આપણા પરિસ્થિતિક તંત્રમાં દરેક પ્રાણીનું એક વિશેષ મહ્ત્વ છે. સાપ પણ તેમાંથી એક છે. સામાન્ય રીતે સાંપને ખૂબ ખતરનાક પ્રાણી ગણાય છે અને જોતા જ મારી નાખે છે. આ જ કારણે સાપની ખાસ પ્રજાતીઓ નાશ પામી છે. વૈજ્ઞાનિક દ્રષ્ટિકોણથી જોવા જઈએ તો સાંપ માણસના શત્રુ નહી પણ મિત્ર છે , કારણ કે તે અનાજને બરબાદ કરતા ઉંદરોને ખાય છે.

આપણે ત્યાં નાગને દેવતા માનીને પૂજવામાં આવે છે. આપણા દેશમાં ઘણા નાગ મંદિર પણ છે , જ્યાં મોટી સંખ્યામાં નાગોની પૂજા કરાય છે. નાગપંચમીના અવસર પર અમે તમને જણાવી રહયા છે. સાંપો સાથે સંકળાયેલી આવી જ આશ્ચર્યજનક વાતો વિશે જેના વિશે તમે નહી જાણતા હોય.

1. સાંપના મુખમાં આશરે 200 દાંત હોય છે. પણ આ દાંત શિકારને પકડવા માટે ન કે એને ચાવવા માટે. સાંપના નીચેના જબડામાં બે લાઈનોમાં લાઈનથી દાંત સોઈ જેવા તીક્ષ્ણ ગળાની અંદરની તરફ વળેલા હોય છે.

2. સાંપોની આંખ પર પલક હોતી નથી આથી એમની આંખો હમેશા ખુલી રહેવાના આભાસ થાય છે. આજ કારણે આ વિશ્વાસ હોય છે કે સાંપની આંખોથી સાંભળી શકે છે અને સંસ્કૃતમાં સાંપોને ચક્ષુશ્રવા એટલે જે આંખોથી સાંભળતા જીવ કહ્યા છે.

3. વિશ્વમાં સાંપોની 13 પ્રજાતિ મળી છે , એમની આશરે 2,744 પ્રજાતિઓ વિશ્વ ભરમાં ફેલાયેલી છે. ભારતમાં સાંપોની 10 જાતિઓ મળી છે . એના આશરે 270 પ્રજાતિઓ અત્યાર સુધી જોવાઈ છે. આધિકારિક રીતે આશરે 244 પ્રજાતિઓના સાંપની જાણકારી ઉપલબ્ધ છે.

4. શિકારને પકડતી વખતે સાંપના મુખમાં એક રસ ઉતપન્ન થાય છે, જેથી શિકારનો મુખમાં ફંસાયેલા ભાગ ભીનો થઈને ચિકણો થઈ જાય છે અને લપસી જાય છે જેથી સાંપ માટે એને ગળવું સરળ થઈ જાય છે.

5. સાંપ દિલ લાંબુ હોય છે. પણ આ ફેફસા કે કિડની જેવુ કશુ નથી. સાંપના દિલમાં ત્રણ કક્ષ હોય છે. બીજી બાજુ સ્તનપાન કરાવતા પશુ અને પંખીઓમાં આ ચાર કક્ષ હોય છે.

6. જુદા-જુદા પ્રકારના નાગના ભોજન પણ જુદા-જુદા હોય છે . ખાસ કરીને એક નાનો સાંપ 3-4 દિવસમાં એક વાર ખાય છે , પણ મોટા સાંપ અઠવાડિયામાં એક વાર ખાય છે. અજગર જેવા મોટા સાંપ તો લાંબા સમય સુધી ખાધા વગર રહી શકે છે.

7. સ્તનપાન કરાવતા જીવોની જેમ સાંપને બહારી કાન હોતા નથી. એના સ્થાન પર એક હાડકું હોય છે જે માથા સાથે સંકળાયેલ હોય છે , એ ધ્વનિ ગ્રહણ કરવાનું કાર્ય કરે છે.

8. સાંપ હવામાં વહેતા ધ્વનિ તરંગો માટે બેહરા હોય છે. પણ ધરતીની સપાટીમાંથી નિકળતા કંપન વિશે સાંપ ખૂબ સંવેદનશીલ હોય છે. ધરતીની સપાટીમાંથી નિકળી રહેલ સાંપો એમના નીચેના જબડાની સહાયતાથી પકડી લે છે.

