बियाबान रेगिस्तान में वे वन्य प्राणियों और पेड़ पौधों के रक्षक हैं। बिश्नोई समाज के लोग जंगली जानवर और पेड़ों के लिए अपनी जान का नज़राना पेश करने को भी तैयार रहते हैं। इसीलिए जब फ़िल्म स्टार सलमान खान के हाथों काले हिरणों के शिकार का मामला सामने आया तो वे सड़कों पर आ गए।
बिश्नोई अपने आराध्य गुरु जम्भेश्वर के बताए 29 नियमों का पालन करते हैं। इनमें एक नियम वन्य जीवों की रक्षा और वृक्षों की हिफाजत से जुड़ा है। बिश्नोई समाज के लोग सिर्फ रेगिस्तान तक ही महदूद नहीं है। वे राजस्थान के अलावा हरियाणा, पंजाब, उत्तर प्रदेश और मध्य प्रदेश में भी आबाद हैं।
बिश्नोई समाज
जोधपुर से सांसद रहे जसवंत सिंह बिश्नोई कहते हैं, "हमारे संस्थापक जम्भेश्वर जी ने जीव दया का पाठ पढ़ाया था। वे कहते थे, 'जीव दया पालनी, रूंख लीलू नहीं घावे' अर्थात जीवों के प्रति दया रखनी चाहिए और पेड़ों की हिफाजत करनी चाहिए। इन कार्यो से व्यक्ति को बैकुंठ मिलता है।"
इस समाज के लोग दरख्तों और वन्य प्राणियों के लिए रियासत काल में भी हुकूमत से लड़ते रहे हैं। बिश्नोई समाज के पर्यावरण कार्यकर्ता हनुमान बिश्नोई कहते हैं, "जोधपुर रियासत में जब सरकार ने पेड़ काटने का आदेश दिया था तो बिश्नोई समाज के लोग विरोध में आ खड़े हुए थे। ये 1787 की बात है। उस वक्त राजा अभय सिंह का शासन था।"
जोधपुर के पूर्व सांसद और पूर्व मंत्री बिश्नोई कहते हैं, "उस वक्त ये नारा दिया गया था, 'सर साठे रूंख रहे तो भी सस्तो जान।' इसका मतलब था, अगर सिर कटाकर भी पेड़ बच जाएं तो भी सस्ता है।"
'पुरखों की क़ुर्बानी'
बिश्नोई बताते हैं, "जब रियासत के लोग पेड़ काटने के लिए आए तो जोधपुर के खेजड़ली और आस-पास के लोगों ने विरोध किया।"
"उस वक्त बिश्नोई समाज की अमृता देवी ने पहल की और पेड़ के बदले खुद को पेश किया।" "इसी कड़ी में बिश्नोई समाज के 363 लोगों ने दरख्तों के लिए अपने प्राणों का बलिदान कर दिया। इनमें 111 महिलाएं थीं।"
"इन्हीं बलिदानियों की याद में हर साल खेजड़ली में मेला आयोजित किया जाता है और लोग अपने पुरखों की क़ुर्बानी को श्रदा सुमन अर्पित करते हैं।"
"ये आयोजन न केवल अपने संकल्प को दोहराने के लिए है बल्कि नई पीढ़ी को वन्य जीवों की रक्षा और वृक्षों की हिफाजत की प्रेरणा देने का काम करता है।"

बिश्नोई समाज के गुरु
गुरु जम्भेश्वर का जन्म 1451 में हुआ था। बीकानेर ज़िले में अपने गुरु का जन्म स्थान समरथल बिश्नोई समाज का तीर्थ स्थल है। वहीं, उस क्षेत्र के मकाम में गुरु जम्भेश्वर का समाधि स्थल है। जहां हर साल मेला आयोजित किया जाता है।
मारवाड़ रियासत के जनसंख्या अधीक्षक (सेंसस सुपरिटेंडेंट) मुंशी हरदयाल ने बिश्नोई समाज पर किताब लिखी है। उन्होंने लिखा है, "बिश्नोई समाज के संस्थापक जम्भो जी पंवार राजपूत थे। साल 1487 में जब जबरदस्त सूखा पड़ा तो जम्भो जी ने लोगो की बड़ी सेवा की।"
"उस वक्त बड़ी तादाद में जाट समुदाय के लोगों ने जम्भो जी से प्रेरित होकर बिश्नोई संप्रदाय को अपना लिया।"
'बीस और नौ मिलकर बिश्नोई'
मुंशी हरदयाल लिखते हैं कि बिश्नोई समाज के लोग जम्भो जी को हिंदुओं के भगवान् विष्णु का अवतार मानते हैं। बिश्नोई समाज की व्याख्या इस तरह से भी की जाती है कि जम्भो जी ने कुल 29 जीवन सूत्र बताए थे। बीस और नौ मिलकर बिश्नोई हो गए।
बिश्नोई समाज में किसी के दिवंगत होने पर दफनाने की प्रक्रिया अपनाई जाती है। पूर्व सांसद विश्नोई कहते हैं, "राजस्थान, हरियाणा, पंजाब आदि में किसी के निधन पर शव को दफनाने की प्रक्रिया है। यूपी के कुछ भागों में दाह संस्कार किया जाता है।"
रेगिस्तान में वन्य जीवों के प्रति बिश्नोई समाज के लोग अडिग खड़े मिलते हैं और बीच-बीच में हिरणों का शिकार करने वालो से उनका मुकाबला भी होता रहता है।
अटूट रिश्तों की बानगी
बिश्नोई बहुल गावों में ऐसे मंज़र भी मिलते हैं जब कोई बिश्नोई महिला किसी अनाथ हिरण के बच्चे को अंचल में समेटे स्तनपान कराती नजर आती है। पूर्व सांसद बिश्नोई कहते हैं, "ये वन्य प्राणियों के प्रति बिश्नोई समाज के अटूट रिश्तों की बानगी है।"
यूँ तो बिश्नोई खेती और पशुपालन को ही अपनी आजीविका का साधन मानते हैं। मगर वक्त के साथ बिश्नोई समाज के लोग उद्योग व्यापार में हाथ आजमाने लगे हैं। बिश्नोई समाज के हनुमान बिश्नोई कहते हैं, "जम्भो जी ने प्रकृति का सम्मान करने की सीख दी है। हम सह अस्तित्व में विश्वास करते हैं।"
"जितना मनुष्य का जीवन मूल्यवान है, उतना ही महत्वपूर्ण है प्रकृति की रक्षा करना।"... वे कहते हैं, "जम्भो जी के जीवन और शिक्षा से प्रभावित होकर अनेक जातियों ने बिश्नोई जीवन मूल्यों में आस्था व्यक्ति की और बिश्नोई हो गए।"
