એરોપ્લેનથી અને સી-પ્લેન એ બન્નેમાં તફાવત એટલો જ કે એરોપ્લેન લેન્ડીગ અને ટેક-ઓફ જમીન પર કરે છે જ્યારે સી-પ્લેન જળ સપાટી પર એટલે કે સમુદ્ર, નદી કે તળાવ પર લેન્ડ અને ટેક-ઓફ કરી શકે છે. આગામી ૩૧ ઓક્ટોબરે વડાપ્રધાન નરેન્દ્ર મોદી સી-પ્લેન સેવાનું લોકાર્પણ કરવાના છે.
અમદાવાદ આવેલા આ ટ્વિન-ઓટર્સ સી-પ્લેનનો વજન ૩૩૭૭ કિલોગ્રામ છે. ૧૪૧૯ લીટર ક્ષમતાની બળતણ ટાંકી ધરાવે છે, મહત્તમ ૫૬૭૦ કિ.ગ્રા. વજન સાથે ઉડી શકે છે. સી-પ્લેન ૧૫.૭૭ મિટર (૫૧ ફુટ) લાંબુ અને ૫.૯૪ મીટર (૧૯ ફુટ) ઉંચું છે.

કેપ્ટન અજય ચૌહાણના જણાવ્યા મુજબ સી પ્લેન PT6A-34 પ્રકારના સિંગલ સ્ટેજ ફ્રી ટર્બાઇન વાળા બે એન્જિન ધરાવે છે. ઉડાન વખતે સી-પ્લેનમાં પ્રતિ કલાક ૨૭૨ કિ.ગ્રા. બળતણની ખપત થાય છે.
સી-પ્લેનની ડાબી બાજુ ૧.૨૭ * ૧.૪૫ મીટરનો દરવાજો આવેલો છે. સી-પ્લેન ૧૯ પેસેન્જરની ક્ષમતા ધરાવે છે. સી-પ્લેન સામાન્ય પેસેન્જર પ્લેનથી તદ્દન જુદા પડે છે. પરંપરાગત પેસેન્જર પ્લેન સંપૂર્ણ કમ્પ્યુટર કંટ્રોલ સિસ્ટમ ધરાવે છે આથી સામાન્ય પેસેન્જર પ્લેનના પાયલોટ માટે લેન્ડિંગ અને ટેક ઓફ એ મુખ્ય કામગીરી રહે છે.
કેપ્ટન અજય ચૌહાણે વધુમાં કહ્યું કે, સી-પ્લેનમાં કોમ્પ્યુટર કંટ્રોલ્સ હોતા નથી વળી તે લો અલ્ટીટ્યુડ પર ( ઓછી ઊંચાઈ પર) ઉડે છે જ્યાં પાઇલટના હાથમાં જ તમામ નિયંત્રણ હોય છે. એરોપ્લેન જમીનની સ્થિર સપાટી પર લેન્ડિંગ અને ટેક ઓફ કરે છે જ્યારે સી પ્લેનનું ટેક ઓફ અને લેન્ડિંગ તરલ અને ગતિશીલ એવી જળ સપાટી પર થાય છે. આથી સી-પ્લેનના પાયલોટની કામગીરી વધું પડકાર જનક હોય છે.
સી-પ્લેનની શોધનો શ્રેય ફ્રાંસના હેન્રી ફેબરને જાય છે. ૧૯૧૦માં તેણે ૫૦ હોર્સ પાવર વાળુ સી-પ્લેન ઉડાવેલુ. બ્રિટિશ કંપની સુપરમરીને ઇંગ્લેન્ડ અને ફ્રાંસ વચ્ચે ઇ.સ. ૧૯૧૯ માં સૌપ્રથમ ફ્લાઈંગ બોટ સર્વિસ શરૂ કરી હતી. ૧૯૩૦માં અમેરિકા અને યુરોપ વચ્ચે વાહન વ્યવહારના એક માધ્યમ તરીકે સી-પ્લેનનો બહોળો ઉપયોગ થવા લાગ્યો જેણે સાઉથ અમેરિકા, આફ્રિકા, અને એશિયા વચ્ચે વાહન વ્યવહારના નવા દ્વાર ખોલી આપ્યાં. સી-પ્લેનના કારણે ૧૯૩૧માં ઈંગ્લેન્ડથી ટપાલ ઓસ્ટ્રેલિયા ૧૬ દિવસમાં પહોંચવા લાગી હતી.
સી-પ્લેન તેની ડિઝાઇન અને સ્ટ્રક્ચરને કારણે અત્યંત વધું ઝડપ કે વધૂં ઉંચાઇ પ્રાપ્ત કરી શકતું નથી. સી-પ્લેન જ્યાં જળાશયો ઉપલબ્ધ નથી તેવા જમીની વિસ્તારોમાં બિનઉપયોગી છે તેથી તેનો ઉપયોગ પણ મર્યાદીત છે.
બીજા વિશ્વયુદ્ધ દરમિયાન મિત્ર રાષ્ટ્રોએ પ્રશાંત મહાસાગરના દુરદરાજના ટાપુઓ સુધી પહોંચવા સી-પ્લેનનો ખુબ ઉપયોગ કરેલો. બીજા વિશ્વયુદ્ધ દરમિયાન જ ધરી રાષ્ટ્રોમાંના જર્મનીએ Blohm & Voss BV-238 નામનું સૌથી ભારે અને મોટું સી-પ્લેન ઉડાવ્યું હતું.
આમ બીજા વિશ્વયુદ્ધમાં સી-પ્લેનનો બહોળો ઉપયોગ થયો હતો. સી-પ્લેનનો સૌથી મોટો ફાયદો એ હતો કે તેના માટે એરપોર્ટની જરૂર ન હતી અને યુદ્ધ દરમિયાન નવા એરપોર્ટ બનાવવાનો ખર્ચો પણ બચતો હતો. જો કે બીજા વિશ્વયુદ્ધ બાદ પેસેન્જર પ્લેન અને તે માટેના એરપોર્ટમાં રોકાણ વધતા સી-પ્લેનનું ચલણ ઘટતું ગયું હતું. ત્યારબાદની નવી શોધ-તકનીકો અને એડવેન્ચર ટુરિઝમ વધતા સી-પ્લેનને ફરી સાંપ્રત બન્યું છે.
