निकोला टेस्ला 19 वीं शताब्दी के महान आविष्कारकों में से एक थे। हालांकि वो कभी अपने महान प्रतिद्वंद्वी थॉमस एडिसन जितने लोकप्रिय नहीं हुए। दिलचस्प बात ये भी है कि थॉमस एडिसन उनके बॉस थे। जो बिजली की रूप में ख़पत करते हैं इसे विकसित करने में क्रोएशियाई इंजीनियर निकोला टेस्ला का बड़ा योगदान है।
एडिसन डायरेक्ट करंट (डीसी) को बेहतर मानते थे, जो 100 वोल्ट की पावर पर काम करता था और उसे दूसरे वोल्टेज में बदलना मुश्किल था। लेकिन टेस्ला का सोचना था कि अल्टरनेटिव करंट (एसी) बेहतर है, क्योंकि उसे एक जगह से दूसरी जगह ले जाना आसान था।
जीत टेस्ला की हुई, लेकिन इतिहास में 'फादर ऑफ इलेक्ट्रिसिटी' थॉमस एडिसन को कहा गया। दक्षिण अफ्रीका के उद्यमी एलोन मस्क का शुक्रिया अदा करना होगा, जिन्होंने बिजली से चलने वाली कारों की कंपनी को टेस्ला नाम दिया।
मस्क कंपनी में कार्यकारी निदेशक के रूप में काम कर रहे हैं और उनकी कंपनी विशेष रूप से बिजली से चलने वाली कारें बनाती है। टेस्ला ने विद्युत के आविष्कार के अलावा कई तरह की टेक्नोलॉजी की भविष्यवाणी की थी, जो दशकों बाद सच साबित होती दिखती हैं। नीचे उनकी कुछ सबसे उल्लेखनीय भविष्यवाणियों का जिक्र है।
वाई फाई
वायरलेस टेक्नॉलॉजी को लेकर अपने जुनून के चलते टेस्ला ने डेटा ट्रांसमिशन पर केंद्रित कई आविष्कार किए और इससे जुड़े कई सिद्धांतों को विकसित किया। गुइलेर्मो मार्कोनी ने सबसे पहले अटलांटिक भर में मोर्स कोड के ज़रिए पत्र भेजे। लेकिन टेस्ला इससे आगे का कुछ करना चाहते थे।
उन्होंने संभावना जताई थी कि पूरी दुनिया में एक दिन टेलिफोन सिग्नल, दस्तावेज़, संगीत की फाइलें और वीडियो भेजने के लिए वायरलेस टेक्नोलॉजी का इस्तेमाल होगा और आज वाई-फाई के ज़रिए ऐसा करना संभव है। हालांकि वो खुद ऐसा कुछ नहीं बना पाए थे, उनकी ये भविष्यवाणी 1990 में वर्ल्ड वाइड वेब के आविष्कार के साथ सच हुई।
मोबाइल फोन
टेस्ला ने 1926 में एक अमरीकी मैगज़ीन को दिए इंटरव्यू में भविष्य के अपने एक और पूर्वानुमान का जिक्र किया था। उन्होंने तस्वीरें, संगीत और वीडियो ट्रांस्मिट करने के अपने आइडिया को 'पॉकेट टेक्नोलॉजी' का नाम दिया।
उन्होंने समार्टफोन के आविष्कार के 100 साल पहले ही इसकी भविष्यवाणी कर दी थी। लेकिन क्या टेस्ला ने ये सोचा होगा कि मोबाइल हमारी जिंदगी का इतना अहम हिस्सा बन जाएगा?

ड्रोन
साल 1898 में टेस्ला ने बिना तार वाला और रिमोट से नियंत्रित होने वाला "ऑउटोमेशन" प्रदर्शित किया। आज हम इसे रिमोट से चलने वाली टॉय शिप या ड्रोन कहते हैं।
वायरलेस कम्यूनिकेशन, रोबॉटिक्स, लॉजिक गेट जैसी नई टेक्नोलॉजी से उन्होंने देखने वालों को हैरान कर दिया। लोगों को लगता था कि इनसे अंदर कोई छोटा बंदर है जो सिस्टम को नियंत्रित करता है। टेस्ला मानते थे कि एक दिन रिमोट से चलने वाली मशीनें लोगों की जिंदगी का अहम हिस्सा होंगी और ये भविष्यवाणी सच्चाई के बहुत करीब थी।
कमर्शियल हाई-स्पीड एयरक्राफ्ट
टेस्ला ने कल्पना कि थी कि ऐसे एयरक्राफ्ट होंगे जो दुनिया भर में तेज़ गति से और देशों के बीच कमर्शियल रूट पर यात्रा करेंगे। इन एयरक्राफ्ट में बहुत से यात्रियों के बैठने की व्यवस्था होगी।
निकोला टेस्ला ने कहा था, "वायरलेस पावर का सबसे अहम इस्तेमाल ईंधन के बिना उड़ने वाली मशीनों में होगा, जो लोगों को न्यूयॉर्क से यूरोप कुछ ही घंटों में पहुंचा देंगी।"
उस वक्त शायद इन बातों को पागलपन समझा जाता होगा। लेकिन टेस्ला एक बार फिर सही थे। कम से कम गति को लेकर। जहां तक बिना ईंधन के उड़ने वाले और बिजली से चलने वाले विमानों की बात है तो वो अब भी एक भविष्य का सपना है।
महिला सशक्तिकरण
1926 में कॉलियर्स के साथ उनके इंटरव्यू को 'वेन वुमन इज़ बॉस' शीर्षक दिया गया। इससे पता चलता है कि 68 साल के टेस्ला उस वक्त महिलाओं के लिए क्या सोचते थे। टेस्ला मानते थे महिलाएं बेहतर शिक्षा, रोज़गार और समाज में प्रभावशाली बनने के लिए वायरलेस टेक्नोलॉजी का इस्तेमाल करेंगी।
हालांकि बीती सदी में तकनीक को सामाजिक और राजनीतिक ज़िंदगी में महिलाओं के सशक्तिकरण से जोड़ना मुश्किल है। ये ज़रूर देखा गया है कि महिलाएं तकनीक के क्षेत्र में बढ़ चढ़ हिस्सा ले रही हैं।
याहू की कार्यकारी निदेशक और कम्प्यूटर इंजीनियर मैरिसा मेयर और फेसबुक की वर्तमान ऑपरेशनल डायरेक्टर शेरिल सैंडबर्ग इस बात का सबूत हैं। इनकी जैसी महिलाएं ने तकनीक के सहारे #metoo जैसे अभियान चलाकर वैश्विक स्तर पर जागरूकता फैलाने का काम किया है।
