घने जंगलों के बीच एक बहता नाला। नाले के बीच में खड़ा एक तेंदुआ। बगैर पिंजरे के उसे दबोचने के लिए उसकी ठंडी आँखों में आँखे डालकर आगे बढ़ते पांच लोग। सब कुछ साँसे रोक देने वाला था।
लेकिन तब तो रीढ़ की हड्डियों में दहशत की सिहरन दौड़ गई, जब तेंदुआ भागने या पीछे हटने की बजाय उन लोगों की ओर ही बढ़ने लगा। घेरा बहुत छोटा हो गया था और सबकी सांसे लगभग थम सी गई थीं।
दयाशंकर तिवारी ने अपनी 24 साल की सेवा में यूं तो जंगली जानवरों से कई नजदीकी मुठभेड़ें की है, लेकिन यह वाकया उन्हें जिंदगी भर नहीं भूलेगा। दयाशंकर भारत-नेपाल सीमा से सटे पूर्वी उत्तर प्रदेश के महाराजगंज ज़िले के सोहगीबरवा वन्य प्रभाग में रेंजर हैं।
जब तेंदुआ हमारी तरफ बढ़ा... : बीते रविवार यानी 8 अप्रैल की दोपहर दो बजे जब वे फील्ड में थे तो उनके एक वन्य सुरक्षाकर्मी श्यामधर पांडेय ने उन्हें खबर दी कि घने जंगलों के बीच एक तेंदुआ कुछ लस्त-पस्त हालत में पड़ा हुआ है।
चूंकि कुछ ही दिनों पहले इस रेंज में एक तेंदुए की लाश मिली थी इसलिए आशंकाओं में डूबते तिवारी फौरन उस जगह पर जा पहुंचे। घने जंगलों के बीच बहते एक नाले के ठीक बीचोंबीच तेंदुआ खड़ा था।
अभियान के अगुआ रेंजर दया शंकर तिवारी : कई बार वह अचानक बैठ जाता था और देर तक खड़े होने की नाकाम कोशिश करता था। साफ जाहिर था कि या तो वह घायल है या बुरी तरह बीमार। दयाशंकर और उनके साथियों ने उसकी मदद के लिए फौरन कोशिशें शुरू कर दी।
दयाशंकर कहते हैं, 'हमने आवाजें देकर उसे अपनी तरफ आने का इशारा किया तो वह हमारी तरफ बढ़ने लगा। उसका अचानक बढ़ना डराने वाला जरूर था लेकिन हमारे साथियों ने उसके चारों तरफ एक घेरा बना दिया।'
'धीरे-धीरे जब वह हमारे करीब आ गया तो पीछे से श्यामधर पांडेय और डीपी कुशवाहा ने एक जंप लगा कर उसके पिछले पैरों को ठीक से दबोच लिया। यह एक बहुत खतरनाक कोशिश जरूर थी लेकिन उसे बचाने के लिए दूसरा कोई रास्ता नहीं था।'
पिंजरे के बिना यूं ले गए तेंदुए को : दयाशंकर बताते हैं, 'हमें हैरत थी कि उसने बहुत प्रतिरोध नहीं किया। तेंदुए को काबू में करने के बाद उसके हाथ-पैर बांध दिए गए। गले में एक अंगोछा भी बांधा गया ताकि उसे पकड़ कर तेंदुए पर नियंत्रण बनाए रखा जाए।'
इस बीच उन्होंने डिविजनल फॉरेस्ट ऑफिसर मनीष सिंह को भी इसकी सूचना दी जिन्होंने पिंजरा भिजवाने के लिए कहा लेकिन दयाशंकर और उनके साथियों को ऐसा लग रहा था कि ज्यादा देर करने से तेंदुए को नुकसान हो सकता है इसलिए उन्होंने एक और साहस भरा क़दम उठाने का फैसला कर लिया।

बाइक पर बिठाने से पहले इस तरह बांधा गया तेंदुआ : फॉरेस्ट गार्ड श्यामधर पांडेय की बाइक पर पीछे तेंदुए को लिटाया गया और उसके पीछे गार्ड जय गोविंद मिश्रा उसके गले में बंधे अंगोछे को मजबूती से पकड़ कर बैठ गए ताकि वह श्यामधर पर हमला ना कर सके।
