शिव का सावन चाहे पूरा हो गया हो लेकिन जन्माष्टमी आने को है, शिव के साथ कान्हा हमारे हृदय में विराजते हैं। उनके बारे में कुछ ऐसी बातें जानते हैं, जो हमें उनकी विशेषताओं से चमत्कृत करती हैं-
·श्रीकृष्ण की परदादी मारिषा और सौतेली मां रोहिणी (बलराम की मां) नाग जनजाति की थीं। श्रीकृष्ण के पालक पिता नंद आभीर जाति से थे जिन्हें आज अहीर कहा जाता है जबकि उनके वास्तविक पिता वसुदेव ययाति के पुत्र यदु के वंशज थे। इसी कारण श्रीकृष्ण को यादव कहा जाता है।
श्रीकृष्ण बलराम से केवल 1 वर्ष एवं 8 दिन छोटे थे, पर वे उनका आदर अपने पिता की तरह करते थे।
गोकुल में इंद्र के प्रकोप से लोगों को बचाने के लिए उन्होंने अपनी कनिष्ठा अंगुली पर गोवर्धन को पूरे 7 दिनों तक उठाए रखा। श्रीकृष्ण हर प्रहर अर्थात दिन में 8 बार भोजन करते थे। जब गोकुलवासियों ने देखा कि उनके कारण कृष्ण 7 दिनों से भूखे हैं तो गोवर्धन की पुन: स्थापना के बाद उन्होंने श्रीकृष्ण के 8 बार के हिसाब से 55 तरह के पकवान बनाकर खिलाए। तभी से श्रीकृष्ण को 55 भोग चढ़ाने की परंपरा शुरू हुई।
सामान्यतः मृदु रहने वाली श्रीकृष्ण की मांसपेशियां युद्ध के समय विस्तॄत हो जाती थीं। यही कारण था कि स्त्रियों के समान दिखने वाला उनका लावण्यमय शरीर युद्ध के समय अत्यंत कठोर दिखाई देने लगता था।
श्रीकृष्ण की त्वचा का रंग मेघश्यामल (काला) था और उनके शरीर से एक मादक गंध स्रावित होती थी अतः उन्हें अपने गुप्त अभियानों में इनको छुपाने का प्रयत्न करना पड़ता था, जैसे कि जरासंध अभियान के समय। ठीक ऐसी ही खूबियां द्रौपदी में भी थीं इसीलिए अज्ञातवास में उन्होंने सैरन्ध्री का कार्य चुना ताकि चंदन, उबटन आदि में उनकी गंध छुपी रहे। पांडवों की दादी सत्यवती के शरीर से भी ऐसी ही मादक गंध आती थी, जो उन्हें महर्षि पराशर के आशीर्वाद से प्राप्त हुई थी।
श्रीकृष्ण अंतिम वर्षों को छोड़कर कभी भी द्वारिका में 5 महीने से ज्यादा नहीं रहे। 15 वर्ष की आयु में गोकुल को छोड़ने के बाद श्रीकृष्ण कभी भी वापस नहीं गए। वे दुबारा अपने पालक नंद, यशोदा और अपनी बहन एकनंगा से नहीं मिले। हालांकि उन्होंने एक बार उद्धव को वहां भेजा था जिसे लोगो ने श्रीकृष्ण ही समझ लिया, क्योंकि उद्धव की काया भी श्रीकृष्ण से बहुत मिलती थी।
श्रीकृष्ण के बड़े भाई बलराम अपने जीवन में केवल एक बार गोकुल गए थे। अनुश्रुतियों के अनुसार श्रीकृष्ण ने आधुनिक 'मार्शल-आर्ट' का विकास ब्रज क्षेत्र के वनों में किया था और 'रासलीला' और 'डांडिया' उसी का नॄत्य रूप है। 'कलारीपट्टु' का प्रथम आचार्य श्रीकृष्ण को ही माना जाता है और इसी कारण द्वारका की 'नारायणी सेना' आर्यावर्त की सबसे भयंकर प्रहारक सेना बन गई थी।
केवल श्रीकृष्ण को ही भगवान विष्णु का परमावतार और उनके सर्वाधिक समकक्ष माना जाता है, क्योंकि वे नारायण की 15 कलाओं से युक्त थे। उन्होंने अपने गुरु सांदीपनि के आश्रम में केवल 54 दिनों में 54 विद्याओं का ज्ञान अर्जित कर लिया था।

·कृष्ण के रथ का नाम 'जैत्र' था और उनके सारथी का नाम दारुक (बाहुक) था। उनके रथ में 4 अश्व जुते रहते थे जिनके नाम शैव्य, सुग्रीव, मेघपुष्प और बलाहक थे। कॄष्ण के धनुष का नाम श्राङ्ग, खड्ग का नाम नंदक, गदा का नाम कौमोदकी और शंख का नाम पाञ्चजन्य था, जो गुलाबी रंग का था। उनका मुख्य आयुध सुदर्शन चक्र था। ये सभी दिव्यास्त्र भगवान विष्णु के थे, जो बाद में श्रीकृष्ण को मिले।
