ગુજરાતમાં સ્ટેચ્યૂ ઑફ યુનિટી' બનીને લગભગ તૈયાર થઈ ગઈ છે.
નર્મદા કિનારે કેવડીયા કૉલોનીથી આગળ સાધુ બેટ પર સરદાર પટેલની પ્રતિમા બનાવાઈ છે.
ગુજરાતના મુખ્ય પ્રધાન વિજય રૂપાણીએ આ પહેલાં જાહેરાત કરી હતી કે 31મી ઑક્ટોબરે વડા પ્રધાન નરેન્દ્ર મોદી આ પ્રતિમાનું અનાવરણ કરશે.
સરદાર પટેલની 138મી જયંતીના દિવસે ગુજરાતના તત્કાલીન મુખ્ય પ્રધાન નરેન્દ્ર મોદી તથા ભાજપના નેતા લાલકૃષ્ણ અડવાણી દ્વારા આ પ્રોજેક્ટનું ખાતમુહૂર્ત કરવામાં આવ્યું હતું.
કેટલાકનું માનવું છે કે સરદાર પટેલની પ્રતિમાનો ઉપયોગ 'રાજકીય હેતુ' માટે થઈ રહ્યો છે.
પરંતુ આ પ્રતિમા બનાવવા પાછળ કોનું ભેજું છે અને કોણ આ પ્રતિમા તૈયાર કરી રહ્યું છે?

સરદારની પ્રતિમાના સર્જક
સરદાર પટેલની આ પ્રતિમા બનાવવા પાછળ જે બે વ્યક્તિઓ છે.
વિશ્વની સૌથી ઊંચી પ્રતિમા રામ સુતાર અને તેમના પુત્ર અનિલ સુતારનું 'બ્રેઇન ચાઇલ્ડ' છે.
93 વર્ષીય રામ સુતારે ગુજરાત સહિત દેશભરમાં અનેક વિખ્યાત પ્રતિમાઓ બનાવી છે.
બીબીસી ગુજરાતી સાથે વાત કરતા અનિલ સુતારે કહ્યું છે કે 522 ફૂટ ઊંચી બ્રૉન્ઝની પ્રતિમા 'ભવ્યાતિ ભવ્ય' હશે.
60 વર્ષીય અનિલના કહેવા પ્રમાણે, "સાધુ બેટ ખાતે આકાર લઈ રહેલા 'સ્ટેચ્યૂ ઑફ યુનિટી'ના સરદાર પટેલ કેવા દેખાશે, તે માટે 30 ફૂટની પ્રતિમા તૈયાર કરવામાં આવી હતી."
"જે મૂળ પ્રતિમાની 'સ્કેલ્ડ ડાઉન રૅપ્લિકા' છે."
એ પ્રતિમા ગાંધીનગરના સુવર્ણ જયંતી ગાર્ડન ખાતે મૂકવામાં આવી છે. સરદારની પ્રતિમાનું મુખ વિધાનસભા તરફ રાખવામાં આવ્યું છે.
અનિલ કહે છે કે સ્ટેચ્યૂને ડિઝાઇન કરતી વખતે એ બાબતનું ખાસ ધ્યાન રાખવાનું હતું કે 182 મીટરની પ્રતિમા 'દૂરથી કેવી દેખાશે?'
સરદાર પટેલની 140મી જન્મ જયંતિના દિવસે ગુજરાતના તત્કાલીન મુખ્ય પ્રધાન આનંદીબહેન પટેલે તેનું અનાવરણ કર્યું હતું. આ પ્રતિમાના નિર્માણ પાછળ રૂ. 80 કરોડનો ખર્ચ થયો હતો.
અનિલ કહે છે મારા પિતા રામ સુતારે ગાંધી, સરદાર તથા નહેરુની આઝાદીની ચળવળ જોઈ હતી.
તેઓ સરદારના વ્યક્તિત્વથી ભારે આકર્ષિત હતા, એટલે આ પ્રોજેક્ટ તેમના માટે 'ખાસ' છે.
ગાંધીનગર ખાતે ગુજરાત વિધાનસભાના પરિસરમાં ધ્યાનસ્થ મુદ્રામાં ગાંધીજીની જે પ્રતિમા મૂકવામા આવી છે, તે દેશની સંસદમાં રહેલી રાષ્ટ્રપિતા મહાત્મા ગાંધીની પ્રતિમાની રૅપ્લિકા છે. બંને પ્રતિમાઓના શિલ્પી રામ સુતાર છે.
