुछ विद्वान मानते हैं कि 16वीं सदी के फादर क्रिसमय और नेथरलैंड्स के सिंटरक्लाज़ को ही सैंटा क्लाज़ माना जाता है। सांता क्लॉज़ को सेंट निकोलस, फादर क्रिसमस (क्रिसमस के जनक), क्रिस क्रिंगल, या सिर्फ 'सांता' के नाम से जाना जाता है। सांता की आधुनिक आकृति की उत्पत्ति सिंटरक्लाज़ की डच आकृति से हुई। सेंट निकोलस की वेशभूषा हेगिओग्राफिकल कहानियों में मिलती है। इसी से मिलती जुलती एक कहानी बीजान्टिन और यूनानी लोककथाओं में प्रचलित है। बेसिल ऑफ केसारिया नामक 1 जनवरी को ग्रीस में बेसिल का फीस्ट दिवस मनाया जाता है, इस दिन तोहफों का आदान प्रदान किया जाता है।

13. कई देशों में सैंटा क्लाज़ पर आधारित थीम पार्क भी बनाए गए हैं।
14. कहते हैं कि अब सैंटा क्लाज़ के साथ और भी कई कहानियां जोड़ दी गई है। उन्हें मदद करने वाले बौने एल्वज की कहानियां भी बताई जाती है। तारों से जुड़ी कहानियां और जिंगल बेल का गीत भी जोड़ा गया है। सैंटा के संबंध में एक और लोककथा है जो गीत 'सांता क्लॉज़ इस कमिंग टू टाउन" में प्रचलित है।
15.जिंगल बेल के गाने को ईसाई धर्म में क्रिसमस से जोड़ दिया गया है, लेकिन कुछ लोग यह मानते हैं कि यह क्रिसमस सॉग्न है ही नहीं। यह थैंक्सगिविंग सॉग्न है जिसे 1850 में जेम्स पियरपॉन्ट ने 'वन हॉर्स ओपन स्लेई' शीर्षक से लिखा था।
16. सैंटा क्लाज़ और उनकी पत्नी एवं बच्चों को लेकर हॉलीवुड की कुछ फिल्में बनी है जिसके चलते अब यह पात्र पूर्णत: क्रिसमस के त्योहार का एक विशेष अंग बन चुका है। इसी तरह क्रिसमस पर्व से सैंटा क्लॉज और जिंगल के जुड़े होना का किस्से बहुत ही रोचक है।
17. सैंटा क्लाज़ का अस्तित्व है या नहीं यह एक शोध का विषय हो सकता है परंतु अब यह पात्र बच्चों के बीच इतना ज्यादा लोकप्रिय हो चला है कि क्रिसमय पर बच्चे ईसा मसीह से जुड़ने के बजाय सैंटा क्लाज़ से ज्यादा खुद को जोड़ते हैं। प्रर्थनाओं की जगह उपहारों के बारे में ज्यादा सोचते हैं।
18. पहले ऐसा था कि कोई बूढ़ा व्यक्ति ही सैंटा क्लाज़ बनकर बच्चों को उपहार देता था परंतु फिर शहर और गांव में हजारों लोग सैंटा क्लाज़ बनकर बच्चों को चर्च या बाजार में हर कहीं खड़े होकर उपहार देने लगे हैं। अब तो बच्चे भी सैंटा क्लाज़ बनने लगे हैं।
19. कहते हैं कि सांता अपनी पत्नी मिसेस सांता और एक बहुत बड़े परिवार के साथ नार्थ पोल पर रहते हैं। नार्थ पोल कनाडा, डेनमार्क, फिनलैंड, आइसलैंड, नार्वे, रशिया, स्वीडन और यूनाइटेड स्टेट्स जैसे देशों के पास है। यह घर पूरे साल क्रिसमय की तरह ही सजा रहता है।
20. कहते हैं कि सांता का घर बहुत बड़ा है जो बर्फ से ढंका हुआ है। सांता के घर में एक खास जगह है जिसे सांता की डेन यानी निजी जगह कहा जाता है जहां सभी लोग जिसमें सांता, उनकी पत्नी, बहुत सारे एल्व्स और रेनडियर्स एक साथ रहते हैं। कहते हैं कि बड़ी संख्या में कल्पित बौने और कम से कम आठ या नौ उड़ने वाले रेन्डियर रहते हैं।
