माघ शुक्ल द्वादशी तिथि को कालांतर से भीष्म पितामह की उपासना की जाती रही है। हिन्दी पंचांग के अनुसार प्रतिवर्ष माघ के महीने में शुक्ल पक्ष की अष्टमी को भीष्माष्टमी तथा इसके 4 दिन के बाद भीष्म द्वादशी पर्व (Bhishma Dwadashi) मनाया जाता है।
पुराणों के अनुसार महाभारत युद्ध में अर्जुन ने भीष्म पितामह को बाणों की शैय्या पर लेटा दिया था, उस समय सूर्य दक्षिणायन था। तब भीष्म पितामह (bhishma Pithmah) ने सूर्य के उत्तरायण होने का इंतजार करते हुए माघ मास के शुक्ल पक्ष की अष्टमी के दिन प्राण त्याग दिए थे। अत: इसके 3 दिन बाद ही द्वादशी तिथि पर भीष्म पितामह के लिए तर्पण करने और पूजन की परंपरा चली आ रही है। द्वादशी के दिन पिंड दान, पितृ तर्पण, तर्पण, ब्राह्मण भोज तथा दान-पुण्य करना उत्तम फलदायी माना गया है।
वर्ष 2022 में भीष्म द्वादशी पर्व रविवार, 13 फरवरी (Bhishma Dwadashi 2022) को मनाया जा रहा है।
महत्व- पुराणों के अनुसार भीष्म द्वादशी व्रत करने से जहां मनुष्य की समस्त मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण होती हैं, वहीं पूर्ण श्रद्धा एवं विश्वास के साथ यह व्रत रखने से समस्त कार्यों को सिद्ध करने वाला माना गया है। इस व्रत की पूजा एकादशी के उपवास के समान ही की जाती है। भीष्म द्वादशी के दिन नित्य कर्मों से निवृत्त होकर भगवान लक्ष्मीनारायण की पूजा की जाती है तथा भीष्म द्वादशी कथा पढ़ी या सुनी जाती है। इस दिन पूर्वजों का तर्पण करने का विधान है।
मान्यतानुसार माघ शुक्ल द्वादशी तिथि को भीष्म पितामह की पूजा करने से पितृ देव प्रसन्न होते हैं तथा सुख-सौभाग्य, शांति और समृद्धि प्रदान करते हैं। यह व्रत रोगनाशक माना जाता है। इसे गोविंद द्वादशी (Govind Dwadashi) तथा तिल बारस (Till Dwadashi) के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।
भीष्म द्वादशी के दिन नहाने के जल में तिल मिलाकर स्नान करने का महत्व है। इस दिन श्रीहरि विष्णु, भीष्म पितामह तथा पितृ देवता की विधि-विधान के साथ पूजा तथा तिल से हवन तथा तिल का दान करना चाहिए। प्रसाद में तिल और तिल से व्यंजन, लड्डू आदि अर्पित करना चाहिए।