9. રીઢધારી પ્રાણીઓમાં ત્વચાની ઉપરી પરત સમય-સમય પર મૃત થઈ જાય છે અને એમની વૃદ્ધિ અને વિકાસની સાથે-સાથે એના મૃત ત્વચાના સ્થાને નવી ત્વચા લઈ લે છે. આ રીતે એક નિશ્ચિત સમય પછી સાંપ પણ એની બાહ્ય ત્વચાની આખી પરત ઉતારી દે છે. એને કેંચુલી ઉતારવી કહે છે .

ધાર્મિક કથાઓ મુજબ સાંપના કેંચુલી ઉતારવા દૈવીય સ્વરૂપના સૂચક થઈ એને રૂપ પરિવર્તન કરી લેવાના સંબંધી ક્રિયાને એક જરૂરી અંગ છે. માનવુ છે કે કેંચુલી ઉતારી સાંપની ઉમ્ર વધી જાય છે અને એ અમરતા મેળવી જન્મ મરણના ચક્રથી છૂટી જાય છે.

10 સાંપની ત્વચા સ્વભાવિક રૂપથી સૂકી અને શુષ્ક થઈને જલરોધી આવરણ વાળી થઈ જાય ક્જ્જે અને એની પ્રજાતિના અનુરૂપ ચિકણી અને ખડબચડી થઈ શકે છે.

11 એમના શરીરમાં કોઈ પણ પ્રકારની ખરાબી કે નુકશાન એક સાંપને જલ્દી કેંચુલી ઉતારવા માટે બાધ્ય કરે છે. કેંચુલી ઉતારવાથી એક તો સાંપના શરીરની સફાઈ થઈ જાય છે , બીજા ત્વચામાં ફેલતા સંક્રમણથી પણ મુક્તિ મળી જાય છે.

12. ઉપરી પડ ઉતારવાના આશરે એક અઠવાડિયા પહેલા સાંપ સુસ્ત થઈ જાય છે અને કોઈ એકાંત સ્થાન પર જતારહે છે. છે આ સમયે લિમ્ફેટિક નામના દ્ર્વ્યના કારણે સાંપની આંખો દૂધિયા સફેદ રંગની થઈ અપારદર્શક થઈ જાય છે . આ અવસ્થામાં આ ભોજન પણ નથી કરતા.

13. કેંચુલી ઉતારવાથી 24 કલાક પહેલા સાંપની આંખો પર જામેલા લિમ્ફેટિક દ્ર્વ્ય અવશોષિત થઈ જાય છે અને આંખો સાફ થવાથી યોગ્ય રીતે જોઈી શકાય છે. કેંચુલી ઉતાર્યા પછી મેળવેલી નવી ત્વચા ચિકણી અને ચમકદાર હોય છે. આથી આ સમયે સાંપ ખૂબ ચુસ્ત અને આકર્ષક દેખાય છે.

14. સાંપને કેંચુલી ઉતારવના તરીકો ખૂબ કષ્ટદાયી હોય છે. સૌથી પહેલા એ એમના જબડાથી કેંચુલી ઉતારે છે કારણકે અહીં કેંચુલી સૌથી વધારે ઢીલી હોય છે શરૂઆતમાં સાંપ એમના જબડાને કોઈ ખરબચડી જગ્યા પર રગડે છે જેથી એમાં ચીરો થઈ જાય / જુદા થયેલા ભાગને કોઈ ઝાડની ડાળી જે કાંટા કે પત્થરના વચ્ચે ખાલી જગ્યામાં ફંસાવી શરીરને સાંકડુ કરીને ધીરે-ધીરે ખસે છે. એમની જૂની ત્વચાને બદલતા સમયે સાંપ ખૂબ બેચેન અને પરેશાનીનો આભાસ કરે છે.

15 સાંપ દ્વારા મૂકેલ પડની મદદથી સંબંધિત સાંપની ઓળખ કરી શકાય છે. આ સાંપ જેવી તો નથી હોતી પણ સાંપની ત્વચા પર પડેલા શલ્કોની આકૃતિ એની સાથે સો ટકા મળતી આવે છે.

16. કોઈ સાંપ એમના જીવનકાળમાં કેટલી વાર તેનુ ઉપરી પડ ઉતારશે આ સવાલના જવાબ ઘણી વાતો પર નિર્ભર કરે છે જેમ કે સાંપની વય, આરોગ્ય પ્રાકૃતિક રહેઠાણ તાપમાન વગેરે. સામાન્ય સાંપ એક વર્ષમાં 3-4 વાર પડ ઉતારે છે . બીજી બાજુ અજગર અને માટીના સાંપ વર્ષમાં એક વાર જ કેચુલી ઉતારે છે.

17 કેંચુલી પર સાંપના રંગ નહી જોવા મળે. કારણ કે રંગ બનાવતી પિગમેંટ કોશિકાઓ સાંપની સાથે જ નીકળી જાય છે.
