વિશ્વનો સૌથી પ્રાચીન આપણો ભારત દેશ ઉત્સવોનો દેશ છે. ભારતમાં ઉજવાતા મોટાભાગના દરેક ઉત્સવો પાછળ એક ચોક્કસ આધ્યાત્મિક, નૈતિક તેમજ સામાજિક રહસ્ય છુપાયેલું છે. એટલે દેશમાં ઉજવાતા દરેક ઉત્સવો માનવીમાં એક નવી ચેતના જાગૃત કરે છે. જીવનને આશા–ઉમંગથી ભરી દે છે. હતાશા, નિરાશા, દુઃખ, વ્યથા, અશાંતિ તેમજ આળસથી માનવીને મુક્ત કરી જીવનમાં નવો પ્રાણ ફૂંકે છે. વર્ષ દરમ્યાન આવતા અનેક ઉત્સવોમાં શિવરાત્રિના પર્વનું એક આગવું તેમજ વિશિષ્ટ મહત્વ છે. કારણ કે શિવરાત્રિ એ દેવાધિદેવ શિવના અવતરણનું અર્થાત શિવજયંતિનું પર્વ છે.
આપણે સૌ જાણીએ છીએ તેમજ સ્વીકારીએ પણ છીએ કે જ્યોતિ સ્વરૂપ પરમાત્મા શિવ, જેની પૂજા વૈદિક સમયથી જ્યોતિર્લિંગ સ્વરૂપે કરવામાં આવે છે, તે શ્રી રામ-શ્રી કૃષ્ણના, બ્રહ્મા–વિષ્ણુ-શંકર જેવા ત્રિદેવના, દેવોના ગુરુ બૃહપતિ તેમજ દૈત્યોના ગુરુ શુક્રાચાર્યના, રાવણ જેવા રાક્ષસના તેમજ સર્વ ધર્મસ્થાપકોના હમેશાં આરાધ્ય રહ્યા છે. સર્વ મનુષ્ય આત્માઓના પરમપિતા પરમાત્મા શિવને દેહાતિત, અજન્મા, અકર્તા, અભોક્તા અને અવ્યક્ત સ્વરૂપે સ્વીકાર કરવામાં આવ્યાં છે. એટલે જ તેમનું કોઈ દૈહિક સ્વરૂપ નથી. તેથી કરીને જ્યોતિના પ્રતિક સમાન લિંગ ની સ્થાપના કરી તેમની પૂજા-અર્ચના કરવામાં આવે છે. આ મહાજયોતિ સ્વરૂપ શિવ પરમાત્માના અવતરણના સંધર્ભમાં ઉજવાતી શિવજયંતીને મહાશિવરાત્રી રૂપે મનાવવામાં આવે છે.
શિવરાત્રિમાં રાત્રિ શબ્દ ખુબજ સૂચક છે. અર્થાત શિવ અવતરણને રાત્રિ સાથે કોઈ સંબંધ છે. આ રાત્રિ તે કઈ રાત્રિ? આ સમજવા આપણે પૃથ્વી ધરા પર ભજવાઈ રહેલા અનાદિ, અવિનાશી વિશ્વ નાટકના ચક્રને સમજવું પડશે. આ ચક્ર બ્રહ્માનો દિવસ અને બ્રહ્માની રાત્રિ એમ બે ભાગમાં વહેચાયેલું છે. બ્રહ્માના દિવસના બે ભાગ એટલે સતયુગ અને ત્રેતાયુગ અને બ્રહ્માની રાતના બે ભાગ એટલે દ્વાપરયુગ અને કળયુગ. એમ ચાર યુગનું સૃષ્ટિચક્ર અનાદિ સમયથી ચાલતું આવ્યું છે અને અનંત સુધી ચાલતું રહેશે. આ ચક્રમાં બ્રહ્માનો દિવસ અર્થાત સતયુગ,ત્રેતાયુગ તે જ્ઞાનરૂપી પ્રકાશ અથવા ઉજાસ નું પ્રતિક છે તેમજ બ્રહ્માની રાત્રિ અર્થાત દ્વાપરયુગ, કળયુગ તે અજ્ઞાન રૂપી અંધકારનું પ્રતિક છે. તેમાં પણ કળયુગનો અંતિમ સમય એટલે ઘોર અંધકારનો સમય અતિ ધર્મગ્લાનિનો સમય. આ સમયે સમગ્ર વિશ્વમાં દુઃખ, અશાંતિ, ભય, ચિંતા, હિંસા,પાપચાર દુરાચાર ભ્રષ્ટાચાર વ્યાપેલો હોય છે. આવા સમયે સ્વયં શિવ પરમાત્મા, ગીતામાં પોતે આપેલા વચન અનુસાર, સૃષ્ટિ પરીવર્તન અર્થે દિવ્ય અવતરણ કરે છે અને કળયુગી દુનીયાનો વિનાશ કરાવી નવી સતયુગી દુનિયાની સ્થાપના કરે છે. અજ્ઞાન રૂપી ઘોર અંધકાર ના સમયે પરમાત્મા શિવનું બ્રહ્મા તનમાં અવતરણ થતું હોવાથી શિવરાત્રિ કહેવાય છે.
