पितरों की मुक्ति हेतु किए जाने वाले कर्म तर्पण, भोज और पिंडदान को उचित रीति से नदी के किनारे किया जाता है। इसके लिए देश में कुछ खास स्थान नियुक्त हैं। देश में श्राद्ध पक्ष के लिए लगभग 55 स्थानों को महत्वपूर्ण माना गया है।
परंतु तर्पण पिंडदान हेतु उज्जैन (मध्यप्रदेश), लोहानगर (राजस्थान), प्रयाग (उत्तर प्रदेश), हरिद्वार (उत्तराखंड), पिण्डारक (गुजरात), नाशिक (महाराष्ट्र), गया (बिहार), ब्रह्मकपाल (उत्तराखंड), मेघंकर (महाराष्ट्र), लक्ष्मण बाण (कर्नाटक), पुष्कर (राजस्थान), काशी (उत्तर प्रदेश) को प्रमुख माना जाता है। आओ जानते हैं ब्रह्मकपाली या ब्रह्मकपाल के बारे में।
ब्रह्मकपाली ( Bramha Kapa ) :
1. कहते हैं कि गया में श्राद्ध करने के उपरांत अंतिम श्राद्ध उत्तरखंड के बदरीकाश्रम क्षेत्र के 'ब्रह्मकपाली' में किया जाता है। गया के बाद सबसे महत्वपूर्ण स्थान है।
2. कहते हैं जिन पितरों को गया में मुक्ति नहीं मिलती या अन्य किसी और स्थान पर मुक्ति नहीं मिलती उनका यहां पर श्राद्ध करने से मुक्ति मिल जाती है। यह स्थान बद्रीनाथ धाम के पास अलकनंदा नदी के तट पर स्थित है।

3. पांडवों ने भी अपने परिजनों की आत्म शांति के लिए यहां पर पिंडदान किया था। श्रीमद् भागवत महापुराण अनुसार युद्ध अपने बंधु-बांधवों की हत्या करने पर पांडवों को गोत्र हत्या का पाप लगा था। गोत्र हत्या के पाप से मुक्ति पाने के लिए स्वर्गारोहिणी यात्रा पर जाते हुए पांडवों ने ब्रह्मकपाल में ही अपने पितरों को तर्पण किया था।
4. पुराणों के अनुसार यह स्थान महान तपस्वियों और पवित्र आत्माओं का है। श्रीमद्भागवत पुराण अनुसार यहां सूक्ष्म रूप में महान आत्माएं निवासरत हैं।
5. ब्रह्म कपाली में किया जाने वाला पिंडदान आखिरी माना जाता है। इसके बाद उक्त पूर्वज के निमित्त किसी भी तरह का पिंडदान या श्राद्ध कर्म नहीं किया जाता है।
6. ऐसा माना जाता है कि भगवान ब्रह्मा, ब्रह्मा कपाल के रूप में निवास करते हैं। किसी काल में ब्रह्मा के पांच सिर थे उसमें से एक सिर कटकर यहीं गिरा था। अलकनंदा नदी के तट पर ब्रह्माजी के सिर के आकार की शिला आज भी विद्यमान है।
7. हर वर्ष पितृपक्ष में भाद्रपद शुक्ल पूर्णिमा से लेकर आश्विन कृष्ण अमावस्या तक पितृपक्ष के दौरान यहां भीड़ रहती है।
8. ब्रह्मकपाल को पितरों की मोक्ष प्राप्ति का सर्वोच्च तीर्थ (महातीर्थ) कहा गया है। पुराणों में उल्लेख है कि ब्रह्मकपाल में पिंडदान करने के बाद फिर कहीं पिंडदान की जरूरत नहीं रह जाती।
9. स्कंद पुराण अनुसार पिंडदान के लिए गया, पुष्कर, हरिद्वार, प्रयागराज व काशी भी श्रेयस्कर हैं, लेकिन भू-वैकुंठ बदरीनाथ धाम स्थित ब्रह्मकपाल में किया गया पिंडदान इन सबसे आठ गुणा ज्यादा फलदायी है।
10. ब्रह्म कपाल पर ही शिव को ब्रह्म हत्या के पाप से मुक्ति मिली थी, क्योंकि उन्होंने ही ब्रह्मा का पांचवां सिर काट दिया था।
पुराणों अनुसार ब्रह्मज्ञान, गयाश्राद्ध, गोशाला में मृत्यु तथा कुरुक्षेत्र में निवास- ये चारों मुक्ति के साधन हैं- गया में श्राद्ध करने से ब्रह्महत्या, सुरापान, स्वर्ण की चोरी, गुरुपत्नीगमन और उक्त संसर्ग-जनित सभी महापातक नष्ट हो जाते हैं।
