આજે આપણે આઝાદ દેશમાં શ્વાસ લઈ રહ્યા છીએ, પણ શુ માણસ બધી રીતે આઝાદ છે ખરો ? લોકો પૈસા કમાવવા અવનવા કાવતરા રચે છે. જે ઈમાનદાર છે તેને લોકો શાંતિથી જીવવા દેતા નથી, જે અભણ છે તેની અજ્ઞાનતાનો ફાયદો કહેવાતા જ્ઞાની લોકો ઉઠાવે છે અને આપણા નેતા જે આપણી કારણે જ ખુરશી પર રાજ કરી રહ્યા છે તે આપણા મોઢા પર શુ કહે છે અને પાછળથી શુ કરે છે તે કોણ નથી જાણતુ, આ જ વાતની રજુઆત અહીં આપેલી આ લધુકથાઓમાં કરી છે.
ઈમાનદારીની સજા
એ નાનકડા જિલ્લાના એક ગામમાં ટ્રેન રોકાઈ અને શેખર બાબુ પોતાનો સામાન લઈને નીચે ઉતર્યા એટલામાં જ તેમની નજર ફર્સ્ટ કલાસ ડબ્બામાંથી ચા વાળાને બૂમ પાડતા સુધીર બાબુ પર પડી. તેમણે આનંદના આવેગમાં જોરથી અવાજ લગાવ્યો 'ભાઈ સુધીર.... ક્યા? સુધીર બાબૂ જે તેમની જ જેવા જ ફર્સ્ટ ઓફિસર હતા. હસીને બોલ્યા ભાઈ આપણી તો એશ ચાલી રહી છે. દરેક વર્ષની જેમ આ વર્ષે પણ રજાઓ ગાળવા પરિવાર સાથે ઉંટી જઈ રહ્યો છુ. અને તમે ..... તમે અહીં ક્યાથી ?
બસ અહીં બદલી થઈ ગઈ છે - શેખર બાબુ નિરાશ થઈને બોલ્યા. એટલામાં જ ટ્રેન ચાલુ થઈ ગઈ અને શેખર બાબુ હાથ હલાવતા પાછળ રહી ગયા. ટ્રેનમાં સુધીર બાબૂ પોતાની પત્નીને બતાવી રહ્યા હતા કે આ માણસ જરાપણ પ્રેકટીકલ નથી. ન તો પોતે ખાય છે અને ન તો બીજાને ખાવા દે છે. તેથી જ આને કોઈ પણ ઓફિસમા ટકવા નથી દેતા. પોતાની કરણી (પોતાની ઈમાનદારી)ની સજા ભોગવી રહ્યો છે, બીજુ શુ.

આ વર્ષે પંચાયત ચૂંટણીમાં ગામમાં સરપંચને માટે આદિવાસી પદ આરક્ષિત હતુ. એક માત્ર મંગલૂનો પરિવાર જ ગામમાં રહેતો હતો. જે સરપંચ પદ માટે નિર્વિરોધ ચૂંટવામાં આવવાનો હતો. વર્તમાન સરપંચ ઠાકુર સાહેબે મંગલૂને પોતાના માણસો મોકલીને બોલાવ્યો.
મંગલૂએ હાથ જોડીને નમીને અભિવાદન કર્યુ. 'અમે તને ગામનો સરપંચ બનાવવા માંગીએ છીએ, મંગલૂ તેથી આ દાખલાના ફોર્મ પર અંગૂઠો લગાવી દે અને હા આ અંગૂઠાના બદલામાં તે તારા માતા પિતાની અંતિમ ક્રિયા માટે લીધુ હતુ તેનુ વ્યાજ પાંચ વર્ષ સુધી અમે માફ કરી દઈએ છીએ'. મંગલૂ ઘણો ખુશ હતો, સરપંચ પદને માટે અંગૂઠો લગાવીને માન સન્માન અને પ્રતિષ્ઠા તેણે મળી ગઈ. પણ આ વાતથી તે અજાણ હતો કે 'એકલવ્ય' ની જેમ તે દ્રોણને પાંચ વર્ષો માટે પોતાનો અંગૂઠો ભેટ ચઢાવી ચૂક્યો છે.

નેતાજી આવ્યા. આવે જ છે. કેટલાય કાર્યક્રમોમાં ભાગ લેવા. એક શાનદાર કાર્યક્રમની વચ્ચે એક સજ્જને મંચ પર ચઢીને એક માંગ પત્ર આપતા કહ્યુ - 'અન્નદાતા, કોઈ રોજગાર, મકાન, શાળા, દવાખાનુ નથી જોઈતુ. નાનકડી વિનંતી છે. ગામથી શહેર તરફ જતો રસ્તો, ગલી, કશુ પણ ચાલવા ફરવાને લાયક નથી. તમારો ઈશારો થઈ જશે તો રસ્તાની કાયા પલટાઈ જશે. ગરીબ તમને આશીર્વાદ આપશે
નેતાજી માઈક પર બોલ્યા ' 'ભાઈ અન્નદાતા નહી સેવક કહો અમને. વિનંતે નહી આદેશ કરો તમે. તમે મને આશીર્વાદનુ કહો છો. હું કોઈ સંત થોડો છુ, હુ કણ પણ નથી. તમારો આશીર્વાદ વોટના રૂપમાં મળતો રહ્યો છે. હું આજે જ જોઈને વ્યવસ્થા કરુ છુ. હું આવ્યો પણ શાને માટે છુ.' તાળીઓ વાગી. તે સજ્જન ખુશ થઈને ચાલ્યા ગયા. નેતાજીએ ચા-નાસ્તો લીધો. સીધા હેલિકોપ્ટરમાં બેસ્યા. તેમણે હેલિકોપ્ટરમાંથી જોયુ અને બોલ્યા - રસ્તો તો સારો છે. એમ જ લોકો ફરિયાદ કરે છે.
