हिंदू इतिहास ग्रंथ पुराणों में त्रैलोक्य का वर्णन मिलता है। ये तीन लोक हैं- 1. कृतक त्रैलोक्य, 2. महर्लोक, 3. अकृतक त्रैलोक्य। इसमें से कृतक त्रैलोक्य में स्थित है पाताल लोक। आओ जानते हैं पाताल लोक के 8 रहस्य।
1. कृतक त्रैलोक्य- कृतक त्रैलोक्य जिसे त्रिभुवन भी कहते हैं। इसके बारे में पुराणों की धारणा है कि यह नश्वर है। इसकी एक निश्चित आयु है। उक्त त्रैलोक्य के भी तीन भेद हैं- भूलोक, भुवर्लोक, स्वर्लोक (स्वर्ग)। इसमें भी भूलोक में है स्थित है पाताल लोक।
2. सात हैं पाताल : धरती पर ही सात पातालों का वर्णन पुराणों में मिलता है। ये सात पाताल है- अतल, वितल, सुतल, तलातल, महातल, रसातल और पाताल। इनमें से प्रत्येक की लंबाई चौड़ाई दस-दस हजार योजन की बताई गई है। ये भूमि के बिल भी एक प्रकार के पाताल ही हैं। पाताल लोक अर्थात रेगिस्तान के भीतर और समुद्र के किनारे के अलावा समुद्र के अंदर के लोक भी पाताल लोक ही हैं। पुराणों अनुसार भू-लोक यानी पृथ्वी के नीचे सात प्रकार के लोक हैं जिनमें पाताल लोक अंतिम है। पाताल लोक को नागलोक का मध्य भाग बताया गया है। पाताल लोकों की संख्या सात बताई गई है।
3. कौन रहता है पाताल लोक में : पाताल लोक में नाग, दैत्य, दानव और यक्ष रहते हैं। यहां वैभवपूर्ण भवन, उद्यान और क्रीड़ा स्थलों में दैत्य, दानव और नाग तरह-तरह की मायामयी क्रीड़ाएं करते हुए निवास करते हैं। वे सब गृहस्थधर्म का पालन करने वाले हैं। उनके स्त्री, पुत्र, बंधु और बांधव सेववकलोक उनसे बड़ा प्रेम रखते हैं और सदा प्रसन्नचित्त रहते हैं। उनके भोगों में बाधा डालने की इंद्रादि में भी सामर्थ्य नहीं है। वहां बुढ़ापा नहीं होता। वे सदा जवान और सुंदर बने रहते हैं। इनमें स्वर्ग से भी अधिक विषयभोग, ऐश्वर्य, आनंद, सन्तान सुख और धन संपत्ति है।
प्राचीनकाल में समुद्र के तटवर्ती इलाकों को भी पाताल लोक कहा जाता था। बंगाल की खाड़ी के आसपास नागलोक होने का जिक्र है। यहां नाग संप्रदाय भी रहता था। इतिहासकार मानते हैं कि वैदिक काल में धरती के तटवर्ती इलाके और खाड़ी देश को पाताल में माना जाता था।
4. अंतिम पाताल : सात प्रकार के पाताल में जो अंतिम पाताल है वहां की भूमियां शुक्ल, कृष्ण, अरुण और पीत वर्ण की तथा शर्करामयी (कंकरीली), शैली (पथरीली) और सुवर्णमयी हैं। वहां दैत्य, दानव, यक्ष और बड़े-बड़े नागों और मत्स्य कन्याओं की जातियां वास करती हैं। वहां अरुणनयन हिमालय के समान एक ही पर्वत है।
5.पाताल लोक में अग्नि : जल के भीतर अग्नि : माना जाता है कि जब देवताओं ने दैत्यों का नाश कर अमृतपान किया था तब उन्होंने अमृत पीकर उसका अवशिष्ट भाग पाताल में ही रख दिया था अत: तभी से वहां जल का आहार करने वाली आसुर अग्नि सदा उद्दीप्त रहती है। वह अग्नि अपने को देवताओं से नियंत्रित रहती है और वह अग्नि अपने स्थान के आस-पास नहीं फैलती। इसी कारण धरती के अंदर अग्नि है अर्थात अमृतमय सोम (जल) की हानि और वृद्धि निरंतर दिखाई पड़ती है। सूर्य की किरणों से मृतप्राय पाताल निवासी चन्द्रमा की अमृतमयी किरणों से पुन: जी उठते हैं।
