उज्जयिनी, प्राचीनकाल में यह नगर ग्वालियर राज्य के अधिकार में ही नहीं, बल्कि मालव-प्रदेश की राजधानी था। इन दिनों मध्यप्रदेश के अंतर्गत है। इस नगर के भिन्न-भिन्न नाम हैं- विशाला, अवन्ती, अवन्तिका आदि। अयोध्या, मथुरा, माया (हरिद्वार), काशी, कांची, द्वारावती की तरह अवन्ती, अवंतिका या उज्जयिनी तीर्थ भी हिन्दुओं के निकट पवित्र तीर्थ हैं-
अयोध्या मथुरा माया काशी कांची अवन्तिका।
पुरी द्वारावती श्चैव सप्तैतां मोक्षदायिका।।
यह नगरी धार्मिक दृष्टि से प्रतिद्ध और अत्यंत प्राचीन है। महाभारत में इस नगर का उल्लेख है। यह नगरी महाराजा विक्रमादित्य की राजधानी थी। प्रसिद्ध संस्कृत कवि कालिदास उनकी सभा के नवरत्नों में सप्तम थे। कुमार सम्भव, ऋतुसंहार, रघुवंश, मेघदूत, नलोदय आदि काव्य, अभिज्ञान शाकुन्तलम्, विक्रमोर्वशीयम्, मालविकाग्निमित्रम् आदि नाटक, द्वात्रिंशत्पुत्तलिका आदि उपाख्यान कविवर कालिदास की काव्य प्रतिभा और साहित्यिक कृतियों के अमर दृष्टांत हैं।

उज्जैन केवल आध्यात्मिक तीर्थ ही नहीं, बल्कि काव्य तथा साहित्य के क्षेत्र में उज्ज्वल पीठ स्थान है। यह नगर कई बार हिन्दू राजाओं, मुसलमानों के अधिकार में आया था। उज्जयिनी में अनेक हिन्दू मंदिर हैं। कालीदह महल से कुछ दूर स्थित प्राचीन तोरण द्वार के बारे में कहा जाता है कि यहीं सम्राट विक्रमादित्य का महल था, जो खंडहर के रूप में मौजूद है। शहर के दक्षिण दिशा में एक मान-मंदिर है जिसका निर्माण जयपुर नरेश जयसिंह ने करवाया था। यह नगर शिप्रा नदी के किनारे बसा हुआ है। शिप्रा नदी विंध्य पर्वत से निकलकर चम्बल नदी से जा मिली है और चम्बल आगे जाकर यमुना से मिल गई है। वर्तमान समय में शिप्रा क्षीण स्रोत है। लेकिन इसकी महिमा में कोई कमी नहीं हुई है। इस क्षेत्र में इसे गंगा के बराबर समझा जाता है।
महाकाल: सरिच्छिप्रागतिश्वैचव सुनिर्म्मला।
उज्जयिन्या विशालाक्षि वास: कस्य न रोच्यते।
स्नानं कृत्वा नरो यस्तु महानद्यां हि दुर्ल्लभम्,
महाकालं नमस्कृत्य नरो मृत्युं न शोचयेत्।
अर्थात जहां भगवान महाकाल हैं, जहां शिप्रा नदी है और इसी वजह से जहां निर्मल गति प्राप्त होती है, उस उज्जयिनी नगरी में किसका मन रहने को नहीं करेगा? महानदी शिप्रा में स्नान करने के पश्चात शिव का दर्शन तथा पूजन करने पर मृत्यु-भय नहीं रहता। यहां मृत कीट-पतंग तक रुद्र के अनुचर बन जाने का सौभाग्य प्राप्त करते हैं।
शिप्रा नदी में स्नान करने लायक 5 घाट हैं। शहर में स्थित रामघाट सबसे विशाल घाट है। शेष घाटों के नाम हैं- नरसिंह घाट, गऊ घाट, त्रिवेणी घाट और मंगल घाट। कुंभ के अवसर पर जिस दिन मुख्य स्नान होता है, सभी संप्रदाय के साधु रामघाट में जुलूस के साथ आते हैं और यहीं स्नान करते हैं। मुख्य स्नान के दिन हैं- चैत्र संक्रांति, अमावस्या, अक्षय तृतीया, शंकर जयंती और वैशाखी पूर्णिमा।
वैशाखी पूर्णिमा को सर्वश्रेष्ठ स्नान माना गया है। इस स्नान को शाही स्नान कहा जाता है। कुंभ मेला के अवसर पर नदी के दोनों किनारे भारत के सभी मठ और अखाड़े के साधुओं के डेरा-तंबू या कुटिया लग जाते हैं। जैन, बौद्ध, सिख संप्रदाय के संत भी इस महोत्सव में भाग लेने आते हैं। उज्जयिनी शहर से 4 मील दूर गंगा घाट त तथा मंगल घाट के निकट वैष्णव साधुओं का शिविर लगता है। मुख्य सड़क के दोनों ओर दत्तात्रेय अखाड़ा के मंडलेश्वर और महामंडलेश्वर विराजते हैं। नागा साधुओं का डेरा शिप्रा नदी के तट पर लगता है।
उज्जयिनी स्थित महाकाल शिव द्वादश ज्योतिर्लिंगों में अन्यतम हैं। यहां वे दक्षिणमूर्ति हैं। दक्षिणमूर्ति शिव का महत्व केवल यहीं दिखाई देता है। मंदिर शहर के भीतर है। उज्जयिनी की हरसिद्धि का मंदिर भी काफी प्राचीन है। इन्हें काफी जाग्रत माना जाता है। शक्ति के 51 पीठों में यह अन्यतम है। यहां देवी की कुहनी) गिरी थी। यह भी कहा जाता है कि राजा विक्रमादित्य नित्य यहां मंदिर में पूजा करते थे। यहां का सांदीपनि आश्रम दर्शनीय है। द्वापर युग में इसी आश्रम में श्रीकृष्ण और बलराम पढ़ने के लिए आए थे। भागवत पुराण में इसका उल्लेख है।
शिप्रा नदी के किनारे भैरवगढ़ के पूर्व प्राचीन सिद्धवट है। इस वृक्ष को अत्यंत पवित्र समझा जाता है। उज्जयिनी से दो मील की दूरी पर गढ़कालिका मंदिर है। प्राचीन अवंतिका नगरी काफी पहले उधर बसी हुई थी। कहा जाता है कि महाकवि कालिदास नित्य मंदिर में आकर पूजा करते थे। महाराज हर्षवर्धन ने इस मंदिर का जीर्णोद्धार कराया था। इनके अलावा उज्जयिनी के प्रमुख मंदिरों में गोपाल मंदिर, चित्रगुप्त मंदिर, नवग्रह मंदिर, महागणेश मंदिर, भर्तृहरि गुहा, कालभैरव मंदिर, ब्रह्मकुंड और मंगलनाथ मंदिर आदि दर्शनीय हैं। यहां पंचमुखी हनुमानजी की मूर्ति है।
कुंभयोग में लोग यहां आकर पंचक्रोशी परिक्रमा करते हैं। महाकालेश्वर मंदिर को केंद्र बनाकर इसके चारों ओर 123 किलोमीटर मार्ग को 5 कोस के व्यास में परिक्रमा करते हैं। इस परिक्रमा में 5 दिन लगते हैं। अनेक साधु-महात्मा भी परिक्रमा में भाग लेते हैं। यात्रा पथ में 84 महादेव, नौ नारायण और सप्त सागर आदि आते हैं।