અમદાવાદના સરદાર વલ્લભભાઈ પટેલ આંતરરાષ્ટ્રીય વિમાન મથક ખાતે સરદાર પટેલની જે પ્રતિમા મૂકવામાં આવી છે, તેનું સર્જન પણ રામ સુતાર દ્વારા કરવામાં આવ્યું હતું.
60 વર્ષની કૅરિયર દરમિયાન રામ સુતાર દેશ-વિદેશમાં 200થી વધુ શિલ્પોનું સર્જન કરી ચૂક્યા છે.
તેમને 'પદ્મ શ્રી' તથા 'પદ્મ ભૂષણ'થી પણ નવાજવામાં આવ્યા છે.
ચીનમાં નિર્માણ
સ્ટેચ્યૂ નિર્માણ માટે Make In India પર ભાર મૂકવામાં આવ્યો હતો, જોકે એ શક્ય ન બનતા ચીનમાં નિર્માણકાર્ય હાથ ધરવામાં આવ્યું હતું.
અનિલ સુતારના કહેવા પ્રમાણે, 'જો સરદાર પટેલની પ્રતિમા ભારતમાં બની શકી હોત તો સારું રહેત.'
આ અંગે વિવાદ થતાં ગુજરાત સરકારે કહ્યું, 'અમે એલ ઍન્ડ ટીને કોન્ટ્રાક્ટ આપ્યો છે. કોને પેટા-કોન્ટ્રાક્ટ આપવો એ કંપનીની બાબત છે.'
ચીનમાં અલગ-અલગ 25,000 ભાગોમાં પ્રતિમાનું નિર્માણ કરવામાં આવ્યું હતું. આ ભાગોને સાઇટ પર વેલ્ડ કરીને જોડવામાં આવ્યા છે..
અનિલના કહેવા પ્રમાણે, "પ્રતિમાનો થ્રીડી ડેટા ચીનની કંપનીને આપવામાં આવ્યો હતો."
"જેના આધાર પર મૂળ કદની પ્રતિમાના ભાગો બનાવવાનું કામ શરૂ થયું હતું. "
"એપ્રિલ મહિનામાં તેમણે ચીનની મુલાકાત લીધી, ત્યારે પ્રતિમાના ચહેરાના ભાગને થર્મોકોલ પર નિરૂપવામાં આવ્યો હતો હતો, જેમાં અમે કેટલાક ફેરફાર સૂચવ્યા હતા."
આ પ્રોજેક્ટ પાછળ રૂ. 2,989 કરોડનો ખર્ચ થવાનો અંદાજ છે.
રામ સુતાર માને છે કે જો શાહ જહાંએ ખર્ચની ચિંતા કરી હોત તો તાજમહેલનું નિર્માણ ન થઈ શક્યું હોત.
જીવનના નવમા દાયકામાં પણ રામ સુતાર ખુદ પ્રોજેક્ટ પર નજર રાખી રહ્યા છે.
આ માટે સામાન્ય જનતા પાસેથી ફાળો ઉઘરાવવામાં આવ્યો છે તથા મોટી કંપનીઓએ 'કૉર્પૉરેટ સોશિયલ રિસ્પોન્સિબિલિટી'માંથી ફાળો આપ્યો છે.
કેટલો સમય રહેશે રેકોર્ડ?
સરદાર પટેલની પ્રતિમા વિશ્વની સૌથી ઊંચી પ્રતિમા હશે, જોકે તેનો રેકોર્ડ બહુ થોડા વર્ષો માટે બનશે.
મહારાષ્ટ્ર સરકાર દ્વારા મુંબઈ નજીક અરબી સમુદ્રમાં એક ટાપુ પર મરાઠા યૌદ્ધા શિવાજીની પ્રતિમાનું નિર્માણકાર્ય હાથ ધરવામાં આવ્યું છે.
આ 'શિવ સ્મારક'નું કામ પણ રામ સુતાર તથા અનિલ સુતારને સોંપવામાં આવ્યું છે.
અનિલના કહેવા પ્રમાણે, "શિવાજીની પ્રતિમાનું કદ સરદાર પટેલની પ્રતિમાથી નાનું હશે, પરંતુ 'જમીનથી ઊંચાઈ'ની બાબતમાં શિવ સ્મારક સૌથી ઊંચી પ્રતિમા હશે."
2016માં વડા પ્રધાન મોદીએ તેનું ખાતમુહૂર્ત કર્યું હતું અને 2021 સુધીમાં તેનું નિર્માણકાર્ય પૂર્ણ થવાનો અંદાજ છે.
