સ્ત્રીઓના તહેવારોમાં કેવડાત્રીજનુ વ્રત મુખ્ય છે. આ વ્રત ભાદરવા માસના શુક્લ પક્ષના ત્રીજના દિવસે કરવામાં આવે છે. તે દિવસે ત્રીજ હસ્તિ નક્ષત્ર યુક્ત હોય છે અને તે દિવસે વ્રત કરવાથી બધા ફળોની પ્રાપ્તિ થાય છે. આ વ્રત સ્ત્રીઓને સૌભાગ્ય આપવા અને તેમના સૌભાગ્યની રક્ષા કરનારુ છે.

દેશમાં લગભગ બધી જ જગ્યાએ આ વ્રત કરવામાં આવે છે. આ દિવસે શંકર અને પાર્વતીની શાસ્ત્રમાં બતાવેલ વિધિ મુજબ વિશેષ રૂપે પાર્થિવ પૂજા કરવામાં આવે છે. સ્ત્રીઓ આ દિવસે નિર્જળ ઉપવાસ કરે છે અને સાંજે વિધિપૂર્વક શિવ-પાર્વતીની પૂજા આરતી અને કેવડાત્રીજના વ્રતની કથા સાંભળે છે. તે શિવને પ્રાર્થના કરે છે કે મારો પતિ દીર્ધાયુ બને. મારો સુહાગ અમર રહે. રાત્રે પણ તે પાણી પણ પીતી નથી. વહેલી સવારે સ્નાન-પૂજા કરી સૂર્યોદય પછી તે પારણા કરે છે અને ઉપવાસ તોડે છે. કુંવારી છોકરીઓ આ વ્રત દ્વારા એવુ માંગે છે કે તેમનો ભાવિ પતિ સુંદર અને સુયોગ્ય હોય.

ત્રીજના એક દિવસ પહેલા વિવાહિત સ્ત્રીઓ પોતાના હાથોમાં મહેંદી મુકે છે. આ પ્રસંગે ગવાતા ગીતો મધુર, ગુણયુક્ત અને મુખ્ય રીતે પતિ, સાસરિયું અને પિયરથી સંબંધિત હોય છે. આ ગીત વર્ષા સંબંધી પણ હોય છે.

આ વ્રતનુ વર્ણન શિવ-પાર્વતીના સંવાદના રૂપમાં ભવિષ્ય-પુરાણના ઉત્તરભાગમાં મળે છે.

કેવડાત્રીજ વ્રતની વિધિ-

ભાદરવા માસની અજવાળી ત્રીજે સૂર્યોદય પહેલા સ્નાનાદિ વગેરેથી પરવારીને ભગવાન શીવની કેવડાથી પુજા કરવી. ઘરને સુંદર રીતે શણગારવું. આખો દિવસ નકોરડો ઉપવાસ કરવો. વારંવાર કેવડો સુંઘી શીવનું સ્મરણ કરવું. શીવ પાર્વતીની પુજા કરવી અને વાર્તા સાંભળવી.

કેવડાત્રીજ વ્રત કથા  

એક વખતે ભગવાન શીવ અને પાર્વતી વાતો કરી રહ્યાં હતાં. ત્યારે વાત વાતમાં પાર્વતીએ પુછ્યું કે હે ભોળાનાથ દક્ષ પ્રજાપતિના યજ્ઞમાં મારા દેહની આહુતિ આપ્યાં પછી જ્યારે મે ફરીથી અવતાર ધારણ કર્યો ત્યારે તમને પામવા માટે મે કયું વ્રત કર્યું હતું તેની તમને જાણ છે?

ત્યારે ભોલાનાથે કહ્યું- હે દેવી! તો સાંભળો... બીજો અવતાર ધારણ કર્યો પછી તમે નાનપણથી જ મારૂ રટણ કરતાં હતાં. એક વખતે નારદમુનિએ તમારા પિતા હિમાલયની આગળ મારી ખુબ જ પ્રશંસા કરી ત્યારે તમે મનોમન ખુબ જ ખુશ થયાં હતાં. પરંતુ નારદજીએ તમારા લગ્ન વિષ્ણું ભગવાન સાથે કરવા કહ્યું હતું ત્યારે તમે નારદ પર ખુબ જ ગુસ્સે થયાં હતાં.

તમારા પિતા જ્યારે તમારા વિવાહ વિષ્ણુ સાથે કરવાનો વિચાર કરી રહ્યાં હતાં ત્યારે તમે મનોમન ખુબ જ મુંઝાયા અને તે મુંઝવણ દૂર કરવા માટે તમે તમારી સખી સાથે વનમાં ચાલ્યાં ગયાં હતાં. વનમાં તમે એક માટીનો ઢગલો જોયો અને બાળકની જેમ તમે તે માટીના ઢગલા સાથે રમવા લાગ્યાં હતાં. તમારૂ રોમે રોમ મારૂ રટણ કરતું હોવાથી તમે બેધ્યાનપણે મારૂ શીવલીંગ બનાવી દીધું હતું અને ત્યાર બાદ તમે વનમાંથી કેવડો અને બીજા વનફૂલો તેમજ અન્ય વનસ્પતિ લાવીને મને ખુબ જ ભાવ પૂર્વક ચડાવ્યાં હતાં. તે દિવસે ભાદરવા માસની અજવાળી ત્રીજ હતી. વળી તે દિવસે તમે આખો દિવસ કાંઇ પણ ખાધા પીધા વિના નકોરડો ઉપવાસ કર્યો હતો. પાણી પણ પીધું નહોતુ. આમ તો મને કેવડો નથી ચડતો પરંતુ તમે ખુબ જ ભાવમાં આવીને મને તે દિવસે કેવડો ચડાવ્યો હતો. તેથી હુ તમારા પર પ્રસન્ન થયો હતો અને તમને વરદાન માંગવા કહ્યું હતું. ત્યારે તમે કહ્યું હતું કે-

હે ભોળાનાથ! જો મે ખરા ભાવથી તમારી ભક્તિ કરી હોય અને રોમે રોમથી તમારૂ જ રટણ કરતી હોય તો તમે જ મારા પતિ બનો. અને મે તમને તથાસ્તું કહી દિધું હતું.

તમે આખી રાત જાગવાને કારણે અને ભુખને કારણે ખુબ જ થાક્યા હોવાથી સુઈ ગયાં હતાં. જ્યારે તમારા પિતા તમને શોધતાં શોધાતાં તમારી પાસે આવ્યાં ત્યારે તમને જંગલમાં સુતા જોઈને તેઓ ખુશ થયાં હતાં. અને તમને પોતાની સાથે આવવા માટે કહ્યું ત્યારે તમે વિના સંકોચે તેઓને કહી દિધું હતું કે તમે શુધ્ધ મનથી મને વરી ચુક્યાં છો.

હે દેવી તમે અજાણતાથી કેવડા વડે મારી પુજા કરી હતી અને આખો દિવસ ઉપવાસ કર્યો હતો તે વ્રતના પ્રભાવથી તમારા પિતા માની ગયાં હતાં અને તમારા લગ્ન મારી સાથે કરાવી આપ્યાં હતાં. હે દેવી આમ તો મારી પુજા બિલિપત્રથી જ થાય છે પરંતુ જે દિવસથી તમે કેવડો ચડાવ્યો ત્યારથી કેવડો પણ મને પ્રિય છે અને ભાદરવા માસની અજવાળી ત્રીજે જે કોઇ ભુખ્યાં પેટે અને પ્રસન્ન ચિત્તથી કેવડા વડે મારી પુજા કરશે તેના બધા જ મનોરથ પુર્ણ થશે.
