धार्मिक शास्त्रों के अनुसार पोंगल (Pongal) एक कृषि और खेती से जुड़ा पर्व-उत्सव है। इस पर्व को मनाने का सबसे बड़ा कारण यह है कि दक्षिण भारत के लोग धान की फसल कांटने के बाद अपनी खुशियों को प्रकट करने के लिए पोंगल का यह त्योहार बड़े ही हर्षोल्लासपूर्वक मनाते हैं। इतना ही नहीं अपनी आगामी फसल भी अच्छे होने की कामना से ईश्वर से प्रार्थना करते हैं। तमिल भाषा में पोंगल का अर्थ उफान या विप्लव होता है।
पोंगल (Hindu Festival Pongal) के दिन लोग सूर्यदेव, इंद्रदेव वर्षा, धूप, वर्षा तथा खेत के काम आने वाले मवेशियों की पूजा, आराधना करके आभार व्यक्त करने के लिए ही खास तौर पर पोंगल का त्योहार मनाते हैं, मान्यतानुसार सूर्यदेव की कृपा से ही अन्न-जल जमीन से प्राप्त होता है और इसी के प्रति कृतज्ञता प्रकट करने के लिए यह त्योहार बड़े ही धूमधाम से मनाया जाता है।
चार दिनों तक मनाए जाने वाले पोंगल के पर्व को अलग-अलग नामों से जाना जाता है। जैसे- पहले दिन भोगी पोंगल (Bhogi Pongal), दूसरे दिन सूर्य पोंगल (Surya Pongal), तीसरे दिन मट्टू पोंगल (Matth Pongal) और चौथे दिन कन्या पोंगल (Kanya Pongal) कहते हैं। इस पर्व का पूजन दिनों के हिसाब से किया जाता है।
इस वर्ष पोंगल 14 से 17 जनवरी तक मनाया जाएगा, लेकिन पोंगल का मुख्य दिन 14 जनवरी को रहेगा। पोंगल पर्व के उत्सव स्वरूप लोग नए कपडे़ पहनते हैं, रिश्तेदारों-पड़ोसियों के यहां मिठाई और पोंगल बना कर भेजते हैं।

1. पोंगल (Pongal) तमिलनाडु का प्रमुख पर्व है अत: इसे पारंपरिक रूप से चार दिनों तक मनाया जाता है।
2. पोंगल पर्व तमिलानाडु के अलावा अमेरिका, कनाडा, सिंगापुर, मलेशिया, श्रीलंका, मॉरिशस आदि में भी मनाया जाता है।
3. इस दिन खेत में उगी फसल का विशेष भोग सूर्यदेव (Suryadev) को लगाया जाता है, जिसे पोंगल (Pongal) कहा जाता है।
4. मकर संक्रांति पर नई फसल के आगमन की खुशी में मनाए जाने वाले इस पर्व का अर्थ है खिचड़ी।
5. इस दिन नए मटके में नए चावल, नया गुड़ तथा ताजे दूध से मीठी खिचड़ी (Mithi Khichadi) बनाई जाती है।
6. इस दिन प्रातः पांच बजे घर की पुरानी चीजों को घर के बाहर करके जलाया जाता है। तत्पश्चात इंद्रदेव का पूजन करते हैं, जिसे मोगी पंडी (Monga Pandi) कहते हैं।
7. पोंगल तमिलनाडु (Tamilnadu) का प्रमुख पर्व है। तमिल परिवार इस त्योहार को हर्षोउल्लास से मनाते हैं। पोंगल पर्व 14 जनवरी से प्रारंभ होगा। यह फसल की कटाई का उत्सव होता है। पोंगल के दिनों में घर के मुख्य द्वार पर रंगोली (Rangoli) बनाई जाती है।
8. 15 जनवरी को पेरूम पोंगल मनाया जाता है। नए धान की मीठी खिचड़ी इस दिन का मुख्य व्यंजन है।
9. 16 जनवरी को भट्ट पोंगल मनाया जाता है। इस दिन गौ माता (Gau Pujan) पूजन किया जाता है।
10. 17 जनवरी को तमिल परिवार एक-दूसरे के घर त्योहार (Happy Pongal) की बधाई देने जाते हैं। दूध उबाला क्या ऐसा पूछ कर शुभकामनाएं देते हैं।
इस तरह पोंगल तमिल हिन्दुओं का एक प्रमुख त्योहार है, जो संपन्नता और फसल को समर्पित त्योहार है।
