‘दुनिया के ज्यादातर कलाकार फ्रांस से ही आते थे, किसी ने सोचा नहीं था कि ऑस्ट्रेलिया से भी एक कलाकार आएगा और वो पूरी दुनिया में अपना नाम करेगा। गुस्ताव क्लिम्ट वही नाम था। जिन्होंने न सिर्फ ऑर्ट के ट्रेडिशनल तरीके को तोड़ा बल्कि अपनी पेंटिंग में ‘एरोटिक टच’ के लिए भी याद किया जाता है। 19वीं शताब्दी के इस ऑस्ट्रियाई चित्रकार गुस्ताव क्लिम्ट की सबसे पॉपुलर पेंटिंग ‘द किस’ है’
14 जुलाई को उनके जन्मदिन के मौके पर जानते हैं इस बड़े आर्टिस्ट के बारे में कुछ खास-खास बातें। गुस्ताव ने ताउम्र शादी नहीं की थी, लेकिन उनकी कई प्रेमिकाएं थीं, कहा जाता है कि उनके प्रेम संबंधों से उनके 14 बच्चे हुए थे।
गोल्डलीफ यानी सोने पर काम करने के लिए पहचाने जाने वाले ऑस्ट्रियाई चित्रकार आर्ट की दुनिया में एक बड़ा नाम है। उस दौर में गुस्ताव अपने फिगरेटिव और न्यूड मॉडल के लिए भी सबसे ज्यादा पॉपुलर थे। 19वीं सदी से लेकर अब तक ज्यादातर कलाकार फ्रांस या इसके आसपास से ही आते थे, जिनका नाम होता था, ऐसे में किसी ने सोचा नहीं था कि किसी ऑस्ट्रियाई कलाकार का भी नाम दुनिया में इतना बड़ा हो सकता है।
गुस्ताव क्लिम्ट अपने काम में सबसे ज्यादा सजावट के लिए जाने जाते हैं। अपने काम में एरोटिक टच देने के कारण वे सबसे ज्यादा चर्चा में रहे। इसके साथ ही उस दौर में उनके काम को ट्रेडिशनल आर्ट के खिलाफ एक विद्रोह के तौर पर देखा गया। उनकी सबसे प्रसिद्ध पेंटिंग एडेल बलोच-बाउर की ‘द किस’ हैं।

गुस्ताव क्लिम्ट का जन्म 14 जुलाई 1862 को आस्ट्रिया के बाहरी इलाके वियना में हुआ था। पिता अर्नस्ट ने अपने जीनव में बेहद संघर्ष किया। वे बोहेमिया से वियना में आकर बसे थे और सोने पर डिजाइन उकेरने का काम किया करते थे। मां अन्ना म्यूजिशियन थीं, लेकिन संगीत के अपने इस ख्वाब को कभी पेशेवर म्यूजिशियन की हकीकत में तब्दील नहीं कर सकीं।
गुस्ताव बचपन से ही एक काबिल कलाकार थे। सिर्फ 14 साल की उम्र में ही वह वियना के स्कूल ऑफ आर्ट्स एंड क्राफ्ट्स में दाखिल हो गए। हालांकि उस वक्त वो गरीबी में पल-बढ़ रहे थे। वियना में रहते हुए क्लिम्ट ने आर्ट की बारहखडी से लेकर उसके क्लासिकल तौर- तरीकों को भी खूब सीखा। उन्होंने वहां खुद को आर्किट्रेक्चरल आर्ट को समझने और सीखने में अपनी पूरी ताकत लगा दी।
शुरुआत में वो सिर्फ एक ड्राइंग टीचर बनना चाहते थे। लेकिन अपनी अलग शैली के चलते क्लिम्ट जल्द ही एक कलाकार के रूप में बदल गए। 1883 में ग्रेजुएशन करने के बाद उन्होंने अपने छोटे भाई अर्नेस्ट और अपने दोस्त फ्रांज मास्च के साथ एक स्टूडियो खोला। खुद को आर्टिस्ट के तौर पर दुनिया के सामने रखने के साथ ही इन तीनों ने म्युरल पर भी काम किया। उस वक्त के अभिजात्य वर्ग को पंसद आने वाले आर्ट पर भी तीनों में जमकर काम किया। इससे उन्हें काफी पॉपुलैरिटी मिली। उन्होंने भित्ती चित्रों पर भी काफी काम किया और उस दौर के कई सम्मान हासिल किए।
1891 में गुस्ताव के भाई अर्नस्ट ने हेलेन फ्लॉज नाम की एक महिला से शादी की थी, इसी साल गुस्ताव ने पहली बार अपनी बहन एमिली की एक पेंटिंग भी बनाई थी। यह काफी प्रभावित करने वाली पेंटिंग थी, लेकिन अगले ही कुछ दिनों में गुस्ताव के भाई और पिता की मौत ने उन्हें बिल्कुल बदल दिया। इस व्यक्तिगत त्रासदी ने उनके काम पर भी बहुत प्रभाव डाला। लेकिन कुछ वक्त के बाद वे फिर से ट्रेक पर लौटे और अपने काम को उन्होंने बखूबी अंजाम दिया। एक बार उन्होंने अपने आर्ट के बारे में कहा था,
“मैंने कभी सेल्फ पोरट्रेट नहीं बनाया, मैं अपने खुद में बहुत कम दिलचस्पी रखता हू, इसके बजाए मैं दूसरे लोगों में और महिलाओं को भी अपनी पेंटिंग के ऑब्जेक्ट के तौर पर ज्यादा देखता हूं”
इस बयान का असर भी उनके काम में नजर आता है। उन्होंने कई महिलाओं के पूरे न्यूड स्कैच और पेंटिंग बनाई। गुस्ताव ने शादी नहीं की थी, हालांकि आजीवन कुआरें रहे गुस्ताव के कई अफेयर्स रहे। कहा जाता है कि उनके अनगिनत महिलाओं और न्यूड मॉडल से संबंध रहे। अपने संबंधों से उनके करीब 14 बच्चे हुए। हालांकि एमिली फ्लॉग के साथ वे ज्यादा समय रहे, उनके साथ उनका स्थाई संबंध माना जाता था। जनवरी 1918 में गुस्ताव क्लिम्ट को दिल का दौरा पड़ा। जिसमें उन्हें लकवा मार गया। बाद में उन्हें अस्पताल में भर्ती कराया गया था, जहां निमोनिया होने के कारण 6 फरवरी 1918 में उनकी मौत हो गई। उन्हें वियना में हेटजिंग कब्रिस्तान में दफनाया गया।
