पुराणों के अनुसार हिमालय के उत्तर में क्षीरसागर है, जहां देवासुरों ने मिलकर समुद्र मंथन किया था। मंथन दंड था- मंदर पर्वत, रज्जु था- वासुकि तथा स्वयं विष्णु ने कूर्म रूप में मंदर को पीठ पर धारण किया था। समुद्र मंथन के समय क्रमश: पुष्पक रथ, ऐरावत हाथ, परिजात पुष्प, कौस्तुभ, सुरभि, अंत में अमृत कुंभ को लेकर स्वयं धन्वंतरि प्रकट हुए थे। उक्त कुंभ को उन्होंने इंद्र को दिया था।
इंद्र ने उसे अपने पुत्र जयंत को सौंपा। देवताओं की सलाह पर जयंत उस कुंभ को लेकर स्वर्ग की ओर दौड़ा। यह देखकर दैत्याचार्य ने क्रोधित होकर दैत्यों को आदेश दिया कि बलपूर्वक उस कुंभ को उससे छीने। देवासुर संग्राम होने लगा। 12 दिन तक युद्ध करने के बाद देवताओं का दल हार गया। इसी बीच पृथ्वी के कई स्थानों पर कुंभ को छिपाया गया था। जिन 4 स्थानों पर कुंभ रखा गया था, उन्हीं स्थानों पर तब से 'कुंभ योग पर्व' मनाया जा रहा है। देवताओं के 12 दिवस नरलोक में 12 वर्ष होते हैं। वहीं वजह है कि प्रति 12 वर्ष के पश्चात कुंभ में स्नान करने के लिए यह महोत्सव होता है।
देवानां द्वादशाहोभिर्मर्त्यै द्वार्दशवत्सरै:।
जायन्ते कुम्भपर्वाणि तथा द्वादश संख्यया:।।
सूर्य, चंद्र और बृहस्पति देवासुर संग्राम के समय अमृत कुंभ की रक्षा करते रहे। इन तीनों का संयोग जब विशिष्ट राशि पर होता है, तब कुंभ योग आता है।
गंगाद्वारे प्रयागे च धारा गोदावरी तटे।
कलसाख्योहि योगोहयं प्रोच्यते शंकरादिभि:।।
(1) गंगाद्वार (हरिद्वार), (2) प्रयाग, (3) धारा (उज्जयिनी), (4) गोदावरी (नासिक)- इन सभी स्थानों पर प्रति तीन वर्ष बाद कुंभयोग होता है। लगभग 12 वर्ष बाद 1-1 स्थान पर कुंभ महामेला का आयोजन होता है।
कुंभयोग का काल निर्णय
हरिद्वार में कुंभकाल :
पद्मिनीनायके मेषे कुंभराशि गते गुरौ।
गंगाद्वारे भवेत् योग: कुंभनामा तदोत्तम:।।
बृहस्पति कुंभ राशि एवं सूर्य राशि जब होते हैं, तब हरिद्वार में अमृत-कुंभयोग होता है।
वसंते विषुवे चैव घटे देवपुरोहिते।
गंगाद्वारे च कुन्ताख्य: सुधामिति नरो यत:।।
बसंत ऋतु में सूर्य जब मेष राशि में संक्रमण करता है एवं देव पुरोहित वृहस्पति कुंभ राशि में आते हैं, तब हरिद्वार में कुंभ मेला होता है। इस योग से मानव सुधा यानी अमृत प्राप्त करता है।
कुंभराशिगते जीवे यद्दिने मेषगेरवो।
हरिद्वारे कृतं स्नानं पुनरावृत्ति वर्ज्जनम्।।
जिन दिनों में बृहस्पति कुंभ राशि में एवं सूर्य मकर राशि में रहेंगे, उन्हीं दिनों हरिद्वार में कुंभ स्नान करने पर पुनर्जन्म नहीं होता।
प्रयाग में कुंभकाल
मेषराशिगते जीवे मकरे चन्द्रभास्करौ।
अमावस्या तदा योग: कुंभख्यस्तीर्थ नायके।।
बृहस्पति मेष राशि में तथा चंद्र-सूर्य मकर राशि में जब आते हैं और अमावस्या तिथि हो तो तीर्थराज प्रयाग में कुंभयोग होता है।
नासिक में कुंभकाल :
सिंहराशिगते सूर्ये सिहंराश्यां बृहस्पतौ।
गोदावर्यां भवेत कुम्भो जायते खुल मुक्तिद:।।
बृहस्पति और सूर्य दोनों जब कुंभ राशि पर आते हैं, तब गोदावरी में मुक्तिप्रद कुंभयोग होता है।
कर्के गुरुस्तशा भानुश्चन्द्रश्चचन्द्रक्षयस्तथा।
गोदावर्यास्तदा कुम्भो जायतेवहनीमण्डले।।
कर्क राशि में वृहस्पति, सूर्य और चंद्र जब आते हैं, तब अमावस्या तिथि को गोदावरी तट पर (नासिक) कुंभयोग होता है।
उज्जयिनी में कुंभकाल
मेषराशिगते सूर्ये सिहंराश्यां वृहस्पतौ।
उज्जयिन्यां भवेत कुम्भ: सर्वसौख्य विवर्द्धन:।।
सूर्य मेष राशि में एवं बृहस्पति सिंह राशि में जब आते हैं, तब उज्जयिनी (धारा) में सभी के लिए सुखदायक कुंभयोग आता है। चूंकि बृहस्पति सिंह राशि पर रहते हैं इसलिए सिंहस्थ कुंभयोग के नाम से यह प्रसिद्ध है।
घटे सूरि: शशिसूर्य: कुह्याम् दामोदरे यदा।
धारायाश्च तथा कुम्भो जायते खुल मुक्तिद:।।
तुला राशि में बृहस्पति, चंद्र और सूर्य के एकत्रित होने पर अमावस्या तिथि के दिन धारा (उज्जयिनी) में शिप्रा तट पर मुक्तिप्रद कुंभयोग होता है।
ज्योतिष शास्त्र के अनुसार ग्रहों का शुभाशुभ फल मनुष्य के जीवन पर पड़ता है। बृहस्पति जब विभिन्न ग्रहों के अशुभ फलों को नष्ट कर पृथ्वी पर शुभ प्रभाव का विस्तार करने में समर्थ हो जाते हैं, तब उक्त शुभ स्थानों पर अमृतप्रद कुंभयोग अनुष्ठित होता है।

अनादिकाल से इस कुंभयोग को आर्यों ने सर्वश्रेष्ठ साक्षात मुक्तिपद की संज्ञा दी है। इन कुंभयोगों में उक्त पुण्य तीर्थस्थानों में जाकर दर्शन तथा स्नान करने पर मानव कायमनोभाव से पवित्र, निष्पाप और मुक्तिभागी होता है- इस बात का उल्लेख पुराणों में है। यही वजह है कि धर्मप्राण मुक्तिकामी नर-नारी कुंभयोग और कुंभ मेले के प्रति इतने उत्साहित रहते हैं।
