1980ના દાયકાના અંત ભાગમાં લંડનમાં ઊછરી રહ્યો હતો ત્યારે કિશોરાવસ્થામાં હતો. તે વખતે નવી દિલ્હી અમારા સગાવહાલાને મળવા આવતો ત્યારે મારા માટે તે બીજી જ દુનિયામાં પગ મૂકવા સમાન હતું.
એ મુલાકાતો દરમિયાન હું બૅટમૅન કૉમિક્સ લેતો આવતો હતો અને અહીંથી હિંદુ પૌરાણિક કથાઓ વર્ણવતી અમરચિત્ર કથાની ચોપડીઓ લઈ જતો.
ચેરી કૉકનાં કૅન લાવતો અને તેના બદલામાં કેમ્પા કૉલા પીવા મળતી. લંડનમાં ચાર ટીવી ચેનલો જોવા મળતી હતી, દિલ્હીમાં એક જ હતી દૂરદર્શન.
લંડનમાં મારે નેઇબર્સ અને ઇસ્ટએન્ડર્સ સિરિયલ જોવી હોય તો માતાપિતાને પૂછવું પડતું હતું, પણ અહીં દિલ્હીમાં મારાં માતાપિતા, દાદાદાદી, કાકાકાકી, પિતરાઇ બધા આગ્રહ કરીને રામાયણ જોવા બેસાડી દેતા હતા.
હિંદુ મહાકાવ્ય રામાયણ પરથી બનેલી રામાનંદ સાગરની સિરિયલમાં 14 વર્ષનો વનવાસ ભોગવતા અને સીતાને દસ માથાવાળા રાવણની લંકામાંથી છોડાવીને લાવનારા ભગવાન રામની કથા હતી.
અંધકાર પર પ્રકાશનો વિજય થયો અને ભગવાન રામ પોતાના રાજ્ય અયોધ્યામાં પરત ફર્યા તે પ્રસંગના આધારે જ દીવાળીનો ઉત્સવ મનાવાય છે.
હિંદુ, શીખ અને જૈન સૌ કોઈ આ પર્વ મનાવે છે અને તે સાથે જ ઘણા પ્રદેશોમાં નવું વર્ષ પણ શરૂ થાય છે.
દિવાળી પહેલાંના દિવસોમાં ગામ, શહેર અને નગરોમાં શાળાઓ, સભાખંડો, બજારો અને ચોકમાં રામલીલા ભજવાતી રહે છે. ક્રિસમસ પહેલાંના દિવસોમાં ખ્રિસ્તીઓ ઉજવણી કરે છે તે રીતે જ.
1987 અને 1988ના 18 મહિના સુધી રામાયણ સિરિયલ ચાલતી રહી. 45 મિનિટના એક એવા 78 હપ્તા, દર રવિવારે સવારે ભારતની એક માત્ર ચેનલ દૂરદર્શન પર પ્રસારિત થતા રહ્યા હતા.
દેશભરમાં 8થી 10 કરોડ લોકો તેને જોવા બેસી જતા હતા. તે રીતે ભારતીય ઇતિહાસની તે સૌથી સફળ ટીવી સિરિયલ બની ગઈ હતી.
ભારતના સાંસ્કૃતિક વારસામાં રામાયણનું અદ્વિતિય સ્થાન હતું, તેથી સિરિયલને જબરદસ્ત લોકપ્રિયતા મળે તે સમજી શકાય તેવું હતું. પરંતુ કોઈને એવો અંદાજ નહોતો કે સિરિયલ અઠવાડિક ભક્તિનું એક માધ્યમ બની જશે.
NYUના મીડિયા સ્ટડીઝના પ્રોફેસર અને પૉલિટિક્સ આફ્ટર ટેલિવિઝન પુસ્તકના લેખક અરવિંદ રાજગોપાલ કહે છે તે પ્રમાણે ઉત્તર ભારતમાં જીવન થંભી જતું હતું. "ટ્રેન સ્ટેશનો પર અટકાવી દેવામાં આવતી હતી, બસો ઊભી રહી જતી હતી, મુસાફરો રસ્તા પર ટીવી શોધવા માટે નીકળી પડતા હતા."
