महाशिवरात्रि परम कल्याणकारी व्रत है जिसके विधि-पूर्वक करने से व्यक्ति के दुःख, पीड़ाओं का अंत होता है और उसे इच्छित फल पति, पत्नी, पुत्र, धन, सौभाग्य, समृद्धि व आरोग्यता प्राप्त होती है तथा वह जीवन के अंतिम लक्ष्य (मोक्ष) को प्राप्त करने के योग्य बन जाता है।
महाशिवरात्रि का व्रत प्रति वर्ष की भांति इस वर्ष भी फाल्गुन मास के कृष्ण पक्ष चतुदर्शी तिथि को भारत सहित विश्व के कई हिस्सों मे ईश्वर की सत्ता मे विश्वास रखने वाले भक्तों द्वारा बड़े ही धूम-धाम से मनाया जाएगा।
ज्योतिषीय दृष्टि से चतुदर्शी (14) अपने आप में बड़ी ही महत्त्वपूर्ण तिथि है। इस तिथि के देवता भगवान शिव हैं, जिसका योग 1+4=5 हुआ अर्थात् पूर्णा तिथि बनती है। साथ ही कालपुरुष की कुण्डली में पांचवां भाव प्रेम भक्ति का माना गया है। अर्थात् इस व्रत को जो भी प्रेम भक्ति के साथ करता है उसके सभी वांछित कार्य भगवान शिव की कृपा से पूर्ण होते हैं।
इस व्रत को बाल, युवा, वृद्ध, स्त्री व पुरुष, भक्ति व निष्ठा के साथ कर सकते हैं। इस व्रत से संबंधित कई जनश्रुतियां तथा पुराणों में अनेक प्रसंग हैं। जिसमें प्रमुख रूप से शिवलिंग के प्रकट होने तथा शिकारी व मृग परिवार का संवाद है। निर्धनता व क्षुधा से व्याकुल जीव हिंसा को अपने गले लगा चुके उस शिकारी को दैवयोग से महाशिवरात्रि के दिन खाने को कुछ नहीं मिला तथा सायंकालीन वेला मे सरोवर के निकट बिल्वपत्र में चढ़ कर अपने आखेट की लालसा से रात्रि के चार पहर अर्थात् सुबह तक बिल्वपत्र को तोड़कर अनजाने में नीचे गिराता रहा जो शिवलिंग पर चढ़ते गए।
जिसके फलस्वरूप उसका हिंसक हृदय पवित्र हुआ और प्रत्येक पहर में हाथ आए उस मृग परिवार को उनके वायदे के अनुसार छोड़ता रहा। किन्तु किए गए वायदे के अनुसार मृग परिवार उस शिकारी के सामने प्रस्तुत हुआ। परिणामस्वरूप उसे व मृग परिवार को वांछित फल व मोक्ष प्राप्त हुए।
इस दिन व्रती को प्रातःकाल ही नित्यादि स्नानादि क्रियाओं से निवृत होकर भगवान शिव की पूजा, अर्चना विविध प्रकार से करना चाहिए। इस पूजा को किसी एक प्रकार से करना चाहिए। जैसे- पंचोपचार (पांच प्रकार) या फिर षोडशोपचार (16 प्रकार से) या अष्टादशोपचार (18 प्रकार) से करना चाहिए। भगवान शिव से श्रद्धा व विश्वासपूर्वक 'शुद्ध चित्त' से प्रार्थना करनी चाहिए, कि

आपको बारम्बार नमस्कार है। आप मुझे ऐसी कृपा शक्ति दो जिससे मैं दिन के चार और रात्रि के चार पहरों मे आपकी अर्चना कर सकूं और मुझे क्षुधा, पिपासा, लोभ, मोह पीड़ित न करें, मेरी बुद्धि निर्मल हो मैं जीवन को सद्कर्मों, सन्मार्ग में लगाते हुए इस धरा पर चिरस्मृति छोड़ आपकी परम कृपा प्राप्त करूं।
इस व्रत में रात्रि जागरण व पूजन का बड़ा ही महत्त्व है इसलिए सांयकालीन स्नानादि से निवृत्त होकर यदि वैभव साथ देता हो तो वैदिक मंत्रों द्वारा प्रत्येक पहर में वैदिक ब्राह्मण समूह की सहायता से पूर्वा या उत्तराभिमुख होकर रूद्राभिषेक करवाना चाहिए। इसके पश्चात् सुगंधित पुष्प, गंध, चंदन, बिल्वपत्र, धतूरा, धूप-दीप, भांग, नैवेद्य आदि द्वारा रात्रि के चारों पहर में पूजा करनी चाहिए। किन्तु जो आर्थिक रूप से शिथिल हैं उन्हें भी श्रद्धा व विश्वासपूर्वक किसी शिवालय में या फिर अपने ही घर में उपरोक्त सामग्री द्वारा पार्थिव पूजन प्रत्येक पहर में करते हुए 'ॐ नमः शिवाय' का जप करना चाहिए।
यदि अशक्त (किसी कारण या परेशानी) होने पर सम्पूर्ण रात्रि का पूजन न हो सके तो पहले पहर की पूजा अवश्य ही करनी चाहिए। इस प्रकार अंतिम पहर की पूजा के साथ ही समुचित ढंग व बड़े आदर के साथ प्रार्थना करते हुए संपन्न करें। तत्पश्चात् स्नान से निवृत्त होकर व्रत खोलना यानी पारण करना चाहिए।
इस व्रत में त्रयोदशी विद्धा (युक्त) चतुर्दशी तिथि ली जाती है। पुराणों के अनुसार भगवान शिव इस ब्रह्माण्ड के संहारक व तमोगुण से युक्त हैं जो महाप्रलय की बेला में तांडव नृत्य करते हुए अपने तीसरे नेत्र से ब्रह्माण्ड को भस्म कर देते हैं। अर्थात् जो काल के भी महाकाल हैं जहां पर सभी काल (समय) या मृत्यु ठहर जातें हैं, सम्पूर्ण ब्रह्माण्ड की गति वहीं स्थित या समाप्त हो जाती है।

रात्रि की प्रकृति भी तमोगुणी है, जिससे इस पर्व को रात्रि काल में मनाया जाता है। भगवान शंकर का रूप जहाँ प्रलयकाल में संहारक है वहीं भक्तों के लिए बड़ा ही भोला,कल्याणकारी व वरदायक भी है जिससे उन्हें भोलेनाथ, दयालु व कृपालु भी कहा जाता है। अर्थात् महाशिवरात्रि में श्रद्धा और विश्वास के साथ अर्पित किया गया एक भी पत्र या पुष्प पापों को नष्ट कर पुण्य कर्मों को बढ़ा तत्काल भाग्योदय करता है। इसीलिए इसे परम उत्साह, शक्ति व भक्ति का पर्व कहा जाता है।
