ઓછા વરસાદવાળાં અને દુષ્કાળોનો સામનો કરી ચૂકેલાં ગુજરાત અને રાજસ્થાનમાં અનેક વાવ આવેલી છે. હાલમાં પણ આ રાજ્યના અનેક વિસ્તારો પાણીની અછત અને દુષ્કાળનો સામનો કરી રહ્યા છે, ત્યારે પ્રાચીન સમયમાં પાણીના સંગ્રહ માટેની પદ્ધતિ આજે પણ ઉપયોગી થઈ શકે છે. ગુજરાતી સ્થાપત્યનો ઉત્તમ નમૂનો ગણાતી વાવ માત્ર પુરાતન સ્થળ જ નથી, પરંતુ તેની સાથે સંસ્કૃતિની એક પરંપરા સંકળાયેલી છે.

'એક વાવમાં, હજાર પગથિયાં ઊતરીને તરસ ભાંગી'તી, ને બહાર નીકળ્યો ત્યારે હજાર પગથિયાં ચઢ્યાંના થાકે પાછું સૂકાઈ ગયું ગળું,

આપણે મળીને છૂટા પડીએ ત્યારે, યાદ આવે છે એ વાવ.'

સૌમ્ય જોશીની આ કવિતામાં વાવ હવે ફકત યાદ બનીને રહી ગઈ છે, જે એક જમાનામાં લોકજીવન અને સંસ્કૃતિનો અભિન્ન હિસ્સો હતી.

ગુજરાતની વાવનો ઇતિહાસ

એમ. અમ્રિતલિંગમના પુસ્તક 'ઇકૉલૉજિકલ ટ્રેડિશન્સ ઑફ ઇન્ડિયા' - વૉલ્યુમ 11 - ગુજરાતમાં લખ્યું છેઃ "ભારતીય સ્થાપત્યના ઇતિહાસમાં કૂવા અને વાવે ખૂબ અગત્યની ભૂમિકા નિભાવી છે. છેક મોહેં-જો-દડો અને હડપ્પાનાં નગરોના અવશેષો મળ્યા તેમાં પણ વાવ અને કૂવાઓનું અસ્તિત્વ જોઈ શકાય છે."

"વેદોમાં પણ વાવનો ઉલ્લેખ જોવા મળે છે અને વાવને પાણીના દેવ તરીકે શ્રદ્ધા અને આશીર્વાદનું સ્વરૂપ ગણાવવામાં આવે છે, કારણ કે એ દુષ્કાળમાં પાણી પૂરું પાડે છે."

પુસ્તકમાં થયેલા ઉલ્લેખ મુજબ ભારતના પશ્ચિમ-પૂર્વીય વિસ્તારોમાં ઈ.સ. પૂર્વે 600 વર્ષથી વાવનું અસ્તિત્વ હોવાનું અનુમાન છે. આજથી આઠસો વર્ષ પહેલાં સુંદર અને ભવ્ય વાવ બંધાયેલી જોઈ શકાય છે. જે પરંપરા મુઘલ કાળ અને અંગ્રેજોના વખતમાં પણ જળવાઈ રહી. વાવ મોટા ભાગે ઓછા વરસાદવાળા વિસ્તારોમાં બંધાતી હોવાથી રાજસ્થાન અને ગુજરાતમાં તેનું પ્રમાણ વધુ જોવા મળે છે.

અલગઅલગ પ્રદેશોમાં વાવ જુદાંજુદાં નામથી ઓળખાય છે.

જેમ કે હિન્દી ભાષી પ્રાંતમાં વાવને 'બાવડી' કહે છે, ગુજરાત અને રાજસ્થાનના મારવાડ વિસ્તારમાં 'વાવ', કન્નડમાં 'કલ્યાણી' અથવા 'પુષ્કરણી' તેમજ મરાઠીમાં તેને 'બારવ' કહે છે.