હાલમાં ચીનની 153 મીટર ઊંચી સ્પ્રિંગ ટૅમ્પલ બુદ્ધની પ્રતિમા સૌથી ઊંચી પ્રતિમા છે.
અન્ય મહાકાય પ્રતિમાઓમાં ઉશિકુ ડાયબુત્સુ (120 મીટર, જાપાન), સ્ટેચ્યૂ ઑફ લિબર્ટી (93 મીટર, અમેરિકા), ધ મધરલૅન્ડ કોલ્સ (85 મીટર, રશિયા) તથા ઈસુ ખ્રિસ્તની પ્રતિમા (39.6 મીટર, બ્રાઝિલ)નો સમાવેશ થાય છે.
પ્રોજેક્ટ સમર્થકોનું કહેવું છે કે આ પ્રોજેક્ટને કારણે આજુબાજુના વિસ્તારોમાં મોટાપાયે રોજગારીનું સર્જન થશે અને સ્થાનિકોનું જીવનધોરણ ઊંચું આવશે.
હાલમાં ચોમાસાની સિઝનમાં અહીં પર્યટન ઉદ્યોગ પૂરબહાર ખીલી ઉઠે છે.
જો સરદાર હોત તો?
દેશના 'લોખંડી પુરુષ' પર 'સરદાર: સાચો માણસ સાચી વાત' નામનું પુસ્તક લખનારા ઉર્વિશ કોઠારી કહે છે કે સરદાર કોઈપણ નિર્ણય લેતા પહેલાં તેને 'દેશહિત'ની એરણ પર ચકાસતા હતા.
કોઠારી કહે છે, "અંગતજીવનમાં સરદાર પટેલ ખૂબ જ સાદગીપૂર્ણ જીવન જીવતા હતા. તેમને ભપકાબાજી કે વ્યક્તિગત પ્રસિદ્ધિનો મોહ ન હતો."
એક પ્રસંગને ટાંકતા કોઠારી કહે છે કે ગાંધીની હત્યા બાદ બિરલા હાઉસને કબજે લઈને ત્યાં સ્મારક બનાવવાનો પ્રસ્તાવ આવ્યો હતો.
એ પ્રસ્તાવનો વિરોધ કરતા સરદારે કહ્યું હતું, 'જો ગાંધી હોત તો તેમણે પણ ન ઇચ્છ્યું હોત કે તેમના નામે કોઈનો બંગલો લઈ લેવામાં આવે.'
1928માં બારડોલી સત્યાગ્રહની સફળતા બાદ ગાંધીજીએ તેમને 'સરદાર'નું ઉપનામ આપ્યું હતું.
સરદાર વિ. નહેરુનો પ્રયાસ?
ફેબ્રુઆરી-2018માં વડા પ્રધાન મોદીએ સંસદમાં કહ્યું હતું, 'જો સરદાર પટેલ દેશના પ્રથમ વડા પ્રધાન હોત તો સમગ્ર કાશ્મીર આપણું હોત.'
મોદી પર 'નહેરુ વિરુદ્ધ સરદાર'નું ચિત્રણ કરવાના તથા સરદાર પેટલના રાજકીય વારસાને 'હાઇજેક' કરવાના આરોપ લાગતા રહે છે.
ઇતિહાસકાર ડી.એન. જ્હાએ બીબીસી સાથે વાતચીતમાં કહ્યું હતું, "સરદાર પટેલ મોદીને માફક આવે છે, કારણ કે તેઓ ગુજરાતના હતા."
"મોદી ખુદને પટેલની જેમ સશક્ત રાજનેતા તરીકે પ્રોજેક્ટ કરવા માગે છે."
ઇતિહાસકાર રામચંદ્ર ગુહાના કહેવા પ્રમાણે, "નહેરુ અને સરદાર નખશીખ પ્રમાણિક અને દેશભક્ત હતા. બંને એકબીજાના હરીફ નહીં પરંતુ સાથી હતા."
કોઠારી પણ માને છે કે 'સ્ટેચ્યૂ ઑફ યુનિટી' પ્રોજેક્ટ પાછળ રાજકીય નિહિતાર્થ રહેલા છે."
વલ્લભભાઈ દેશના પ્રથમ વડા પ્રધાન જવાહરલાલ નહેરુની કેબિનેટમાં ગૃહપ્રધાન તથા ડેપ્યુટી પ્રાઇમ મિનિસ્ટર હતા.
'સ્ટેચ્યૂ ઑફ યુનિટી પ્રોજેક્ટ'