આજના સમય પર દ્રષ્ટિપાત કરીએ તો તમે જરૂર સમ્મત થશો કે આજનો આ વર્તમાન સમય એ કળીકાલનો ઘોર અંધકારનો અંતિમ સમય ચાલી રહ્યો છે. શિવ પરમાત્માનું બ્રહ્માના તનમાં અવતરણ થઈ ચુક્યું છે. વર્તમાન સમયે જ્યારે તેવો જ્ઞાન તેમજ યોગની શિક્ષા આપી આપણને કામ, ક્રોધ, લોભ, મોહ, અહંકાર જેવા મહાવિકારોથી મુક્ત કરી દૈવી દુનિયાની સ્થાપના કરી રહ્યા છે ત્યારે શિવરાત્રિનું મહત્વ વધી જાય છે. આ સંધર્ભમાં સાચા અર્થમાં આપણે શિવરાત્રિ ત્યારે માનવી ગણાય જ્યારે આપણે વર્તમાન સમયે પરમાત્મા શિવ જે જ્ઞાન યોગની શિક્ષા આપી રહ્યા છે તેને સમજીને, આપણાં જીવનમાં દૈવી ગુણોને ધારણ કરીને, આપણાં જીવનને શ્રેષ્ઠ બનાવીએ
શિવરાત્રિના પર્વની ઉજવણીના ભાગરૂપે આપણે શિવ મંદિરમાં જઇ અનેક રીતે પુજા-અર્ચન કરીએ છીએ. પરંતુ વર્તમાન સમયે પરમાત્મા શિવ દ્વારા અપાઈ રહેલા જ્ઞાન યોગની શિક્ષાને સમજીને આ ક્રિયાઓ કરીશું તો વધુ સાર્થક તેમજ લાભકારક થશે.
શિવ પરમાત્માના પ્રતિકસમ શિવલિંગ પર ચંદનથી કરવામાં આવતી ત્રણ આડી રેખાઓ, જે ત્રિપુંડ કહેવાય છે, તેનું પણ રહસ્ય છે. સૃષ્ટિચક્રના કળયુગના અંતિમ સમયે અવતરિત થઈ પરમાત્મા શિવ ત્રણ દેવતા દ્વારા ત્રણ કર્તવ્યો કરે છે. શંકર દ્વારા કળયુગી તમોપ્રધાન સૃષ્ટિનો વિનાશ, બ્રહ્મા દ્વારા નુતન સતયુગી દુનિયાની સ્થાપના તેમજ વિષ્ણુ દ્વારા નવી સતયુગી દુનિયની પાલના. ત્રિપુંડ એ પરમાત્મા શિવ દ્વારા ત્રણ દેવતાઓના માધ્યમ દ્વારા કરવામાં આવતા આ ત્રણ કર્તવ્યોની પ્રતિકાત્મક યાદગાર છે.
શિવનું અર્ચન-પૂજન ત્રણ પાનવાળા બિલીપત્રો ચઢાવી કરવામાં આવે છે. આ પણ પ્રતિકાત્મક તેમજ સાંકેતિક છે. વાસ્તવમાં જે વ્યક્તિ તન–મન–ધનથી શિવ પરમાત્માને સમર્પિત થાય છે તેના પર શિવજી પ્રસન્ન થાય છે. જો આ ભાવનાથી બિલીપત્ર ચઢાવમાં આવે તો શિવ પરમાત્માના વધુ કૃપાપાત્ર બનીશું.
શિવલિંગ ઉપર જળાધારીમાંથી વહેતી જળધારા એ બ્રહ્મા મુખ દ્વારા પરમાત્મા શિવે વહાવેલી જ્ઞાનધારાનું પ્રતિક છે. આ જ્ઞાનબિંદુઓનાં સ્મરણ દ્વારા શિવ પરમાત્માનું મહિમાગાન કરવાનું રહસ્ય છુપાએલું છે. દૂધ દ્વારા સ્નાન કરાવવાનો અર્થ સ્વચ્છ તેમજ પવિત્ર મન દ્વારા શિવને સમર્પિત થવાનો સંકેત છે.
શિવ મંદીરમાં પ્રવેશતા જ પોઠીયાની પ્રતિમા મુકવામાં આવે છે. પોઠીયાને શિવ પરમાત્માનું વાહન માનવામાં આવે છે. વાસ્તવમાં કળયુગના અંતે શિવ પરમાત્માનું અવતરણ બ્રહ્માના તનમાં થાય છે. એટલે પોઠીયો એ બ્રહ્માની યાદગાર છે.

શિવલિંગના ગર્ભ દ્વાર પાસે કાચબાનું પ્રતિક પણ મુકવામાં આવે છે. કાચબાની વિશેષતા છે કે તે પોતાનું કામ પૂર્ણ થયે પોતાની કર્મેન્દ્રિઓને સંકેલી લે છે. તેજ રીતે સદાશિવની આરાધના માટે આપણે પણ કાચબાની જેમ મનને બધી બાબતોથી સંકેલી લઈ મનને એકાગ્ર કરવું જરૂરી છે.
દેવી દેવતાઓના મંદિરમાં જવા પગથિયાં ઉપર ચઢવા પડે છે, જ્યારે શિવલિંગ સમીપે જવા માટે પગથિયાં ઉતરવા પડે છે. આમાં અંતરમુખી બની અંતરદર્શન દ્વારા શિવને પામવાનો સંકેત સમાયેલો છે.
દેવી-દેવતાઓની મૂર્તિની સ્થાપના મંદિરના મુખ્યદ્વારથી પ્રવેશ કરાવીને થાય છે, જ્યારે શિવલિંગની સ્થાપના મંદિરના શિખર ઉપરથી નીચે ઉતારીને કરવામાં આવે છે. આની પાછળનું રહસ્ય એ છે કે જ્યોતિબિંદુ પરમાત્મા પરમધામથી અવતરણ કરે છે, જ્યારે સતયુગમાં દેવી-દેવતાઓનો જન્મ ધરતી પર થાય છે.
મહાશિવરાત્રિના ઉપરોક્ત રહસ્યોને સમજીને પર્વની ઉજવણી કરીશું તો વધુ સાર્થક તેમજ લાભદાયક રહેશે.