વાવનું બાંધકામ અને સ્થાપત્ય

'ઇકૉલૉજિકલ ટ્રેડિશન્સ ઑફ ઇન્ડિયા - વૉલ્યુમ 11 - ગુજરાત'માં જણાવ્યા પ્રમાણે "વાવ પાણીનો એવો માનવસર્જિત સ્રોત છે, જેમાં પગથિયાં ઊતરીને પાણી સુધી પહોંચી શકાય છે. ઉપરથી બંધ ઢાંચો કલાકારીગરીથી કંડારેલો પણ હોય છે."

"તેનો મુખ્ય ઉદ્દેશ તો દુષ્કાળના સમયમાં પાણી પૂરું પાડવાનો હતો."

"તેના બે-ત્રણથી વધુ માળ હોય છે. એ રીતે વાવ એ ટેક્નૉલૉજી, સ્થાપત્ય અને કળાનો એક સુંદર સમન્વય છે."

અમદાવાદ અને ગાંધીનગર વિસ્તારની વાવનો અભ્યાસ કરનારા અમદાવાદના અર્બન મૅનેજમૅન્ટ સેન્ટરના ડિરેક્ટર મન્વિતા બારાડી વાવના એન્જિનિયરિંગ વિશે વાત કરતાં જણાવે છે,

"પથરાળ, રેતાળ કે પોચી દરેક પ્રકારની જમીનમાં વાવ બનેલી જોઈ શકાય છે. જમીનમાં ઊંડે સુધી જવા તમે એક સુંદર સર્જનાત્મક અનુભવમાંથી પસાર થાઓ છો. ગુજરાતી સ્થાપત્યનું આ એક અનોખું સૌંદર્ય છે."

તેમણે આગળ જણાવ્યું, "સામાન્ય રીતે જમીનની અંદર ત્રણથી સાત કે આઠ માળ સુધીનું ઊંડું બાંધકામ કરવામાં આવે છે."

"જેમાં સ્લોપ સિસ્ટમ હોય છે, અંદરની પાટો અને સ્તંભો સ્થિતિસ્થાપકતા જાળવી રાખવાનું કામ કરે છે.

"આ સ્તંભો અને પાટો પરની દીવાલોને કલાત્મક ચિત્રો અને મૂર્તિઓ કંડારીને સુંદર બનાવાય છે."

"આ બાંધકામ રચનાને કારણે જ તે વિવિધ પ્રકારની કુદરતી હોનારતો સામે પણ અડીખમ રહી શકે છે."

વાવને ચાર પ્રકારમાં વહેંચવામાં આવી છે

નંદા - રચના સરળ હોય અને પગથિયાં ઊતરીને કુંડ સુધી પહોંચી શકાય. આ પ્રાથમિક પ્રકારની રચના છે.

ભદ્ર - કુંડની બે બાજુ પગથિયાંથી જવાનો રસ્તો હોય.

જયા- ત્રણ તરફથી નીચે ઊતરી શકાય.

વિજયા - વિજયા જયાથી થોડી મોટી અને વિશિષ્ટ રચના ધરાવતી હોય.

પાણીના સંગ્રહ માટે કલાત્મક સ્થાપત્યની શી જરૂર?

જો મુસાફરોને પાણી જ પિવડાવવાનો હેતુ હોય તો માત્ર કૂવો કેમ નહીં? આવી વિશાળ અને કલાત્મક સ્થાપત્ય ધરાવતી વાવ બાંધવાનો હેતુ શો?

મન્વિતા બારાડી વાવની સર્જનાત્મકતા પાછળનાં કારણો આપતાં કહે છે, "ગુજરાત અને રાજસ્થાનનો જે સૂકો પ્રદેશ છે ત્યાં આ પરંપરા વધુ વિકસી છે."

"ઉપરાંત જ્યાં જ્યાં વાવ વધુ વિકસી તે વેપારી માર્ગો હતા એમ પણ કહી શકાય. આ માર્ગો પરથી એક શહેરથી બીજા શહેરમાં જઈ શકાતું હતું."