"નાના ટીવી પાસે ભીડ એટલી થઈ જતી હતી કે દૂરથી કશું દેખાય પણ નહીં. કશું કાને પણ પડે નહીં, આમ છતાં લોકો ઊભા રહી જતા, કેમ કે ટીવી સામે હાજર રહેવાનો મહિમા હતો."

બીબીસીના દિલ્હી ખાતેના સંવાદદાતા સૌતિક બિશ્વાસે 2011માં લખ્યું હતું:
"મને યાદ છે કે રવિવારે સવારે સિરિયલને કારણે ભારત થંભી જતું હતું. શેરી સૂનકાર થઈ જતી, દુકાનો બંધ થઈ જતી. લોકો સ્નાન કરીને ટીવી જોવા બેસતા અને ટીવીને હાર પણ ચડાવતા હતા."
મારા દાદી માટે પણ રવિવારની સવાર મહત્ત્વની બની ગઈ હતી: સિરિયલનું પ્રસારણ શરૂ થાય તે પહેલાં તેઓ અગરબત્તી પ્રગટાવીને ઘરના મંદિરમાં પૂજા કરતા. તે પછી ખુલ્લા પગે નીચે બેસી જતા અને માથે ઓઢી લેતા હતા.
સાથે જ કુટુંબની ત્રણ પેઢી સિરિયલ જોવા બેસી જતી હતી.
મંદિરમાં દર્શન વખતે થતી તેવી રીતે સિરિયલ જોવાની વિધિ થતી હતી. મંદિરનાં દર્શન સિરિયલે ઘરે ઘરે અને જાહેરમાં જ્યાં ટીવી દેખાતું હતું ત્યાં પહોંચાડી દીધાં હતાં.
મંદિરમાં મૂર્તિની સામે જોઈને બેસવાનું હોય, તે રીતે ટીવીમાં હિંદુ દેવતા (રામ, લક્ષ્મણ, સીતા, હનુમાન) દર્શન આપતાં હતાં.
ભગવાન રામનું પાત્ર ભજવનારા અરુણ ગોવિલ કહે છે, "મંદિર દર્શન કરવા જેવા જેવું જ તે હતું. લોકો સિરિયલ શરૂ થાય તે પહેલાં પૂજા કરતા હતા, ટીવીને તિલક કરીને હાર પહેરાવતા હતા. લોકોમાં સિરિયલ માટે આવી ભાવના જાગી હતી,"
રામાયણના કારણે અરુણ ગોવિલનું જીવન પણ બદલાઈ ગયું. "હું જ્યાં પણ જતો, લોકો મારે પગે પડતા હતા. એટલું બધો આદર અને સન્માન મળતો હતો કે લોકો મને જોઈને ખુશીના આંસુ વહેવડાવવા લાગતા હતા."
તેઓ યાદ કરતાં કહે છે, "મેં વેશભૂષા સાથે વારાણસી શહેરની મુલાકાત લીધી તે વખતનું અખબારનું કટિંગ મેં સાચવી રાખ્યું છે. તેમાં મથાળું હતું કે ભગવાન રામને જોવા માટે દસ લાખ લોકો એકઠા થઈ ગયા હતા."
દેશભરમાં 'રામાયણનો જવર' ફેલાઇ ગયો હતો.
હિંદુઓમાં જાગૃત્તિ લાવનારા ઉદ્દીપક
રવિવાર 7 ઑગસ્ટ, 1988ના રોજ સિરિયલની સમાપ્તિ થઈ તેના એક અઠવાડિયા પછી પત્રકાર શૈલજા બાજપાઈએ ઇન્ડિયન એક્સપ્રેસ (પેજ 16)માં લખ્યું હતું : "ક્યારેય આવું જોવા મળ્યું નહોતું અને ભવિષ્યમાં ક્યારેય આવું બનશે નહીં."
"કન્યાકુમારીથી કાશ્મીર અને ગુજરાતથી ગોરખપુર, લાખો લોકો સિરિયલ જોવા માટે એકઠાં થઈ જતા હતા. સિરિયલ જોવા લોકો ધક્કામુક્કી કરતાં હતા, ઝઘડી પડતા હતા."
સમગ્ર ભારતમાં હિંદુઓમાં જાગૃત્તિ લાવનારા ઉદ્દીપક તરીકે આ સિરિયલને જોવામાં આવે છે.
