सिर ढंकने की परंपरा हिन्दू धर्म की देन है। प्राचीन काल में राजा लोग मुकुट पहननते थे। प्राचीनकाल में सभी के सिर ढंके ही होते थे अर्थात हर प्रांत की अपनी एक वेशभूषा थी जिसमें सिर पर पगड़ी पहनने का रिवाज था। राजस्थान, मालवा व निमाड़ के ग्रामीण क्षेत्रों में आज भी कई लोग सिर पर साफ बांधकर रखते हैं। महिलाएं सिर पर ओढ़नी या पल्लू डालकर ही रहती थीं। ऐसे में वे सभी जब मंदिर जाते थे तो सिर ढंका ही होता था।
1. आदर देने का सूचक : पुरानी मान्यताओं के अनुसार कहा जाता है कि जिसको आप आदर देते हैं, उनके आगे हमेशा सिर ढंककर जाते हैं। इसी कारण से कई महिलाएं अभी भी जब भी अपने सास-ससुर या बड़ों से मिलती हैं, तो सिर ढंक लेती हैं। यही कारण है कि जब हम मंदिर में जाते हैं, तो सिर ढंककर ही जाते हैं।
2. सम्मान का सूचक : सिर ढंककर रखना सम्मानसूचक भी माना जाता है। सिर की पगड़ी को कुछ लोग अपनी इज्जत से जोड़कर देखते हैं। राजाओं के लिए उनके मुकुट सम्मान के सूचक होते थे। ऐसे में कुछ लोग यह मानते हैं कि यदि मंदिर जाएं तो अपना रुतबा व सम्मान सभी प्रभु के चरणों में रख दें। मतलब यह कि सिर खुला रखकर जाएं।
3. मन की एकाग्रता : हिन्दू धर्म के अनुसार सिर के बीचोबीच सहस्रार चक्र होता है जिसे ब्रह्म रन्ध्र भी कहते हैं। हमारे शरीर में 10 द्वार होते हैं- 2 नासिका, 2 आंख, 2 कान, 1 मुंह, 2 गुप्तांग और सिर के मध्य भाग में 10वां द्वार होता है। दशम द्वार के माध्यम से ही परमात्मा से साक्षात्कार कर पा सकते हैं। इसीलिए पूजा के समय या मंदिर में प्रार्थना करने के समय सिर को ढंककर रखने से मन एकाग्र बना रहता है। पूजा के समय पुरुषों द्वारा शिखा बांधने को लेकर भी यही मान्यता है।
4. हेलमेट की तरह : सिर मनुष्य के अंगों में सबसे संवेदनशील स्थान होता है और इस संवेदनशील स्थान को मौसम की मार, कीटाणुओं के हमले, पत्थर आदि लगने, गिरने या लड़ाई-झगड़े में सिर को बचाने के लिए सिर पर पगड़ी, साफा या टोप लगाया जाता था, जैसे कि आजकल गाड़ी चलाने के लिए हेलमेट जरूरी हो गया है।
5. रोग से बचाव : बालों की चुंबकीय शक्ति के कारण सिर के बालों में रोग फैलाने वाले कीटाणु आसानी से चिपक जाते हैं। ये कीटाणु बालों से शरीर के भीतर प्रवेश कर जाते हैं जिससे वे व्यक्ति को रोगी बनाते हैं। यह भी कहते हैं कि आकाशीय विद्युतीय तरंगें खुले सिर वाले व्यक्तियों के भीतर प्रवेश कर क्रोध, सिरदर्द, आंखों में कमजोरी आदि रोगों को जन्म देती हैं।

6. सिर का पहनावा : सिर के पहनावे को कपालिका, शिरस्त्राण, शिरावस्त्र या शिरोवेष कहते हैं। यह कपालिका कई प्रकार की होती है। प्रत्येक प्रांत में यह अलग-अलग किस्म, नाम, रंग और रूप में होती है। राजा-महाराजाओं के तो एक से एक स्टाइल के टोप, पगड़ी या मुकुट हुआ करते थे लेकिन हम सामान्यजनों द्वारा पहने जाने वाले कपालिका के बारे में ही बात करेंगे। यहां ध्यान रखने वाली बात यह है कि टोपी और पगड़ी में फर्क होता है।
7. साफा : यदि हम साफे की बात करें तो मालवा में अलग प्रकार का और राजस्थान में अलग प्रकार का साफा बांधा जाता है। इसे पगड़ी या फेटा भी कहते हैं। महाराष्ट्र, पंजाब, हरियाणा, गुजरात में यह अलग होता है, तो तमिलनाडु में अलग। प्राचीनकाल और मध्यकाल में लगभग सभी भारतीय यह पहनते थे। राजस्थान में भी मारवाड़ी साफा अलग तो सामान्य राजस्थानी साफा अलग होता है। मुगलों ने अफगानी, पठानी और पंजाबी साफे को अपनाया। सिखों ने इन्हीं साफे को जड्डे में बदल दिया, जो कि उन्हें एक अलग ही पहचान देता है।
8. राजस्थानी साफा : राजस्थान में राजपूत समाज में साफों के अलग-अलग रंगों व बांधने की अलग-अलग शैली का इस्तेमाल समय-समय के अनुसार होता है, जैसे युद्ध के समय राजपूत सैनिक केसरिया साफा पहनते थे अत: केसरिया रंग का साफा युद्ध और शौर्य का प्रतीक बना। आम दिनों में राजपूत बुजुर्ग खाकी रंग का गोल साफा सिर पर बांधते थे तो विभिन्न समारोहों में पचरंगा, चुंदड़ी, लहरिया आदि रंग-बिरंगे साफों का उपयोग होता था। सफेद रंग का साफा शोक का पर्याय माना जाता है इसलिए राजपूत समाज में सिर्फ शोकग्रस्त व्यक्ति ही सफेद साफा पहनता है।
9. मांगलिक और धार्मिक कार्यों में साफा : आज भी मांगलिक या धार्मिक कार्यों में साफा पहने जाने का प्रचलन है जिससे कि किसी भी प्रकार के रस्मोरिवाज में एक सम्मान, संस्कृति और आध्यात्मिकता की पहचान होती है। इसके और भी कई महत्व हैं। विवाह में घराती और बाराती पक्ष के सभी लोग यदि साफा पहनते हैं तो विवाह समारोह में चार चांद लग जाते हैं। इससे समारोह में उनकी एक अलग ही पहचान निर्मित होती है।
10. टोपी : टोपी सिर का एक ऐसा पहनावा है, जो कि अधिकतर भारतीय हमेशा पहने रखते हैं। जिस गांधी टोपी को गांधी टोपी कहा जाता है, गांधीजी ने उसे कभी नहीं पहना होगा। दरअसल, यह महाराष्ट्र के गांवों में पहनी जाने वाली टोपी है। इसी तरह हिमाचली टोपी, नेपाली टोपी, तमिल टोपी, मणिपुरी टोपी, पठानी टोपी, हैदराबादी टोपी आदि अनेक प्रकार की टोपियां होती हैं। भारत में कई प्रकार की टोपियां प्रचलित हैं।
