विश्वकर्मा एक महान ऋषि और ब्रह्मज्ञानी थे। ऋग्वेद में उनका उल्लेख मिलता है। कहते हैं कि उन्होंने ही देवताओं के घर, नगर, अस्त्र-शस्त्र आदि का निर्माण किया था। वे महान शिल्पकार थे। आओ जानते हैं उनके संबंध में 10 रोचक बातें। 25 फरवरी 2021 यानी माघ शुक्ल त्रयोदशी तिथि को भगवान विश्वकर्माजी की जयंती है।
1.प्राचीन काल में जनकल्याणार्थ मनुष्य को सभ्य बनाने वाले संसार में अनेक जीवनोपयोगी वस्तुओं जैसे वायुयान, जलयान, कुआं, बावड़ी कृषि यन्त्र अस्त्र-शस्त्र, भवन, आभूषण, मूर्तियां, भोजन के पात्र, रथ आदि का अविष्कार करने वाले महर्षि विश्वकर्मा जगत के सर्व प्रथम शिल्पाचार्य होकर आचार्यों के आचार्य कहलाए।
2. प्राचीन समय में 1.इंद्रपुरी, 2.लंकापुरी, 3.यमपुरी, 4.वरुणपुरी, 5.कुबेरपुरी, 6.पाण्डवपुरी, 7.सुदामापुरी, 8.द्वारिका, 9.शिवमण्डलपुरी, 10.हस्तिनापुर जैसे नगरों का निर्माण विश्वकर्मा ने ही किया था। कहते हैं कि उन्होंने ही कर्ण का कुंडल, विष्णु का सुदर्शन चक्र, पुष्पक विमान, शंकर भगवान का त्रिशुल, यमराज का कालदंड आदि वस्तुओं का निर्माण किया था। उन्होंने ही ऋषि दधिचि की हड्डियों से दिव्यास्त्रों का निर्माण किया था।
3. भगवान विश्वकर्मा के अनेक रूपों का उल्लेख पुराणों में मिलता हैं- दो बाहु वाले, चार बाहु और दस बाहु वाले विश्वकर्मा। इसके अलावा एक मुख, चार मुख एवं पंचमुख वाले विश्वकर्मा।
4. पुराणों में विश्वकर्मा के पांच अवतारों का वर्णन मिलता है- 1.विराट विश्वकर्मा- सृष्टि के रचयिता, 2.धर्मवंशी विश्वकर्मा- महान् शिल्प विज्ञान विधाता और प्रभात पुत्र, 3.अंगिरावंशी विश्वकर्मा- आदि विज्ञान विधाता वसु पुत्र, 4.सुधन्वा विश्वकर्म- महान् शिल्पाचार्य विज्ञान जन्मदाता अथवी ऋषि के पौत्र और 5.भृंगुवंशी विश्वकर्मा- उत्कृष्ट शिल्प विज्ञानाचार्य (शुक्राचार्य के पौत्र)।
5. ब्रह्मा के पुत्र धर्म तथा धर्म के पुत्र वास्तुदेव हुए। धर्म की वस्तु नामक पत्नी से उत्पन्न वास्तु सातवें पुत्र थे, जो शिल्पशास्त्र के आदि प्रवर्तक थे। उन्हीं वास्तुदेव की अंगिरसी नामक पत्नी से विश्वकर्मा उत्पन्न हुए थे। स्कंद पुराण के अनुसार धर्म ऋषि के आठवें पुत्र प्रभास का विवाह देव गुरु बृहस्पति की बहन भुवना ब्रह्मवादिनी से हुआ। भगवान विश्वकर्मा का जन्म इन्हीं की कोख से हुआ। महाभारत आदिपर्व अध्याय 16 श्लोक 27 एवं 28 में भी इसका स्पष्ट उल्लेख मिलता है। वराह पुराण के अ.56 में उल्लेख मिलता है कि सब लोगों के उपकारार्थ ब्रह्मा परमेश्वर ने बुद्धि से विचारकर विश्वकर्मा को पृथ्वी पर उत्पन्न किया।
6. विश्वकर्मा के पुत्रों से उत्पन्न हुआ महान कुल ब्रह्मणों का वर्ग है। राजा प्रियव्रत ने विश्वकर्मा की पुत्री बहिर्ष्मती से विवाह किया था जिनसे आग्नीध्र, यज्ञबाहु, मेधातिथि आदि 10 पुत्र उत्पन्न हुए। प्रियव्रत की दूसरी पत्नी से उत्तम, तामस और रैवत ये 3 पुत्र उत्पन्न हुए, जो अपने नाम वाले मन्वंतरों के अधिपति हुए। महाराज प्रियव्रत के 10 पुत्रों में से कवि, महावीर तथा सवन ये 3 नैष्ठिक ब्रह्मचारी थे और उन्होंने संन्यास धर्म ग्रहण किया था।
7. विश्वकर्मा के पांच महान पुत्र: विश्वकर्मा के उनके मनु, मय, त्वष्टा, शिल्पी एवं दैवज्ञ नामक पांच पुत्र थे। ये पांचों वास्तु शिल्प की अलग-अलग विधाओं में पारंगत थे। मनु को लोहे में, मय को लकड़ी में, त्वष्टा को कांसे एवं तांबे में, शिल्पी को ईंट और दैवज्ञ को सोने-चांदी में महारात हासिल थी।
8. विश्वकर्मा की जयंती कन्या संक्रांति (17 सितंबर के आसपास) के दिन आती है जबकि विश्वकर्मा समाज के मतानुसार माघ शुक्ल पक्ष की त्रयोदशी को उनकी जयंती आती है।

9. वायु पुराण अध्याय 4 के पढ़ने से यह बात सिद्ध हो जाती है कि वास्तव में विश्वकर्मा संतान भृगु ऋषि कुल उत्पन्न हैं।

10. भारत में विश्वकर्मा समाज के लोगों को जांगिड़ ब्राह्मण का माना जाता है। सानग, सनातन, अहमन, प्रत्न और सुपर्ण नामक पांच गोत्र प्रवर्तक ऋषियों से प्रत्येक के 25-25 सन्तानें उत्पन्न हुईं जिससे विशाल विश्वकर्मा समाज का विस्तार हुआ है।