"જે પ્રદેશની પ્રજા વધુ સમૃદ્ધ હતી ત્યાં વધુ વિશાળ સ્થાપત્યો બંધાયાં. પહેલાંના સમયમાં વાવ, મહેલો કે સ્થાપત્યો બંધાવવાં એ પોતાની સમૃદ્ધિ દર્શાવવાનું પણ એક માધ્યમ હતું."

"એ વેપારમાર્ગ કેટલો મહત્ત્વનો અને કયા શેઠે કે રાજાએ કેટલાં દાનથી વાવ બંધાવી તેના પર તેની ભવ્યતા અને કલાત્મકતાનો આધાર રહેલો છે. પણ મૂળે તો પાણી સુધી પહોંચવાની વાત છે."

"વાવને આર્કિટેક્ચરલ ઍક્સ્પ્રેશન કહી શકાય. જમીનની અંદર જળસપાટી સુધી તો કોઈ પણ રીતે પહોંચવાનું જ છે, તો એક પછી એક માળ ઊતરીને સર્જનાત્મકતાનો અનુભવ કરતાં કેમ ન જઈ શકાય?"

પુસ્તક 'ધ સ્ટેપવેલ્સ ઑફ ગુજરાત - ઇન આર્ટ હિસ્ટોરિકલ પર્સ્પેક્ટિવ'માં જણાવ્યા અનુસાર, "વાવ બનાવવા પાછળનો મૂળ હેતુ તો પાણીનો એક સ્રોત ઊભો કરવાનો જ હતો. નદી, તળાવ કે કુંડથી અલગ કૂવા અને વાવનું પાણી સીધું સૂર્યપ્રકાશના સંપર્કમાં ન આવતું હોવાથી પાણી લાંબા સમય સુધી સંગ્રહાયેલું રહેતું અને ભૂગર્ભજળ આપોઆપ આવતું."

વાવને ધર્મ સાથે શું સંબંધ?

ઘણી વાવની બહાર આજે મંદિરો જોવા મળે છે. તો શું ખરેખર વાવને ધર્મ સાથે કોઈ સંબંધ છે?

આ અંગે મન્વિતા બારાડી જણાવે છે, "વાવ એક બિનસાંપ્રદાયિક સ્થળ છે, જ્યાં દરેક ધર્મ કે દરેક સમાજની વ્યક્તિ આવીને આશરો લઈ શકે છે. પહેલાંના સમયમાં રાજાઓ કે વેપારીઓ રસાલા સાથે પ્રવાસ કરતા."

"ત્યારે દરેક લોકો ત્યાં આરામ કરી શકે, ભોજન બનાવીને જમી શકે, પાણી પી શકે કે ભરી શકે, પશુઓ માટેના હવાડા પણ આસપાસ હોય- તે દરેક હેતુ વાવથી સરતા હતા. ઉપરાંત આ એક સામાજિક મેળાવડાનું સ્થાન હતું."

"ધીમેધીમે કારીગરોએ કોતરણીકામમાં પાણીના મૉટિફનો ઉપયોગ શરૂ કર્યો. જેમાં પાણીની દેવી કે કાચબા જેવા પાણીનાં વિવિધ પ્રાણીઓ આવ્યાં. બાકી આમાં હિન્દુ કે મુસ્લિમ એવું કશું છે જ નહીં."

"પાછળનાં વર્ષોમાં આ રીતે ધાર્મિક પાસાંઓ જરૂર ઉમેરાયાં, પરંતુ વાવના બાંધકામનો હેતુ ક્યારેય ધાર્મિક નહોતો. ત્યાં બેસીને કોઈ પૂજા નહોતા કરતા. છેલ્લાં 50 વર્ષમાં કદાચ આ જગ્યાઓ મંદિરોમાં પરિણમી એવું બની શકે."