તેના કારણે હિંદુ રાષ્ટ્રવાદ પણ જાહેર અને રાજકીય મંચ પર અગ્રક્રમે આવી ગયો હતો.
રામાયણનું પ્રસારણ થયું તે પહેલાં સુધી દૂરદર્શન પર ધાર્મિક કાર્યક્રમો ઓછા આવતા હતા, કેમ કે ભારત સાંપ્રદાયિક દેશ હોવાથી બધા ધર્મોને સરખું મહત્ત્વ અપાતું હતું.
રાજગોપાલ જણાવે છે તે પ્રમાણે, "રામાયણનું પ્રસારણ સાંપ્રદાયિક સર્વસંમતિમાં પ્રથમ મહત્ત્વનો ફેરફાર હતો. તે શ્રદ્ધાળુઓ અને ધાર્મિક વિધિવિધાનને સાનુકૂળ હતું. લોકપ્રિય પ્રતિસાદ મળ્યો હતો તે ભક્તિમય હતો."
"તે ભક્તિને રાજકીય સ્વરૂપ આપવા માટે રાજકીય પક્ષોએ સક્રિય થવું જરૂરી હતું."
2000ની સાલમાં ભારતના ફ્રન્ટલાઇન મૅગેઝીન સાથેની મુલાકાતમાં રાજગોપાલે કહ્યું હતું કે ભારત સરકારે રામાયણનું દેશવ્યાપી પ્રસારણ કરવાનું શરૂ કર્યું, તેના કારણે "દાયકા જૂનો ધાર્મિક બાબતોથી દૂર રહેવાનો નિષેધ તૂટી પડ્યો હતો, અને હિંદુ રાષ્ટ્રવાદીઓઓ તે તકનો ભરપૂર ફાયદો લીધો હતો."
"આ બધાના પરિણામે સ્વતંત્ર ભારતની કદાચ સૌથી મોટી પ્રચાર ઝુંબેશ ચાલી, જેના કારણે ભારતીય રાજકારણનું પોત સદાય માટે બદલાઈ ગયું."
"ધાર્મિક મહાકાવ્યનું પ્રસારણ અને તેને મળેલો લોકપ્રતિસાદ રાષ્ટ્રના એકીકરણ તરીકે જોવાયો અને હિંદુ જાગૃતિના વિચારને અનુમોદન મળતું જણાયું."
તે વખતે કૉંગ્રેસ સરકાર હતી, જે રામાયણ દૂરદર્શન પર દેખાડીને હિંદુ મતો લેવા માગતી હતી, પણ હિંદુ રાષ્ટ્રવાદી પક્ષ ભારતીય જનતા પક્ષ (ભાજપ)ને સૌથી વધુ ફાયદો થયો.
વડા પ્રધાન નરેન્દ્ર મોદીની આગેવાની હેઠળના ભાજપે 2014 અને 2019માં સંપૂર્ણ બહુમતી મેળવી હતી, જ્યારે 1998થી 2004 સુધી ભાજપની મોરચા સરકાર હતી.
રામાયણ સિરિયલના પ્રસારણ વખતે અને બાદમાં સંઘ પરિવારને હિંદુ જાગૃતિનો ફાયદો ઉઠાવીને તેના પર રાષ્ટ્રીય હિંદુ સજાગતા ઊભી કરવાની તક જણાઈ હતી.
જુદી જુદી હિંદુ જ્ઞાતિઓને એક કરીને 'રામ રાજ્ય' એટલે કે હિંદુ શાસન સ્થાપવાની તક પણ દેખાઈ હતી.
સિરિયલ પ્રસારિત થઈ રહી હતી તે વખતે અયોધ્યાની બાબરી મસ્જિદ માટે વિવાદ ચાલી જ રહ્યો હતો. હિંદુ રાષ્ટ્રવાદીઓનો દાવો છે કે રામજન્મભૂમિ પર મસ્જિદ ચણાયેલી છે.
હિંદુ રાષ્ટ્રવાદીઓએ રામજન્મભૂમિ માટે દેશભરમાં આંદોલન જગાવ્યું. ટીવી સિરિયલના રામ અને લક્ષ્મણના પાત્રોની વેશભૂષા સ્વંયસેવકોને પહેરાવીને આંદોલન ચલાવાયું હતું અને મસ્જિદની જગ્યાએ રામમંદિરના નિર્માણની માગણી જગાવી હતી.