इस बाइक के साथ चल रहे दयाशंकर बताते हैं- थोड़ी दूर जाने पर रास्ते में एक गड्ढे पर जब बाइक उछली तो तेंदुए ने हल्की सी हरकत की और उसके पंजे की कुछ खरोंचे श्यामधर की पीठ और पेट पर लगी लेकिन वे चलते रहे।
लगभग 3 किलोमीटर चलने के बाद जब वे लोग उस जगह पर पहुंचे जहां दयाशंकर की टाटा सूमो खड़ी थी, तब जाकर सबकी जान में जान आई।
वाह रे आपका नन्हा! : तेंदुए को गाड़ी में पीछे डाला गया और तक़रीबन 30 किलोमीटर की दूरी तय करके यह टीम डिविजनल मुख्यालय पंहुची। तेंदुए को पिंजरे में बंद किया गया और बाद में उसे महाराजगंज के पशु चिकित्सालय ले जाया गया जहां उसका इलाज शुरू हुआ।
और तब जाकर कोई पांच घंटे बाद वन्य इतिहास की कुछ सबसे साहसिक और मानवीय मुहिमों में से एक पूरी हुई जिसमें शायद पहली बार एक तेंदुए ने इंसानों के बीच बैठकर तीन किमी तक बाइक की सवारी की थी।
डिविजनल फॉरेस्ट ऑफिसर मनीष सिंह कहते हैं- डॉक्टरों का अनुमान है कि तेंदुए पर जंगली सूअरों या किसी किस्म के कुछ बड़े जानवरों ने हमला किया था। उसके शरीर पर दांतों और पंजों के निशान भी पाए गए। चूँकि तेंदुआ बामुश्किल डेढ़ साल का है इसलिए इस लड़ाई में बुरी तरह थक कर पस्त हो गया। उसे ग्लूकोज़ चढ़ाया गया और अब वह बेहतर है।
अपने वनकर्मियों की प्रशंसा करते हुए सिंह कहते हैं- 'यह बहुत अनोखा और बहुत साहसिक अभियान था जिसे अंजाम देकर हमारे वनकर्मियों ने अपना फर्ज निभाने की एक मिसाल कायम की है।'
उधर दयाशंकर और उनके साथी इसी बात से खुश हैं कि नन्हा तेंदुआ अब पिंजरे में टहल रहा है। वे याद करते हुए कहते हैं- 'दो साल पहले एक और तेंदुए को हम लोगों ने बचाया था। वह बांस के खूंटे में फंस गया था और हिल नहीं पा रहा था। लेकिन तब वह बेबस था और हमारे पास पिंजरा भी था। लेकिन यहां तो हम उसे ऐसे ले जा रहे थे जैसे गोद में बीमार नन्हें बच्चे को लेकर अस्पताल जा रहे हों।'
नन्हा कहने पर श्यामधर पाण्डेय मुस्कुराने लगते हैं- 'पचास किलो वजन, हथौड़े जैसा पंजा... वाह रे आपका नन्हा!'
इस मुहिम में शामिल रहे कुशवाहा, वीरेंद्र और मोबिन अली के लिए भी यह जिंदगी भर ना भूलने वाली कहानी बन गई है। कुशवाहा कहते हैं- 'कई लोग कहते हैं कि मोटर साइकिल पर ले जाते वक्त वीडियो बनाया होता तो मजा आ जाता। मगर सच यही है कि उस समय हम सभी के मन में उसकी जान बचाने के लिए जल्दी से जल्दी भागते रहने के अलावा कुछ और था ही नहीं।'
जल्दी ही तेंदुआ फिर से अपने जंगलों में लौट जाएगा। अपने साथियों के बीच। यह बताने के लिए कि उसने बाइक की सवारी भी की है और इस संदेश के साथ कि 'आदमी हमेशा बुरे ही नही होते'।