21. सांता के घर में क्राफ्ट कॉटेज नामक एक जगह है जहां पर एल्व्स मिलकर खूबसूरत सामान जैसे ग्रीटिंग कार्डस, फूलों की डलियां, कागज के फूल, सुंदर पर्स, लकडी की नाव, गुलदस्ते और भी बहुत कुछ बनाते हैं। सांता के घर का दूसरा हिस्सा एक डाकघर है।
22. सांता को हर साल लाखों पत्र लिखे जाते हैं। ये पत्र अधिकतर छोटे बच्चों द्वारा लिखे होते हैं। इतनी बड़ी मात्रा में आने वाले पत्रों के लिए अलग से डाक कर्मचारियों की नियुक्ति करनी होती है। कम से कम 20 देश ऐसे हैं जहाँ दिसंबर के महीने में खासतौर से नए कर्मचारी बहाल किए जाते हैं। यूरोपीय देशों में ये पत्र फादर सिमस या सेंट निकोलस तथा रूस में डेड मोरोज के नाम से पहचाने जाने वाले सांता को संबोधित होते हैं। सांता के पते के तौर पर कई बार विस्तृत जानकारी दी होती है, तो कई बार केवल 'टू सांता, नॉर्थ पोल' लिखा होता है। पत्रों में पते के तौर पर कई बार केवल सांता की छोटी-सी ड्रॉइंग बना दी जाती है।
23. कई पश्चिमी ईसाई देशों में यह मान्यता है कि सांता क्रिसमस की पूर्व संध्या, यानि 24 दिसम्बर की शाम या देर रात के समय के दौरान अच्छे बच्चों के घरों में आकर उन्हें उपहार देता है। सान्ता क्लोज खासतौर से क्रिसमस पर बच्चों को खिलौने और तोहफे बांटने ही वे उत्तरी ध्रुव पर आते हैं बाकि का समय वे लेप लैन्ड, फीनलैन्ड में रहते हैं।
24. सांता के रेंडीयरों के नाम हैं- रुडोल्फ़, डेशर, डांसर, प्रेन्सर, विक्सन, डेंडर, ब्लिटज़न, क्युपिड और कोमेट। कहते हैं कि सांता और उनके साथी और मददगार एल्फों की टोली ने जादू की झिलमिलाती धूल, रेंडीयरों पर डाली थी उसी के कारण रेंडीयरों को उड़ना आ गया। यह जादू की धूल अब सांता क्रिसमय की रात को ही इस्तेमाल करते हैं।
25. जीसस और मदर मैरी के बाद संत निकोलस को ही इतना सम्मान मिला। क्रिसमस का वर्तमान स्वरूप 19वीं सदी की देन है। सदी के अंत में टोम स्मिथ द्वारा क्रिसमय पर आतिशबाजी प्रारंभ की गई थी। सन् 1844 में प्रथम क्रिसमस कार्ड बनाया गया। सांता क्लॉज़ या क्रिसमस फ़ादर का प्रथम उल्लेख सन् 1868 की एक पत्रिका में मिलता है। 1821 में इंग्लैंड की महारानी ने क्रिसमस ट्री में देव प्रतिमा रखने की परम्परा को जन्म दिया था।
इस तरह हमने देखा कि सैंटा क्लॉज या भारत में सांता क्लॉज किस तरह लोकप्रिय हुए और क्या है इसकी सचाई। इस बात से इनकार नहीं किया जा सकता है कि संत निकोलस को ही अधिकतर देशों में सैंटा क्लॉज के रूप में मान्यता दी गई है। जो भी हो क्रिसमय पर सैंटा क्लॉज का होना इस पर्व में और भी ज्यादा खुशियां को भर देता है।