રામમંદિરના નિર્માણ માટે ઇંટો એકત્રિત કરવાના અને એક એક રૂપિયો હિંદુઓ પાસેથી એકઠો કરવાના કાર્યક્રમો અપાયા હતા, જેથી ગરીબ અને અમીર સૌ કોઈ મંદિર નિર્માણમાં સહયોગ કરી શકે અને હિંદુ એકતાની ભાવના જાગે.
રાજગોપાલના જણાવ્યા અનુસાર રામાયણ સિરિયલમાં પણ આ આંદોલનનો પડઘો પડ્યો હતો.
તેઓ કહે છે, "એક દૃશ્યમાં એવું દર્શાવાયું હતું કે ભગવાન રામ પોતાના જન્મસ્થળની માટીને સાથે લઈને જઈ રહ્યા છે, અને રાજકીય આંદોલનનો ઉલ્લેખ કરે છે."
"હું જાણું છું ત્યાં સુધી રામાયણની કોઈ આવૃત્તિમાં આવી કોઈ કથા નથી. આ એ વાતનું ઉદાહરણ છે કે કેવી રીતે સિરિયલમાં રાજકારણ અને રાજકારણમાં સિરિયલના પડઘા પડ્યા હતા."
ડિસેમ્બર 1992માં હિંદુ જૂથોની જાહેરસભામાં દોઢ લાખથી વધુ લોકો - જેમાં કેટલાક રામાયણ સિરિયલનાં પાત્રોની વેશભૂષામાં પણ હતા - અયોધ્યામાં એકઠા થયા હતા.
16મી સદીમાં બનેલી મસ્જિદ પર ટોળું ઊમટી પડ્યું હતું અને મસ્જિદ તોડી પાડવામાં આવી હતી અને હિંસા ફેલાઈ હતી.
સમગ્ર દેશમાં કોમી રમખાણો થયાં હતાં. આજે પણ તે મુદ્દો જીવંત છે અને આગામી અઠવાડિયાંમાં ભારતની સર્વોચ્ચ અદાલત આ મામલામાં ચુકાદો આપે તેવી શક્યતા છે.
આ જમીન પર મંદિર હોવી જોઈએ કે મસ્જિદ કે બંને હોવા જોઈએ તે અંગે ચુકાદો આવે તેવી શક્યતા છે.
રામાયણ સિરિયલનાં પ્રતીકો અને રૂપકો આજેય ભારતીય રાજકારણમાં પ્રમુખપણે વ્યક્ત થતાં રહે છે.
દાખલા તરીકે 'રામરાજ્ય'ની કલ્પના હજીય જીવંત છે. વડા પ્રધાન મોદી અને ભાજપના પ્રમુખ અમિત શાહને ઘણી વાર રામ-લક્ષ્મણની જોડી તરીકે જોવામાં આવે છે.
તેના માટે રામાયણ સિરિયલ જવાબદાર નથી, પણ તેના કારણે હિંદુ પ્રતીકો સૌ કોઈ માટે સુલભ બન્યાં છે.
શાસન દ્વારા સ્પૉન્સર થતા આવા પ્રતીકોને કારણે હિંદુ જાહેરજીવન અને રાજકીયજીવનની નવી રીતે વ્યાખ્યા થતી રહે છે.
રાજગોપાલ કહે છે, "સમર્પિત હિંદુચરિત્ર ખડું કરવા માટેની હિંદુ રાષ્ટ્રવાદીઓની લાંબા સમયની ઇચ્છા હતી. આવું ચરિત્ર ખડું કર્યા પછી તમે રાષ્ટ્ર માટેનું ચરિત્ર પણ ખડું કરી શકો."
"દાયકા સુધી એવું મનાતું રહ્યું હતું કે આના માટે પાયાના સ્તરેથી કામ કરીને ઉપરની તરફ જવું પડશે. પરંતુ મીડિયાનો વ્યાપ વધ્યો તે પછી હવે ટીવી દ્વારા તે પ્રતીકાત્મક રીતે થઈ શકે છે અને ઉપરથી તે નીચે તરફ આવી શકે છે."