જ્યારે પૂર્ણિમા મહેતા ભટ્ટના પુસ્તક 'હર સ્પેસ, હર સ્ટોરી - એક્સપ્લૉરિંગ ધ સ્ટેપવેલ્સ ઑફ ગુજરાત' અનુસાર, "સોલંકીકાળમાં રાણી ઉદયમતી દ્વારા બંધાવવામાં આવેલી પાટણની રાણકી વાવમાં બ્રાહ્મણવાદી હિંદુવાદ દર્શાવતું સ્થાપત્ય જોઈ શકાય છે. જેમાં બ્રહ્મા, વિષ્ણુ, ગણેશ અને શક્તિ સાથે શિવ, 24 પ્રકારના વિષ્ણુ, વામન, રામ, બલરામ, બુદ્ધ ને કલ્કી સહિતના અવતારો કંડારાયેલા છે."

રાણકી વાવમાં કંડારાયેલી નાયિકા, લક્ષ્મી, સ્થાનિક દેવીઓ, પાર્વતી, દુર્ગા, ક્ષેમંકરી દેવી, ઉમા-મહેશ્વર, સૂર્યાણી, સપ્તમાત્રિકા, સરસ્વતી તેમજ બાળક તેડીને ઊભેલી સ્ત્રી જેવાં સ્થાપત્યો કંડારવામાં આવ્યાં છે.

મહિલાઓ, રાણીઓને વાવ સાથે કેમ જોડી?

અન્ય સ્થાપત્યોની સરખામણીએ સ્ત્રીઓને વાવ સાથે વધુ જોડવામાં આવે છે.

આ અંગે અમદાવાદના અર્બન મૅનેજમૅન્ટ સેન્ટરના ડિરેક્ટર મન્વિતા બારાડીએ જણાવ્યું, "આપણા સામાજિક માળખા મુજબ સ્ત્રીઓ પાણી સાથે વધુ કામ લે છે. ઉપરાંત પાણીમાં પણ નારીતત્ત્વ રહેલું છે."

પાટણની વાવમાં વિવિધ દેવીઓની મૂર્તિઓ કંડારેલી જોઈ શકાય છે. ગાંધીનગરના અડાલજની વાવનું અધૂરું કામ રૂડીબાઈએ પૂરું કરાવેલું. એ જ રીતે દાદા હરિની વાવ ખરેખર દાઈ હરીરની વાવ છે.

પૂર્ણિમા મહેતા ભટ્ટ લિખિત પુસ્તક 'હર સ્પેસ, હર સ્ટોરી - એક્સપ્લૉરિંગ ધ સ્ટેપવેલ્સ ઑફ ગુજરાત'માં લખ્યું છે, "સામાન્ય રીતે ઘરેલુ વ્યવહારોમાં વ્યસ્ત મહિલાઓ પાણી ભરવાના બહાને બહાર જઈ શકતી અને આઝાદીનો અનુભવ કરી શકતી હતી. તેઓ બહારની દુનિયા સાથે સંપર્ક સાધી શકતી અને વાવના કલાત્મક અને શીતળભર્યા માહોલમાં શાંતિનો અનુભવ કરી શકતી હતી."

'સદીઓ પહેલાં પાણીની અછત ધરાવતા ગુજરાત પ્રદેશમાં વાવના કારણે જીવન અને ખેતી ટકી શક્યાં અને ફૂલ્યાં-ફાલ્યાં. ધરતી પર, ભૂમિગત અને ઈશ્વરી- આમ ત્રણ પ્રકારના વિશ્વને એકસાથે સાંકળતી વ્યવસ્થાની રચનામાં મહિલાઓની ભૂમિકા અગત્યની છે.'

'સામાન્ય રીતે વાવ પત્ની, માતા, સ્થાનિક દેવી અથવા પ્રેમિકાની યાદમાં બંધાવવામાં આવતી. જે મહિલાઓના એકત્ર થવાના સ્થળ ઉપરાંત મહિલાઓ, પાણી, સ્થાપત્ય અને ધર્મના એકબીજા સાથેના સંબંધને દર્શાવે છે.'

