દ્રોણાચાર્યે કૌરવા તથા પાંડવોને ધનુર્વિદ્યા અને અનેક પ્રકારની શસ્ત્રવિદ્યામાં પારંગત કરવા માડ્યા ત્યારે કેટલાક બીજા રાજાઓ અને રાજ પુત્રો એમની પાસે અસ્ત્ર-શસ્ત્ર વિદ્યા શિખવા માટે આવવા માડ્યા. વૃષ્ણીઓ અધકો અને કર્ણે પણ એમની પાસે આવીને વિદ્યા શીખી.
અર્જુન ધનુરવિદ્યાનુ વધુમા વધુ જ્ઞાન મેળવવા હંમેશા દ્રોણાચાર્ય પાસે જ રહેતો હતો તે તેમનો લાડલો શિષ્ય હતો. દ્રોણાચાર્ય પોતે પણ તેનુ વિશેષ ધ્યાન રાખતા. અર્જુનની ગુરુભકિત્ અને તેની શ્રધ્ધા અને તેની વિદ્યા થી પ્રસન્ન થઈને તેમને વચન આપ્યુ કે તે એ વાતનો ખ્યાલ રાખશે કે આ ધરતી પર તેના જેવો કોઈ બાણવીર નહિ બને. નિષાદરાજ હિરણ્યધનુનો પુત્ર એક્લ્વ્ય પણ તેમની પાસે શિક્ષા લેવા માંગતો હતો પણ દ્રોણાચાર્યે કહ્યુ કે ' મારી પાસે બધા રાજકુમારો જ આવે છે અને તુ એક ભીલપુત્ર છે. તને શીખવાડુ તો રાજકુમારો નારાજ થશે, એટલે તુ મારો શિષ્ય નહિ બની શકે.

પરંતુ એકલવ્ય નિરાશ ન થયો. એણે દ્રોણાચાર્યને વંદી, મનોમન તેમને ગુરુ માની ત્યાંથી પ્રયાણ કર્યુ. પછી જંગલમાં જઈને એમની માટીની મૂર્તિ બનાવી, અને એમની આગળ ધનુરવિદ્યા શિખવાની શરુ કરી. ગુરુએ શિષ્યનો સ્વીકાર ન કર્યો તો શુ થયુ શિષ્યે તો તેમને ગુરુ માની લીધા હતાને? જેથી કરીને એની ભાવનાનો વિજ્ય થયો.અને એની સફળતાનો માર્ગ મોક્ળો થયો.
એકવાર ગુરુની આજ્ઞાથી કૌરવો અને પાંડવો શિકાર માટે રથમાં બેસીને વનમા જતા હતા ત્યારે તેમણે શિકાર કરવાના સાધન અને કૂતરા સાથે ફરતા કોઈ માનવને જોયો. કૂતરો જંગલના રસ્તે એકલો આગળ વઘીને ધનુર્વિદ્યાના પ્રયોગો કરતા એકલવ્ય પાસે પહોચી ગયો.
જટાધારી એકલવ્યને જોઈને તે ભસવા માંડ્યો, એટલે એકલવ્યે તેને ભસતો બંધ કરવા માટે એના મુખમાં કુશળતાપૂર્વક સાતબાણ માર્યા.એ બાણ થી કૂતરો મર્યો પણ નહિ કે ઘાયલ પણ ના થયો. બસ મૂગો બની ગયો. એવી જ અવસ્થામાં એ પાંડવો પાસે આવીને ઉભો રહ્યો ત્યારે પાંડવો તેને જોઈને આશ્ચર્યચકિત થઈ ગયા. એમની બુધ્ધિ કે સમજ શકિત કાઈ કામ ન કરી શકી. આવી કુશળવિદ્યા તેમણે ક્યાંય જોઈ નહોતી કે એની કલ્પના પણ નહોતી કરી.
તે આતુરતાપૂર્વક એ શૂરવીર્ ને જોવા વનની અંદર ગયા. પણ એકલવ્યનુ બાહ્યરુપ બદલાઈ ગયુ હોવાથી તેને ઓળખી શક્યા નહિ. એકલવ્યે પોતાની ઓળખાણ આપતા જણાવ્યુ કે ' હું હિરણ્ય ધનુનો પુત્ર અને દ્રોળાચાર્યનો શિષ્ય છું.
તેનો પરિચય પામીને તેની પ્રશંસા કરતા-કરતા તેઓ ગુરુ પાસે ગયા અને બધી વાત કરી. દ્રોળાચાર્યને ધણું આશ્ચર્ય થયુ કે 'મારો એક પણ શિષ્ય આટલો નિપુણ નથી તો પછી આ કોણ છે જેને હું નથી શિખવાડ્યુ છતાંય તે મારો શિષ્ય છે. જ્યારે તેમણે અર્જુનની સામે જોયુ તો એના ચેહરાના ઈર્ષાના ભાવને જોઈને એના મનની વાત સમજી ગયા. તેમણે મનોમન કશુ વિચાર્યુ અને તે અર્જુનને લઈને એકલવ્ય પાસે ગયા.
એકલવ્ય તેમણે ઓળખીને એમના ચરણોમાં પડીને એમનુ વિધિપૂર્વક પૂજન કર્યુ.તેને હાથ જોડીને પોતાની શિષ્ય તરીકે ઓળખાણ આપી, એટલે દ્રોણાચાર્યે કહ્યુ kકે તે મારી મરજી વગર મને ગુરુ બનાવીને વિદ્યાતો મેળવી લીધી તો હવે ગુરુદક્ષિણા પણ આપવી પડશે.એકલવ્યે ગુરુદક્ષિણામાં સર્વ કાંઈ સમર્પિત કરવાની તૈયારી બતાવી. દ્રોણાચાર્યતો અર્જુન પ્રતિ શિષ્ય પ્રેમમાં પોતાની મહાનતા પણ ભૂલી ગયા હતા અને તેમણે પોતાની મહાનતાને ન શોભે તેવી માંગણી કરી અને એકલવ્ય પાસે જમણા હાથનો અંગૂઠો માંગી લીધો જમણાં હાથનો અંગૂઠો એટલે ધનુર્વિદ્યાની જીવાદોરી, એના વગર આ વિદ્યાની કલ્પના કરી જ ના શકાય.
એકલવ્ય અગર ઈચ્છા રાખતતો એ ના પાડી શકતો હતો, પણ તેને પોતાના વિદ્યાની લાજ રાખીને તરતજ પોતાના જમણા હાથનો અંગૂઠો કાપી આપીને સાચા શિષ્યની ઓળખાણ આપી અને પોતાની સમર્પણભાવના ને કારણે અમર બન્યો.
