'સત્યમ, શિવમ અને સુંદરમ' - જે સત્ય છે તે બ્રહ્મ છે - બ્રહ્મ એટલે પરમાત્મા. જે શિવ છે તે પરમ શુભ અને પવિત્ર છે. અને જે સુંદરમ છે એ પ્રકૃતિ છે. એટલે કે પરમાત્મા શિવ પાર્વતી સિવાય કશુ જ જાણવાને લાયક નથી. આમને ઓળખવા અને એમનામા લીન થઈ જવાનો માર્ગ જ છે - યોગ.
શિવ કહે છે 'મનુષ્ય પશુ છે' - આ પશુતાને સમજવી એ જ યોગ અને તંત્રની શરૂઆત છે. યોગથી મોક્ષ કે પરમાત્માની પ્રાપ્તિના ત્રણ માર્ગ છે - જાગરણ, અભ્યાસ અને સમર્પણ.
તંત્રયોગ છે સમર્પણનો માર્ગ. જ્યારે શિવે જાણ્યુ કે તે પરમ તત્વ કે સત્યને જાણવાનો માર્ગ છે તો તેમણે પોતાની અર્ધાગિની પાર્વતીને મોક્ષ માટે તે માર્ગ બતાવ્યો.
શિવ દ્વારા માઁ પાર્વતીને જે જ્ઞાન આપવામાં આવ્યુ તે ખૂબ જ ગૂડ-ગંભીર અને રહસ્યથી ભરેલુ જ્ઞાન હતુ. તે જ્ઞાનની આજે અનેક શાખાઓ ચાલી રહી છે. તે જ્ઞાનયોગ અને તંત્રના મૂળ સૂત્રોમાં સમાયેલ છે.
'વિજ્ઞાન ભૈરવ તંત્ર' એક એવો ગ્રંથ છે, જેમાં ભગવાન શિવ દ્વારા પાર્વતીને બતાવવામાં આવેલ 112 ધ્યાન સૂત્રોનુ સંકલન છે.
યોગશાસ્ત્રના પ્રવર્તક ભગવાન શિવના 'વિજ્ઞાન ભૈરવ તંત્ર' અને 'શિવ સંહિતા'માં તેમની સંપૂર્ણ શિક્ષા અને દીક્ષા સમાયેલી છે. તંત્રના અનેક ગ્રંથોમાં તેમની શિક્ષાનો વિસ્તાર થયેલો છે. ભગવાન શિવના યોગને તંત્ર કે વામયોગ કહે છે. આની જ એક શાખા હઠયોગની છે.
ભગવાન શિવ કહે છે - વામો માર્ગ પરમગહનો યોગિતામપ્યગમ્ય : - અર્થાત વામ માર્ગ ખૂબ જ ઉંડો છે અને યોગીઓને માટે પણ અગમ્ય છે - મેરુતંત્ર.
આદિનો અર્થ છે પ્રારંભ. શિવને આદિદેવ કે આદિનાથ કહેવાય છે. નાથ અને શૈવ સંપ્રદાયના આદિદેવ છે ભગવાન શંકર જેમણે શિવ પણ કહેવાય છે. શિવ થી જ યોગનો જન્મ થયેલો માનવામાં આવ્યો છે. વૈદિકકાળમાં રુદ્રનુ સ્વરૂપ અને જીવન દર્શન પૌરાણિક કાળ આવતા આવતા સંપૂર્ણ બદલાઈ ગયુ. વેદ જેને રુદ્ર કહે છે પુરાણ તેમને શંકર અને મહેશ કહે છે.
જ્યોતિષિઓ અને પુરાણિકોની ધારણાથી સર્વથા ભિન્ન છે. ભગવાન શંકરનુ દર્શન અને જીવન. તેમના આ દર્શન અને જીવનને જે સમજે છે તે જ મહાયોગીના મર્મ, કર્મ અને માર્ગને પણ સમજે છે.
ઋગ્વેદમાં વૃષભદેવનુ વર્ણન મળે છે, જે જૈનોના પ્રથમ તીર્થકર, ઋષભનાથ છે, તેમને જ વાતાવરણ મુની કહેવામાં આવે છે. તે તેમનુ જીવન અવધૂતની જેમ વિતાવતા હતા. યોગયુક્ત વ્યક્તિ જ અવધૂત થઈ શકે છે. એવુ મનાય છે કે શિવ પછી મુખ્ય રીતે એમની જ એક એવી પરંપરાની શરૂઆત થઈ જે આગળ જઈને શૈવ, સિધ્ધ, નાથ, દિગંબર અને સૂફી સંપ્રદાયમાં વિભક્ત થઈ ગઈ.
ઈસ્લામના પ્રભાવમાં આવીને સૂફીયોથી કમંડળ અને ધૂના છૂટી ગયા પણ ચિમટા અને ખપ્પર આજે પણ નથી છૂટ્યો. જે માળા રુદ્રાક્ષની હોય છે તે હવે લીલા, પીળા, સફેદ, મોતીઓની હોય છે. જે કાંઈ છે બધુ તે યોગેશ્વર શિવની પ્રતિ જ છે. તેમના નિરાકાર સ્વરૂપને શિવ અને સાકાર સ્વરૂપને શંકર કહે છે.
શૈવ અને નાથ સંપ્રદાયની ખૂબ પ્રાચીન પરંપરા રહી છે. જૈન અને નાથ સંપ્રદાયમાં જિન નવ નાથ ની ચર્ચા કરવામાં આવી છે. તે બધાના યોગી જ હતા, અને શિવના પ્રતિ જ હતા.
શિવને સ્વયંભૂ તેથી કહેવામાં આવે છે, કારણ કે આદિદેવ છે, જ્યારે ઘરતી પર કશુ જ નહોતુ ફક્ત એ જ હતા, તેમનાથી જ ધરતી પર બધુ થઈ ગયુ. તિબ્બતમાં આવેલ કૈલાશ પર્વત પર શરૂઆતમાં તેમનુ નિવાસસ્થાન હતુ.
વૈજ્ઞાનિકો મુજબ તિબ્બત ઘરતીની સૌથી પ્રાચીન ભૂમિ છે અને પુરાતણ કાળમાં તેની ચારે બાજુ સમુદ્ર હતો. પછી જ્યારે સમુદ્ર હટી ગયો તો બીજી ઘરતી પ્રકટ થઈ.
શિવના જીવન અને દર્શનને જે લોકો યોગ્ય દ્રષ્ટિથી જુએ છે તે સારી બુધ્ધિવાળા અને યથાર્થને પકડવાવાળા શિવભક્ત છે, કારણકે શિવનુ દર્શન કહે છે કે યથાર્થમાં જીવો, વર્તમાનમા જીવો પોતાની ચિત્ત વૃત્તિઓ સાથે લડો નહી. એને અજાણ્યા બનીને જુઓ અને કલ્પનાને પણ યથાર્થને માટે ઉપયોગ કરો. આઈંસ્ટાઈનના પહેલા શિવે જ કહ્યુ હતુ કે કલ્પના જ્ઞાનથી પણ વધુ મહત્વની છે.
શિવના દર્શન અને જીવનની વાર્તા દુનિયાના દરેક ધર્મ અને તેના ગ્રંથોમાં જુદા જુદા રૂપમાં વિદ્યમાન છે અને આ ભિન્નતાનુ કારણ છે પરંપરા અને ભાષાને બદલતા રહેવુ, પુરાણિકો દ્વારા તેમની મનગમતી વ્યાખ્યા કરતા રહેવુ.