વાવની ભૌગોલિક સ્થિતિ અને મહત્ત્વ વિશે મન્વિતા બારાડી જણાવે છે, "આ આખો પટ્ટો છે, જ્યાં વાવની પરંપરા વિકસી. ગુજરાતથી લઈને રાજસ્થાન, પંજાબ અને દિલ્હીમાં પણ બાવડી જોઈ શકાય છે. ઈરાનમાં પણ સમાન પરંપરા જોઈ શકાય છે. આ સૂકા પ્રદેશનું એક ઍક્સ્પ્રેશન છે."

"આ સૂકા પ્રદેશમાં થતાં ઓછા વરસાદ અને દુષ્કાળનો પણ લાંબો ઇતિહાસ છે. મુસાફરોની તરસ છીપાવીને આરામ આપવાની સાથે વાવની ઊંડાઈ પરથી જળસ્તરનો અંદાજ લગાવી શકાય છે."

'ઇકૉલૉજિકલ ટ્રેડિશન્સ ઑફ ઇન્ડિયા - વૉલ્યુમ 11 - ગુજરાત'માં જણાવ્યા અનુસાર, "વાવની રચના એ રીતે કરવામાં આવતી કે તેમાં સીધો સૂર્યપ્રકાશ ન પ્રવેશી શકે. તેથી બાષ્પીભવન ટાળી શકાય. તેમજ જમીન પાણીમાં રહેલો વાયુ શોષી લે છે, તેથી પાણી શુદ્ધ સ્વરૂપે જળવાઈ રહે છે. આ વાવ એવી રીતે બાંધવામાં આવતી કે તે 7.6 સુધીના રિક્ટર સ્કેલના ભૂકંપ સામે અડીખમ રહી શકે છે."

આ અંગે મન્વિતા બારાડીએ જણાવ્યું હતું, "દુષ્કાળમાં મોટી ઇમારત બને તો વધુ લોકોને કામ મળે. લોકો તળાવ અને વાવ બંધાવતા. જેથી કુદરતી રીતે પ્રતિકૂળ પરિસ્થિતિમાં પણ તેઓ સન્માનપૂર્વક આર્થિક વળતર મેળવી શકતા. આ દાન અને શ્રેષ્ઠી પરંપરામાં લોકો દાન પણ વધુ પ્રમાણમાં આપતાં."

આજે વાવની શું દશા છે?

એમ. અમ્રિતલિંગમના પુસ્તક 'ઇકૉલૉજિકલ ટ્રેડિશન્સ ઑફ ઇન્ડિયા - વૉલ્યુમ 11 - ગુજરાત'માં થયેલા ઉલ્લેખ મુજબ ધીરે-ધીરે ભૂગર્ભજળનું સ્તર નીચે ઊતરતું જાય છે.

કૂવા કે વાવમાં સીધો સૂર્યપ્રકાશ ન પહોંચતાં લાંબા ગાળે જીવાત પેદા થતી. કેટલાંક સ્થળે લોકો રોજિંદાં કામો માટે આ પાણીનો ઉપયોગ કરતા થયા અને એને કારણે બીમાર થયા.

અંગ્રેજોના સમયમાં વાવ-કૂવાના પાણીથી લોકોના બીમારના થવાના કિસ્સાઓ વધવા લાગ્યા. પરિણામે અનેક કૂવા અને વાવને બૂરી દેવાના આદેશ આપવામાં આવ્યા. જેને કારણે કેટલીક વાવ અને કૂવાનું અસ્તિત્વ જોખમાયું.

ધીરે ધીરે આ સ્થળો પોતાનું મહત્ત્વ ગુમાવતા રહ્યાં. પુરાતન સ્થળોની પુરાતત્ત્વ વિભાગ કે રાજ્ય સરકાર દ્વારા જાળવણી નથી થતી તે માત્ર કચરા નાખવાનું એક સ્થળ બની ગયાં છે.
