पौराणिक मान्यता के अनुसार चारों युग के धार्मिक कृत्य प्रमुख रूप से अलग-अलग कहे गए हैं। सतयुग में तप, त्रेता में ज्ञान, द्वापर में यज्ञ और कलयुग में दान को प्रमुख बताया गया है। वैदिक ग्रंथों में दान की महिमा कही गई है। इस युग में गोदान, रथ, अश्व, ऊंट, और दासियों का दान किया जाता था।
ऋग्वेद में कहा गया है- जो गायों या दक्षिणा का दान करता है, वह स्वर्ग में उच्च स्थान प्राप्त करता है। सुपात्र को ही दान देना चाहिए। जगद्गुरु शंकराचार्य ने कहा है- दानं परं किं च सुपात्र दत्तम्- श्रेष्ठदान वहीं है जो सुपात्र को दिया जाए। पुराने मनीषियों ने कहा है कि धन की तीन गति होती है-दान, भोग और नाश। जो व्यक्ति न दान करता है, न भोग करता है उसका धन तीसरी गति को प्राप्त हो जाता है-नष्ट हो जाता है।
इतिहास और पुराण ग्रंथों में दान देने वाले देवताओं, दानवों, ऋषि-महर्षियों, और राजा की प्रशंसा में बहुत कुछ कहा गया है। धर्मराज युधिष्ठिर, महर्षि दधीचि, महारथी कर्ण और महाराज शिवि के दान की प्रशंसा में पुराणों में बहुत कुछ कहा गया।

दान का अर्थ
दान का अर्थ है- अपनी किसी वस्तु का स्वामी किसी दूसरे को बना देना। दान लेने की स्वीकृति मन से, वचन से या शरीर से दी जा सकती है। दान को स्वीकार करना प्रतिग्रहण है। यह सिर्फ किसी चीज को लेना नहीं है। जिस चीज को लेने से अदृष्ट आध्यात्मिक पुण्य प्राप्त हो और जिसे देते समय पवित्र मंत्र पढ़े जाएं, वही दान है। भिखारी को भीख दी जाती है- वह शास्त्र के अनुसार दान नहीं है।

प्रेम से अपने मित्र या नौकर को जो कुछ दिया जाता है, उसकी गिनती दान में नहीं होती। विद्या शब्द भी अलंकारिक है। शिष्य विद्या के बदले में गुरु को दक्षिणा देता है। गुरु की महिमा बहुत है, लेकिन वह शिष्य को जो कुछ देता है, वह शास्त्र के अनुसार दान की परिभाषा में शामिल नहीं किया जा सकता।
दान के अंग
दान के छह अंग हैं- दाता, प्रतिग्रहीता (दान देने वाला), श्रद्धा, धर्मयुक्त देय (उचित ढंग से हासिल किया गया धन), उचित काल (सही पर्व योग या संस्कार के समय किया गया दान) और उचित देश-(तीर्थ स्थान वगैरह)।
इष्ट पूर्ति यानी यज्ञ और दान से मिलने वाला पुण्य। इस पुण्य के लिए ही दान किया जाता है और यह जन्म-जन्मांतर तक दान देने वाले को खुशहाल करता है, उसके कष्टों को दूर करता है।

दानकर्ता
दान धर्म का विशेष अंग है। शास्त्र में कहा गया है- दो प्रकार के लोगों के गले में पत्थर बांधकर उन्हें जल में डुबा देना चाहिए। एक तो वह धनवान, जो धन होने पर भी दान नहीं करता। दूसरा वह दरिद्र, जो तप नहीं करता। दान सभी लोग कर सकते है। स्त्री, पुरुष, बाल, वृद्ध सबको दान का अधिकार है।

दान देने वाले को धार्मिक, श्रद्धालु, गुणी, पवित्र होना चाहिए। जो लोग निन्दित व्यवसाय से धन नहीं कमाते उन्हें दान करने का अधिकार है। दान के लिए अपनी ईमानदारी की कमाई का ही इस्तेमाल करना चाहिए। महर्षि व्यास ने लिखा है-सौ में एक शूर, सहस्त्रों में एक विद्वान और सौ हजारों में एक वक्ता मिलता है। दाता तो मुश्किल से ही मिलता है।

दान लेने के पात्र
शास्त्रों में लिखा है कि चरित्रवान, उपकारी, दीन, अनाथ और गुणी लोगों को दान करना चाहिए। धूर्त, चाटूकार, जुआरी, ठग, चारण और चोर को दिया गया दान व्यर्थ हो जाता है। कपटी और वेद को न जानने वाले ब्राह्मण को भी दान नहीं देना चाहिए।

दान के पदार्थ
इसके बारे में अनेक नियम बनाए गए हैं। महाभारत के अनुसार दानी वहीं है जो अपने सबसे अधिक मूल्यवान पदार्थ को देता है। यह पदार्थ सुपात्र को दिया जाना चाहिए। दान उसी चीज का हासिल किया जा सकता है, जो बिना किसी को सताए हासिल किया गया हो। दान छोटा है या बड़ा-इस पर उसका पुण्य नहीं आंका जाता। श्रद्धा और स्नेह भावना से सुपात्र को जो कुछ दिया जाता है, वहीं अच्छा दान है।
दान की वस्तुएं
दान की वस्तुओं को तीन वर्गों में बांटा गया है-उत्तम, मध्यम और निकृष्ट । उत्तम पदार्थों में भोजन, दही, शहद, गाय, भूमि, सोना, घोड़ा और हाथी को गिना जाता है। मध्यम पदार्थों में आश्रय (घर), घरेलू उपकरण और औषधि वगैरह शामिल हैं। निकृष्ट वस्तुओं में जूता, हिंडोली, गाड़ी, इत्र, बर्तन, आसन, दीपक, लकड़ी और फल वगैरह आते हैं।

तीन प्रकार के दान सबसे अच्छे कहे गए हैं- गाय, भूमि और सरस्वती। इन्हें अतिदान कहा गया है। दान की शास्त्रीय परिभाषा में विद्या दान को महत्व नहीं दिया गया है, लेकिन याज्ञवल्क्य ऋषि ने कहा है कि विद्या सर्वश्रेष्ठ दान है यह जल, भोजन, गाय, भूमि, वस्त्र, तिल, सोना और घी के दान से भी श्रेष्ठ है।
विष्णु धर्मोत्तर पुराण में भूमिदान सबसे अच्छा माना गया है। विष्णु धर्मसूत्र के अनुसार अभयदान सबसे श्रेष्ठ है।