આધુનિક પૌરાણિક કથા
2018માં હિંદુસ્તાન ટાઇમ્સમાં રામાયણ સિરિયલની અસર વિશે નવેસરથી વિચારણા કરતાં લખાયું હતું કે "ભારતીય રાજકારણમાં હિંદુત્વ તરફનું પરિવર્તન આવ્યું તેની પશ્ચાદભૂમિમાં રામાનંદ સાગરની રામાયણ હતી."
"રાષ્ટ્રીય સ્વંયસેવક સંઘ અને તેની રાજકીય પાંખ ભારતીય જનતા પક્ષના નેજા હેઠળ આ થયું હતું."
"મીડિયા અને સાંસ્કૃત્તિક વિવેચકો સાગરની સિરિયલને એક યા બીજી રીતે મૂલવતા રહ્યા, પણ કેટલાક એવાય હતા જે તેને એક ઉદ્દીપક તરીકે જોઈ રહ્યા હતા. કદાચ અજાણપણે એમ થયું હશે, પણ તેના કારણે વમળો સર્જાયાં અને આંદોલન માટે ઉદ્દીપક બન્યું."
ઘણી બધી રીતે માત્ર પ્રતીકાત્મક કરતાં વધુ અસર સિરિયલની થઈ હતી.
હિંદુસ્તાન ટાઇમ્સના આ લેખ અનુસાર, "ટીવી સિરિયલને કારણે કેવો રાજકીય પ્રભાવ ઊભો થયો હતો, તેનો અંદાજ એના પરથી આવશે કે (રામનું પાત્ર ભજવનારા) અરુણ ગોવિલ અને સાગર બંનેને કૉંગ્રેસ અને ભાજપના નેતાઓ પોતાના માટે પ્રચાર કરવા માટે વિનવણીઓ કરતા રહ્યા હતા."
"આ ઉપરાંત અન્ય કલાકારો (સીતા બનેલા) દીપિકા ચિખલીયા અને (રાવણ) અરવિંદ ત્રિવેદી જેવાં કલાકારો આગળ જતા સંસદસભ્યો પણ બન્યાં."
સિરિયલના નિર્માતાએ જે સિરિયલને 'વિશ્વની સૌથી વધુ જોવાયેલી પૌરાણિક સિરીઝ' ગણાવી હતી, તેના કારણે ટીવી ભારતમાં ઘરે ઘરે પહોંચી ગયેલું માધ્યમ બની ગયું.
તેનાથી એ પણ સ્પષ્ટ થયું કે પ્રાચીન હિંદુ પરંપરા આધુનિકતા સાથે ચાલી શકે છે.
ભારતમાં 1990ના દાયકાની શરૂઆતથી મહત્ત્વના આર્થિક સુધારા અને ઉદારીકરણ શરૂ થયું હતું, તેની સાથે નવા જમાનાની ટેક્નૉલૉજી અને ઉપભોક્તાવાદ સાથે પણ તે કદમ મિલાવી શકે તેમ હતી.
સિરિયલ પૂરી થઈ ગઈ તેનાં 30 વર્ષ પછી આજેય રામાયણની અસર ભગવાન રામનું પાત્ર ભજવનાર કલાકાર પર પડી રહી છે.
અરુણ ગોવિલ કહે છે, "એક્ટર તરીકે આ સફળતા મારા માટે સારી સાબિત થઈ નહોતી, કેમ કે મને બીજા રોલ મળતા બંધ થઈ ગયા હતા."
"મને કહેવાતું કે તમારી રામ તરીકેની ઇમેજ બહુ સજ્જડ થઈ ગઈ છે. પ્રારંભમાં મને તેની ચિંતા થવા લાગી હતી, પણ તમે વાતને કઈ રીતે લો છો તેના પર તે નિર્ભર છે."
"આજે પણ મને યાદ કરવામાં આવે છે અને તે ભૂમિકા માટે માન આપવામાં આવે છે."
તેઓ હાલમાં ધ લિજેન્ડ ઑફ રામ નાટકમાં રામનું પાત્ર કરી રહ્યા છે. રામાયણની અસર આજેય અરુણ ગોવિલના જીવન પર પડી રહી છે, તે રીતે જ ભારત પર પણ રામાયણની અસર હજીય પડી રહી છે.