श्रीकृष्ण को भगवान विष्णु का परमावतार या पूर्णावतार कहते हैं, क्योंकि कृष्ण अवतार ही नारायण के सर्वाधिक निकट माना जाता है। कहा जाता है कि श्रीराम भगवान विष्णु के 12 गुणों के साथ अवतरित हुए इसीलिए उनमें मानवीय गुण अधिक था और उन्हें पुरुषोत्तम कहा गया किंतु श्रीकृष्ण भगवान नारायण के सभी 15 गुणों के साथ जन्मे जिस कारण उन्हें परमावतार कहा गया। यही कारण है कि जहां श्रीराम को सभी दिव्यास्त्र तपस्या अथवा गुरु से प्राप्त करने पड़े वहीं श्रीकृष्ण को वे स्वत: ही मिल गए।
कौमोदकी को विश्व का प्रथम और सबसे शक्तिशाली गदा माना जाता है जिसका निर्माण स्वयं भगवान ब्रह्मा ने नारायण के लिए किया था। भगवान विष्णु से वो गदा श्रीकृष्ण को प्राप्त हुई। महाभारत में कृष्ण के अतिरिक्त कौमोदकी को केवल बलराम और भीम ही उठा सकते थे।
जब श्रीकृष्ण पुत्र साम्ब, दुर्योधन पुत्री लक्ष्मणा से विवाह करने हस्तिनापुर गया तो दुर्योधन ने उसे बंदी बना लिया। श्रीकृष्ण हस्तिनापुर के लिए जाने वाले थे कि बलराम उन्हें द्वारका में ही रोककर स्वयं हस्तिनापुर गए। जब दुर्योधन ने साम्ब को मुक्त करने से इंकार किया तो बलराम ने अपने हल से हस्तिनापुर को गंगा की ओर झुका दिया जिससे हस्तिनापुर गंगा में डूबने के कगार पर पहुंच गया। बाद में भीष्म के बीच-बचाव के बाद दुर्योधन ने साम्ब को मुक्त किया और लक्ष्मणा का विवाह भी उससे कर दिया। वर्तमान के हस्तिनापुर की भूमि अभी भी गंगा के छोर की तरफ झुकी हुई है।
अर्जुन को विश्व का सर्वश्रेष्ठ धनुर्धर माना जाता है किंतु मद्र की राजकुमारी लक्ष्मणा के स्वयंवर में अर्जुन भी लक्षवेध नहीं कर पाए थे। फिर श्रीकृष्ण ने लक्षवेध कर लक्ष्मणा से विवाह किया, जो पहले से ही उन्हें अपना पति मान चुकी थी।
बाणासुर के विरुद्ध तो उन्हें स्वयं भगवान शिव से युद्ध लड़ना पड़ा और भगवान रुद्र के कारण ही बाणासुर के प्राण बच पाए। आज वैज्ञानिक जैविक युद्ध की बात करते हैं, पर युगों पहले उस युद्ध में भगवान शिव के महेश्वरज्वर के विरुद्ध उन्होंने वैष्णवज्वर का प्रयोग कर दिया था, जो संसार का पहला जीवाणु युद्ध था।
महाभारत युद्ध में कर्ण ने श्रीकृष्ण से प्रार्थना की कि मरने के बाद उसका अंतिम संस्कार ऐसी जगह हो, जहां कोई पाप न हो। संसार में ऐसी कोई जगह नहीं थी, जहां पाप न हो। इसीलिए श्रीकृष्ण ने कर्ण का अंतिम संस्कार अपने हाथों पर किया था।
ऋषि और गांधारी के श्राप के कारण अंत समय में उनके पुत्र साम्ब के गर्भ से एक मूसल पैदा हुआ और देखते ही देखते मूसल का ढेर लग गया। वहीं समुद्र किनारे सारे यादव वीर उन्हीं मूसलों से आपस में लड़ने लगे जिससे क्षुब्ध होकर श्रीकृष्ण और बलराम ने वहीं उगी घास को उखाड़कर स्वयं सभी यादवों का संहार कर दिया। इसके बाद पहले बलराम और फिर श्रीकृष्ण ने भी संसार का त्याग कर दिया। महाभारत के मौसल पर्व में इसका विस्तृत वर्णन है।
श्रीकृष्ण के जन्म के समय और उनकी आयु के विषय में पुराणों व आधुनिक मिथक विज्ञानियों में मतभेद हैं। हालांकि महाभारत के समय उनकी आयु 72 वर्ष बताई गई है। महाभारत के पश्चात पांडवों ने 35 वर्ष शासन किया और श्रीकृष्ण की मृत्यु के तुरंत बाद ही उन्होंने भी अपने शरीर का त्याग कर दिया। इस गणना से श्रीकृष्ण की आयु उनकी मृत्यु के समय लगभग 108 वर्ष थी। यह संख्या हिन्दू धर्म में बहुत ही पवित्र मानी जाती है। यही नहीं, परगमन के समय न श्रीकृष्ण का एक भी बाल श्वेत था और न ही शरीर पर कोई झुर्री ही थी।
