शिवरात्रि और महाशिवरात्रि के बीच का फर्क ( Difference between shivratri and mahashivratri):
1. मासिक शिवरात्रि : प्रति माह कृष्ण पक्ष की जो चतुर्दशी होती है उसे मासिक शिवरात्रि कहते हैं। जिस तरह श्रीहरि विष्णु जी के लिए एकादशी का व्रत रखा जाता है उसी तरह शिवजी के लिए प्रदोष या मासिक शिवरात्रि का व्रत रखा जाता है। विष्णुजी का दिन रविवार तो शिवजी का दिन सोमवार है।
2. शिवरात्रि : प्रतिवर्ष श्रावण माह में आने वाली चतुर्दशी को शिवरात्रि मनाई जाती है। यह मासिक शिवरात्रि से बड़ी शिवरात्रि मानी जाती है। श्रावण मास की चतुर्दशी को शिवरात्रि भी धूम-धाम से मनाई जाती है। कहते हैं कि भगवान शिव ने अमृत मंथन के दौरान निकले हलाहल नामक विष को अपने कंठ में रख लिया था। इसी विष की तपन को शांत करने के लिए इस दिन सभी देवताओं ने उनका जल और पंचामृत से अभिषेक किया था। इसीलिए श्रावण माह में शिवजी को जल और दूध अर्पित करने का प्रचलन है।

3. महाशिवरात्रि : प्रतिवर्ष फाल्गुन मास की कृष्ण चतुर्दशी पर पड़ने वाली शिवरात्रि को महाशिवरात्रि कहा जाता है, जिसे बड़े ही हषोर्ल्लास और भक्ति के साथ मनाया जाता है। इस चतुर्दशी को शिवपूजा करने का विशेष महत्व और विधान है। कहते हैं कि फाल्गुन कृष्ण चतुर्दशी की रात्रि में आदिदेव भगवान शिव करोड़ों सूर्यों के समान प्रभाव वाले लिंग रूप में प्रकट हुए थे। कहते हैं कि इसी दिन भगवान शंकर की माता पार्वती के साथ शादी भी हुई थी। इसलिए रात में शंकर की बारात निकाली जाती है। रात में पूजा कर फलाहार किया जाता है। अगले दिन सवेरे जौ, तिल, खीर और बेल पत्र का हवन करके व्रत समाप्त किया जाता है।
