हिन्दू मास ( hindu masa ) को समझना थोड़ा कठिन है- मूलत: चंद्रमास को देखकर ही तीज-त्योहार मनाए जाते हैं। सबसे ज्यादा यही प्रचलित है। इसके अलावा नक्षत्रमास, सौरमास और अधिमास भी होते हैं। दरअसल हिन्दू पंचांग नक्षत्र, सूर्य और चंद्र पर आधारित है। तिथियां चंद्र पर तो दिवस सूर्य पर आधारित है। आओ जानते हैं हिन्दू माह के संबंध में खास बातें।
हिन्दू चंद्रमास के 12 माह होते हैं। यह 12 माह नक्षत्रों के नाम पर आधारित है। चंद्रमा की कला की घट-बढ़ वाले दो पक्षों (कृष्ण और शुक्ल) का जो एक मास होता है वही चंद्रमास कहलाता है। यह तिथि की घट-बढ़ के अनुसार 29, 30 व 28 एवं 27 दिनों का भी होता है। इसीलिए हर 3 वर्ष के बाद एक अधिमास होता है।
1. चैत्र : यह माह चित्रा नक्षत्र पर रखा गया है क्योंकि इसकी पूर्णिमा को हमेशा चित्रा या स्वाति नक्षत्र ही आता है। इस माह में मेष राशी का गोचर रहता है। इसमें वसंत ऋतु रहती है।
2. बैसाख : यह माह विशाखा नक्षत्र पर रखा गया है क्योंकि इसकी पूर्णिमा को हमेशा विशाखा या अनुराधा ही आता है। इस माह में वृषभ राशी का गोचर रहता। इसमें वसंत ऋतु के बाद ग्रीष्म ऋतु प्रारंभ हो जाती है।
3. ज्येष्ठ : यह माह ज्येष्ठ नक्षत्र पर रखा गया है क्योंकि इसकी पूर्णिमा को हमेशा ज्येष्ठा या मूल नक्षत्र ही आता है। इस माह में मिथुन राशि का गोचर रहता। इसमें ग्रीष्म ऋतु रहती है।
4. अषाढ़ : यह माह पूर्वाषाढ़ा और उत्तराषाढ़ा नक्षत्र पर रखा गया है क्योंकि इसकी पूर्णिमा को हमेशा पूर्वाषाढ़, उत्तराषाढ़ या सतभिषा नक्षत्र ही आता है। इस माह में कर्क राशी का गोचर रहता। इसमें आधे समय ग्रीष्म ऋतु के बाद वर्षा ऋतु प्रारंभ हो जाती है।
5. श्रावण : यह माह श्रवण नक्षत्र पर रखा गया है क्योंकि इसकी पूर्णिमा को हमेशा श्रवण या धनिष्ठा नक्षत्र ही आता है। इस माह में कन्या राशी का गोचर रहता। इसमें वर्षा ऋतु रहती है।
6. भाद्रपद : यह माह भाद्रपद या उत्तराभाद्रपद पर रखा गया है क्योंकि इसकी पूर्णिमा को हमेशा भाद्रपद या उत्तराभाद्रपद नक्षत्र ही आता है। इस माह में सिंह राशी का गोचर रहता। इसमें वर्षा ऋतु रहती है।
7. अश्विन : यह माह अश्विनी नक्षत्र पर रखा गया है क्योंकि इसकी पूर्णिमा को हमेशा अश्विन, रेवती या भरणी नक्षत्र ही आता है। इस माह में तुला राशी का गोचर रहता। इसमें वर्षा शरद रहती है।
8. कार्तिक : यह माह कृतिका नक्षत्र पर रखा गया है क्योंकि इसकी पूर्णिमा को हमेशा कृतिका या रोहणी नक्षत्र ही आता है। इस माह में वृश्चिक राशी का गोचर रहता। इसमें शरद ऋतु रहती है।

9. मार्गशीर्ष : यह माह मृगशिरा नक्षत्र पर रखा गया है क्योंकि इसकी पूर्णिमा को हमेशा मृगशिरा या उत्तरा नक्षत्र ही आता है। इस माह में धनु राशि का गोचर रहता। इसमें हेमंत ऋतु रहती है।
10. पौष : यह माह पुष्य नक्षत्र पर रखा गया है क्योंकि इसकी पूर्णिमा को हमेशा पुनर्वसु या पुष्य नक्षत्र ही आता है। इस माह में मकर राशि का गोचर रहता। इसमें हेमंत ऋतु रहती है।
11. माघ : यह माह मघा नक्षत्र पर रखा गया है क्योंकि इसकी पूर्णिमा को हमेशा मघा या अश्लेशा नक्षत्र ही आता है। इस माह में कुंभ राशि का गोचर रहता। इसमें शिशिर ऋतु रहती है।
12. फाल्गुन : यह माह पूर्वाफाल्गुनी या उत्तराफाल्गुनी नक्षत्र पर रखा गया है क्योंकि इसकी पूर्णिमा को हमेशा र्वाफाल्गुन, उत्तराफाल्गुन या हस्त नक्षत्र ही आता है। इस माह में मीन राशि का गोचर रहता। इसमें शिशिर ऋतु रहती है।
पुरषोत्तम माह : माह को अधिमास भी कहते हैं। इस माह के सभी कुछ भगवान विष्णु ही है।
सौरमास के नाम : मेष, वृषभ, मिथुन, कर्क, सिंह, कन्या, तुला, वृश्चिक, धनु, कुंभ, मकर, मीन।
नक्षत्र मास : चंद्रमा अश्विनी से लेकर रेवती तक के नक्षत्र में विचरण करता है वह काल नक्षत्रमास कहलाता है। यह लगभग 27 दिनों का होता है इसीलिए 27 दिनों का एक नक्षत्रमास कहलाता है।