6.कैसे जा सकते हैं पाताल लोक में : आपने धरती पर ऐसे कई स्थानों को देखा या उनके बारे में सुना होगा जिनके नाम के आगे पाताल लगा हुआ है, जैसे पाताल कोट, पाताल पानी, पाताल द्वार, पाताल भैरवी, पाताल दुर्ग, देवलोक पाताल भुवनेश्वर आदि। नर्मदा नदी को भी पाताल नदी कहा जाता है। नदी के भीतर भी ऐसे कई स्थान होते हैं, जहां से पाताल लोक जाया जा सकता है। कहते हैं कि ऐसी कई गुफाएं हैं, जहां से पाताल लोक जाया जा सकता है। ऐसी गुफाओं का एक सिरा तो दिखता है लेकिन दूसरा कहां खत्म होता है, इसका किसी को पता नहीं। समुद्र में भी ऐसे कई रास्ते हैं, जहां से पाताल लोक पहुंचा जा सकता है। धरती के 75 प्रतिशत भाग पर तो जल ही है। पाताल लोक कोई कल्पना नहीं। पुराणों में इसका विस्तार से वर्णन मिलता है।
7.पाताल लोक की कथाएं : हिन्दू धर्म ग्रंथों में पाताल लोक से संबंधित असंख्य घटनाओं का वर्णन मिलता हैं। कहते हैं कि एक बार माता पार्वती के कान की बाली (मणि) यहां गिर गई थी और पानी में खो गई। खूब खोज-खबर की गई, लेकिन मणि नहीं मिली। बाद में पता चला कि वह मणि पाताल लोक में शेषनाग के पास पहुंच गई है। जब शेषनाग को इसकी जानकारी हुई तो उसने पाताल लोक से ही जोरदार फुफकार मारी और धरती के अंदर से गरम जल फूट पड़ा। गरम जल के साथ ही मणि भी निकल पड़ी।
पुराणों में पाताल लोक के बारे में सबसे लोकप्रिय प्रसंग भगवान विष्णु के अवतार वामन और राजा बलि का माना जाता है। बली ही पाताल लोक के राजा माने जाते थे। रामायण में भी अहिरावण द्वारा राम-लक्ष्मण का हरण कर पाताल लोक ले जाने पर श्री हनुमान के वहां जाकर अहिरावण वध करने का प्रसंग आता है। इसके अलावा भी ब्रह्मांड के तीन लोकों में पाताल लोक का भी धार्मिक महत्व बताया गया है।

8. किस पाताल में कौन रहता है?
1. अतल : अतल में मय दानव का पुत्र असुर बल रहता है। उसने छियानवे प्रकार की माया रची है।
2. वितल : उसके वितल लोक में भगवान हाटकेश्वर नामक महादेवजी अपने पार्षद भूतगणों सहित रहते हैं। वे प्रजापति की सृष्टि वृद्धि के लिए भवानी के साथ विहार करते रहते हैं। उन दोनों के प्रभाव से वहां हाट की नाम की एक सुंदर नदी बहती है।
3. सुतल : वितल के नीचे सुतल लोक है। उसमें महायशश्वी पवित्रकीर्ति विरोचन के पुत्र बलि रहते हैं। वामन रूप में भगवान ने जिनसे तीनों लोक छीन लिए थे।
4. तलातल : सुतल लोक से नीचे तलातल है। वहां त्रिपुराधिपति दानवराज मय रहता है। मयदानव विषयों का परम गुरु है।
5.महातल : उसके नीचे महातल में कश्यप की पत्नी कद्रू से उत्पन्न हुए अनेक सिरों वाले सर्पों का ‘क्रोधवश’ नामक एक समुदाय रहता है। उनमें कहुक, तक्षक, कालिया और सुषेण आदि प्रधान नाग हैं। उनके बड़े-बड़े फन हैं।
6. रसातल : उनके नीचे रसातल में पणि नाम के दैत्य और दानव रहते हैं। ये निवातकवच, कालेय और हिरण्यपुरवासी भी कहलाते हैं। इनका देवताओं से सदा विरोध रहता है।
7. पाताल : रसातल के नीचे पाताल है। वहां शंड्ड, कुलिक, महाशंड्ड, श्वेत, धनंजय, धृतराष्ट्र, शंखचूड़, कम्बल, अक्षतर और देवदत्त आदि बड़े क्रोधी और बड़े-बड़े फनों वाले नाग रहते हैं। इनमें वासुकि प्रधान है। उनमें किसी के 5, किसी के 7, किसी के 10, किसी के 100 और किसी के 1000 सिर हैं। उनके फनों की दमकती हुई मणियां अपने प्रकाश से पाताल लोक का सारा अंधकार नष्ट कर देती हैं।
